So for one of this weeks assignments, we had to remix a photo from a designated list and make a story for it.  I had a good time doing it and did all my work in Gimp.  I originally made a different photo, which I decided wasn’t remixed enough for the assignment.

coryremix

honestly, I didn’t change much in the photo.  I made the picture in the background a picture of my foot instead of a little girl, which was funny, but you can’t really tell after I made the guy on an acid trip with all the colors…  I actually tried to make it like one of those scratch off images that has the rainbow in the background with the black over top, but I couldn’t figure it out.  So then I changed my thing and made something else.

coryremix2

So what I did was put him on the Iron Throne.  Origninally, I was going to make him replace Mace Windu on the Jedi Council chair, but I couldn’t find a good picture to put him on there.  Then Game of Thrones was on TV, and the rest was legendary.

Cory outsmarted the Lannisters and invaded the Golden City through the tunnels that Tyrion used to defend them.  After the city was taken over, Cory sat on the Iron Throne to lay his claim to the kingdom.  Now all he has to do is defend himself from the dragons.

I got the picture of the Iron Throne off of google and the other image from the website mentioned earlier.  I also tried to change the color of Cory to something that matched more, but I couldn’t figure the scheme out so I ended up getting rid of it :(

Give Me the Green Light**

To finish my 6 stars of mashup assignments, I completed the assignment, What Color is Your World? The point was to choose a colour to photograph throughout the day.

I chose green, because it’s literally EVERYWHERE I turn. Instead of photographing it, I took short videos of the things that were green. I didn’t realize before how much green stuff I have in my house!

Once I had all my videos, I opened them in MPEG Streamclip to convert them from mp4 to avi and opened them in Window Movie Maker.  I muted all of my short clips and fond the song Green Light by John Legend to play in the background.

6/6 stars.

What is Reality?****

To complete the 6 stars worth of mashup assignments from the ds106 assignment bank, I started with an assignment called Movie Trailer Mashup, worth 4 stars.  I saw someone do this when my ds106 adventure first started, so I’m glad I came across it again! There were a lot of possibilities I wanted to do, such as Avatar/Pocahontas and Curious George/King Kong, but the audio and video from each one just didn’t go well with the other. I decided to do Inception and the Matrix, since they sort of revolve around the same sort of idea–a dream world.

I found a Matrix Trailer on YouTube and an Inception Trailer, and downloaded them via KeepVid. I then opened MPEG Streamclip to convert the videos from mp4 to avi and opened them in Windows Movie Maker.  Finally, I muted the audio of the Matrix trailer and only snagged the audio from the Inception trailer, and put the two together!

4/6 stars.

After I was done, I decided to google the other possibilities I was originally thinking to see what someone else did. I found the following trailer mashups:

Avatar/Pocahontas

King Kong/Curious George

A Capella With Yourself Tutorial

Here’s a bit of a Garageband tutorial for the “A Capella With Yourself” audio assignment (if you’re still interested in audio that is!)

Step 1: Write a song, OR pick a song that you like.
Tip: When you’re picking your song, make sure it’s within your vocal range so you dont sound like a shrieking cat or a deep throated whale.

Step 2. Listen to the song over and over again
Each time you listen to the song, you should be listening for the beat, the lead singer, the background singer(s), and if possible, the music key. This can be very tricky if you don’t have a musical ear….but here’s a page that could possibly help you called Song Key Finder which tells you what key the song is in and what scale it is (you might find your song on this site under “Popular Songs”.) Once you have the song key, you can sing ANY note within that scale in your a capella and it would sound good.

Step 3. Open Garageband and Create Tracks

When you open Garageband, create 3 tracks (or however many “people” you’re singing with) by going to Track–>New Track. What this does is give you the chance to overlay each voice’s part.

Step 4. Start Recording in Parts

On one of the tracks, click the red circle button at the bottom of the screen to start recording. The first track should be the lead singer’s part, singing the main theme of the song (this is the part of the song you’re used to and probably sing in the shower.) When you’re done, press the spacebar to stop recording. It should now look like this:

The next track should either be the backup vocals or the beat. In the image, I started with the backup vocals since I wanted to get all of the vocals out of the way. I dont really know how to explain singing a backup chorus other than taking a guess with the notes and hoping they sound good. After a few recordings, they’ll eventually sound nice. (or that’s just my luck.)

Background Vocal photo Picture7_zps43421baf.png

Lastly you should make the beat of the song. This can be done by snapping, clapping, or beatboxing (making “tss-tss-tss-tss” sounds). The point is to sound like some sort of percussion instrument to keep the song on track. If you cant find the beat of the song, try counting 1-2-3-4 OR 1-2-3 and see which one fits. (Most songs are in 4/4 so its 1-2-3-4)

Beats photo Picture8_zpsb3fe83d3.png

Step 4.5: Put some attitude and emotion into it!
No one likes a flat sounding song! Add some color to it to keep it interesting!

Step 5: Make Sure all the Sounds Align

Now that the hard part is over, all you have to do is make sure all of the beats and vocals line up to form the song. You can move each recording to fix it up if something sounds off.

Step 6 (optional): Add Effects

How would you like your singing group to be on stage in a concert hall? To make this sound effect, look to the right side of the screen and look under vocals to find the “Epic Diva” effect. This effect produces an echo and something called a reverb (not the repitition of an echo, but an open sound.)

Effect photo Picture9_zpsb85352d6.png

After clicking this for each track, under the Epic Diva options turn off the Chorus and Track echo buttons by clicking the blue light. Also go to the bottom and turn the scroller on the Master Reverb to about 44%. This is the concert hall effect.

Step 7: Save it

To save the project, head up to the Garageband toolbar and select Share–>Export Song to Disk. This turns your glorious song into an mp3 able to be shared with everyone.

Aaaand you’re DONE!! Listen to yourself, yourself, and yourself now! You all are ready to have your own world tours!

Locked Up

I can honestly say that I have put off this last assignment like no other! I don’t know why…maybe because this is my LAST WEEK of classes as an undergrad!!!! That could have been it…

The For The Remix assignment had DS students use pictures that Jonathan Worth’s website of author Cory Doctorow to promote his books. This was a contest so it would be judged. Not only was this for a grade, it was also judged by the person who took the pictures. Maybe that’s another reason why I put off this assignment to the last thing I did for remix week.

I looked on Cory’s website at some of his books and thought that Pirate Cinema seemed really interesting. We are running into copyright and download errors so I thought it would be interesting if I used the theme of this book in my remixed picture of Cory. In this book, the main character gets banned from the internet for a whole year! I can’t imagine not having the internet for a year. I mean not only would I not have homework {which I could get used to} but I wouldn’t be able to go on social media sites, check email, watch videos, or Netflix! Oh man…it would be like being in prison. And that’s where my inspiration came from.

I used the good ole’ GIMP to open up this picture and started to get remixing! I found a picture of a jail cell on Google and wanted to layer that onto the picture of Cory. I started by using the free select tool to remove the background on the picture of Cory. I got rid of the books and bookshelves and was going to replace it with a transparent jail cell background. I wanted to make it look like Cory was sitting in his chair in a jail cell. This would symbolize his book Pirate Cinema.

This idea did not just come to me. I spent some time thinking and was going to just do it another day but I told myself I wouldn’t put it off anymore. Even if the sun outside was tempting. Ok, I might have taken a break and sat outside. But I was still thinking about this assignment and what I was going to do!!

Because of the Creative Commons License, I could take this picture and remix it. I was very happy to see that someone acknowledged the fact that using someone’s work and changing it to make your own work is NOT a copyright violation.

Song blog post title: Locked Up – Akon

Everyday Green

To complete my 6 stars of mashup assignments this week, I decided to do the 2 star assignment “What Color is your world?

In this assignment you had to take pictures of one specific color throughout your day. In addition, you needed to find a song with the word of the color you picked in it. There was already an example of blue and pink. Since those were my go to colors in everyday life, I decided I needed to go with something different. So I chose  the color green.

I snapped all the pictures using my iPhone and uploaded them into I movie. I then went to google and searched for a song with the world “Green” in it. There are actually a lot of songs, but I really couldn’t find a song that I loved. Then I found “Green Light” by John Legend. I really like the beat and his voice so I just went with it. The pictures you will see in this quick movie are:

  • Green Lanterns- I see these when I wake up in the morning
  • Green pen, bedspread, and wrapper- From work and breakfast this morning
  • Green Tree and Grass- Yay for spring time!
  • Green Bow- On my gear shifter thing in the car
  • Green Smoothie-I had a meeting off campus so I decided on a smoothie for lunch!
  • Green Wegman bag- After my meeting I had to do a little grocery shopping and picked up dinner.
  • Green beans- Yummy Dinner
  • Green Tea- Delicious end to the night

Here’s my work in iMovie:

Everyday Green ScreenShot

And here is my short movie, enjoy!

Reduce, Reuse, RECYCLE

A few weeks ago, we had to give up our recycled media to be added to a large class file found here and this week, we had to complete the assignment, Recycle the Media.  Using the old media, I created a video by using six photos and  five audio clips, to make a short story! I used Windows Media Maker to upload the audio files and photos, to which I added text to bring the story together.

This was a lot more fun than I thought it would be, but it was also challenging to find media to support my story.  I had to be flexible and allow for changes in my story, otherwise it wouldn’t have worked.
