Weekly Assignment #2

For this assignment I also wanted to make it 80’s related and at first I was struggling to think of how to incorporate it. The assignment was to make a gif or street are or graffiti or look up a picture of one. Well when I looked up 80’s graffiti I didnt find much except for one picture of Will Smith and I remembered the intro of Fresh Prince of Bel Air so that is what I decided to include as my gif for this assignment.

Weekly Assignment #1

The first assignment that I chose for this week was one that was combining two images together. I decided to put an 80’s theme twist on this and combined two 80’s prints. I thought that this assignment would go well with the 80’s twist because the first thing that came to mind to blend was either a pattern or one of the trends and then when looking up patterns I really liked these. The website I used to make this was very easy to use and I recommend it for future assignments.

Nothing Says Cheap Like Comic Sans and Helvetica

For my next Visual Assignment, I chose What A Crappy Font Will Do (3.5 stars), and I went with the Cold Stone Creamery logo since this ice cream shop opened in 1988.

Original Cold Stone Creamery logo

I used the photo editor on my phone to white out the original logo, and then using the photo editor on my laptop, I typed “Cold Stone” in all caps in Comic Sans and “Creamery” in Helvetica.

“Cold Stone” in Comic Sans (before putting it in all caps)
“Creamery” in Helvetica

I chose these fonts, particularly the Comic Sans font, because they are notorious for being poor quality, default fonts that you see anywhere and anywhere. They’re a cheap way out of using Times New Roman, but that’s all those two fonts are–cheap. As such, I think using these fonts to represent Cold Stone Creamery makes the shop appear cheap and lacking in quality, the opposite of what I think it is.

The final product

The best picture to exist

This assignment, a relatively easy one, asks you to post your favorite photo and explain why it is so. It is called favorite photo.

This assignment isn’t worth a lot of stars, but I was excited to come across it because I do have a favorite photo that I would love to share with the world.

I know that I talk about my cats a lot and that I may be considered an annoying cat person, but my cats are really my first experiences with a pet and they have an interesting backstory.

I got the black cat (then kitten, Luna) in the beginning of September 2018. She was awesome but was really annoying and needed another friend to play with so I could do my homework.

A few weeks later, we went and got the grey cat (then kitten, Willow) who was labeled aggressive because they believed that she was a feral kitten.

They didn’t get along. Willow would hide, hiss, growl, and swat at Luna. We thought we were going to have to take her back.

A few days later, something clicked and they became best friends. They’ve been this way ever since.

I love this photo because it so accurately displays the personalities of the cat. Luna’s head tilt shows how she’s super outgoing and friendly. Willow is her timid sidekick who will give you tons of love when she wants it, but only when she does.

This was a spur of the moment picture when we saw both of the cats sitting together on the chair. I’m honestly surprised I was able to snap it. Any time that they are sitting together now, when I try to take a picture, they see that I am paying attention to them and move from where they are at so that they could get pet.

When I took the photo, I wasn’t trying to make it a “good” picture because I was so worried that they were going to move. However, I think it turned out well because the cats are posing as if it is a portrait, it is balanced, and their color stands out in the monochrome background.

I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed typing it. This assignment was worth 1.5 stars.

A story through music

I got really excited when I saw this assignment because I love music and I have loved seeing all of the memes online that were done similarly.

For Playlist Poetry, you go onto Windows Media Player or iTunes (I decided to do Spotify since I think this assignment is aged a few years) and try to create a poem or story that is cohesive as possible using song titles.

I wanted to relate this one to the 80’s theme through using only 80’s music.

I thought this one was gonna be easy, but it turned out to be a little more difficult especially having to stick to a certain type of music.

With this, I did the best that I could. It’s not super cohesive, but I think it makes some sense. Maybe it could interpreted artistically because it isn’t smooth flowing.

I tried to make it sound like it was a construction worker who was proud of his hard work and basking in it, only to wake up in the morning and to move on to another project. What do you think?

This wasn’t an assignment that required taking pictures, but when I screenshotted and cropped the image, I tried to make it linear so that it is more visually pleasing.

This assignment was worth three stars.

Beware the Overlook

This assignment, Create a Warning Poster, requires you to make a poster warning someone about something.

I thought this assignment was a good way to help me develop my digital creation skills, so I decided to give it a shot.

I wanted to make this assignment relate to our 80’s theme since there are a lot of “horror” movies from the 80’s that could fit into this poster.

As mentioned in one of my earlier blot posts, I love the Shining (and Stephen King). I also watched Ghostbusters this semester, so I thought it would be kinda funny to combine the both of them.

Ghostbusters has more to do with ridiculous ghosts, but the Shining is a lot more serious with the respect to the supernatural, as you can see when Jack Torrance tries to murder his family.

The poster is a little ridiculous because of how I combined the two contrasting movies, but I had a good time with it.

Check it out!

Although I didn’t use any “photography” skills in this visual assignment, I tried to follow some of the guidelines mentioned, such as keeping it balanced, clear, and incorporating color contrasting.

This assignment was worth 2.5 stars.

The Birdhouse Bunch (We’re the real life Brady bunch -3 stars)

These are my amazing roommates! We have only all lived together since this past June but we all love going on adventures together and just having a blast. For this assignment I actually used Powerpoint as my “editor of choice” because I already had the photos stored in it.

Splash the Color

For this assignment our instructions were to remove all the color from a photo and then restore the color to one object. I decided to use a photo of me in front of a vibrant yellow door because I thought the pop of color from the door would make the contrast more visible. I used photo shop to first lay down a full color image of the photo. I then went in a laid a black and white image perfectly on top of it. I was then able to cut out the door part of the black and white image to have the color part of the door peek through from the color image. I am really happy how it turned out and might even use this photo on my personal instagram to post! Yellow is my favorite color so I like how vibrant it ended up being in contrast with the black and white!

PS: This was a 3.5 star assignment..all done for the week!

Hybird Animal

For this assignment we were instructed to combine two different animals to make some sort of hybrid animal. I decided to go with a cat and a dog. I felt like each of these animals had qualities I liked so why not combine them and make the perfect pet! The name of this animal would be “Cog” (a combo of “dog” and “cat”). They would be super high energy and love being outside. They love being played with but also can cuddle up with you and sleep. They are independent when they need to be but also rely on you. And most importantly, they love you unconditionally. I do have to admit, the picture I photoshopped is a little terrifying…If they were real, I’m sure they would be much cuter!

PS: This was a 2.5 star assignment..3.5 stars to go for the week!

Popstar Out of Place

For this assignment we had to take a picture of a pop star and put them into a location where you wouldn’t usually find them. I decided to stick with our 80s theme and use Freddy Mercury from Queen as my pop star. I then decided to put him at the bottom of the ocean. I had a lot of fun with this assignment because I felt like I had a lot of creative freedom. Plus, I got to use photoshop, which I love. I’m sure the fishes enjoyed the underwater performance!

PS: This was a 3.5 star assignment..5 stars left for the week!
