A Dark Reflection

Decorative Image

Be on the lookout for this sign. It marks the entranceway to the Shadow Fredericksburg. There everything is reversed. Ross Bob angrily photographs large unhappy bushes. You might find yourself in an analog nonfiction writing class. You may even find yourself attending courses at WMU instead of UMW. Everything in Shadow Fredericksburg isn’t bad, but it can be near impossible for newcomers to find their feet and the royam of the land doesn’t take happily to those who don’t understand the customs. So best (or should I say worst) of luck to those who stumble out of our dimension and into that one.

For the assignment, Shadow of a Doubt, I had to take a picture featuring a shadow and tell a story with my picture. It was worth 2.5 stars.

Shadow of a Doubt

For this assignment, for 2.5 stars, I had to take a picture with shadows adding to the picture. I decided to take to my backyard, and found a lot of interesting shadows made by leaves. For my picture, I chose a singular branch because it had the most light shining through it. The shadows in this picture cast by the leaves, emphasize the contrast made and makes the light the central focus of this photo. I really like the way it turned out and it made me experiment with different lightings and angles to get it where I wanted.

Shadow of a Doubt

2.5 Stars

I took two photos dealing with shadows. They are of the same tree, but at different times. This first photo was taken around 4 pm. The second at about 6 pm. In the first photo, the tree has a mixture of light and dark. The leaves are all accentuated and create a mirror image in the light and dark.

In the second photo, the tree is entirely in the shadows. The dark has taken control. But, with the dawn brings new possibilities. The sun will take control. But it is always interesting to know, there is always dark attached to light. To me this means that there will always be dark times, but you have to look for the light.

It was interesting actually paying attention to shadows for this assignment. Often times I just notice a shadow and move on without taking time to think deeper. It was really nice taking several minutes to reflect on shadows and how they interact with a subject.

Who’s there?

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, I found someone in my room when I came back from class. I walked in my door and there was this figure on the wall near my desk that just stood there. I had no idea what could have caused it so I quickly took out my phone and took a pic, I was able to edit it a little with my phone making it black and white so I could see the figure clearer and change the contrast so I could see the outline better. I decided to add the breaking news because this is the fist time something like this has happened to me so that was an artistic addition. I had no idea what this thing could be in my room when it was locked on campus. Then I remembered and old story I heard about one of the dorms that there was a ghost there and sometimes people would see or hear things that they couldn’t explain so they would just blame the ghost. I am thinking did the ghost come back to haunt my room now???

For this assignment I needed to create a shadow using light and develop a story from it. I opened my curtains to let the natural light in and saw a shadow of myself on the wall that looked good. I edited the photo a little more to get the outline of the shadow down and uploaded it to youtube because I added the breaking news 3D moving piece that made the photo no longer a JPG.

I enjoyed this assignment because I was able to get create and play with the lighting around me while still using my body as the main prop. This assignment was worth 2.5 stars. I like the way this shadow turned out and I am proud of this image I was able to capture. The inspiration did come from hearing ghost stories in my time here about the campus, and I thought how much fun I could have incorporating that in my story about this shadow.

Flowery shadows.

This is the original link to the assignment. I was told to focus on the shadow as the main subject. Also, how the lines are defined between the shadow and the light. This is a photo off my front porch where the sunset is setting soon, giving this shadow a long narrow view from the actually object giving off the shadow. This vase of flowers are very colorful and give off a sense of happiness. When you look at the shadow, I have a sense of peace. Peaceful is what I feel when I look at the shadow. The black shadow gives a sense of curiousness, because you can tell the shadow is made from flowers, but all you wonder is what color the flowers are that are giving off the black shadow. This assignment was interesting and made me think really hard about how this image speaks to me, or how the image speaks.

Shadow of a Doubt

You hear a creak down the hallway in the middle of the night. You’re in bed and sit up, trying to decide if it is worth it to check out the disturbance. You listen, and hear nothing, so you decide to lie back down. Just as you go to close your eyes and fall back asleep, you hear another creak, except, now, it is closer to your bedroom. You get up, put on your robe and slippers, and head quietly towards the door. You’re right next to the door when you see what appears to be the shadow of feet right on the other side of the door. The only problem is- you live alone. You swallow, and decide to you have to see who- or what- it is.

You reach for the lightswitch…

For this assignment we had to find a shadow and make it the subject of our picture, as well as give it a story! While I usually like to take fun and silly pictures, I decided to take a creepier turn with this photo as I absolutely loved the effect it gave!

As far as editing the photo itself, I just added more contrast and, of course, set it to black and white all on my iPhone 6 picture editing. A very simple- yet effective- way to give an ominous and looming feel!

Hope you liked it!

Shadows

We were driving through Washington state when I took this photo. It was the golden hour for photography and the trees looked amazing.

The shadows cast by the set of trees to the right ended up making the forest on the left look as if it had two sets of trees, one short and one tall. I love this photo as it shows how, in the evening, you can be tired, but the world and sun are as well. They start to make things seem there that are not. It gives the sense that everyone and everything waxes or wanes.

The photo also feels a bit eery to me. Because the lighting was slightly orange and the dark of night was arriving, I felt that maybe wolves or vampire would come out. The lighting was a warning…

My Shadow of a Doubt

Behind the Scenes

It’s such a simple photo, but you can pick up on the main narrative: the strength of a bond. The shadows make contact shoulder-to-shoulder, you can guess one is female and one is male, and the shadows are displayed over a brick canvas – symbolic for solidity or strength. You can tell this is a small glimpse at a romance, or perhaps a very strong friendship.

The shadows relieve the subjects of most of their identity, and let the viewer project any persons onto those who own the shadows.
