Video Assignment #3

The lip synch! woot!

This was the most fun to do. I initially wanted to do it to Carole King’s Way Over Yonder. However, that was WAY too depressing for ds106 (and I already associate that song with funerals..bad). Instead, I dug into what songs are really fun to sing. BETSY Q!!!! Yes, that crazy lady that visited my elementary school every year with the piano and the crazy songs and the berets and yeah, you get the point. And classically, the one I most remember is the I Say No Rap about anti-drugs.

I love to rap. A lot. So I turned on my webcam. I opened iTunes and downloaded the rap. I played it from my library after turning the webcam on. Once I was done lip synching, I just saved the video. It automatically went onto my videos on my hard-drive.  I put it on youtube. This is YouTube gold. Although not Nicole337 material, because I realized that she ACTUALLY sings her songs herself.

PROBLEMS: My daggone body movements were a lot harder to do. I was not sure if I should include hand motions or not, so I stayed pretty simple. I also had a hard time remembering the number of ‘nos’ in the rap. But I LOVE BETSY Q and have since I was five years old. This rap is gold. I love it. I have probably sung that song over 1000 times because it is so fun!

I hope you guys like it. Here it is:

Also, it is VERY embarrassing. Like I felt like I was getting in touch with my middle school self and crossing that off the bucket list.

Falafel Begins

Video Assignment Count: 12

After finishing an assignment were I redubed all of the audio I decided to d the next logical step and complete Joining the Conversation where I only had to dub half the conversation.

Here’s the result:

Now you’re probably asking yourself, “why Isaac. why choose this movie to use in your assignment?” Well friends it should be obvious: Batman is awesome. Also in the world of the internet this scene is parodied quite often and with good results. However as that video shows, almost everyone always messes with what Batman says, because let’s face it he’s kind of goofy in this scene. So as I watched it again, I thought two things 1) dude just dropped his falafel, that sucks 2) what if he was completely not scared the whole time?

Oh by the way for those you who who’ve been living under a rock here’s the orginial:

So. There wasn’t a lot of previous work to work off of. Only one other person has completed the assignment and their link doesn’t work. Other than the Godfather/fluffy cat example and the link in the other paragraph most of the inspiration came right form the ol’ noggin.

Making it was pretty simple, and almost identical to my There Will Be Blood redub. Here what I did was (once in Final Cut Pro) detach the audio. Then play the clip like normal, then when it was the upside down man’s turn to speak I would cut out all of his audio and record a voice over in that time slot. It took me a couple times to get the timing correct but I was able to bang it our pretty quickly. The recording process as wasn’t as hard as last time, because I already had a planned script in my brain.

That’s pretty much it. Just youtube, Final Cut, Batman, and the tasty tasty power of falafel.

Oh, so Brave!

We went back in time!

For the assignment Return to the Silent Era, we had to “take a 3-5 minute trailer of a modern movie and render it in the form of the silent era- convert to black and white, add effects to make it look antiquated, replace the audio with a musical sound track.”

For this assignment I decided to get the trailer from the movie Brave and make it a Silent Black and White movie.  The movie is about a young girl going on a quest, and her actions and ambitions are easily portrayed in the film, and even the movie trailer.  This was the first video assignment I decided to do, and I am glad that I chose to do it first.  This assignment took me the longest out of all of my other videos.

This video allowed for me to get started on iMovie and do things that I didn’t even know I could do.  The reason it took me the longest was because I refused to look at the tutorials on the website, or even on any YouTube sites.  I wanted to figure it all out on my own.  Eventually, I figured out how to change the settings to make the movie black and white.  Muting the audio was fairly easy as well, it just took a while to figure everything out and getting started on the video editing.   The assignment calls for the clip to be between 3-5 minutes.  I decided to do a movie trailer that was about 2:30.  For this movie, I didn’t want to choose a clip because I felt that if you hadn’t seen it, a clip wouldn’t have been enough for people to really get the concept of the movie.  I feel that having the movie be silent really makes people watch the details of the movie and actually create their own story rather than listening to what is happening.

I decided that que-cards would really take away from the clip.  Two weeks ago we had to watch a movie while it was muted, with sound only, and one with both.  I really enjoyed watching the movie without sound because it made me realize of so many little details that I was not aware off.  I wanted people to grab the same concept with this trailer so I decided to opt-out of doing them.  Although this is a silent movie, I decided to add non-lyrical music to it.  The reason to have non-lyrical music was because again, I didn’t want to take away from the clilp itself and wanted the main focus to be on that.  I thought it was only fair to use a song from the movie as the background song for my trailer.  The song is called Fate and Destiny by Patrick Doyle and it comes straight from the soundtrack.  I think the song fits perfectly on some parts more than others but it was the best choice for this.

Worth 5 Stars

Lion King : Framed

For my last Video Assignment of this week I decided to do the “Framed” version of one of my favorite movies and scenes. The assignment asked for a 2 minute movie scene and a picture from the scene that represents the scene at best.

For this Framed assignment I decided to do the ending scene from the Lion King. I thought that this would be an awesome scene to represent because this is probably one of my favorite childhood movies and this scene is so significant. The movie represents a theme of Heroism and I think the framed picture that I took from this scene represents that as well. This movie is always really easy to use for a lot of assignments simply because I don’t know a single person who hasn’t seen it and wouldn’t understand the reference.

The clip that I chose from the movie was the ending scene where Simba is finally acknowledged as the King and able claim his dominance after the support of his family and friends. I decided on this scene because I knew that it would be easy to frame a picture that represents not only the scene but a huge aspect of the overall movie.

After finding my clip on youtube, I simply used www.keepvid.com to download it onto my computer… I watched the video numerous times, but decided on the picture I wanted and simply took a screenshot of it and uploaded it onto my flickr account.

Here’s the clip that I decided I would represent:

I took the shot of Simba being onto of the cliff howling in order to claim his dominance and acceptance of his new found role as King.

5 Stars: Movie Scenes that Changed my Life

For one of my video assignments, I chose to do the “Movie Scenes that Changed our Lives” assignment that was worth 5 stars.  I ended up choosing 3 movies that had a profound impact on me and 1 that just terrified the crap out of me.

I can’t remember when I first saw “The Sandlot”, but I fell in love with it instantly.  I quote either the “You play ball like a girl!” line or the “You’re killing me, Smalls” line frequently.  It’s a great coming of age story about friendship and baseball.  I’m not the biggest baseball fan, but the lessons it taught me about sticking by your friends have really stuck with me.

And then I had another sports movie.  ”D2: The Mighty Ducks.”  It features one of my favorite speeches, which I showcased in the video.  I mention that I don’t really care for the movie because it kind of makes a mockery of the sport I love, but whatever.  The point is that Gordon Bombay’s speech has stuck with me throughout life.  Also, I like quacking.

Next up we have the scariest movie I ever watched as a kid: “The Ring.”  That girl crawling out of the tv makes me incredibly uneasy to this day.  Something about the way she distorted the faces of people she killed just…. ick.  Freaks me out, man.  But since watching this movie I’ve learned to enjoy horror movies more.

Finally, my favorite movie, “The Big Lebowski.”  I think I explain it really well in the video, so get your explanation from there.  Sorry for the crap quality.

I ran everything through windows movie maker and then threw in transitions for good measure.

11/16 Stars down.

5 Second movieeeeee

The next assignment that I decided to do for this week was to create a 5 second movie. This assignment asks for the creation of a movie that last 5 seconds …. it could represent anything really.

For this assignment I decided to create a movie with a small joke. I initially wanted my friends to act out something that was quick, funny, and easy to do …. of course having the friends that I have.. it turned out a lot funnier than I planned and far from what I actually wanted to do. I initially wanted the girl to come out of the room really upset and the guy to come out after her and yell at Trav (the one already standing in the scene) “Dude you slept with my girlfriend” then go ahead and tackle him to the ground. I tried convincing them to do that about 5 times and none of them could stay serious for as long as 5 seconds. After numerous attempts and lots of laughter and joking around … one of my friends simply came out saying “Did you know Sam’s a virgin” …. I thought it turned out a lot funnier than the other ones that we filmed and therefore I decided to keep it and use it for my 5 second movie. I think it made it a lot funnier considering it was so unplanned and my friend Connor (the speaker) came up with it on the spot. I simply recorded this happening on my iPhone and then imported it onto my computer. I then put it onto my iMovie, added a title to bring in the laughter and then uploaded it onto youtube … not bad at all. The video is actually 7 seconds, but it’s simply because of the title in the beginning. I got a really huge kick out of this assignment, I guess because funnier things happen when they go unplanned. I definitely had a set planned and I even yelled “action” when I wanted them to come out of the door…. It felt like I was actually creating a movie & I totally appreciated my friends agreeing to do it, even though they were being a tad annoying about getting it done.

I chose to do this assignment because I realized that we were working with Video Assignments for a reason….. I’ve done various assignments this week and I’ve gotten a chance to mess around with music, video editing, and now I finally got a chance to do some of my own filming as well. It was a lot more fun than I expected and I’m glad I can say I made my own movie …. even though it was for only 5 seconds and it wasn’t really my directing that I ended up picking. Regardless, STILL FUN!

Video Assignment #2

For this assignment, I picked redubbing the audio.

First, pick the clip you want. I chose to do a clip from A League of Their Own. I love the scene where Tom Hanks totally goes off and talks about how “there’s no crying in baseball”.

Second, make sure this is a clip that can have the audio changed to a completely different meaning. I chose to make it about him breaking up with her, since she is crying and all. Suggestion: Remember the Titans cafeteria scene: make Denzel’s monologue about the horrible quality of cafeteria food rather than about intermingling.

I downloaded the clip from youtube using iLivid. Just put the URL into iLivid and it will do the work for you. This downloads the clip directly to your videos folder. From there, I moved the clip into Adobe Premiere. Since I had already spent a lot of time with Premiere from Assignment #1, I felt a lot better. Suggestion: Play around with Premiere before using it. It’s better to practice than really mess something up.

I named the project ‘no crying in baseball’. From the left bottom, I simply clicked and dragged my video file (freshly imported) to the main box. Once it showed up on the upper right screen, I played it to make sure it worked and got a feel for what I needed to do and then I went where it shows the video and audio tracks on a timeline and clicked the little speaker/volume control by the audio track. This muted the clip, which is what you need to do. I docked Premiere to the left of my screen using windows button and left arrow. I opened audacity and put it to the right side of my screen (windows button + right arrow). I pressed record in audacity and then pressed play for the clip in premiere. As I was watching the video, I recorded myself saying things after a breakup. The only downside is being able to play one character. After my recording was finished, I clipped out parts I didn’t need–long silences and such by using the highlight and delete method.

I exported the audio as mp3 to my desktop. I went back to Premiere and then imported the mp3. Just like with the video, I dragged it from the left bottom side over to the right bottom side where it showed up on the audio 2 track timeline thing. I played the clip to make sure it at least made somewhat sense. I trimmed the excess with the razor tool in Premiere. Then I went to file–export–media. I chose to export as MPEG4 to my desktop; I also checked the maximum render quality box. I then uploaded my clip to youtube. Here it is:

Suggestion: the shorter the clip, the easier it is to manage.

Die Young in the Hunger Games

Watching film with the stereo on

For this assignment I chose Ke$ha’s “Die Young” to go over top the cornucopia blood bath scene of the Hunger Games. I like the juxtaposition of the up beat music with the brutal and bloody scene of the movie. Also, I was able to match up the lyrics really well with the events in the clip. I used YTD Video Downloader to download the clips and convert the Hunger Games clip to an MP4 file so that I could edit it in streamclip. I then used YTD it convert them to Windows Media Files so that I could work with it in Windows Movie Maker. For the Ke$ha video I used YTD to convert it in to an MP3 and edit it in audicty. In Movie Maker I imported my edited clips and worked them until I was happy with the timing.

Video Assignment #1

For this assignment, I chose to do the silent movie.

First, I had to choose a movie. I chose the trailer of Elf because I start watching Christmas movies right after Halloween (or during…). I picked the trailer because it gave such a good overview.  I downloaded it from youtube using iLivid, you just paste the URL in there and it will automatically download the video for you. Once the video was downloaded, I put it into Adobe Premiere. Here’s where it began to take about 6 hours to finish.

I had never really worked with Premiere and there is a HUGE learning curve. Finding out how to mute the track volume was not difficult at all, mainly because when you look to the bottom right of the program, it lists Video 1 and Audio 1. I simply muted the audio. The big problem came with those dang cue cards. I used ones that nearly everyone else I looked at had used. The hard part was figuring out what text to put on them. Once I decided, I tried to import them into Premiere. BIG TROUBLE! I could not for the life of me get these puppies to work right.

I took a deep breath and finally got them spliced in where I needed them, although it chopped up the video and at one point I had two of the same exact thing playing…anyway! (Also, please excuse the third one because it lasts wayyyyy too long but I did not know how to cut it down without messing up the entire video. I tried using the razor tool but it wouldn’t let me slide the rest of the video down to fill in the gaps…so it just leaves more time for the audience to read.) I went to the dropdown menu of video effects and added black adn white and noise by simply pulling those options directly on to the timeline thing of the video and audio. Once I got that mess straightened out, I pulled in the music from the soundtrack. I chose the nutcracker suite because it’s instrumental and it actually ended up going really well with the clip I selected (plus, it came from the soundtrack.)

After what felt like an eternity razoring the video and trying to get everything perfect, I decided to export the media as an mp4. I chose maximum render quality and it exported within a few minutes to my desktop. From there, I put it on youtube and then blogged about it here. Hooray!

The End

For this assignment, I had to tell a story in one second. Although, my video consists of only two words, it does indeed tell a story. Because if you think deep thoughts about the meaning of those two words, many things can come to mind. More so, than telling a story, I suppose this story makes one think. What is ‘the end’? In the description, I added a quote that has the words ‘the end.’ What thoughts does the quote make you think of? The point of this story is the make you think.
