That’s Not What I Expected

The prompt

The photo:

Close-Up

The prompt says you should guess what it is, so write in the comments what you think it is and then come back. There’s a photo of what this is in full further down but just ignore it. Scroll fast. You did it? You’re back? Good.

This is a closeup of a paint-by-number I finished last night. I shot from the very bottom of the painting where it as hanging on my wall and pointed straight up. The full painting is of a busy cafe at night. I spent weeks working on painting it so I’m really proud of it now that it’s done and I wanted to show it off. Also, it made a neat closeup. I didn’t crop it or anything, I left all the clues there. I think it’s fairly easy to guess that it’s a painting of some kind, but it’s more difficult to guess what it could be a painting of, especially because the colors aren’t particularly realistic. I also ignored some of the lines and color suggestions and made it my own a bit. Bob Ross would be proud that I made it my own world. Here it is in its entirety:

The Paint-By-Number I did

Please Tell Me What This Is!

What Is This?

For Visual Assignments 1882 “That’s Not What I Expected”, I not only took a close-up photo but then cropped it more closely to take away a lot of clues for you. But there are clues and I think, still too many. Regardless, this is my favorite theme in photography and what gives me the greatest JOY (Bob Ross would be happy with this photo theme). I think nature always takes the path of least resistance, and fills in where there is either a void or balances when there is abundance. Look at this perfect color yellow–is it to attract or to warn? I have no clue but it sure stood out when I was looking for subjects to photograph that day.

For this assignment, I purposefully cropped everything out except the most critical pieces that would give you the information to identify what this is. But the cropping is what took the most time because I wasn’t sure where to stop. This is the real bugger with photo editing–when is the piece finished?? For this one, at first I did some lighting and color editing then decided to undo everything because it wasn’t necessary. The original was beautiful on its own. If I were looking at the original to frame, I would not blow it up quite so large but I’m impressed what an iPhone can do! The resolution on this image and color saturation are quite amazing. I’d like to talk more about taking this photo, but that may give away the subject. I have kept the original photo and plan to update this post with the original after a few guesses, so please comment! Then we can talk.

Can you guess it?

It was King.

He’s my little skeleton friend.

Do not worry, these pictures are posted with his written consent.

Lesson learned: Look inside things, when you are allowed, and try to get your eyes working differently.

Something Unexpected

This evening I found myself wandering around looking at everything I passed by wondering how each object might look super close up. I was trying to find just the right object (or animal, but my dog’s a bit squirmy) to take a very close-up photo which could trick an audience.

This ds106 assignment was fun to ponder and I still don’t know that I chose the right thing for my subject, but I liked it anyway.

The most difficult part of this 3 star assignment was getting the camera (aka phone) to stop shaking while my hands hovered above the object. I got a few blurry photos until I realized I could steady my wrist against a nearby wall. Finally! I got a photo, but how difficult would it be for someone else to accurately guess what it was of?

You tell me.

I decided to crop it down a bit further and used Photoshop to change the image to black and white. I’m hoping the color change makes this a slightly trickier image than when it was in full color.

Whether mine is the easiest to guess or not, this was an interesting way to view the room around me. If nothing else, I have a new visual appreciation for the subject of my photo.

Guess the zoomed-in photograph:

That’s Not What I Expected

This prompt involved taking a picture of an item from a strange angle or just really stinking close, to see if people can guess what it is. This is my final Visual Assignment of the week and I am not going to lie, I’m at work (don’t tell my boss) so I was at the mercy of office related items. I roamed around a little, took some picture but then this small. shiny, and reflective item caught my attention. Can you guess what it might be?

Can You Guess What It is- 80’s addition (That’s Not What I Expected- 3 stars)

Can you guess what it is? Leave me a comment guessing what it is and I’ll let you know if you’re correct. Think 80’s! For this I had an extremely hard time focusing my camera and actually found it more beneficial to use Snapchat and do it from there.

What am I?

For this week’s first assignment, I decided to do something that I thought seemed like fun. Maybe it’s too easy or too hard, but I thought it would be worth a shot.

This assignment is called “That’s Not What I Expected,” where the purpose is to take a picture of something zoomed in and try to get people to guess what it is.

I wanted to try this one out because it would allow me to use a bit of the photography info that we have been studying this week.

For my picture, I decided to zoom in on this household item. When taking the picture, I thought about the perspective (what may make it look not like itself?), lighting, balance (the kind-of symmetry), and contrast.

I took some other pictures that I was interested in posting instead, but I really liked the last one I took, which is the one embedded in this blog. I think the color is beautiful and it contrasts well with the black. It was a spontaneous photo, which I think fits this assignment and theme this week best.

So, can you guess what it is?

Let me know! I think its do-able!

This assignment is worth 3 stars.

Guess! That! Object!!!

Directions – ” Take a close up picture of something as see if people can guess what it is. Try doing the skin or outside of something that would make it hard for someone to guess!

Behind the Story: Due to this week’s theme I was able to use my camera a lot. I learned quite a bit about its capabilities as well as different ways to take a picture. This assignment required taking a macro-shot of an object and seeing if viewers could guess what it is.

You can find the answer on my twitter at this link

Narrating the Process: For this assignment I used my Sony Cybershot with 7.2 megapixels. In total honesty I do not know how that affects the images I take. The camera I have been using was made around 2006. Compared to my mom’s camera that I have used for a few assignments, the level of quality is like night and day. Getting this shot was difficult. Not only was it difficult to get proper lighting for the photo, but if the camera zoomed in too far then it would fail to auto focus on the subject. I chose this object because I figured it might throw some people off. This assignment definitely made me think about what I was taking a picture of and what level of zoom and lighting would capture the best image.

That’s Not What I Expected

Try to guess what this extreme close up is depicting. I will be nice and offer some clues!

What am I? I am small and square like. I can fit into the palm of your hand. You can turn me back and forth. Up and down. Left and right. Clockwise and counterclockwise. But be warned, as you turn me my colors will begin to mix and match. Although, some people out there know the specific way to turn me, to get all my colors to match on the same sides. Have you figured it out???

I AM A RUBIK’S CUBE!!! Just because the Rubik’s Cube was most popular in the 1980s, doesn’t mean it can’t be popular right now in this century!

I chose the Rubik’s Cube as the object to that you wouldn’t expect because this past summer I learned how to solve one of these 80s relics! I felt so accomplished when I attained the ability to solve the cube. It took a full week of learning algorithm after algorithm, to be able to solve that cube. And now I can solve it while having a full-on conversation with someone! My fastest time recorded is 1 minute and 8 seconds!
