Audio Assignments

A Day in the Life of your Character

Record a day in the life of your host character. Using your character’s voice and Audacity, explain what happens during their typical day. Where do they work, what do they eat, who do they live with? Try to make it at least one minute long.

Interviewing The Talent

For this assignment, you should sit down and have an interview with your host. Ask them all the hard hitting questions their fans have been dying to find out. Don’t forget to get their opinions on the class and other hosts! You should ask your host at least five questions.

“Remind Me Someday”

We all remember the infamous Nickelback mashup, “How You Remind Me of Someday.” However, Chad Kroeger and company aren’t the only musicians with similar-sounding songs. For this assignment, I suggest that participants use Audacity and SoundCloud to pull off the same infamous stunt as before, but with another musical act of their choosing. It can be Nickelback, again, for optional authenticity, but the focus of this challenge will be on the variety.

(WARNING: This is only for comedic effect. This is a parody of the original mashup, and you’re not supposed to take this seriously, and just have fun with it. This is one of those occasions where the learning experience gained is more important than the final product made.)

Please!! Someone call the Police!!!

You know how in crime movies and criminal investigation shows they usually include an audio of a victom talking to the police over the phone? Well in this assignment make an audio of you talking to the police over the phone. Your story of why you are calling the police is up to you, but make sure the audio has two different voices using Audacity or some other audio editing software.

Kiss This Guy

Have you ever misheard a song’s lyrics in a hilarious, completely wrong way? Like when Jimi Hendrix sings Purple Haze, and instead of “Excuse me, while I kiss the sky” you heard “Excuse me, while I kiss this guy.” For this assignment, make an audio recording of yourself singing along to the original song, but with the wrong lyrics that you heard. For inspiration, see KissThisGuy.com. For an example see http://billgx.com/2015/09/kiss-this-guy/

Good Morning Message for The Village

It is always such a wonderful thing to hear a bright cheery voice delivering the Good Morning Message in The Village. Why don’t you bring some joy to the day and to your fellow Residents by creating and recording a wonderful message of community and cheer. Share your audio via Soundcloud and tag it appropriately.

Do You Hear What I Hear?

Record glimpses of the different sounds you hear throughout the day, whether it be busy street noises, people talking, birds chirping, etc. and compile it into a single audio clip on Sound Cloud.  Use an audio software such as Audacity to put them all in one.

Real Housewives Tagline

You’re about to be the next star on the Real Housewives. Create a tagline that expresses who you are. Upload your recording to SoundCloud and blog about why your tagline suits you.

Spooky Dialogue

Create a track of surreal or scary dialogue.  Use an audio editing program like Audacity to record your voice, then layer it with distortions, speed changes, other sounds, or anything else you can think of.  The idea is to make yourself sound like something otherworldly.

Make Your Song YOUR Song

So is there anybody else out there who, when they hear a certain song, can just relate to it on any and every emotional level?

Because that happens to me pretty much all the time… Really, guys; I almost have 41 hours worth of songs on my “Starred” Spotify playlist as absolute proof that I FEEL TOO MANY FEELS.

So I figured, why not turn that burden into something beautiful?! After all, that’s how some of the best creations come about!

So for this proposed Audio Assignment, I want my future fellow DS106ers to take the song that means the most to them, perhaps the song that has been unofficially dubbed as “Your Song”, and re-write it so that you can share the story that you hear whenever you hear it with all of us … In other words, fully and fearlessly make it YourSong.

You can pretty much take creative liberty with this in that you can use any song you like (… if Soundcloud takes it down for copyright, simply upload the audio directly to your blog!), can use and can re-write in an a humorous way, heartfelt way, or a combination of the two! It can be a full on parody like some of the YouTube greats have done, or tell the more sentimental side of things, like I chose to do. In my case, I chose to use my current favorite song, Wiz Khalifa & Charlie Puth’s See You Again, which they wrote as a tribute to the late Paul Walker from the Furious franchise, to tell the story of those I’ve similarly lost and still love, and my sole reason for having hope and continuing to journey on in this life with which I’ve been gifted. I’ve been clinging to that hope for a while (this semester especially) and I dearly hope it’s a rope that my fellow Eagles can grab onto along with me.

The ONLY requirement for this assignment is that you check “Recorded in the DKC Recording Booth” off your UMW Bucket List! Channel your inner rockstar and utilize the soundproof booth, awesome editing capabilities, and even the totally authentic equipment that is normally reserved for said rockstars but that we as Eagles are lucky enough to have available to us EVERY. SINGLE. DANG. DAY! After all, when making Your Song, why shouldn’t you make it the best possible quality it can be?! Even if you aren’t a singer, an example clearly epitomized by me (…sorry, by the way, for making your ears bleed; please don’t direct any subsequent hospital bills my way!), totally own it and pretend that, at least for the moment, you are.

The selfie is not part of said requirement, but a little impromptu photo booth sesh never hurt anybody! Plus, you might even earn creativity points with your professor, which is never a bad thing ;)

So … Let the creating commence! And may the auto-tune be forever in your favor :).
