WOAH! That’s what I must first say for this assignment. When I first saw this on the video assignment bank, I got so excited. As someone who loves to watch daily vlogs on youtube, I was glad to see this was an option for this week’s video assignments! I saw the assignment on Wednesday, which worked out great, because on Thursday I was attending a concert and catching up with friends. Here is what I did on March 31, 2016.
To create this video, I used my Sony Optical SteadyShot camera to shoot clips and used iMovie on my Macbook Pro to edit. I also incorporated a few clips from my phone. I am pretty glad with the outcome because I still am pretty new to iMovie and my Macbook in general.
In conclusion, if this assignment could be done again in the future, I would totally recommend it to my peers! It’s a great way to capture what you did in a day, and it can be looked back upon in the future.
So tell me, what did you do yesterday, March 31st?
A message delivered with a heavy heart to a Mr. Crawlston, telling him of the fate that may await him
I used an english-to-morse translation website for this and just put it in over top an image of a man standing over a coffin, to give it the appropriate tone then put the morse on top of the coffin as it went along.
This is the assignment that I was most worried about throughout the week because the assignment was to create a 2-3 minute mini-documentary about someone fascinating who is not a best friend or close family member. This made me the most worried because my 2 best friends and parents are the only people which I spend the most time with to be able to create a mini-documentary. Add in the fact that I just moved into a new house and don’t know any of the neighbors, and you can figure out why I would have such a hard time. This problem left me with the only option of having to make a mini-documentary about my created character.
All I had to figure out was “How can I make a documentary without any real people?”. This was a question I couldn’t figure out for a couple days until I thought about not directly showing any pictures of my created character. So I decided to make my mini-documentary a compilation of pictures of the western setting and dark/covered silhouettes that can’t be seen clearly combined with title cards for questions and audio of me answering the questions as the created character Buck Smith.
To accomplish this goal, I started googling and compiling a collection of western cowboy silhouette images that could be used for at least 6-10 seconds each. Then I imported all the images I felt that were needed for the compilation into iMovie. After I had done that, I wrote down which questions would be asked and answered during the mini-documentary; this was then used for the organization of the images in the documentary. I placed title cards with the questions before all images related to that certain question and then calculated the time between each title card. This way I could create audio files to fill in each section of images to provide audio as background to the images.
After I had finished importing and organizing the audio files in each specific section, I still didn’t feel like I had done enough. So I found background music to play in the background of the title cards. I went through my iTunes until I found the song by Jason Aldean “Tonight Looks Good on You” which had an instrumental intro that could be used as background music. At that point, I imported the song into iMovie and trimmed it to include only the beginning intro. I then copied and pasted the trimmed background music into all the title cards for consistently.
As for the answers to the questions I answered the questions of “Who Are You…Where Are You From…Describe Yourself” and then changed the direction of the mini-documentary by talking about the incident that has occurred this semester of Mr. Blackhawk being shot by Crazy Joe Shooter and Buck’s pursuit of him.
Overall, the worst part of the assignment was the actual thought process of coming up with what and how I could complete the assignment. Then when I finally figured out what and how I would complete the assignment, I felt more relaxed in my thought process and creation of this mini-documentary.
What? How odd, a tombstone with Crawlston on it, and his first name’s initial…

Just made a quick papercraft prop of a tombstone, simple and easy to make, all you have to do is download a template from a website, print it, cut it out, and follow the folding lines with some glue!
This assignment was one of the hardest assignments with trying to figure out what to do. The concept seemed easy with it being that you just have to take a 5 second film about anything. This means that you have to have something quick to film like a quick joke or gag; but I just couldn’t think of anything that funny in that short amount of time.
Then I remembered my dad’s plan for everyday life that he always says before he goes to work. However, I didn’t want it to feel scripted; so I just asked him what he planned to do on that day and secretly filmed him. He just so happened to say his usual plan of “Coming up with a plan to take over the world”, which he heard from “Pinky and the Brain” which is an animated tv series about 2 mice. The main character “Brain” said that phrase and now my dad always uses it.
After filming my dad, I imported the video into iMovie; added a visual filter (because it was dark footage), and then posted it to Youtube.
Overall, even though the video is a little longer than 5 seconds at 14 seconds. I am satisfied with the end result and I’m happy to have such a funny dad.
The second assignment of the week was to post a vine of a moving object. I figured this would be a fun, quick assignment that would give me more time to complete more complex assignments throughout the week. I also wanted to relate it to my character in some way, so I tried to think of something moving I could take a vine of.
Finally, I thought of canned beans being a good idea because my character loves eating beans in the western setting. It’s an on-the-go meal filled with protein and is easy to cook in a makeshift fire.
To make sure that I got good footage for the vine, I had my mom assist me by video taping the incident using vine. It was actually harder than I thought because my mom had never used Vine before, so we had to film a rolling can of beans 5 different times until my mom figured out how to use Vine to make a video. To portray the motion I had my mom roll the can of beans to me at the other end of the table.

The last thing that I had to do to complete the assignment was post the Vine somewhere and it turned out to be the hardest part of the assignment because for some reason it would not upload to Youtube. I ended up posting the Vine on the Twitter account, since that was the only place I actually knew it would definitely work.
Overall, this assignment was what I expected of it being of a fun and quick assignment. However, I didn’t expect the filming to take 5 different takes and now I’m thinking I should show my mom how Vine works.
This assignment was to create an intro that could be used for the beginning of a movie. You had to create an intro for any sort of movie that was around 1 minute to 1 minute and 30 seconds long, then narrate the beginning of the movie.
Since it was required that we have 10 stars worth of assignments related to our created character, I thought this assignment would be a great opportunity for stars for my character because of it being worth 4 and a half stars. So my objective was to find a video with a western theme and relate the narration to my character.
To complete this assignment I searched Youtube until I found a Planet Earth video that just showed beautiful views of desert settings. Then I transferred the video to iMovie and trimmed the video to be around 1 minute and 23 seconds. While searching for a perfect video of the western setting I came across background music on one of the videos that I felt would match better with the setting of the video I would use. So using Mp3ify, I found the video on Youtube with the background music of Gramatik by Brave Men and converted the video’s audio into a MP3 on my computer. After converting the audio to an MP3 I imported the music into iMovie and trimmed the song to match the video.
As for the narration, I figured that most movie intros only have the title narrated before the movie begins. I didn’t want the narration to take away from the beautiful desert backgrounds in the video. Also, since my character is sort of a mysterious character; I wanted to keep the mystery alive to begin the movie. To narrate the intro, I placed a title slide at the end of the video that said “The Unexpected” because it relates to the nickname for the created character of Buck Smith. After finishing the creation of the intro video I uploaded it to Youtube.
Overall, this was a pretty interesting assignment that I felt that I could have done more if I didn’t feel the pressure of doing so many video assignments throughout the week. But enough of my talking, here is the intro.
I completed the four and a half star Mini Documentary.
I applied this assignment to my character, creating a mini synopsis of the first third of his life.
I utilized Audacity and iMovie to create this movie.
With Audacity I recorded my dialogue and applied a song in the background. I imported the mp3 created with Audacity into iMovie. I explored the internet for images which best represented my characters backstory and imported them into iMovie as well. While in the movie editing application, I edited both the pictures and sound to match up with each other. The finished product is seen above.
The hardest part of this assignment was finding images that best represented my character and his story. Images of western cattle ranchers in the 1800s are few and far between which is due to the fact that photographs were expensive and rare for most people. So only a couple photographs would exist per person. I didn’t realize this fact when planning out the video or recording the audio.
I completed the three and a half star assignment Name That Book.
I used the app vine to create a short video. In the video are hand drawn symbols representing a certain book. I was trying to think of how to represent a book using inanimate objects laying around me, but I couldn’t quite find the right ones I needed. So, I ended up drawing a bunch of pictures that represent the words in a book title.
