Five Frame Story

(3.5 stars)

Below are pictures of my friend and me over the years. This was fun to make because I had to go through some old pictures that bought back good memories. The first picture was when we were one year old and the last picture was over winter break when we were both 22 years old.

Concert You Want To Be At

(2 stars & related to 80’s theme)

This was my first time using any photoshop app and to be honest, it took me a while to figure out. I decided to use Gimp because it was free and what professor Bond suggested. I wanted to relate this assignment to our theme the 80’s, so I photoshopped my face into a picture of Journey at a concert. I do like Journey and would love to go to a concert one day.

I know it is not the best photoshop job but I think it is pretty good for a first time photoshopper!

Just a Splash of Color

Did you know that in Japan (and in some other countries), the sewer covers have unique designs depending what region and city/town you’re in? I encountered this–or at least, actually noticed this–in the summer the weekend before my classes in Japan began. This was en route to the ?magari Fireworks Festival. Sadly, I never stopped to other sewer covers during my study abroad to compare each one, but I’m glad I got even one picture.

Sewer cover in ?magari, Akita, Japan

At the bottom of the cover, it says ???????and?????which means “?magari” and “sewage,” respectively. Since ?magari is well known for its annual fireworks festival, you can see the carvings of the fireworks coming from the top of the mountain. To the left and right are trees, and running along through the center is a bridge, with water running beneath it. The attention to detail and the significance of the images presented here on this cover astounded me. It was too beautiful to not take a picture.

Pondering what to do for my first visual assignment for this week, I stumbled across Colorize It (3 stars), which prompted me to adjust the colors of a picture I had previously taken. I scrolled through my Japan album and came across this picture once again. I wanted to pop some color to this plain sewer color to really represent the explosion of colors that come from the fireworks.

I used the Photoshop Express app on my phone and used the dynamic filter.

The “dynamic” filter on the Photoshop Express app

The filter added hues of blue and green while accenting the yellow from the original picture. It almost makes the cover look as if it sits atop a grassy mountain than concrete while the bright colors pop out like fireworks. Please enjoy this picture of the colorized version!

word cloud

Word Cloud: 2.5 Stars

For this assignment I decided to create a word cloud and used words that related to our 80’s theme. I had to do some research on some slang/catchphrases that were popular in the 80’s (ex. wicked), as well as other popular items such as the Walkman. I used this color scheme for the words because it was the closes I could get to bright, neon colors, something the 80’s is known for.

Capturing the 80s

What am I?

I was purchased off the shelf of a technology store to capture
memories. My main purpose was to ensure the wide tape caught and seized every
live memory in real time.

My on button is pushed, the door is slammed to ensure there
is enough wide tape in the block, I can feel cold hands on both sides since I’m
so bulky. I can fell my zoom buttons being adjusted. And the red button is
pushed.

There. I see the little kids running down the stairs on a
cold morning, running toward the Christmas Tree and asking if Santa came. I can
hear a voice say, “look at me and say Merry Christmas”.

I can feel the cold hands put me back in my bag for safe
keeping and back in the closet until the next memory needs to be captured.

I feel the bag moving from the closet shelf. My on button is
pushed and I see my lens stating 01/01/1981 in white letters. I feel the lens
being adjusted with the zoom in and out button.

There. I see the lady stating, “Happy New Year!” Then another
person waving no with her head shaking and pointing to the next person. Then another
person saying, “Hey, Happy New Year!” There’s a lot of happiness in the room to
capture.

Then I’m put back in the bag for safe keeping until next time.

Crystal’s Olden Days

Crystal’s Past

Crystal was an 80’s teenager girl; some of her struggles
were she was walking everywhere making it hard to be punctual when all her friends
met up at the local video arcade to have fun around all the beeping games and
kids cheering. The video arcade is where Crystal and her friends checked out
all the other local and nearing town boys; too shy to ask any of the boys out, no
cell phone numbers to exchange, too cool since the only hot movie idol back
then was Patrick Swayze and his bad boy moves. Crystal’s teenage image of an 80s
boy was he had to have the moves, have the right change and not play Atari because
that is what her brothers were into and those Atari game consoles were
annoying. They took up the TV, they were noisy, and they took up all your
attention. It was hard for Crystal to grow up in the 80s, she wanted the latest
copy of Thriller from Michael Jackson but she didn’t have a car, she walked
everywhere, her parents had a car but it utilized for work, errands, and gas
was just too much to afford. Growing up in the 80s was hard for Crystal, she
got by by doodling on her drawing pad to layout the next best dress for prom.

Crystal finally graduated high school with all of her other
80s friends. They were set on a path with never ending dreams to be somebody.
To Crystal, she wanted to be happy, to meet someone and get a job so she can
afford the latest acid-washed jeans. She registered for night school at the community
college and started working for the local grocery store. Coming into adulthood
was hard for Crystal; in her eyes, she had real struggles, sharing a car to get
to work and school, not having that one pager to exchange texts, and always
sitting by the house phone to pick up when it rang, just in case the call was for
her.

Crystal managed to get through night school and earned her associate degree. Her next adventure was to enroll at the university in the big city and get her degree in English since she dreamed of being an editor.

Assignment Bank

For the final assignment bank prompt I chose one that ” rite a short inner monologue or narrative from the perspective of a household tool”. It is supposed t be vague but contain enough detail so our reader can guess what it is. Star rating: 4

I see you everyday, listen in on most of your conversations and activities. You all love me but sometimes I’m just not enough for you. The kids are always decorating me with their pictures, stickers, and sometimes even markers. My silver finish is so shiny, especially when you give me a good cleaning, and I never rust. Probably one of more expensive things you bought for this room in the house, but definitely worth the price since I’m the most used.

Changing Fortunes- Assignment Bank #2

The second assignment bank fortune I chose was to go to a fortune cookie generator that would generate a random fortune for you and create a story using that fortune provided. I used the website http://www.myfortunecookie.co.uk for creating a random fortune. The one I received was…

What I am going to do for this story and to relate it to the 80’s theme is to set it in a scene as someone looking at the new creations, inventions, and technologies coming in the near future. I can only imagine that many people were cautious about the new technologies.

I’ve only seen it in catalogs and once at my friends house, but of course her parents are doctors so I’m not surprised they could afford it. Three thousand dollars for this new technology they call a “smart phone”… How could I not be cautious about this I mean the price is a huge factor of it. Of course the newest technology is always appealing but theres no way my parents are going to get one any time soon. I’ve also hears people all over school talking about it and someone said they heard from their parents that its just a way for the government to listen to our conversations. I mean Reagan is a little suspicious sometimes so what if it really is a ploy for the government to listen into our conversations and a little chip is implanted in there. I dont know how to feel about this new smart phone. Going wireless seems pretty cool but I definitely dont want the government listening in my conversations. With that being said, I think I’ll wait a little while to get one before I can actually even afford it but till these rumors are cleared up, I’ll just be super cautious about it.

This had a 3 star difficulty rating

Assignment Bank #1 (week 3)

The first assignment that I chose for this week but wanted to give it an 80’s twist was to write a letter to yourself in 10 years hoping what your job is like, life, and family, and how you see that your life would turn out. I think that this goes good with the 80’s theme because it’s cool to think of how differently people in those years thought about how the future would be. I’m sure they didn’t know about all of the things that would come about in the next decade or they had unrealistic expectations. Below I have a letter that I would have written as a teenager in the 80’s hoping to see how my life would be like in the future. It has a 3 star level of difficulty.

To my future self,

When you read this you will be 28 and in your prime time of life. You’ve experienced your 20’s and I hope it was the best time of your life. I hope that you are in a good job that you actually like. Nothing like your dad’s boring desk job, while it makes money, not the coolest job ever. I hope that you got to go to college at USC and joined the top sorority and were in all the clubs your parents wanted you to be in but also had fun. You took that spring break trip and went to parties and concerts all up and down California. Maybe even meet some stars on the way like Johnny Depp or Rob Lowe. After graduating on the presidents list and having a great time in college hopefully you’ll have some modeling or small role tv offers. Meeting those stars along the way should have paid off in some way. An offer from vogue would have come along by this point and post graduation plans are looking like moving to the big city like I’ve always wanted to and living in that penthouse. You’d be wearing only the best of the best designer clothes, have the biggest and best hair, and partying with the best of the best. Going to the mall and seeing your picture on catalogs. What this period of life brings is fun careless days and living the dream everyone wanted. Now the dating scene, of course a couple movie stars here and there I mean what else are you supposed to do at red carpet events, but the best one will come last at a friends themed party. He was a major football player at Texas during your years and while you’ve heard of him, never a thought about it. One day back at home in your little suburb and town in California you run into him at a record store, you’re both looking at the Madonna Album, you saw her on MTV and fell in love. Small talk here and there and you find out hes a lawyer in Connecticut. You get married and live in a nice community with a pool and green lawns everywhere, the kids can go out and play for hours with the neighborhood kids and ride their bikes forever. Your modeling days are over but that presence never left, so you decide to work with seventeen magazine in their communications department, as you still have a lot of connections. Life has treated you well, you’re married, have a good career, drive that new BMW (with the best CD player and sunroof), and the partying days of college turned out okay as that degree and party life served you well.
