Chaplin Foley Remix!

This week, we were tasked with remixing some of the previous work of ourselves and other students from the Chaplin Foley assignment from weeks 6-7 and using them to remake the Charlie Chaplin clip for the Charlie Chaplin Foley Artist assignment.

I chose to remake the clip using a mix of sounds from my classmates, trying to keep them all mostly based upon sound effects and not including any spoken words, hoping to make the clip a comedic adventure.

To make the clip, I downloaded the sounds that I wanted to use from SoundCloud, the music from Incompetech and used KeepVid to download the film clip. I imported them all into iMovie and put the sounds in order, setting the music track’s volume to 16% in order to be able to hear the sound effects over the music. I made the credits, wanting to give them a circus feel and published the clip to YouTube.

I used the following clips and music in my video:

For music I chose to use Call to Adventure by Kevin MacLeod, which I felt gave the piece the comedic feel I was hoping for.

The only issue I had with the assignment came when dealing with Clip 2. One of the clips was only 16 seconds long, so I could not use it. I had to use the 29 second clip which was unfortunately staticky and takes away some from the rest of the clip. The only way that I thought that I could fix this was by recording my own clip, but that was not part of the assignment.

Island of Misfit Toys

One assignment we had to do this week was the Recycle the Media. This assignment did not count towards our six stars of mashup/remix that we need for these two weeks.

A couple of weeks ago, each DSer had to submit three pieces of media that they had but never used for assignments. The task at hand was the take five pieces of the media on this site and mash them up so they tell a story.

When I first got to the site, I was surprised at how many pieces we had that were never used! And they were good…I wonder why these pieces got the boot? It’s like the island of misfit toys. How sad.

I looked through the collection for some pieces of media that atleast looked like they went together. I thought that if they were similar enough, I would be able to turn them into a coherent story.

And I edited them with Windows Movie Maker. It was a very simple process. I downloaded all of the media pictures and an audio file that I wanted to my computer. I imported them in Windows Movie Maker. I added a title page and credits and viola! Here is my finished product:

The story arc goes a little something like this: a young girl attended UMW. She thought she could never graduate but eventually…she did! That night after graduation, she was going out with all of her friends to celebrate. She had a lot of choices to make but for the first time, they weren’t academic choices…they were shoe choices.

This assignment was fun to do. I’m still shocked at the number of “misfit” media pieces on the islanDS. {<see what I did there? ;)}

Recycled Media Mashup

Reduce, Reuse, RECYCLE!

I’ve taken 5 pieces of unused media from the Ds106 junked media bucket and created this…I don’t know what it is, but it seems like an awesome party to be invited to!! I mean penguin suits?? Sign me up!

This video was created for the Recycle the Media assignment where we had to take only 5 pieces of media and mash it up to tell a story. The 5 materials I selected were 4 pictures and 1 audio file. The images I chose at random were: a guy and his reflective shades, a girl in a penguin suit, a girl sticking her tongue out, and a party scene. The audio I used was simply labeled “Scrap_yeah_yeah” so I’m assuming the song is called “Yeah Yeah.”

Since I still couldn’t get the Popcorn remixing program to work because of the flash player crisis I mentioned in my last blog entry, I had to use Final Cut again (not that I have a problem with it, it just takes a while for things to render sometimes.) I guess the story here is that the people in the pictures have waited all week for this day, and it’s finally here. They must buy all the snacks, prepare their costumes, and put on their game faces because tonight they’re going to stop everything they’re doing and PARTY like there’s no tomorrow!

The Sweet Escape

One tool that was suggested to us when remixing and mash-uping was Mozilla Popcorn Maker. In order to experiment with this, Alan created a video for us to remix. He left spaces open where we could add new media. Here is the video:

Yeah. I know, funny.

I was kind of scared to remix this video. When I first watched it, I saw the open spaces where he alotted us to add media and I was worried scared intimidated. AHHHH.

The Popcorn Maker made this intimidation feeling a little better. It took a while to get used to it because I had never used it before. It said I was missing a flash player but I always just ignore those information pop-ups. However, when I added media, Alan’s clips’ timing would be off. I installed my missing flash player.

Even after I conformed and installed my flash player, it seemed a little complicated trying to piece all of the objects together. I wanted it to flow well. Maybe it was just the way this assignment was laid out. It didn’t seem realistic to me {although a trip to the sun isn’t!} because it. If you want to know what I’m talking about, watch my finished product:

I created a lot of the pictures by editing them so that they would be more realistic. For example, I took a screenshot of the final grade screen on the original video and typed in my text. I overlayed the pictures with the videos. It took a lot of trial and error! A. LOT.

I got the sun video from YouTube. This is the video that I play at the end on the vacation clip. I got this song clip from SoundCloud:

I was trying to make this vacation video funny {aka – why I chose the sun to be the destination!} I think this was a great assignment to do for a remix tester. I got to test out the water and practice remixing. I will say that I’m going to try another editor for future remix/mashup assignments because this one seemed to take a lot of my patience {and I’m working with pre-kindergarten kids today so that’s not good}. It always took so long to load…and still does even now that it’s done. So sorry if you are waiting for a super duper long time for it to load. I did like how I could change and add to a video with my own work. I can see how this tool is liked by people when they are remixing/mashing things up.

The story that this *new* video tells is an interesting one. Alan said he wanted a vacation because this semester was rough… and boy, did he get one. I hope he also packed his sunscreen! I hear the UV-B rays and the risk for skin cancer is crazy high when you stay on the Sun!

SuperCut it!

This week I made a ‘supercut it‘ video featuring Agent Ziva from the television show NCIS.  Her character is originally from Israel and English is her second language.  She is constantly trying to use American idioms and butchering them.  I haven’t seen this show in ages but used to watch it in high school with my parents and she was always my favorite character.  Unfortunately, the majority of clips available of the show are mashups of her saying these ridiculous things, but I still picked my favorites and cut them out of other videos.  Here’s the end-result:

My favorite is the “porcuswine and porcupig” mix up.

Rugby rugby rugby

This was the first assignment I did on moviemaker, and so it’s a little rough.  I chose to do the sports mashup, which involved piecing together clips of great sports plays, but they were supposed to also tell a story.  I picked rugby as my sport, even though I could have probably picked any number of them.  The reason I chose rugby is because there is generally a set method for how to move the ball down the field;  first there is a scrum between the forwards on each team and the scrumhalf pulls the ball out of the back of the scrum; they then pass it out to the back line, who run/pass/kick the ball down the field in attempt to score a try.

I pieced together solid plays (for parts where there’s no real way to do anything interesting) and impressive plays for the whole process, starting with the scrum and ending with a really awesome move.

I unfortunately forgot the tips from last week involving resizing the clips so that they all fit together, but I will try to do better with the other assignments.

Stop Telephoning Me-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e…e.

Another assignment option was to show the evolution of a product; I chose the telephone.  I feel like telephones are something that have been around for a very long time, but are constantly changing (much like computers, which telephones basically are now).  Cell phones now that are considered archaic (flip phones?) were super cutting edge when I was in middle and high school.  So that’s where I got the idea for the product to use. The song was just common sense.

I also showed the evolution of the product in terms of social impacts – people are so attached to their phones now that it is common to see people on dates or hanging out in public and every person involved is glued to their own phones and not even interacting with each other.  So my video shows the progression from the earlier phones to that issue.

Foley Sounds, Chaplin Style

After having created a 30 second foley sound file a few weeks ago for a Charlie Chaplin silent film, this week we used other students’ files to create the whole film.

I used Karissa’s, Dr. Levine’s, Brittany’s, my own, cwyrough’s, and Kaitlyn’s sounds in my video:

This was mostly helpful in figuring out how to place audio in MovieMaker, as it doesn’t always fit in exactly where it should be at first.  Other than that, this was basically implementing the skills we learned last week with using mpeg streamclip and programs of the like.  MovieMaker is far easier than I remember it being a few years ago!  Probably not the best for higher-quality stuff but definitely got the job done for me and was easy to use.

I made a PSA, everyone.

Another option for an assignment was to make a PSA, which I was excited about.  I did mine about household fertilizer use.  It’s actually a really big problem and contributes to a lot of environmental issues, but not many people are aware of the consequences of making their lawns beautiful each spring.  Watching the commercials for these products, one might never guess that any harm could come of it!

That being said, I cheated juuuust a little with this one.  As my “I am me” video pointed out, I am an education intern with Friends of the Rappahannock. I teach fourth graders every week about watershed pollution, and one of the major things we talk about is the effects of fertilizers on watersheds.  I kind of just adapted my schpiel into a video and found pictures and videos to go along with it.  I downloaded and trimmed commercials for fertilizers, using various instructional videos and a couple of miracle-gro commercials.

I don’t know why I had so much trouble speaking – I recorded myself several times and kept stumbling.  That’s why there are a couple spots where I sound kind of weird — I did a bit of editing because I sounded even more troubled and stutter-y than the video even shows, but there are still a few hiccups in there.

If you didn’t know about this issue already though, you do now!

I am me

I chose to do the “I am me” assignment from the bank, which involved creating a video that described me.  I didn’t really understand the example video that was provided, but I may have just missed the point.  Either way, I diverged from that a bit with my example and tried to incorporate video, audio, pictures, and music with mine.  I ran into difficulty matching up the timing of what I was saying with the pictures showing, and once I finished that part I still had a lot of blank space that I didn’t know what to do with.  I filled those gaps with music, although I’m not really sure that it fit.  I just didn’t like the silence!!!

Some of the pictures I used are pretty old, but I really don’t have pictures taken of me very often so my options were kind of limited.  I could have taken some, I suppose, but they would have appeared very staged, so I opted for just using some older ones.
