Assignment Idea

10 Seconds of Thanks

1. Using a timer, write what you’re thankful for in just 10 seconds! Anything and everything that you can think of being thankful for is fair game, but stop at 10 seconds.
2. Share what you’ve written on a blog, wiki, or some other digital space that others can comment on.
3. Bonus! Complete a 10 second drawing of yourself to accompany your writing, inspired by the November 19th, 2012 Daily Create!

Narrative Ambiance

Take a favorite poem, inspiring quote or passage from a book (or even a movie monologue, if you like!) and record yourself reading it. Then set it to original video you’ve recorded with some kind of music or sound effect in the background. The final video should be at least a minute long.

The goal of this assignment is to tell a story that evokes a specific mood–sadness, joy, hope, anger, fear, peace, wonder–and to do so not only through the literal meaning of whatever you choose to read, but through your use of original video and music or sound effects. Be creative! There’s a ton of different ways to interpret this assignment. When you write your blog post about it, tell us what mood or feeling you wanted to convey, what you want the viewer to take away from your video, and how successful you feel you were.

YouTube Duet

Can two different YouTube song videos work together to make a new piece of musical art simply by combining the videos? An example of LCD Soundsystem – New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down played with Miles Davis – Louis Malle’s Elevator To The Gallows Recording Session seems to make a case for a “Yes” answer.

See it done via YouTube Doubler and also as a screencast of the video playing in two different browsers.

To make this assignment work, find music from two different eras and/or genres and see if you can make a duet by playing them together. What new story does this tell?

Recycle The Media

During the Fall 2012 iteration of ds106 taught at UMW, we collected media from students that was unused in their previous work uploaded to http://dropitto.me/ds106phonar (the password was “photos4life” newly added media might take some time to be moved- we have to feed the squirrels that do this manual labor). The content was migrated to a public download site, which contains at least 150 images, audio and video http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO.

Your task for this assignment is to mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types (e.g. audio and image, imahe and video). The story most likely would be done as a video, but see if you can make these different kinds of media make sense as the content.

What kind of recycled story can you make out of this cast off media?

One Movie Watches Another

Find some clips of a classic movie where a character is in a movie theater, or is watching something on a TV or computer screen. Edit in sequences from a newer movie’s trailer, one that you wou;d totally not expect this character to be watching. Get it? One movie watching another. If you are good, the watching character’s emotions will be relfectd by the scenes in the new movie. Even better, bleed some of the audio of the newer trailer over the original so the sounds overlap.

For examples see:

Go, Vote!

Create a simple “Go, Vote” poster reminding people of their civic duty. Feel free to use the Library of Congress website if you’re a U.S. citizen, the Library & Archives of Canada if you’re from “up north” or any other governmental archive of historical imagery.

What Do Pets Think About?

Your pet cat, dog, turtle, snake [fill in name of pet here] spends a lot of time with you, do you imagine what they are thinking about? Create a series of video sequences of them that show them in contemplative mode, then record over that the narration of what they might be saying to themselves. Pad with an fun opening title, ost to YouTube, and wait for fame and fortune to come your way.

Character/Genre Song Mashup

Find a theme from TV and/or movies (e.g. monsters, cowboys, romance, planes, beaches) and edit a video sequence with a song track from a pop song that matches it. The more short cuts the better!

Inspired by Leerone’s cover of the Donovan song Season of the Witch with famous witch characters from film and television.

Do the Hitch Cut

Alfred Hitchcock, the legendary master of suspense, shares a brief 90-second lesson on how a simple change in a three-shot edit can result in evoking a completely different response from the viewing audience. Can you do the Hitch Cut? Make two versions of a short three-shot video — in each instance maintaining the first and third shots, but changing out the second shot in each. Can you get a completely different result from your viewer?
Virtual Bonus Points for attempting this assignment with something different from just the changing face of a character as in Hitch’s example.

Be a Critic of Nostalgia!

Create a video that critiques a classic movie (preferably a movie that hasn’t aged well) in a funny manner! The idea here is to find a film from your childhood and apply your adult sensibilities to it. Point out the shallow writing, lousy effects, etc. Editing in effects and getting into character are a must! Be over the top, over critical, INSANE!
