Every Woman Should Have a Purse of Her Own

What's In Your Bag?

Sarah Mustard’s purse contains many items that make her an excellent sleuth. Her car keys and her wallet are first on the list, requirements for her being able to get around both on and off the clock. The next key item would be her sunglasses which could at least partly conceal her identity, but also serves as a way to shield her eyes from the L.A. sun. She has a flashlight in case she needs to creep down any hidden passages at the spur of the moment or search through someone’s bag quickly. She also carries her handy dandy notebook and a pencil with her at all times so that she can quickly write down any sudden inspiration she has or if she needs to write down a license plate. Her last work related item found in her purse is a nice snack (this time goldfish) in case she gets caught out all night and needs quick nourishment.

As far as personal items in Sarah’s purse, Sarah is usually carrying a book, typically a classic. This time it is a Jane Austen novel. She is a big fan of Austen as well as Louisa May Alcott. Sarah also carries her hairbrush with her, because she is a woman after all, and does like looking nice.

I kind of struggled with this assignment, because I had a lot of items I wanted to include which aren’t exactly from the fifties, the time period of my character. I am pretty sure flashlights did not exist then. However, I decided in the end to ignore this and just use my objects from the current time period and try to make them  more symbolic. I chose to approach this prompt thinking about what Sarah would want from her personal life and then also what she should have on her body at all times because of her profession. Her bag is thus a mixture of sweet items that make Sarah herself, but also many of the cold thoughtless items that she must keep with her in order to do her job effectively.

Delilah’s messengerbag

Essentials for Delilah’s life are identified as followed. Her clutch, EOS, gum, collection of lotions, Moroccan Oil for her hair, a bottle of Advil, and her inhaler. Each item has a story. Her clutch was bought for her by her boyfriend on their first vacation, cause she was going over-seas and needed something small and compact. That’s also where her EOS and various lotions came from, when her and her boyfriend had Christmas together, those were the stocking stuffers. The Moroccan Oil came from her best friend who was clearing her room to move to Alaska (she also needs it for her infamously unruly hair). The inhaler she’s needed since she was about 14, when she finally had access to a doctor and was diagnosed with Asthma. She’s basically grown out if it, but that inhaler saved her life a couple of times, so she still keeps it around. The Advil, well when she was going in to get her GED, she had some Advil on her and they confiscated it and almost kicked her off the school premise. She kept bringing it anyways, just hiding it better, and so she got in the habit of always having it on her. It reminds her, in her adult years of her little acts of rebellion as a teenager, and she looks back with fondness. Now for the bag its self. The wife of the man who owned the ranch she worked at, nicknamed Stormy, did a ton of missions work in Africa. Stormy established a library in an underdeveloped town, and had partnered with a local out reach. This out reach started a program that taught the families to make handbags, and various other trinkets, and sell them as a small income, instead of living in and accepting their poverty. Well Stormy got permission to bring back some bags, accessories, and trinkets and sell them in America. The funding’s would be funneled back to the program and families. And that’s Delilah

What’s in the bag?!

 WHAt’s In the bag…?

IMG_6161Sylvia’s bag is pretty simple and doesn’t contain anything too complex. She has perfume to splash on for important interviews, a notebook for her note taking when interviewing subjects for her news articles, and of course, her favorite pen. She carries around her blush and blush brush to apply before meeting new people, she always makes sure to make good impressions. Her sassy red lips aren’t complete without the red gloss she carries with her every where she goes. However, there are two unusual aspects of her items in her purse — the iridescent knife and the bottle of medicine prescribed to someone other than Sylvia.. What could this possibly signify?! Is this a murder weapon? Has she been drugging her victims?

What’s In Your Bag? (3 Stars)

Your purse, bag, backpack, murse, whatever, is your constant companion throughout your adult life. What are the essentials in your bag that get you through the day? Take a picture of the items and detail each of them with a description.

Story Behind the Story:

Instead of using my own purse, I used my character Stella’s purse. In my mind, Stella is a very organized person with few possessions. She only carries what she absolutely needs and doesn’t hassle over digging through her purse trying to find something. I wanted her purse to symbolize her almost “double identity.” By day, psychologist. By night, sociopath. It is quite a shift in personalities, so I really wanted to show that binary opposition.

This assignment shows you how to see a person in a different light then just what is right in front of your face. It also allowed me to work with GIMP again. I think this assignment would be perfect in and english classroom. If you had access to computers and a photoshopping program, this would be extremely beneficial to have students get to know characters in a book. Their assignment could be to pick one character from the book they are currently reading in class and find the different objects that would be found in their bags in order to define what type of person they resemble. It takes the idea of reading to a whole new level; it allows students to create connections with the book while also teaching them a great skill like photoshopping.

Work Itself:

Two phones: Stella claims that the smaller flip phone is used for when her clients call, but no one has ever seen her use it. In reality, it is an unmarked phone in which she uses to carry out all of her wicked plans. The smart phone is her everyday, normal device; she uses it to blend in. If anyone were to get a hold of it, it would hold the run of the mill calls to her husband, her joint e-mail account with her husband, and other daily conventions.

Chapstick/sunglasses: This shows the simplicity of her appearance. She wears no make-up and has piercing green eyes that are sensitive to the sun. Nothing out of the ordinary with these two items; except for that fact that when Stella becomes nervous, she starts to consistently apply her Chapstick. I can’t imagine what would happen if that went missing? She has also noticed that her extreme pale skin, mixed with the piercing green eyes make people nervous and as someone committing multiple crimes, or so we think, she can’t make people fidget unless she is in control. She also sees her eyes as a unique feature that can easily be identified, so whenever she plans a scheme, you will see her sunglasses come out as a defense mechanism.

notepad/wallet combo: As a psychologist, Stella obviously has to take notes during sessions. What her clients don’t know is that she is not only taking notes about their emotions or feelings but additionally, significant details about their everyday life in order to track and manipulate their existence. Just one of her charming characteristics. She as this nice notepad/wallet combo so that no matter where she goes, she always has this notepad with her if she ever needed to reference it. You will NEVER see her without this. Even if she doesn’t have a purse with her, that wallet/notepad is glued to her hand. It never leaves her site. When the notepad runs out, she locks away in a safe with all of the other ones.

ring of keys: Which brings us to her extensive ring of keys. While her appearance can be a little intimidating, it sometimes proves the opposite effect. She has a knack for being charming when she wants something from someone. Hence how she got all of the keys now attached to her ring. Some are keys of clients homes, others are keys to doctors offices. There are even a couple that unlock storage units spread out all across the city. The big kicker is the key to her other home. That’s right. She lives with her husband in a nice suburban home, but she also has a hidden away apartment just for her. No one has ever been in it. No one knows it exists. She uses these keys when she has had enough fun with her clients and wishes to see them squirm.

multiple blank IDs: Finally, a stack of blank IDs. She can be whoever she wants, whenever she wants. She is the ultimate manipulator. If she needs to pretend to be running an investigation and access one of her clients files, she does it. If she wants to get into a safety deposit box, she does it. If she wants to act as a family visitor at the hospital, she does it. Maybe her real name isn’t even Stella?

Narrate the Process:

I am not going to lie, I used a little Veronica Mars inspiration for this assignment (in case you couldn’t tell by now, I have an unhealthy obsession with that show). I just twisted the peppy, witty Veronica into a deceptive, scary Stella. The multiple IDs and the set of keys were the main drive for this assignment. Someone who can get away with manipulating minds for years doesn’t seem like someone who would leave a lot of traces of that lifestyle in his/her purse. I wanted it neat and compact with an edge of curiosity.

Once again, I used GIMP. I found all of the pictures on Google and then dragged them into the application as different layers. However, I did not become this tech savvy on my own. The lovely tutors at UMW’s Digital Knowledge Center have probably seen enough of me by now. I started with the purse. In order to do this, I hid all of the other images by clicking on the little eye that appears next to them in the sidebar. Once I had cut the background out by using the wand, selecting the white space and then cutting, I proceeded to do the same for each item. I shrunk and rotated them to make it as scale as possible. (honestly if you had asked me about this process a week ago, I would have just stared at you, I am not even sure if what I have written now makes sense, but I am getting there!)

Out of Cat’s Bag

SImple things that explain a whole lot about the mystery of Caterina Loveless … and boy, is there SO much more to this story :)

Out of Cat’s Bag

One of the three visual assignments for this week (this one being three stars) was to think of the essential items that our noir character would carry in their bag, and more importantly carry with them throughout the day-to-day activities of their lives. So how ’bout we let the Cat out of the bag in an effort to try to get to know the real her? Which she doesn’t often let a lot of people do, but luckily you’ve got me to give you the inside scoop ;).

To start off, this is Cat’s actual bag. A simple, medium sized two-toned satchel. Just like how its tan and white on the outside, it mirrors how Cat appears black and white to most people, but there’s a lot more “gray-ish” details to be found on the inside.

Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 11.54.58 AM

The first on her list of must have possessions is the leather-bound journal. Without the two most important men in her life, she seldom feels confident in confiding in anyone else and thus utilizes this journal as she attempts to figure out her twisted-around-pineapple-upside-down life. She also keeps it as a daily log for her activities outside of her day-job-in-the-evening, which you, the reader, will discover as her story develops throughout the course. It is no coincidence that a decorative key lies on the outside of it, as Cat rarely lets people in, keeping most of her thoughts and quite frankly her life locked away.

Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 11.53.30 AM

Next is a small bejeweled lipstick case. It doesn’t just pack a punch of color that makes the boys turn as savage as bulls when they see the red but it also has a protective quality to it that aids in her protecting against the dangers that come with the other side of her life. Again, no spoilers quite yet …

Also in the bag is a gold chained necklace with an arrow charm on it, given to her by her father on that fateful day she met Beau … the day that, unbeknownst to her, her father was most proud of his daughter. Cat only wears it on the most special of occasions.

il_570xN.287123795

Speaking of Beau, Cat also keeps reminders of her dear friend always with her. She tucks the most recent of his postcards, which are few and far between, away into the side pocket, along with a Polaroid of him that her dad candidly snapped on their prom night at that exact moment he saw her (One of Wally’s favorite past times was photography, and this photo is particularly special since it reminds Cat of both of the two most important men in her life). Any emotions she ever almost-experienced as she and Beau grew older and closer are kept zipped up tight, locked away and out of sight; but perhaps one day, if Beau returns home, they’ll get to begin again from all those unanswered “what ifs” of the past.

Married to the Mob.

Vinny D's Bag

If you were to approach Vinny D and ask him, “What’s in Your Bag?“, it might be the last questions you ever ask.  Or you may get an honest answer.  Either way, it should come as no surprise that Vinny keeps things simple.  He doesn’t carry a bag; what kind of man would that make him?  All of his mobster buddies would lose all respect for him.  Until of course, he earned it back!

His favorite snub nose pistol, a knife, pen, lighter, cash, keys and his lucky poker chip are the contents of this man’s pockets. These are just a few pieces of Vinny’s favorite things in life; money, , guns, cash and cars.

Keys: Vinny always has his keys.  I mean, you never know when he is going to need to flee the scene or get out of town.  You won’t see Vin in anything but luxury.

Poker Chip: This lucky poker chip goes everywhere with Vinny.  He won this as his first chip at a Japanese-owned casino and has carried it everywhere with him ever since.  He swears up and down that this thing has saved his life numerous times.  He coined it his “Lucky” poker chip after he was shot and survived.

Lighter: Vincenzo DeMartino should own stock in cigars because he smokes so many.  Any time of day, any day of the week, a fine cigar will be hanging out of his mouth.  And he doesn’t borrow lighters like the rest of us.  You never know how or when someone could be setting him up.

Wallet: Vinny always has cash.  He always says, “money talks”. No man, especially not a high up mobster like Vin, can talk something this big and not live it.  If you bet money with Vinny D, you better have a pocket full.

Pen: Vinny’s favorite pen is for signing big deals.  Much like his lighter, he only uses his own.

Gun: Vin’s famous snub nose is what earned him his nickname, Vinny D.  His best buddy Leo calls him “Vinny D Monsta” because he never hesitates to bust a cap in someone for crossing him or the mob over.  He always has his piece, and he prefers the snub nose because it is easier to conceal.

Knife: The knife is back up.  If Vinny runs out of ammo or somehow loses track of his gun, he always has a spare weapon so he can spare his life.

Vinny D doesn’t mess around.  The daily contents of his pocket are meaningful and to the point.

What’s In Your Bag George?

What's In Your Bag George!
What’s In Your Bag George!

Ah, George being a male always keeps things simple. He of course doesn’t carry a bag but keeps everything he needs in his trench coat pockets – inside and out that is.

Cash always a lot of cash because you never know when you’ll need it.

Comb in order to keep the hair in place and out of his face.

Pen just in case he needs to sign something or maybe you will need to be signing something from him! Protection anyone? He’ll provide you the protection you need for just a little cash each week!

His ring is never kept on his finger except when he is home by his wife. This is for many purposes – first you don’t want anything in your way or getting caught on anything which could cost you your life. Second you never know who you meet and how well you might want to get to know that dame and he just couldn’t take a chance of her knowing he is married!

And then there is the pocket (and I’m not telling on him or pointing this out) some things just don’t come out until it is necessary and then POW it’s all over but they crying! And George doesn’t like hearing that!!

Each of these items were chosen because he simply needs them in his line of business. You just never know what may come up and you have to be ready at all times.
