What every entomologist needs…

an awkward ladybug costume.

BUG

An assignment to create another Three Wolf Moon shirt? Really? I’m getting GRADED for this? My life could only get better if I’d started my work on Monday like a sane, sensible human being.

I was excitation to give this assignment a try, although initially I wasn’t certain I’d be able to capture the essence of the glorious Three Wolf Moon reviews. There’s something about that sort of spontaneous moment of communal absurdity that’s difficult to recreate, and generally results in a terrible forced meme that never gets off the ground. The stuff that makes great memes great is, in part, their unpredictability, and how organically they arise from the depths of internet subculture.

However, in attempting to find something weird and different to review on Amazon, I found that the majority of obscure items (like unicorn meat, wolf urine and real uranium) already had a plethora of silly reviews attached to them; apparently the three wolf moon shirt spawned not only that one meme, but an entire tradition of leaving ridiculous reviews on odd products. In a similar vein, the mundane items I looked at mostly had at least a few real reviews already, meaning my review would hardly stand out.

At last, I found it. A Halloween costume so dumb and awkward that itneededa stupid review. In keeping with many of the story-reviews I’d read as I trawled through the weird underbelly of Amazon.com, I went with a hyper-serious tone, and even went so far as to use the persona of a scientist to really make the point. The trope of the crazy scientist living with the animals they’re studying is a well-known one, so I had a lot to work with in terms of cultural background. While my review hasn’t generated any other reviews in kind, I have a second review! And possibly a third later on! And folks are seeing it—as of writing this, 11 out of 12 OVER FORTY people found it “helpful.” Granted, that might be due to the fact that it is absolutely because I advertised what I was doing on a knitting forum I frequent that’s full of weird, awesome people who appreciate this kind of thing and who were willing to jump in and help me out (it’s not cheating, it’s generating traffic!).

In case you don’t want to head over to Amazon to view my story in all its absurdity, here’s the text of my review:

Excellent for research! Entomologist approved October 28, 2012

By H
As an entomologist specializing in Coccinellidae, I have been searching for a suitable disguise that would help me conduct up close research on new species of lady beetle that I have discovered. They are a fascinating breed, having established a colony that is similar in structure and function to that of a beehive a termite mound. I had purchased an inferior costume for my first attempt at studying this colony, and the results were unpleasant; apparently able to detect the faults in my disguise, the lady beetles swarmed and began to gnaw on my face. After a brief recovery period, however, I was determined to find a better costume and try again. This costume proved nearly faultless, and has served my needs admirably. I had to sew on an extra pair of legs and supply my own black unitard beneath the ensemble to complete the look, as well as modifying the wings so they sat beneath its outer shell, but otherwise its sturdy construction bright coloration, perfectly mimicking the iconic red elytra of the Coccinellidae, were just what I needed. I chose this costume over the others advertised on this website because the spots it boasts are more proportional to the garment’s overall size; others I looked into tended to present in a smaller polka dot pattern, which may have been the fatal flaw in my first disguise.I write this now from the outer limits of the Coccinellidae colony. They have accepted me into their ranks, and I have begun living as they do, setting out each morning before dawn to collect aphids and other scale insects for more sedentary colony members. Their behavior is utterly unprecedented, and seems almost intelligent. Soon I hope to catch a glimpse of the center of their colony, possibly a queen-beetle of some sort. I live in hope, and all thanks to this excellent costume.

Someday

For the Storify It assignment I chose to retell Snow White in my own way. Skin as white as snow, hair as dark as night, and lips as red as rose and so forth and so on. Storify made it very convenient to find media from several social media sites to create my story I had made a different story originally was was very basic, but after I got the hang of using Storify I went back and tried to create a more complex story.

Summarization #9

  • The evaluations of The Despicables and Road Trip Radio were actually kind of interesting to do. The criteria really made me focus on how the actual show was put together rather than just the story. I don’t know that if some of the criteria (transitions, effects) weren’t mentioned to me if I would have recognized them on my own.

  • I really enjoyed the web assignments. However, I felt that the choices were very limited. I had a few rough patches with some of the assignments. But, I did  find two that were fun and I could accomplish well. One of my favorite assignments of the class was in this section. The google web adventure assignment was very intriguing to me.

Back in time: 2 stars

A Web Adventure: 3 Stars

  • For the daily creates this week we had to link them in a story. I briefly had the story in the links between the photos/sounds. But this is the real story…. As I was walking through my squeaky apartment,

frustrated and overwhelmed with work, I came across a dollar bill.

dollar bill

I looked at the back and saw the pyramids and pondered about their significance for a while. As I was think, I thought I needed a vacation. I decided that this dollar bill  was going to be used for a trip to the beach to see the shells and the ocean.

Rocks?

The other day I found the Harry Potter Original Sorting Hat! I suppose Wizarding World forgot to spell protect this item from muggles. Now, for the first time every muggles get a sneak peak in the Magic Amazon. Fans of Harry Potter will be excited to know that the Sorting Hat is real and, therefore, so is the Wizarding World! Not only will it sort you into your house  by reading your heart, it can conjure the Gyrffindor sword, and it can sort household items like socks. Mrs. Weasley would love this product, think of all the socks she has to sort through (plus they all look a like).

This was a mentally daunting task. However, the “x-ray goggles” is really easy to use and it ended up being extremely fun.  With x-ray goggles, you simply just click and edit. When you are done, you click “p” . Select the html source code, then in your blog domain home page, click file manager.  Create a new html file, copy over the source code, and you are done. It was fun trying to create something only through alteration.

Web Assignment #2

For assignment number 2, I did this one. The Way Back Time Machine is absolutely fascinating. I looked at history.com, because it was the first thing that came to my mind.

history.com-3

This is the first image, from 1996. I took a screenshot with jing and uploaded it to flickr. It’s pretty cool, because it seems to be more of an archive rather than the sensationalized thing it is today. Also, the resolution looks like it didn’t adjust (which annoys me). The colors are also horrendous.

history.com

This one, from 2004, is an interesting one. It appears that the history.com briefly changed the url to historychannel.com, which would be more accurate anyway, since their archive is not especially history-ized. Also, the big red space to the side bothers me a little, but the color is a little better.

history.com-2

This image is from present day. Here it is clear that the history channel has done some serious reworking of the concept of history and has become more like TLC with the entertainment aspect. Swamp People and Pawn Stars sure are entertaining, but are they really deserving of the url history.com? Also, the site sensationalizes itself now, but if you were to type in an actual historical event, they misinterpret it and are usually a bad source.

My story through Google Maps

The purpose of this web assignment was to use Google Maps to tell a story of historical or literary figure. this  was a 3 star assignment as well .

For this reason I chose to talk about two significant  places of Afghanistan Bamiyan and Ghur. I used Wikipedia to get historical information about both Bamiyan valley and Ghur province. I then used Google maps to manipulate the significance of those places. I really enjoyed creating this assignment and I found Google Maps very easy to use.

Bamiyan valley which is one of the ancient provinces of Afghanistan was a Buddhist religious site from the 2nd century up until Afghans converted to Islam and abandoned Buddhism. The valley was dominated by hundreds of Buddhists caves and was occupied by some 5000 Buddhist monks. Bamiyan valley was adorned by two giant statues of Buddha Curved into the side of a cliff in the valley. The statues were 180 and 121 feet high respectively; both of the statues were 1500 years old.

Similarly, the other historical place is Jam Minaret a 65 m tall structure that is bounded by 2.4 km mountains which lies near with two rivers. Jam Minaret is located in one of historical provinces of Afghanistan Ghur.

I chose to talk about these two historical places, because I have always wished to visit these places but I couldn’t; mainly because of the security issues. It is my hope that one day I would be able to visit these places

Gandhi in Social Media

The purpose of this assignment was to use the Fakebook tool to make a Facebook profile for a historical figure and make a fake tweet for the same character using the Twister tool.

Thus, I chose Mahatma Gandhi, because I believe he is a great symbol of peace and unity. I used Wikipedia and some of his quotes.

Then I took the screen shots of both the Fakebook and the Twister created for Mahatma Gandhi with the Jingo.

I believe if the social media existed for Mahatma Gandhi he could approach more people with his message of peace and unity.

Amazon has a new real housewives franchise…

Amazon’s new real housewives.

Yes, I did it. I transformed my guilty pleasure show into a ds106 affair. I used hackasaurus which made it super easy to do. I simply put the X-Ray goggles into my bookmarks bar and went to the page I wanted to edit. I clicked x-ray goggles and voila! I could edit all the text and images I wanted, so I did. I clicked P when I was done, and copied the code it spit out. I put this code into notepad, like cogdog suggested. I saved it as an html file, which worked the second time (ok, maybe third time) I tried it. I hadn’t put notepad into unicode, so it’s understandable. Then I uploaded the file to wordpress by clicking the cool camera imposed on a musical note button at the top of posts page. Yeah, and it works! woohoo! go me! (my first attempt was awful so I deleted it.)

I thought it would be fun to insert ds106 things into a real housewives scenario. I used Martha and Cogdog as the main characters, all in good fun! I think there is also a little mention of DTLT and maybe my friend Kendall! I love the real housewives and I love ds106. I tried to insert 106 into the writing as much as possible. Hence the seemingly random 06 but it does usually follow after a 1!

A story embedded in a page

When I started to read this week’s assignment of redesigning a webpage to tell a story, I at first thought it meant embedding a story within an existing webpage. And I got REALLY excited. This seemed like such a cool idea – the story could be relevant to the page content, or a complete non sequitur.

But then I continued reading, and realized the assignment meant something more like this. Which, don’t get me wrong, was a lot of fun. But I was still excited by my initial interpretation. So I decided to go ahead and do it and submit this as an assignment proposal.

I took the non sequitur approach, writing a story embedded in Google Apps integration documentation. (I wanted to use something long to accommodate the story structure and inherently uninteresting to most people so that they wouldn’t be distracted by it.) The story began with the idea of someone crying out for help, and then it went off in its own … surprising direction.

The poem is one that I wrote back in high school, with the enticing description of “Crappy poem I wrote while bored and procrastinating on homework.” I honestly do not remember what inspired it, but in rereading it I found the mawkishness and the self-importance to be so entertaining that I decided to use it here. (I used to write a lot of humorous poetry, and initially wanted to use one of those poems, but then I came across this one, and immediately knew I had to use it. Because it gave me my ending.)

Here is a pdf version of the story, or you can download the webpage here.

UPDATE: Assignment has been submitted! http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/hidden-story-in-a-page/ Hope you enjoy it. I had fun creating the thumbnail for the assignment page:
