Assignment Idea

Theme Verse

Create your own verse from a song! Pick a few lines from a few of your favorite songs that have the same focus. Then, combine them together to make a new verse in a song. Make sure it makes sense and it goes together! See an example here: http://emilydeane.com/?p=158

DS106 Rap

Write and perform your very own rap. Create your own beat box or experiment with audacity’s audio settings. Remember to think: What Would Dirt Mcgirt Do?

What I want to be when I grow up

You’re taking a college class here, so it’s about time you thought about the big question: What do you want to be when you grow up? Design a postcard from where and what you will be 10 years from now and write a message to your current self. Firefighter? Cop? Jim Groom-ologist? Let your imagination go wild- What do you want to be when you grow up? Check out an example here.

The Family Table

Everyone can recall some memory of growing up around the family table- be it Thanksgiving, day to day with siblings, across TV dinner trays, in the backseat at the drive-through of McDonalds. You know your family and these memories better than anyone. Take this chance to wax nostalgic for a minute, and recreate these magical memories. Here’s the catch: YOU have to be everyone at the family table. If you’ve ever seen Eddie Murphy’s “The Nutty Professor;” it’s the same idea, but no costumes required. Using Soundcloud or another audio recording program, give us a taste of what it was like around YOUR family table.

30 Second Documentary

Make a short, 30-second documentary, the topic is up to you. Some good ideas include:

*How to make something
*What someone’s job is like
*What it’s like trying something new
*Show yourself doing something you are terrible at
*Show yourself doing something you are AMAZING at

No narration necessary. Show, don’t tell.

5 Second Film

Make a supershort, 5-second film; basically enough time for one gag, bit, or joke. See examples (ALERT: Not G-rated, generally) at http://5secondfilms.com/. Or alternatively, try your hand at creating a 5 second version of a major movie.

Imitate some weather

Using only your voice and things within arm’s reach of your computer, imitate some kind of weather. It doesn’t have to be long, but make it sound as real as possible.

Tell a Story With No Dialogue

Create a video that tells a story where there is no dialogue or narration- only the camera, movement, and at most, a musical soundtrack, tell the story. Consider as the reference the opening and closing sequences of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window.

For examples, see The Reflector or The Art of Studying.

Alt Ending

Find a movie that you can create an alternate ending for- make a video, recreating the scene and the characters, that plays out a different way the movie could end.

As an example, see these re-filmed endings for Rear Window or Braveheart

As a reference, including either a clip of the original film or a screenshot.

Opening Credits Redux

In film, the design of opening credits can be an art unto itself. For this assignment, take an existing movie’s opening credits, and redo it in an alternate style that still honors the plot and style of the movie– or make it radically different.

See examples of the redone credits for The Good The Bad and The Ugly and Hitchock’s Rear Window.

Include in your blog post a clip or screenshots of the original credits to show the difference between that and what you create.
