This was my submission for the Visual Assignment “Triple Troll Quote”. Ā Enjoy!

My Big Fat Greek Triple Troll Epigraph

Here we see Valchek and Sobotka going at each other, but the quote is from Little Big Roy where he’s speaking about the shipping ports and how everything is becoming more automated. Ā The good old days are gone. The Greek tends to speak with better grammar, so I thought this was a good mash-up.

Start new.. Shining Rainbow!

“A picture is worth a thousand words.” I wanted to do this Visual Asssignment, because it’s a fun and funny assignment to do. Plus when The Wire started it’s second season, I saw tons of comparable pictures to this assignment of making a rainbow. Here below are what I thought:

Red:

When the first episode of Season 2 started and later on it came to Bodie going to the car which is the color red, I was thinking “Why is the color red?”. The reason why I thought of the question to myself is that look at the other cars that the Barksdale organization drive, it’s mostly the color black or white. It’s interesting that Bodie’s driving the car with the color red. I assume like it’s a new season so they want to start new things.

Bodie's Red Car

Orange:

I find it usual that these type of workers use their orange color vest when working like below of Nick and Frank wearing their orange color vest. Like I said before, it’s a new season so the crew wants to start new things. The first season we haven’t seen usually workers wearing their orange vests that much as it’s showing in the first episode of the second season.

Yellow:

You know I’m going to be honest here, this particular scene is my favorite scene. Coming back to your usual workplace and meeting with old and best friends. The color Yellow is shown during this scene such as on McNultys collar and the sign that says “I love City”. Especially the police picture on McNultys jacket, part of it is yellow.

Yellow Everywhere

Green:

At the Funeral place where Stringer and his crew are doing the business, I wasn’t surprised how the green flowers were there. I mean it’s a funeral place, so of course there would be flowers there. The flowers are green so I wanted this particular scene to correspond to this assignment part of it with the color green of rainbow. I remember in the last episode of Season 1 at the funeral place, I don’t remember any flowers showing during the scene.

Blue:

This opening scene where McNulty and his boss I thought was interesting because McNulty talks about where his father used to work in the factory that they showed and his boss was saying he as well had someone that worked in that factory. McNulty and his boss are wearing their jackets since it’s cold but it’s the color blue. Especially the ocean and sky is blue which all of these links to this assignment of being the color blue of the rainbow.

Violet/Purple:

It was funny and surprising how in this episode, I found the color purple with Daniels wearing his tie which is the color purple. I’m pretty sure this is the only time in this episode where purple is being shown. I thought this was a good one to show because Daniels he isn’t that much of a rainbow type of guy. This scene with him wearing purple connects back to part of the assignment with the purple of rainbow.

World of Wires

For my last DS106 assignment this week I decided to do the Visual assignment called The Wire Everywhere, in which we’d have to capture a prevalent image from The Wire and show a real world example.

In Week 1, I recall taking a screenshot of the beginning scene of the episode “The Wire” from Season 1. The scene followed the path of an orange wire suspended between two buildings in The Pit.

After seeing this scene and continuing to watch the show, I found that there are many instances where wires are emphasized, whether through a close-up or through a dynamic scene such as the one above. From the intro theme of the show, I noticed that there is a close-up on a payphone wire.

TheWireintro

The fact that the show is called “The Wire” and that wires are visually represented often in the show makes me think that the wire is a key theme. In saying this I mean that the wire is a symbol for connection and the necessity of new and emerging digital technologies in today’s age–not only for forensics, but for everything. When I plug my cellphone charger into the wall then into my phone, the three technologies are connecting to produce something new–battery life. When I connect my headphones to my iPod then to my ears, sound is produced. So many things are made possible by wires.

To visually represent the importance of wires, I chose the following image of an organized bundle of wires connecting many different technologies:

Bae Bae Baby!

It was all too tempting to do the Visual assignment of Me and Bae! Ha classic! I thought I’d utilize a scene from The Wire, again I utilized FACEinHOLE to upload a scene portraying D’Angelo and Shardene. Then I chose a pic from My bae and I during our anniversary and Wallah its Me and Bae HaaahaaaHeeehahaha, oh and of course I had to put a subtle stamp rep’n my work with the statue of James Farmer located on the campus of UMW placing it’s face in the lower left hand corner.

In the Visual assignment category, I chose to do the Colorize It assignment. I took a photo I had previously taken, and adjusted the colors in the picture.

To change the colors of the pictures, I opened my original image into PixlrĀ and used the Magic Wand tool to select the flower, the leafy background, the middle of the flower, and part of the bee. After I selected each of these parts of the picture, I selected AdjustmentĀ and used the Color Balance scales to decrease the red tones and up the blue and green tones. It was a pretty simple process, but it still had a really cool effect on my picture!

Here’s the original image so you can see the difference.

Rock ā€˜n The Wire

The Wire S2E1 001 The Wire S2E1 039 The Wire S2E1 087

For my third assignment of the week, I decided to take the Rock ‘n Roll ‘n GIF assignment and apply it to the season 2 episode 1 of The Wire. I Ā decided that the bar scene was perfect for this assignment because not only is there a band playing (The Nighthawks) but the crew from the docks were all hanging out together, drinking, and talking about the good old days.

I made these gifs the same way I made the ones for last week’s assignment. I used MPEG Streamclip to trim the video down and export it as images and then used GIMP to open them as layers and save as a gif. I did decide not to do any of the dialogue in this scene because I don’t think it went with the band theme of them listening to music, dancing, and drinking.

Triple Troll Epigraph

From the time I saw this assignment on the Visual page, I knew I had to do it. And then I thought about this quote and I knew it would be perfect because there were so many people who could have said it. I chose the quote from Season 2, Episode 2 when Bunk is talking to Jimmy and he says, “You’re not the run-of-the-mill kind of a$$hole are you, Jimmy? You’re a special kind of a$$hole.” He was talking about how Jimmy keeps pushing cases back onto Rawls when Rawls has already tried to get rid of them. This quote made me laugh when I was watching the show so I knew I had to use it.

I chose Rhonda as the picture because I don’t have any doubt in my mind that that is something that she would say to Jimmy based on their relationship. And I chose Rawls to attribute it to because he would also/has also said almost the exact same thing to Jimmy. And here is the picture:

Rhonda with quote

How I did it:

I used GIMP because I already knew how to put the words onto the picture. I opened up the picture of Rhonda that I got from here as a layer. I’m not sure if I had to do that or not but I knew I was going to be adding other layers onto it (the words) so I went ahead and did it anyway. So I opened up the picture and typed the words on there. Then I merged all of the layers down so that it would be one picture. Then I tried to save it instead of export it, oops, and it reminded me that I couldn’t save it as a .jpg file and that I had to export it to do that. So that was a nice little reminder. Once I did that, it was smooth sailing.

Shameless Plug or Visual Assignment?

Well, I may or may not use this as one of my visual assignments because for one, I kind of feel like I’m copying Groom’s idea, and for two this scene isn’t specific to any of the particular episodes, but it looked fun and I saw something that made me think of The Wire anyway. So, here is the picture that I was going for:

The Wire.jpgĀ (from Wikipedia)

And this is what I saw when I was scrolling through Instagram

alis hokie sign

What, you don’t see it? How about this?

wire small

I’m not exactly sure why I saw it but I did. I logged into Instagram on my computer (weird, I know) and screenshotted the picture. I put it into Microsoft Word and tried to crop in there and then save the image. Well, that didn’t work. It saved the whole screen shot. So I kept those saved files and opened them in Microsoft Office Picture Editor and cropped them there. When I saved them, the zoomed in picture was too small so I had to increase the size to 200% of normal size, but that was easy with the editor. So voila, here is my wire in every day life. Also if you think this sign is cool, which you should, you should visit my friend who made it’s etsy site, she is awesome.

Trolling Quotes

Troll Quote

I decided to do a visual assignment for my third assignment this week. I chose to do a troll quote and confuse some people. I wanted to highlight the notion of ā€œthe gameā€ in the show and did so with this, as every aspect of my troll quote deals with someone in the drug dealing business, so see if you can figure it out!
