Wild Beast on the Scene!

For the mandatory video assignment, I decided to complete “What’s the Weather in your Neck of the Woods?” starring my dog as a wild beast and I as the the news reporter. I first scripted what I wanted to say. Then I got my boyfriend to hold the camera for me while I spoke. During the time I spoke, my younger sister held my dog in her arms then released her for further action. You’ll see in the clip below.

To put everything together, I added the video clips to my Macbook Pro then transferred them to iMovie. Now this was my first time using iMovie so it was very difficult at first, but I slowly got the hang of it. This is because I just recently bought my first Macbook, and I was previously a Windows user, so I was pretty talented with Windows Movie Maker.

Did you create this assignment? If not, which one did you complete? Let me know in the comments below.

My ā€˜excitingā€™ hobby, painting miniatures.

It’s really hard to create a video when your best recording devices is a tie up between your phone and your laptop’s webcam. At first I consideredĀ trying to do a slideshow of stages of painting a model for this project, but afterĀ taking the first couple pictures while painting, I realized they were hardly better, so instead I stuck closer to the assignment and just did a short video of me actively doing the hobby. Still unfortunately can’t get good quality, but it went better in my opinion since the hobby was at least actively happening.

Small Soldiers Spoiler

In this assignment we had to spoil a movie by making a short video. This entailed finding all the major scenes relevant to the movie and combining them all into one small video.

I couldn’t think of any movie that I wanted to spoil for anyone that was recent. So I decided to do an old school spoiler for one of my favorite action movies growing up Small Soldiers. Since I was 5 years old, Small Soldiers has been one of my favorite action movies just for the fact that it had military toys. I’ve collected them all. It’s not a major spoiler because the villain of Major Chip Hazard dies at the end, but it’s still a spoiler for the movie.

This video assignment was a little more easier than the other assignments because the whole movie was already broken up into clips on Youtube. So after converting those clips to MP4, I cut them down some more and added them altogether. The first scene basically shows how the Commando Elite move, talk, and their main objective of destroying the Gorgonites. Then I go to another scene where they now outnumber the Gorgonites and humans protecting them, but the Commando Elite have created weapons that could seriously hurt people and consider the humans also as the enemy. The last scene I use is Major Chip Hazard’s death that causes an EMP to kill off the rest of the Commando Elite.

Hope your not too sad at this spoiler. It’s a little longer than 30 seconds, but it’s still a very short video.

Kingsman: The Secret Service Silent Trailer

For this assignment, I had to make a 3-5 minute movie trailer formatted the same way as movie trailers from the silent era where the trailers had black & white, silent dialogue, musical backgrounds, and title cards.

The movie trailer that I decided to use for the assignment was Kingsman: The Secret Service. I chose this trailer because it was right at 3 minutes at 2:55 and I actually really liked this movie. It was action-packed and comedic, which are exactly the types of movies that I have always liked. Plus, I figured a spy movie would be perfect for a silent era trailer.

For completing the assignment, I used Firefox once again to convert the trailer from Youtube to the compatible MP4 used in iMovie. After importing the trailer into iMovie, I placed the silent era filter onto the trailer; but it still had sound, so had to use another feature of iMovie to mute all sound.

I didn’t know what title cards were until I looked them up. Then after putting the trailer together, I tried to spreading them out throughout using vague explanations to keep the audience still informed about what the trailer is about. It was quite easy to create the cards because it was yet another feature that could be used in iMovie.

The last thing that I needed to do for the trailer was put in some movie soundtrack music for the background. I wanted music that was instrumental and would build up throughout the trailer. I searched through my iTunes looking for anything instrumental, until I realized that the only movie soundtrack music I had that was instrumental would fit perfect with the trailer. It was the soundtrack music from the first Transformers movie by Steve Jablonsky called “Arrival to Earth” and the song was continually building up. I decided to test out the music on the trailer, and then watched it. It matched everything that I wanted out of the trailer; so I kept it in the trailer.

To conclude, I am really proud of the end result of this silent era trailer.

Highlight Mix

This was by far the coolest assignment that I had the chance to do. The assignment was channel my inner ESPN and clip together a highlight mix to your favorite athlete, adding music to the background, and having an intro. I have so many favorite athletes, so it was hard to pick just one player to create a highlight mix for. I ended up creating a highlight mix for Giannis Antetokounmpo, also known as the “Greek Freak”, due to his long wingspan and unlimited athletic potential ability. I chose the Greek Freak because he has been one of the reasons why my fantasy basketball team has gone so far. Also, he has exceeded expectations by a large margin and I appreciate players that have tried hard to exceed expectations.

I had never used iMovie or any sort of video editing softwares, so it was definitely an experience trying to figure out how iMovie worked in creating the highlight. After fiddling around with all the features of iMovie I still needed clips to mix together. Using Firefox, I was able to grab the videos that I needed clips from by converting them to compatible MP4s that is used in iMovie. After I had all the videos needed for the highlight mix, I delete the parts that I didn’t want from each video and clipped all the clips together to make a pretty good highlight mix.

For the music in the background, I wanted to find some sort of music that would be related to basketball and hype up the audience. I figured rap music would be the best choice for a highlight mix because all the best highlight mixes I’ve seen usually has rap music that tries to hype you up for the player in the heights. I didn’t want to purchase any more music, so I decided to go through my own iTunes to find a song. Finally I found 2 songs that I felt would be good for hyping up the audience; but the only thing that might be a problem is that there are curse words in the songs. I figured were all adults and Youtube didn’t flag it, so I kept the songs in the mix.

Now for the intro, I guess the theme that I used with iMovie includes placing the name of the video in the beginning. So I figured that was intro enough. Also, I had the first clip with real-time sound from that game; and then switched to the background music after the first clip. This was the intro that I felt wasn’t too flashy, yet was satisfying for the viewers.

Overall, this assignment was the funnest assignment I’ve done in Digital Storytelling and I hope to make more athlete highlight mixes in the future for my own enjoyment.

My First Attempt with iMovieā€¦

My last big assignment of the week was to do a video essay. As you can tell- I was really putting this off. I consider myself… well not very tech savvy and I knew creating this video essay would be challenging. I decided to go with the movie No Room to Die. It was a pretty good movie though it confused me at some points who was good and who was bad. The scene I selected was near the end of the movie when the main character brings a bag of money in order to set a woman free from the “bad guys.” In order to do this video analysis I readĀ How to Read a MovieĀ andĀ Mathematical Editing of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. These were helpful to me seeing as I knew absolutely nothing on the topic of film analysis. The first thing I did was select the seen I wanted. After this I used 4k video download software to get the clip off youtube then used MPEG Streamclip to cut the scene I wanted from the full movie. This scene I then uploaded to iMovie and did the voice over and the editing. I used the information about rhythm of jump shots from the Mathematical Editing movie and the information on dominant characters from How to Read a Movie. I think my video turned out good, not great. I feel like maybe I should have picked a different scene with more too it, but for my first time doing this I am pretty proud. I give a lot of credit to youtubers who do this all the time. It is a lot of work. Took me over two hours just to do editing alone, but again I am NOT tech savvy.

Talieā€™s DIY Commercial

One of this weekā€™s tasks was to complete ten stars worth of video assignments, four of which had to involve my western character. As such, for this assignment I acted as my character, Talie. You can read more about Talie here. This assignment required me to create a commercial for something I created myself. As such, the product I created for my commercial was a chocolate protein shake. Talie markets this chocolate protein shake as Talieā€™s Terrific and Nutritious Rejuvenation Shake. Within the commercial I try to direct the product toward farmers and ranchers who need to replenish their bodies after working out on the ranch all day. These farmers and ranchers compose a large part of the population in Talieā€™s town (Tombstone, AZ). In the commercial I go through how to make the shake and the ingredients that I used.

To create this video I had to first decide what my DIY project would be then I had to figure out how to tie my western character into the commercial. Next, I had to make the protein shake so I could use it to display in my commercial. I videoed myself acting as Talie on my phone and then saved the video to my computer and uploaded it to youtube so I could embed it here. Hope you would buy one of Talieā€™s terrific and nutritious rejuvenation shakes! This assignment was worth five stars.

The Weather in Tombstone, Arizona

I found this assignment actually quite fun to complete. For this assignment I had to act as a meteorologist and inform my listeners on the upcoming weather conditions. For this week we had to complete ten stars worth of video assignments and at least four of those stars had to revolve around my created western character. As such, for this assignment I acted as my western character, Talie. You can read more about Talie here. I acted as if Talie was the town meteorologist and as such only focused on providing the weather conditions for the little western town where she lives, Tombstone, Arizona. I mostly used realistic weather conditions and added in some comments on how the weather would affect daily activities of those who live in the town. So, if you are interested in the weather in Tombstone, AZ you can tune to DS106 weather channel with Talie, the meteorologist below!

I used my phone to video myself acting out this assignment and then saved it to my computer and uploaded it to youtube which allowed me to embed it here within this post. This assignment was worth two stars.

Backwards Cat

For my last video assignment of the week I completedĀ Play it Backward, Jack. It is worth 3 stars to finish me out at 10 1/2 stars this week. This assignment tells you to take a normal activity, but play the video backwards. For this I decided to use my cat, Snowball. I recorded him coming up the stairs with Snapchat on the iPhone. Then used the app’s editing program to make the video go backwards. Following this, I uploaded it to youtube. I love how it turned out! Made me laugh!

The Galapagos Islands

Continuing on with my video assignments for the week, I selected to doĀ It’s Vacation Time. It is worth 3 1/2 stars to bring my total up to 7 1/2 stars thus far. This assignment tells you to make a video of your favorite vacation. Last month I studied abroad with UMW in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador so I thought I would use this! I used iMovie on the mac. I uploaded some pictures from the trip and then added background music. Following this, I uploaded it to youtube. I am happy how it turned out! I took like a million pictures, but these were a few of my favorites.
