Dream Vacation

For one of my chosen assignments for this week, I chose to do the Create Your Dream Vacation on Pinterest Assignment because, why the heck not?!

Follow Sara’s board Dream Vacation for DS106 on Pinterest.

It goes without saying that New Zealand is the number one place I’d go to if I could go anywhere in the world. New Zealand has some of the most beautiful scenery, if not the most beautiful scenery on Earth, as well as some beautiful weather and friendly people. I definitely think this trip would be possible someday if I save up enough money. I’m usually bad with saving money, but this is something I’m truly passionate about and an opportunity I can’t imagine missing out on. For this to come true, I first need to find a travel buddy. I traveled alone when I went to Edinburgh, Scotland for four months, didn’t know anyone when I landed and was terrified. If I had someone go along with me, I’d feel much safer and much more certain that I’d have a great time. It would also be helpful to have someone help me save money. I’d also have to find places to stay, to see which island I’d rather stay on, how much time I’d need to free up for all the things we wanted to do, the best way to travel between islands, how much public transportation and food would cost, and how long I’d want to stay there (short vacation or live there for a year and get a job). I don’t believe there’s another language spoken in New Zealand, although they do have different terminology than that which I’m used to, so I’d have to familiarize myself with their accents and phrases.

Can’t wait for this to happen someday!

My Dream Vacation

When thinking of my dream vacations my mind instantly goes to food. Everyplace on my bucket list has glorious food with a unique spice Platte. Growing up, my best friend was Greek. I would go over to her home after school or on weekends and be surrounded by many of her family members, mass amounts of food, and religious culture as well. Seeing her and her family and the things that made them special made me want to see where they came from.

Greece became my ideal country for a vacation. Greece is as rich in history as it is in food. In a perfect world I would take at least two weeks and just lose myself in Greece. I would start of course in Athens; while there I would visit the Parthenon, the Acropolis of Athens and their newest Museum that allows you to see into an excavation site. I would want to see the temples of Zeus (image) and Hephaestus (image), and the other remaining temples of the Greek gods and goddesses. I want to see with my eyes all places I have read about and learned about in my past courses, and reading I completed just for my personal pleasure. I would then travel to the island of Mykonos and Santorini and see their crystal blue waters and the magnificent architecture old and new. I would travel through each island and eat my way from one to the other. Visit the beaches and caverns, Kayak through the waters, and watch the sunset.

There is so much beauty to withhold in Greece, and the contrast between the ancient world and current times makes it all the more fascinating. For me this trip is 100% possible. I would have to save up for two or three years to ensure I would get to do everything I would want to see but in the long run that is not a long time to see a place you will remember for the rest of your life.

Visiting Greece does not require any shots but I would need a tetanus shot before I went just so I would be up to date on them. I would see up a medicial kit for myself for an accidents that could occur, or to prevent any pain from food that I might not be used to. I have flown many times and the high altitude does not bother me so I would not need the medication helping with altitude sickness. I would need to get a passport before I would be able to leave the country but if I purchased a blue tourist passport I would not need a visa and I could stay up to 90 days.

If I were to fly to Greece at the end of May to June flight tickets would vary but the O+B hotel in Athens would be about $174, with it being within walking distance from the Parthenon, dining, and shopping it would not be outrageous as far as hotels go. Pezoules hotel in Santorini which would be my first choice hotel would only be $70 dollars a night and it possess a breath taking view. For Mykonos I would choose the Vencia hotel, if I booked through booking.com it would be around $180. Both of the island hotels overlook the ocean, and the towns they are in, and the both possess a charming demeanor. I would not be in my room for very long like most vacations, but they would be a refreshing place to come back to and the end of the day.

The Assignment

Dream VaCay -3 stars

I just had to do this assignment when I saw it! I have always wanted to go to Ireland, mostly because I am mostly Irish as far as my heritage. Also I know the landscape all over is amazing and even though it rains a lot during certain times of the year (summer for the most part) it seems like such a beautiful place to visit! Oh, and I love pinterest!! So here is my board for Ireland! This is a very possible trip one day for me and my mom to take, we have been looking at trying to take it ever since I was old enough to remember traveling to different places. The money is going to be the major thing to save up and have not only for travel expenses and/or if we decide to pay to go along with a group tour type thing, but also to buy mementos from the trip. We will be waiting until I am 21, even though the legal drinking age is 18. One place I really want to see is Dublin, not only because the Guinness Storehouse is there, but also for the famous soda bread and to visit the landmarks like the Dublin Castle. The Brazen Head (its a pub) is also in Dublin and is the oldest pub in Ireland dating back to 1198! It is nice because we do not have to learn a different language, even though there will be a definite accent and some words may be different than what we are used to. We have our passports which would be another requirement. There are no vaccines or anything that we would need in order to travel there or anything special that we would need. I am so ready to go explore Ireland!

Iceland 2014, Here I Come

For my first web assignment, I chose to do the dream vacation board on Pinterest. I decided to pick Iceland as my hopeful destination.

Follow Hope’s board Iceland Trip! on Pinterest.

I’ve been wanting to go to Iceland for forever, but it never really pans out. I love mountains and hiking, and cold weather makes me incredibly happy. My best friend is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Iceland, and so I decided to do this assignment and pretend that it was an actual possibility that I could get over there to visit her.

When compiling the board I tried to make it a mix of locations I want to visit and links out to travel guides. I included lists of things to do in various cities, restaurants to go to, and foods to try. I also included tips on traveling, such as how to beat jet lag or how to pack efficiently. I thought that these really round out the collection that I pulled together. I even included a guide to properly packing a back pack!

I also included links to what type of clothes and accessories and such to pack. There were a lot of great cold weather packing suggestion lists, along with useful things to bring on a trip. In addition, I added information on how to pack lightly and use carry on bags efficiently.

Now all I need is approximately $1200 and a place to crash and I’ll be golden!

I chose to complete the Create Your Own Dream Vacation on Pinterest  Web Assignment (three stars). You can see my board containing the pins I collected about my Italian trip here.

I really hope a trip to Italy will happen for me someday. My dad always said we would go after I graduated from college. Its so close now, I just hope we actually go through with the idea. Well to help make it a reality here’s some information to consider while planning.

  • Should plan to go in beginning of May while still in off-season
  • Stay for a week and maybe a couple days more
  • Airfare even if near offseason can be up to 600 dollars
    • Fly in to Rome to save money
  • Start from Rome, then to Florence, then Venice
  • Make sure have appropriate Italian currency, because credit cards not widely accepted there
  • Use train system to travel after arriving to reduce cost and not be responsible for a rented car
  • Dress more upscale than traditional tourist to reduce pickpocketing in major cities
  • Shopping stores end in mid afternoon, while dinner is served after 8pm
  • Visit Coliseum, art museums, take time to enjoy non-touristy natural beauty of the land, ride in gondola
  • Experience real Italian cuisine, try new things (not just what I know of American counterparts)
  • Learn enough Italian to get around before hand. Not overly so, but at least the top 50 words or phrases
  • Make sure our passports and visas are order
  • Have Fun!

My dream trip is to the islands of Indonesia. During my freshman year I took a class called Modern Indonesian History and loved the class and professor. Since then I have grown a fondness for the country and would be my dream vacation.

Realistically, I think this trip could happen but more than likely while I’m still young. A roundtrip ticket is about $1200 plus hotels and other expenses. Another thing to take note would be the 23 hr plane ride which would be miserable. Indonesia also requires a visa on arrival which would be a little bit of a hassle not not too bad.

Another decision would have to be choosing where in Indonesia I would go. Obviously the famous capital Jakarta and the resort Bali, but I’m sure places such as Sumatra are just as incredible.

For this assignment, I used Pinterest and created a new board, pinning different places that I would love to visit. I have never used Pinterest before, and always assumed it was more geared towards females. It was super easy creating my board, and from there, I just searched for different locations and pinned them. You can also follow other peoples accounts, just like other social media accounts, but I do not see myself using this platform again (unless it’s for another assignment).

Once I get my money right and put some aside strictly for travel, I hope to visit some of these places. I love tropical weather, so there are a good amount of locations pinned on my board such as Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Mexico to name a few. I have never been skiing, but heard about some good places in Colorado, such as The San Juan Mountains. Amsterdam is always a good place to stop when traveling through Europe (especially the cafe’s, wink wink). Other stops while in Europe would be Switzerland and Spain to experience the culture. As far as in the States, Venice Beach is a must, and New York is always great to visit any time of the year.

This Dream Vacation of mine requires mucho dinero, but I feel it would be life changing if I ever had the opportunity to make it a reality. One thing for sure is that I will have at least visited some of these places before I leave this earth. Though I haven’t traveled much at this point in my life, it remains a goal of mine. I enjoy new surroundings and meeting new people.

To go abroad…

The purpose of this Digital assignment was to create a story through the social media application Pinterest. This was such a cool assignment because I love Pinterest. I use it all the time but I have never thought of using it as a way to tell a story.

I think that it is such an interesting way of telling a digital story because Pinterest allows clickable links that allow the story to expand without much effort. For my “Dream Vacation” I chose to go to London, Paris, Portugal, and Greece. They are all very different but that is one of the things that I love about it.

I chose each place for a separate reason. London has always been a city on my bucket list. As I have talked about before I love Harry Potter and Kingscross is in London. I just love everything about the culture in Europe and especially in England. London is a just infamous city.

When I go here I want to see the London Eye, Big Ben, and go to Warner Brother’s Studios and visit the Harry Potter exhibit. I feel like all of these places are must-see places in London. It is my goals to one day visit all of the places I have listed above.

The second place I have chosen is Paris. I am studying French as part of my foreign Language requirement. I would love to see the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. I also chose Portugal and Greece as destinations on my “Dream Vacation.” Greece has been on my bucket list since I saw the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.” It looks so beautiful there. The appeal in appearance is what drove me to pick most of these places.

I think that this vacation is just a dream. It would cost so much to fly from destination to destination and have money to spend on shopping and eating. However I do think that is possible for me to go to each place one at a time.

In order for this vacation to come true I would have to save my money for a long period of time. In order to do large vacations like that they require in depth planning. I would have to figure out what places I wanted to see and how I would get there. I think that one of the largest things that would have to be researched is where places are. When you are traveling you want to get to destinations fast so you can take it all in.

I think that the only easy place to visit would be England. All three of the other countries have native tongues and languages that can make it hard to navigate. France would be the easiest for me next to England since I speak the French language.

For my board I picked different sites and recipes that I would try. When you go to another country you have to try to get a sample of each aspect of culture. That means eating the food, visiting the sites, and dealing with language barriers.

Overall, I would love to visit these sites and hope one day I get the chance. In the meantime enjoy my Pinterest board of what I would like my journey to look like.

HERE IS MY PINTEREST BOARD:

Take me here…

To the Beautiful, peaceful, timeless Bora Bora. My dream vacation….or Honey Moon. It is just such a breath taking place. Every picture looks so perfect, it is hard to grasp that this is a real place. To the crystal clear water, to the incredible waterfalls, and rock. Everything about this place looks perfect. I just hope one day I can experience it in more than just pictures. Guess I should start saving for this one though!

My D.S. Assignment #1: Create A Pinterest Board Of Your Dream Vacation!

Screen shot 2014-07-22 at 11.42.10 AM

http://www.pinterest.com/hayleyjoe/my-dream-vacation/

My dream vacation involves visiting three countries in Southeast Asia. I have been long awaiting the day that I save up enough money waitressing to travel abroad after I graduate! My plan is to start off in Thailand, then travel to Vietnam next, and finish my vacation in Indonesia. I would most likely spend 3 weeks in each country. I pinned a variety of sights and activities that I want to conquer while on my dream vacation including, visiting the Pink Beach on Komodo Island in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia; eating authentic Vietnamese spring rolls and pho, and visit the highly praised Elephant Nature Park in northern Thailand.

In order to get the trip I want, I have to save up close to $5,000. Although the dollar is worth more than the currency used in the three aforementioned southeastern asian countries, travel expenses begin to accumulate. Airfare is the most expensive aspect (so book WAYYYY ahead of time), but attending certain park and other attractions can be pricey too. I would be backpacking and staying in hostels, so my accommodations would be relatively inexpensive. As for food, I am really looking forward to trying everything I can get my hands on. From street car vendors to glitzy restaurants, I want to try as many places as my budget will allow.

I will also need to get temporary holiday visas for each country, which I’ve heard is easy for Americans to receive. Unfortunately, that does not go both ways. For example, when I was in China last summer I spoke with several people who said it is extremely difficult for them to get visas to visit or vacation in the United States, which seems so unfair!
