Oh yeah, I brought it Back

Favorite Song (1 1/2 Stars)

Take your favorite song. Remove the lyrics. Play only up to thirty seconds of the song. Listener must be able to guess.

Story Behind the Story

Phew, let me tell you, while this may have been 1 1/2 stars, the process I took to get to this stage was excruciating. Let me back track.

I originally wanted to do the assignment where you slow a song down to 800%. It was going to be the very first audio assignment that I completed. I figured it wasn’t going to be super easy but I had confidence that I knew how to at least slow down a song. Wrong. This was just the beginning of my frustrations. First of all, audacity and I have had a constant battle this week and it is hard to say who is in the lead. Did you know that it is impossible to slow a song down to 800% on Audacity? Well guess what, IT IS. So after two trips to the DKC and and injured mouse pad, I finally gave up. I wanted so badly to figure out a way, but it just wasn’t going to happen. Maybe one day I will have the courage to go to war, but this battle was a shut out.

I still wanted to do something with music. Mash-ups and remixes have always been an interests of mine (but I could never in a million years make one), so this was my tiny step into the world of audio editing. Now since I HAD no idea what I was doing, I once again went to the DKC (I should just become a promotional ad for your center because I feel like I have been in there at least 10 times). I found out it really wasn’t as hard as I had expected. The tutor walked me through the steps and then we spent some time playing around to get it at a good point.

This assignment really brought in the idea of background sound being the influential piece of music. As I learned when reading Hanson’s piece, sound makes the purpose of the song important. This isn’t a perfect example, apparently some songs have so many layers that newbies like me just can’t get rid of all of them. At first I was extremely frustrated by some of the background noise. My tutor and I even had Dr. Burtis listen to it to make sure that it qualified the assignment. Even though she said yes, I still came home and tried my hardest to find a way to get rid of it. There was one point when my roommate asked “well why don’t you just use the instrumental version on youtube?” Two thoughts ran through my head, first, why did I not know that there was an instrumental version, and second, it wouldn’t be as satisfying knowing I hadn’t done it myself.

“There are no finished products, only due dates.”

Narrate the Process

In case you missed it, I had to do a throwback. I mean who didn’t like the Backstreet Boys? This was a confusing process and by the end it was a lot of clicking random buttons and moving dials to get it right where I wanted it. I dragged the song from my iTunes account (I’m not ashamed to say this) and put it in audacity. I cut it to 30 seconds and that is about how far I got before the DKC tutor stepped in. He was a lifesaver! We googled the process and went through the steps.

I have realized while there are certain steps to be taken in sound editing, a lot of it stems off of messing around with the functions. By the end, I couldn’t tell you what buttons were used, I just know that at some point we had done it. While I am confident that I could do it again, it seems that there is no set way to ensure a perfect outcome. The end game develops from what you make of the process, it is a part of you.

This was torture

Emotions Through Sound (3 Stars)

Try to convey a certain emotion, such as fear, stress, sadness, etc. by combing sound effects. They can be human sounds, such as crying with laughter in the background, to maybe express someone’s fears or being embarrassed, or you can get really artsy and try to convey an emotion by sound effects– like loud noises to show intensity, thunder to show fear, or quick, chirpy noises to show happiness. Edit at least 4 sounds together to show an emotion, upload it to soundcloud and then tag it with the appropriate tags.

Story Behind the Story:

This was my very first experience with Audacity, and let me tell you, I was not a happy camper. So, what better way to complete this assignment then to evoke the emotion of stress and anxiety. I have always been a fascinated by people that can take all of these different sounds and create something unique. Or I will hear mash-ups of songs and think “how on earth did they do that?” Well, I can finally say “I DID IT!” While I may not be on the same level, I am prettyyyyyyy proud of myself for combining four different sounds. It may not seem like a lot, but phew, did I spend way to much time finding the “right” noise, or figuring out which sounds should be louder or which ones needed to go in certain places. It was definitely not just a drag and drop assignment.

At this point, I still have a lot more audio assignments to complete, and a lot more to learn about sound editing. After a while, this one ended up being pretty easy (not saying that I didn’t just spend an hour putting it all together). I tried to jump right into the next assignment; I was feeling pretty confident that I could do it. Nope. Audacity just didn’t want to let me have this one. Kelsey 1: Audacity:1. Who will be victorious? Probably not me, but I will get there!

Anyway, the sounds in this assignment pretty much sum up how I feel when I am stressed or anxious, so basically everything I felt while making this wonderful sound compilation.

I really wanted to capture the essence of how little noises can escalate to full fledged episodes of irritation. I know pen clicking and gum chewing are the first noises that become noticeable when I am trying to focus. Then they become the only things I can focus on. However, I have adopted the habit of listening to soothing rain to drown out noises, but this assignment really hits on that point when there is no escape. I have the rain in the background but all of the other noises are overbearing. There is a moment, one little moment of just rain, but we all know that is too good to last.

I absolutely cannot stand these noises, and the amount of times I made myself listen to it to make sure it all sound good was TORTURE.

Work Itself: WARNING!!! ANNOYING AND IRRITATING NOISES LAY AHEAD OF YOU! BEWARE!

Narrate the Process:

I began by searching youtube for specific sounds that pertained to my own personal experience with the emotion of stress/anxiety: pen clicking and gum chewing. I then thought about what I try to do in order to relax and focus: listen to calming rain. Finally, I wanted a sound that encompassed the exact emotion I feel when I no longer have control over the sounds around me: a screaming goat (would you believe that, that was the most realistic scream I could find on youtube).

Once I had each of these sounds, I had to convert them from youtube videos into MP3s (which sounds like I know what I am doing but I actually had a friend tell me what needed to be done). I simply typed in “youtube MP3 converter for mac” into Google and clicked the very first link.

Screen Shot 2015-02-06 at 1.01.33 AM

You simply copy and past the URL of the YouTube link into the converter, download it, and open it in Audacity. Screen Shot 2015-02-06 at 1.15.53 AM

I opened each one in an individual window and then copied and pasted them all into one. From there I just played around with position, length, and loudness.

Dark Night Selfie

I decided to get started early on the visual assignments for week 3 of noir106. I took some time this evening to work on the Chimeratic Composition assignment submitted by the great Tom Woodward. The instructions are as follows:

Take at least three pictures (your own or someone else’s) mash them together into something that makes them more than the sum of their parts, something that would have been impossible in real life. Include the original images so we can see how they build on one another to make your final composition.

I love the example Tom provides:

Chimeratic Composition by Tom Woodward

He used four of his own images to create this supernatural, gothic moment. So I got inspired to try my hand at this assignment. First up was finding some of the images I had taken recently to mash together. I came across the following images I took while on a trip to NYC with my family. After browsing I got the idea of doing something with the life-size lego Batman and the shot of downtown Manhattan from the top of the Empire State Building.

I also found this shot I took while on the Staten Island Ferry of what looked like a helicopter size drone. Flickr user Bill VanderMolen commented on the shot to say it’s actually a “V22 Osprey. Tilt-rotor aircraft that the military plans to use to replace troop transport helicopters.”

V22 Osprey. Tilt-rotor aircraft that the military plans to use to replace troop transport helicopters.

This got me thinking, wow, that’s very Batman. State of the art, military-level artillery. I now had my third image. I opened each image as a layer in GIMP and started playing around. I cut out the parts I wanted use with the magic wand and lasso tools. I then scaled each layer to the proper size, and changed the colors. I made the city black and white, kept a bit of color on Batman. The Osprey was already black, so that was easy. I probably spent more time futzing than I need to, but I kinda like how it came out.

Batman atop the Empire State Building

After realizing that Batman’s positioning made it look like he was posing for a selfie, I decided to double up on this one. I returned to yet another Tom Woodward visual assignment: “Historical Selfies.” Gyeore Lee had done this assignment earlier in the day-–reminding me how  much I love it—so I decided to actually illustrate Batman’s selfie on a smart phone thanks to this template made available. It has all the layers, I just pulled my Batman selfie image in as a layer and cropped it for the phone screen. After that I added likes and tags.

And with that I have my first visual assignment of the week. I am only giving myself 3 stars for this one because I am committed to only doing assignments I haven’t tried before. I took a stab at the Historical Selfie last semester, which was fun. But I have to admit I think this one is much better, although not very historical at all.

Turkey Day

The greatest holiday of all is when the family is sitting around a big table talking about stories of the past and eating as much food as possible. If turkey does not tikle your fancy they try some mash potatoes and gravy, corn, carrots and so much more.

Bananas Foster, LaSalle style

Original assignment here

Original recipe here

Melt butter, low heat
Two tablespoons unsalted
Ten inch iron pan

Quarter cup sugar,
Brown, melts with spices on stove
Allspice and nutmeg

I like it “to taste”,
But allspice and nutmeg ground
Half spoon each is good

One shot of liquor
Banana, then simmer it.
Cook two bananas

Cut in half lengthwise
For one minute on each side.
Move fruit to the dish.

Add three shots dark rum.
Set it all on fire! Ignite!
Add a spoon of Zest.

Pour syrup over
The bananas, serve with
Crepes, nuts, or ice cream.

I decided to do bananas foster for this haiku recipe, because that is Delia LaSalle’s favorite food! This is the recipe I use myself when I make bananas foster or caramelized bananas at home. It uses extra alcohol and spices. I like to serve it over ice cream or waffles- yum! I thought that this would be an appropriate assignment to relate to Delia, because she enjoys cooking and lives in the culinary heart of the south. When the rest of America decided that eating all-white food (mashed potatoes, vanilla pudding, cream of potato soup, gelatinized tuna) was trendy, the NOLA region stuck by its roux and rice tradition.

Here, I used notepad to write again so that I could refer to the original recipe. Pages is a headache for simple writing like this.

Turkey Day!

The crisp, cool air and the smell of food cooking in the house.  Walking into a steaming hot kitchen, along with the sounds of clanging pans and the ruckus of all of the out-of-state family members.

Food is on the stove, in the oven, and the turkey is being fried in the backyard. My dad is running in and out checking out the turkey with a cold one in his right hand. The football game is playing in the living room, the Cowboys are on as per usual.  My grandpa is kicked back in his lazy boy teasing the dogs, my aunt is hollering at her three kids who are always up to some kind of mischief, and my stepmom is slaving away in the kitchen ordering me around to help.

I also get summoned to the kitchen, especially when it’s time to add the marshmallows to the top of the sweet potato casserole — which of course is my favorite part of the dinner.

Finally, we all gather around to load our plates up with all of the goodies: green bean casserole, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, corn, turkey, and croissant rolls. (This is of course after we argue about who gets to go in and get their food first — it’s the polite thing to do ;) ). Once the commotion of everyone getting their food is over, we sit down and have our feast. My grandpa has his plate back with him in his lazy boy chair — sharing it all with the dogs.

Once all of the meal has finished, I truck myself, full belly and all, to my mother’s house to have another meal. Forget the dessert when you have a second meal to attend to! I drive 20 minutes to join my mom and her boyfriend’s family for an equally as appetizing feast.

Soon as every meal has been vanquished and the desserts have been gnawed on, we go to bed in our tryptophan comas and sleep in heavenly peace until next year.

I’m thankful that once every year, the aroma of cooking food and the crispy cool air takes me back to the comfort of family and giving thanks.

Side note: this was my grandmother’s favorite holiday. When she passed away 3 years ago, I tried to keep the traditions of homemade food and assisting with keeping the spirit alive every Thanksgiving Holiday.

Part 6: Coming Full Circle

For the final piece in my storyline, Winnie and The Bees showdown in an epic finale which tests the resolve of both parties stuck in their stubborn ways. Well…maybe not. Personally, I like to leave things a little open ended and let the reader do some interpretation. Therefore, this assignment gives a few visual clues one what will occur but in the end is left up to the imagination.

I choose to complete a video mashup assignment called “Movie Trailer Mashup” which uses video editing to combine the potential storylines of different movies into a new storyline. Since Winnie has been pitted against the bees, this trailer combines narratives from both sides into a anticipatory tale. I also made a minor edit to the assignment in using an actual episode of Winnie the Pooh instead of a trailer. However, I did use a trailer from The Bee Movie which came out in 2007.

As you can tell, the trailer is a rather dramatic interpretation of what their final confrontation was like. The bees, who have had enough with the thievery of Winnie and friends, have prepared with high tech equipment and an organized approach. Where as Winnie along with his pals, Tigger and Piglet, have decided to go about it Wild West style.

I completed this assignment, I spent a good amount of time editing video segments in Windows Movie Maker. I started off by searching Youtube for content related to what I had in mind. When I found two scenes that I liked, I downloaded them using YoutubeinMP4.com which converts them into Mp4s. I also downloaded the trailer from the recent movie Godzilla which served as my narrative and background music.

Since the Winnie the Pooh clip was almost 21 minutes long, I spent a while editing that down to separate clips totaling about a minute and 20 seconds. I did the same with The Bee Movie trailer using about 40 seconds of it. I tried to edit the clips to where the soundtrack rose and fell according to the scene.

Overall, I’m happy with the way things turned out. Obviously, it won’t be perfect because the trailers are composed of clips trying to promote their narrative and not mine, but worked out anyways.

Runway Mix

Music Mash
3 Stars
Mashup Assignment

For one of Brooke’s final steps of preparation for her big day was creating a playlist for her part of the fashion show. I decided to create a music mash up clip of what the music would be like at the show. I didn’t want to make it an hour long mashup mix because that would bore anyone who was reviewing this, and I know it would not get listened to. Therefore, I made it short enough to get the idea of what types of songs will be played. The few songs I did choose, I didn’t want there to be a lot of words if any played, because I was more focused on the beats instead of the songs having words to keep the attention focused on her clothes and the models at the runway show.

I went to YouTube, and searched for runway instrumental music and listened to a variety of clips before deciding which to use in the mashup. I then downloaded the music clips I wanted to use, for this assignment I used 4 just to give everyone an idea of what the music would be like. After downloading each music clip to my computer.

AUD

I opened up Audacity and opened each clip individually, under the file tab and then clicked on “open”. After opening each one of the four clips, I cut and pasted each one to have them play one after the other. I then used the effect option at the top of the toolbar and chose fade in and fade out option to create a smooth transition between songs. After editing it completely I saved it and uploaded it to soundcloud.

Evolution of Beadie

Hiya! So this assignment can count towards the final project, it doesn’t have to but I just thought this would be a fun thing to do! i Did the A Changing Character mashup assignment. Although this was really tedious, I had a lot of fun going through to find different beatrice moments to use. I first downloaded each episode that Beatrice appeared in, mainly in season 2 and a few episodes of season 3 and 4. She does appear in season 5 but I stuck with season 2, 3, and 4 because these were the ones we watched during the semester. So once I had everything in iMovie, I skimmed through each episode and added where ever Beadie came up on screen. Now I admit this took forever. But it worked out because I definitely grabbed scenes that I would have missed otherwise. Once all of the scenes were all in one place I made a pass through to cut down on specifc scenes. While I was skimming the episodes I included most of the scene itself. That made the video almost an hour long! I’m glad I didn’t keep everything! So once I cut down on the scenes I went through another time and cut out some smaller appearances that she had because I wanted to really tell the story of Beatrice rather than little snippets of her appearing on screen. Once that was done I realized I cut down the video from an hour to just under 10 minutes! Definitely better than an hour long video! Granted it still is pretty long but I think it really shows who Beatrice was.

A view of what it looke like to edit the whole thing! Here is the final product!
