Week 1 Visual Assignment #2 – My Favorite Lyric

There were many fanart images on my hard drive to pick from to use as a background, and I eventually went with one that I picked up from Danbooru some months back, based on my favorite character in my favorite anime series to date: Akemi Homura from Puella Magi Madoka Magica. I stuck the lyric on using the GIMP editing software, all it took was a pair of text boxes and swapping the color of the text from black to white:

All Gave Some

The lyric – “All gave some, some gave all” – comes from Rise Against’s Survivor Guilt, a song which fits Homura’s character almost perfectly from the first part of the series. She gives quite literally everything she has in her efforts to save a friend, and few recognize her for it until late in the series, when both the viewer and other characters in the cast are given her back story in full. Given my knowledge of the series itself, I can also confidently say that this lyric would fit for ANY of the five main characters – Madoka Magica is a quite brutal deconstruction of the magical girl genre of anime, and the sacrifices made by each of the characters throughout the course of the show reflects the lyric in a number of ways.

I sadly cannot properly attribute the original image with a hyperlink – it is undoubtedly buried somewhere in the several hundred pages of images on Danbooru, and finding it again would be nearly impossible. I just had a local copy saved.

Shine Like the Stars

I chose the My Favorite Lyric assignment where you amplify a lyric that stands out to you by turning it into a visual.  To do this, I added the lyrics to an edited picture that I had saved on Pinterest by adding a text box to the photo in a Word document.  Then I screenshot the finished product to save it as a new picture.

This world can be ugly, but isn’t it beautiful?

This is based off of my favourite lyric, “this world can be ugly, but isn’t it beautiful?”. This lyric comes from a song called “There, There, Katie” by Jack’s Mannequin. This lyric is about finding the beautiful moments in life, even while the bad seems to surround us.

Just heard the song Marry Me by Jason Derulo on the radio while driving. The lyrics were captivating and I had just the photo to pair it with.

From naval gazing to action (or cranking out some mediocre visual assignments)

The weekend was spent in Roanoke, Virginia, where I presented a program on 3D printing at the public library.

I like Roanoke.  It reminds me of Charlottesville, but without all of the pretentiousness.  It’s got good food, good drinks, lovely people, and occasionally banjo-playing buskers will set up on the streets.

My mother-in-law was good enough to watch Jobot over the weekend so that Will and I could kick around town without having to worry about nap schedules.  We caught up with old friends, spent some time in the public library, and had some good beers from the Parkway Brewery.

There wasn’t a lot of time for DS106, which I regret.  There’s always next week.

I did do a handful of daily creates:

So here’s what I’ve learned about myself over the past year:  I am less apt to do and more likely to read/watch/navel gaze.  In other words, I spend more time reading blogs about DS106 and watching videos about DS106 and less time actually doing DS106.  Why?  Doing is hard.  Doing is frustrating.  And doing is usually time consuming.  I’m likely to spend more time naval gazing and thinking over the philosophies of DS106 and maker education, and less time practicing and polishing my skills.  I’ve got a Raspberry Pi and an Arduino kit.  Have I opened them yet?  Nope.  It’s easier to read what other folks are doing with it all.

This is dumb.

Recognizing that action is not my strength–that I’m more of an ideas person–I started in on some visual assignments last night.  Actually, just one visual assignment.

I worked on the “My Favorite Lyric“  visual assignment.  The decided to work with the song, “Tallulah” by Allo Darlin’.

I probably heard it for the first time about a year ago.  There are two lines in the song that I find especially interesting.  I focused on the first of the two:

I’m wondering if I’ve already heard all the songs that’ll mean something
And I’m wondering if I’ve already met all the people that’ll mean something

I don’t feel the same way about music that I did when I was 16 or even 30.  I’m not moved by much.  Maybe it’s because everything sucks.  Most likely it’s because it’s too hard to ferret out the really good stuff.

It’s not especially interesting, nor was it especially hard to do.  But it was practice, and it is a way for me to bookmark this particular song in some physical way.

Never Let Me Go

One of the really cool DS106 assignments that I did was to add one of your favorite lyrics to an image that correlates to the lyric. One of my favorite songs from Florence + the Machine is “Never Let Me Go”, so I found an image that bests reflects this song. They’re several meanings about what the song is actually about, some say suicide, others say being free; whatever it is about I love it so much. Below is the image that I made: favelyric

ds106b – My Favorite Lyric

ds106 assignment b

The assignment was to take a picture that helped describe our favorite lyric and write the lyric somewhere on the picture. The song I chose was Swim by Jack’s Mannequin and I felt this picture helped embody the message of the song as a whole. This song in particular has been one that’s helped me out a lot during times that I felt like things just kept going wrong and weren’t going to get any better. This song represents hope for me during those time, and I feel like the picture shows the same type of loneliness that the song describes. The assignment is listed here and the song is here if anyone feels like listening to it!

It’s a Love Story (My Favourite Lyric Assignment)

Okay, so this assignment was pretty simple. First, I found an image on Google of Mulan and her man. Even though it’s from Mulan 2 (which is god awful, don’t watch it!), I still thought it was the best image I could find. Here it is:

Next, I went on my favourite image editing site, Pixlr, and edited the image on there. All I really did was add in some of my favourite lyrics (can you guess which song I picked?) Here’s the finished product:

Yep, it’s another Taylor Swift song! “Love Story” to be precise (: I guess even to the final week of ds106, T.Swift has stayed strong in my heart <3
