Mixtapes can come in different forms--sometimes a mixtape is just a collection of one's favorite tracks, sometimes it is a collection of tracks put out by a sinlge artist. Sometimes they have small edits made to them, like a DJ saying their catchphrase. Try creating a mixtape of your own. Mixtape is broadly defined in this case. It can just be a collection of songs with some theme (genre, etc.), or you can mess with the tracks. You can add a small touch here and there or edit the tracks to your heart's content, adding outside sounds using tools from ...

Now that we have a #ds106 radio up and running creating a 15 to 30 second bumper for the station. What is a bumper? It is a short recording that identifies the radio station with signature music or an expression that makes sure the listeners know what they are tuned into (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumper_(broadcasting)). So for ds106 it should certainly include "DS106 Radio" and some sort of message about the station with voice over music.

Within this assigment, you must find some spooky sounds and create a scary audio clip. Select more than four sounds and overlap them on a program like Audacity. You can use Freesound to select your sounds. Make them as spooky as possible. Good luck!

I think it's interesting to look at how the vocal and instrumental composotion changes the emotion of a song. For this assignment find a cover of a song and combine it with the original version of the song to create a new/remixed version of the song. After you've finshed remixing your version, listen to it and see what kind of emotion it now makes you feel. To complete the assignment, I chose to take Don't Forget Me by Harry Nilsson and combined it with Hamilton Leithauser's (The Walkmen) cover of this song.

In the 70s, Dickie Goodman created a series of interviews where the interviewee responded with snippets from popular songs. They were hilarious.

For this assignment, string together pictures and music of an artist and create a remixed music video to one of their songs! My example is Michael Jackson's Remember the Time. I used to do videos like this with Lady GaGa, and I did one previously with Michael Jackson, so I took some cut videos from my laptop and matched them with an upbeat song by him. I painstakingly attempted to match his dance moves to the beat of the song, and added pictures to help keep with the timing! Hope y'all enjoy it!

Tell a story using nothing but sound effects. There can be no verbal communication, only sound effects. Use at least five different sounds that you find online. The story can be no longer than 90 seconds. Another example (by a UMW student): http://ds106.us/wp-content/audio/audio_story.mp3

If you had the opportunity to create your own theme music, what would it sound like? Get creative and create your own sounds or select an instrumental from Youtube or any other source that represents you well. If you are going the youtube route, remember to use VidtoMp3. Once you have selected your background music, find some sounds/effects to incorporate into it using Audacity or other editing software. You can find free sounds at SoundBible. Once completed, upload to Soundcloud and share it with us.
