I always have fun with these Splash of Color assignments. It is so cool to take a photo that is in black and white, and add a burst of color to it. Your eyes just zone in on the color when you look at it, which is pretty powerful. I got help from this website on how to bring out the color after making the photo black and white! Here it is: http://www.picturecorrect.com/tips/color-areas-black-white-photos/
It was pretty much a matter of using the channel mixer layer in Photoshop CS6 and then using the brush tool to color in the part that you wanted to appear colorful. It was pretty easy when following the tutorial, so I definitely always recommend using others to help your work, because it is super helpful and beneficial. Hope you all enjoy my work! Comment, critique, whatever! Make art damnit!
One of my visual assignments this week was to add a “splash” of color to a black and white picture. This is something I have always wanted to learn how to do and it only took Ds10-Awesome to motivate me to learn. The first one I did was a forgotten barn that needed a little color love.
I thought it turned out okay. It was hard to navigate around the foliage. This is the original:
After I saw how easy it was to do this, I decided to give it another go. I think this KitchenAid splash turned out better.
I love how it bursts with the red. I guess that is the whole idea huh?
Here is the original shot:
If you want to do this, its very easy. Go get Gimp photo editing software… just google it. Once you have it up and running, open a photo, and duplicate the layer by clicking on layer-> duplicate layer.
Once you have 2 layers up, desaturate the top layer by clicking on colors -> desaturate. Next click on layer and then choose Mask and Add Layer. You will want the mask to be White (full opacity). Now on to the fun stuff… paint over the object you want to be colored with the paintbrush. You will want to paint over the object with black being your foreground color. Voila! Color Splash.
If you have any difficulty, notify me in the comments and I will try to assist you.
For my first Visual Assignment I decided to do Splash that Color!
Basically you take any photo, turn it into a black and white photo, and then use some type of photo software and insert back some of the original color of the photo in one spot.
Process: To make this as simple as possible I decided to download a free app to my Iphone called “Color Effects”. Basically all you have to do for this app is upload any photo that you want. (It will automatically put the photo into a black and white setting) And then you just use your finger to put back the color of the photo where you want! So easy, fast, and simple!
Inspiration: I decided to use a photo from my photo library that I had posted to Instagram last week. The photo is of one of my favorite snacks Wheat Thins! And FYI if you have never tried the Sundried and Tomato Basil flavor you are missing out on one of the best things you will ever taste in your life!
Having a little too much fun with my new app Color Splash, thanks to the Splash the Color visual assignment. It’s a little guard tube keychain and my guard whistle on my keychain. I used the ColorSplash app for the iPhone and Picasa for the zoomed in effect as well as tweaking the shades and hues and everything. I like this picture because being a lifeguard has been such a large part in my life for the past 4 years, being my first job and everything. It was a lot of fun creating and playing with the colorsplash app, as is evident by the 20 pictures on my photo that I did with this app today.
Through a random search of the visual assignments I came across Splash that Color. This assignment was very challenging. I downloaded many different free trial programs on my computer to be able to do this color affect but it all seemed to not work. After going back to the page and looking over at the assignment I realized that it said “You can do this in a number of ways with photo editing software or using mobile apps.” When I read using mobile apps, a lightbulb went off. Why hadn’t I thought about that before?? Well I got my iPhone, and after a while of searching, and intense review reading for the perfect app, I found it!!
I downloaded an app called iSpalsh Free! Not only was it free, but it worked amazingly! Being fall season, I decided to use the picture of the pumpkin I carved last Halloween. I took the picture on my front porch on a cold fall day. For the splash part of the assignment I uploaded the picture to my app, and made the whole image black and white. After making it black and white, I had to go around and refill what I wanted to have color and what I didn’t. This was hard for me because my fingers kept coloring outside of the pumpking which turned out to be a huge challenge. Maybe my fingers were to big, but for some reason I could not get it to be perfect and the small imperfections showed on my picture but overall I was very happy with the turn out.
Good thing for good apps, and good phones.
The third Visual Assignment I chose to do for this week was the “Splash the Color“.
I liked doing this assignment because I really like things being in black and white, it’s always been one of my favorite effects. There is a really cool picture that is decorated in many different colors and I figured it would be easy to make one of the colors stick out. When the picture is not in black and white then the colors mean so much more, but having only one of the colors sticking out makes it that much cooler.
The process I used to do this was simply taking a picture of the poster that says “PEACE” hanging in my friends room. I found another iPhone app called “Dash of Color” and I basically just uploaded my picture onto the app and uncolored one of the letters. It wasn’t a very hard or long process, but I knew that the picture would look cool with just one color sticking out. If someone wanted to this assignment it would probably be just as easy. I know there are even some camera’s (like the cannon) that have the ability to just have one color sticking out. There are many different sites that do the same exact thing, I know it wouldn’t be very difficult. It may be difficult to find ONE color that sticks out most, considering many things are VERY VERY colorful.
For my second visual assignment, I decided to do the Splash the Color, worth 2 stars.
Here are my two color splashes (I had so much fun I had to do two).
This is passionflower, which looks really awesome in person.
Even though I took this photo a while ago, I love the way the red coat stands out. It’s also interesting because of the wing my sister is holding.
To color splash, I first downloaded the 30 day free trial of photoshop (which I will probably purchase the full version because I like photoshop). Then, I used this tutorial. I put in my first layer, the actual photo. Then I duplicated it and named the duplicate top layer. I then went to image-adjustments-black and white to make the top layer black and white. I used the eraser tool to remove the black and white layer, revealing the color beneath it. I had some trouble but with a couple quick undos, I was able to just focus and make the color I wanted to stand out. After that, I just saved the image and uploaded it to flickr.
This assignment was to take a photo and turn into black and white, but keep the original color for one single object. I kinda knew how to do this just from fiddling around before with the photo editing software, Picasa, that I like to use for all of my pictures. But I couldn’t remember how to use it. So I just clicked the Help button and figured it out from there.
I used the Focal B&W effect to edit this photo. It enabled me to turn the picture black and white while keeping a circular area the original color. So I was just flicking through some of my favorite pictures from high school, and decided to use this picture and highlight the blue balloon. And the title of this blog post is from one of my favorite songs, “Black Balloon” by the Goo Goo Dolls just because the blue balloon made me think of it!
This is a picture from my senior year from my outdoor track team’s end of season banquet. I love this picture because it has some of my best friends in it and we all look so happy!
