Eat your peas!

This is an old ad that I used Color Splash on!

One of my passions is baby photography.  When taking pictures of a baby there’s certain challenges that you run into that you wouldn’t with an adult. Babies don’t take directions and only cooperate by accident.  It falls on me to try and adapt accordingly and take a great picture.  In this particular image I decided to take away the color from the baby to show its peacefulness while it’s sleeping but keep the bright pink of the props to still show that anything a baby does is still very exciting.

The reason I chose this assignment is because I found this technique very interesting and had never worked with it before.  I thought I could try it out on my newborn photography and see how it interests me.  Overall I find this effect aesthetically pleasing both commercially and as a fine art form.  I think from an advertising viewpoint this would be something that would attract parents of newborns to my business.  From an artistic viewpoint, this technique could be used in a lot of different ways to help convey dramatic emotions within a picture.

To create this image I grabbed a stock image from one of my newborn photo shoots.  I then uploaded the image into photoshop and duplicated it.  I left the main layer in color and the duplicate I made black and white.  I lowered the opacity of the black and white image and used the erase tool to easily erase all areas I wanted to do in color.  After that I increased the opacity back to 100%.  All I had left to do was flatten my image and I was done.

The Twins Have Color…

The Twins in Color

David and I took the Twins to the park after I went to the Doctor. Nothing was wrong from David’s perspective. The Twins were in color but nothing else was…

After doing Color Splash earlier in the semester, I really wanted to revisit it for this assignment. To do this, I opened up Gimp and imported my photo. I then created a new layer which was a copy of my photo and changed the saturation on that layer to 0%. This made my top layer grayscale. I then took my eraser tool, made it as small as I could and carefully erased around the inside edge of what I wanted in color. Once I was satisfied, I finished erasing the inside edge of my top layer so that the only part of my photos in color were one object in each photo.

I also modified the instagram page of the original photo with Hackasarus for fun even though it was not part of the assignment since I wanted to give the photo some context.

ds106 Assignment B- Splash the Color

I chose to recolor the corsage my boyfriend got for me for my senior prom. The ribbon in it was such a vivid blue, that I thought it would be a really pretty picture to make black and white and then color splash it.

Splash of Color

I decided to choose the splash of color assignment for assignment B. I chose this particular picture, because I thought that bringing out the color of the red, white, and blue bandana would completely make this picture “pop.” 534388_10150960000392090_1666527362_n

I decided to take a picture I captured at Myrtle Beach during the winter time. The picture was already pretty gloomy looking, but this orange shell really caught my eye. I thought it would have an even greater affect in black and white.

Assignment Bank | Two Points

The Assignment:

“For this week, you need to complete 10 stars worth of Visual Assignments — this could be doing 5 assignments rated 2 stars, etc. One of them is required by everyone, so we can all do the same one and compare our ideas, but beyond that, you get to pick the ones you want to do to complete your 10 pack.”

Splash The Color

tire color splash

I happen to find “color spot” photos to be distracting unless REALLY WELL done and left to a minimum.  I did this just to try it out.  Someone who did this well is @bellekid.  Her photo with the taxi and model is AWESOME!

Photoshop was my friend in this post. Nothing fancy, just selected the tire, selected the inverse and set to black and white.
