LOLshakespeare

2.5 Stars

So I totally decided to do the Shakespearean LOLcats visual assignment because WHO DOESN’T LOVE LOLcats?! And it goes hand in hand with my love for animals! Here is it!

asI chose this picture because when I think of cats I always think of what they get themselves into, then I saw the quote from Macbeth by Shakespeare and it was like fate, I had to do it.

What’s your love?

Love: In Three Frames
3 Stars
Visual Assignment

I chose three pictures that I thought summed up a relationship that summed up Brooke Davis. Honestly, this was completely easy. My final project was going to be about Brooke fulfilling a lifelong dream of having her own clothing line, making her own clothes, and presenting them at a fashion show. So of course, I chose a picture of Brooke Davis, since the relationship was about her, a photo of sketches she had made for the clothing line, and then the name of her clothing line, Clothes over Bros, on the wall at her store.

Fotor B Davis Collage

To create this three-framed photo, I used Fotor, which is a picture editor as well as a collage creator application. I chose the three photos that I wanted to use for the frame and opened them up into the app. I then used the photo stitching option on the right hand side which allowed me to align the photos side by side, or up and down; I chose the side by side option. I changed the outline color to black, and I rounded the edges of the pictures to give it an edgy side, because if anyone has watched One Tree Hill, or is just a Brooke Davis fan, we all know she is completely on the edgy side. After I was content with my editing, I saved the frame and this became “Love: In Three Frames”

Show Me Their Emotions – Creating My Own Assignment

Show Me Their Emotions!
A Visual Assignment Created for Ds106…

emojiiiii

From the different emojis shown, take a picture of different people replicating at least 4 emojis. After taking the pictures, place them in a collage, photo line, or what have you (make it creative!) and make your own caption about the person and the emotion their face is showing. For example, if you chose the smiling face, a caption could be “TGIF!!!!!!”

Candle use 3

Candle use 2

Candle use 1

For this Visual Assignment we were to take an object we had photographed and think of some different versions of the object. I chose to photograph a pineapple shaped candle we have in our kitchen. In the first scene it makes a cartoon character that could promote suntan lotion. In the second picture I used the pineapple for exactly what its modeled after and put them in their natural habitat. In the final scene its an atomic bomb, I thought the shape was perfect. To put together the new scenes I used powerpoint and put them together with pictures from the internet.

Check Out My New Album

Album Cover

For this Visual Assignment we were tasking with taking random input and making an album cover. Accordingly my band’s name is House Grey Memorandum with our hit new album Do What You Can. Looking at my band name I decided they were going to be an alternative band. Judging by the title Do What You Can I figured this album could be about the band wanting to go back to a simpler time. When I saw the picture of the boys I thought it was perfect because it looks like it was an older picture and they were standing outside their old town.

To make the cover I added the band and album name in a way I thought was artistic and stood out. As for the picture, I edited its color and appearance in powerpoint. I gave it a sepia color scheme and a plastic wrap filter to give it an old timey photo feel.

The Energizer Energy Forte

Car GIF

For this assignment we were to take two pictures in slightly different positions to create a GIF that would yield a 3D effect. I chose to take two pictures of my car. At first I could decide what to make my subject, but I finally I thought what better muse than my baby. I like the effect the picture overlap has. Its not necessarily a 3D view, but it gives the car life. To me it looks like the car is beckoning to you to drive it, like a real life car from the movie Cars. I also thought it looked like the car was dancing to some music. In any case I thought it was fun. In regard to the photos I like how the light behind me gives a gleam to the front of the car as it slowing fades to darkness. I chose to do an angled view so only parts of the front were close to add a little depth.

Back To Basics (With My Dawg)

For my last Visual Assignment of the week, I chose to do the Back To Basics visual assignment. This assignment, is essentially to take any picture you want and edit it to make a stencil style version of the picture. If you would like to check out the assignment for yourself, you can find it here.

Here’s the photo that I originally used, to create my stencil photo of:

IMG_1400

This is a photo of my dog Lobo, and here is my stencil photo of him:

Back To Basics

I think this stencil image turned out very well. It was a little bit difficult, because Lobo is gray and white, it was difficult to manipulate the colors, so that it was neither too dark nor too light. As you can see it really accentuates the part of his face from the eyes up. Where as the nose area is not as defined due to the lack of color on his nose.

To create this stencil image, I used Photoshop Online Free it is almost identical to Photoshop, but online based. To start, I uploaded my photo onto this site, and cropped it to my desired size. Then, I posterized the photo. Next, I changed the threshold on the photo, until I reached a point where I felt the best stencil effect was achieved. I learned these steps by following a few simple steps from Instructables.com, if you would like to check out the tutorial, go here.

I really liked this assignment, it really helped with my skills in Photoshop, but it also helped me notice how stencil images can change the focus of images. For example in my first photo I feel that the focus is on my dog, Lobo, in general. In the stencil version, the focus changes from Lobo overall, to mainly his eyes. The darkness combined with the faint spots of white really help the eyes pop. Overall, this assignment, Back To Basics, was really good, and not too difficult.

This assignment is worth a total of 2 stars.

Upping my total for the week to 8 stars, and finishing my visual assignments for the week. So this post is basically over, I hope you guys enjoyed. Happy Sunday my friends.

Becoming a Better Photographer: Rule of Thirds

The tip that I ended up using in this photo was the rule of thirds.  It is difficult to be fully conscious of this rule when taking pictures, however I managed to make it work in this picture!  The UMW campus is crawling with all kinds of furry critters, and when I spotted this rabbit sitting close to the walk I decided to try and capture a picture.  Here is how it turned out!

IMG_1490

The rabbit is positioned in the bottom left quadrant of the picture  Looking towards the top, one might notice that the flowering tops of the grass/weeds are above the theoretical top horizontal line, while the stems are positioned almost completely below.   The picture below better illustrates the rule in action.

Another tip that I tried was the use of a great foreground as well as background.  The detail of the leaves in the foreground is complimented nicely by the looming building in the background.

For my last photo I decided to see what kind of interesting effects I could create with light.  I taped a 20 dollar bill to a ceiling light and got a really cool picture-

Seeing as I do not have an actual camera, I had to use my iPhone for all of my pictures this week.  It really limited my options, but I am very happy with how my pictures turned out!

Photo Blitz

This assignment was really cool. I decided to clock my grocery shopping and do it while I was in Wegmans. People looked at me like I was crazy but I ended up getting some great photos. Grocery shopping is a way I relax and I love photography so combinging the two was great. Below are some of my favorite photos from the ‘Photo Blitz.’

1. Take a photo with an interesting shadow.

IMG_1374

This photo was literally from a container of Pumpkin flavored beer. I loved how beautiful it was while still being kind of creepy. The shadow behind the pumpkin is great. It added so much to the photograph. I loved this packaging so much that I bought the beer.

2. Take a photo of someone else’s hand.

IMG_1383

This picture was on a ad for helping hands. I decided to cut out the girl because she would have made the photo uneven. I took a couple pictures where I caught people reaching for produce but I loved this photo the best. The picture had great coloring. This is a #nofilter picture. :)

3. Take a picture with a metaphor.

IMG_1382

First off namaste. I chose this picture because I felt like it had deeper meaning behind it. This is the magazine rack by the front doors in Wegmans. Namaste is a yoga symbol but it also has a deeper meaning of living well and balenced. The sign above it says live well. I think the two were placed together on purpose.

4. Take a picture of two things that do not belong.

IMG_1369

I chose this picture because come on how perfect is the difference between the two. I imagine someone being like “i am going to eat healthy” then walk through the baked goods and be like “nah, cookies it is.” Perfect.

5. Take a picture of something dominated by one color.

IMG_1373I always have to walk through the cheese section of Wegmans. It is just too amazing not to snoop around. It smells terrible but there are so many kinds of cheese my brain and stomach so not know where to go. I like to think of this picture as my ode to cheese. I just love it. Despite it being dominated by the color white, it still has depth and is interesting to look at.

If you want to some of the photos I did not use, check them out… here.

This picture is just all around awesome. It looks like she used a fish eyed lens. The contrast between the sand, sky, and sea is awesome. This is a picture that I would put into my house! She did a great job with the coloring and contrast.

This picture is just so cool. I love the angle of Apollo. He looks very regal. It captures the lizard in great lighting. She did a great job displaying the lizard.

This picture is a great use of shadows. It is really a lighting fixure but she captured it so perfectly that one thinks it is a pumpkin creature. At least that is what I thought. She did a great job catching just the right shadow.

Apophenia

I found this assignment (3 1/2 stars) to be the most difficult. It wasn’t the assignment that drove me crazy, it was finding the right object to use. I eventually decided on using these colored shot glasses that were just sitting in a box in my room. But now the real challenge was, “How am I going to get creative with this”?

Since I have not installed Photoshop on my Macbook yet, it kind of prevented me from creating some fun and crazy ideas with this object. I decided to mix it up, using drawings and other objects to create different themes. Don’t expect to be blown off your feet, the following images are amateur and basic.

I thought with the right angle, I could make it look a trash can/bin of some sort. But I needed to take it a step further and make it look as if trash is really in there. So I grabbed some old receipts, ripped them up in tiny pieces, and crumbled them up. Obviously, I placed them in the trash can and Voila!

IMG_4218Next up, was a simple drawing of an unknown character. I placed the shot glasses to resemble bulging eyes of some sort. Now that I look at it, it kind of reminds me of a goofy, evil villain. Not too much thought went into this, I just started drawing around the objects, and this was the outcome.

IMG_4219

So I found this stuffed animal of a baby monkey with his mother. Decided to use the shot glass as a party hat for the young one. It could have been celebrating a birthday or not. It’s all in the imagination (I’m just making this up as I go along).

IMG_4220

Finally, I was trying to think of one more example I could use with this object. When I flipped them vertically, I got the image in my head that these king of resembles teepee’s (spellcheck?). With the best of my ability, I drew some lines at the top of each teepee that is supposed to be twigs to hold up the little fort.
