Audio Assignment – What A Song Might Mean To You

This assignment had us pick a song with special significance to us, and then explain that importance through audio. I picked the song Guts, from Berserk. You might remember I created a ringtone with a different song from the series ages ago.

Audio Assignment – Make Your Own Ringtone

While I do like the song I used for that, Guts is by far my favorite song. It’s pretty obvious by my play counts how much I love this song (1000 of those plays were in one month), but I went into slightly more depth below. I put the song in the background of my explanation using Audacity, more as an attempt to block out some background noises from my bad iPhone mic, but make sure you listen to the full version without my dumb voice talking over it.

Audio Assignment – Create A Ds106 Radio Bumper

This assignment has us create an in theme radio bumper for ds106 radio. Before starting the project, I made sure I listened to the radio at least once, so I understood how it worked and sounded. I let the idea fester for a week or so, until I got the idea for what to say and the music I wanted to use. The background music is from Cowboy Bebop, and is the song of the western themed bounty hunter information show Big Shot. I thought it was pretty lively and appropriate.

The process itself was fairly easy: I recorded my best western accent into my iPhone, brought that and the song into audacity, and just trimmed it up a bit. I think it came out pretty well, but I wish I had a better mic that my earbuds.

Audio Assignment – Sound Effects Story

For this assignment, we were supposed to use sound effects to tell a story. I wanted to tell a saloon story, and from checking the ds106 page, it seems most of you went with that as well. Of course, I wanted a little more action, so my audio tells the tale of a lively saloon, visited by a dastardly villain. A gunfight ensues, and the villain walks out unharmed. However, this is normal business in the wild, wild west, so all the patrons go back to their drinks and lively music.

I used a combination of freesounds.org and youtube clips to gather my sound effects. The song is called Five Card Shuffle by Kevin Macleod, and the gun sound effects were from Unforgiven. I had quite a few tracks to deal with, but it was mostly simple editing and placement, as well as utilizing fade in and out effects. One new trick I learned is how to use the change tempo effect. This allows to you speed up a song, slow it down, or drag a certain part of a sound on for longer. My most notable use of this was speeding up the song, as the original was a little too slow for my idea of a saloon song. Anyway, hope you enjoy it! Also, as a note, I’m not sure if this is really loud or not, since my computer is kinda quiet in general, so headphone users beware.

Spooky Sounds

*This assignment bank was created as if someone was walking through a graveyard. Here are the sounds I chose to make it sound super spooky! Enjoy!

Sound Effect Story

*For my story I had to incorporate my western belle. So what I did was an alarm clock to have her be waken up, then she went on her horse to her boyfriends house. Was happy to see him so she started kissing him, but then laughed because in the back of her mind she knew that she wanted to kill him for cheating on her. Which is why the gun is in the end, and we are left hanging with what she’s gonna do afterward.

Celebrity Speed Dating

*For this Assignment Bank we had to quickly talk about our interests for 30 seconds. It was really hard to think on the spot what I had to say. But overall it was a cool idea! I incorporated a picture of Liam Hemsworth..because he’s my favorite

You’re Listening To…

ds106, of course! That’s what you’re listening to!

This week, we had to create a radio bumper, and even though it is in the Assignment Bank, it was not worth any stars this week… :(

I first recorded the audio, and then added some background tunes to it, so it wouldn’t be so boring… The sound effects were found on freesound.org.

Let’s Take it Slowwww

For 3 stars this week, I completed the 800% Slower Assignment.

I have come to learn that Audacity hates me.  In order to keep the smoothness of the track, I slowed down the track using the Paulstretch effect under the effects menu.  After I made some rough calculations, it was slowed down by 40%.  At this point, the track went from being ~4 minutes to ~2.5 hours.  I then tried to slow it down even further, and when I applied the Paulstretch, it took 3 hours to apply to the whole track.  Once it was completed, Audacity would always quit, and break, and UGH!! It was so annoying! From now on, I think I will stick to tracks that are less than 10 minutes or so in length. Lesson learned.

Here is the original song:

And here is the slowed down version:

When Rick Met Walter

**A note to the readers: If you watch The Walking Dead, and have followed the stories of Walter the Walker and Sally Slaughterhouse, you will know that they live in New Mexico, after the world went to shit, just like Rick and company in the TV series. Last season on TWD, Rick was last seen in Alexandria, VA. Is he still there? Does anyone know his last whereabouts? Readers, you have been forewarned.**

Please: Listen, before reading any further.

It sounds like Rick has made it to New Mexico, and Sally has some coping to deal with.  This means things have drastically changed for our story.

We will come to mourn the loss of dear Walter, but our story must continue.  As for now, Sally will deal with the obstacles in her path, and will live on in honor of him.

Rest In Peace, Walter. You will be missed.

“Alright, Let’s Remix This Business…”

For 3.5 stars this week, I completed the Music Mashup Assignment.  The purpose of this assignment was to take two distinct songs and mash them together.  I chose The Phoenix by Fall Out Boy, and Alles Neu by Peter Fox.  These two songs have similar intros, and I have wanted to overlay them for the longest time.  So what better time to do it then now!

Alles Neu is one of my favorite songs by Peter Fox.  He is a German artist and is also part of the group Seeed.  The Phoenix is one of my favorite songs by Fall Out Boy, off of their album titled Save Rock and Roll.  Here are the original songs:

Since The Phoenix was in M4A format, I had to install the FFmpeg Import/Export Library, in order to import that audio file.  Once both were imported, I cut, clipped, and edited both tracks until the end product was something that I liked that sounded somewhat decent!

I realized after I had mashed these two songs that they have similar themes: starting over.  The phoenix rises from the ashes, and “alles neu” translates literally to “all new.”  They were just meant to be mashed!!

The big challenge came when I tried to upload it.. SoundCloud removed the Mashup and wouldn’t let me try to upload it again, so I instead just uploaded it directly to my blog. Check it out below, and enjoy!
