Recycle the media

This is mashup assignment 746, “Recycle the Media” is it worth 3 stars. The assignment read:

“During the Fall 2012 iteration of ds106 taught at UMW, we collected media from students that was unused in their previous work uploaded to http://dropitto.me/ds106phonar (the password was “photos4life” newly added media might take some time to be moved- we have to feed the squirrels that do this manual labor). The content was migrated to a public download site, which contains at least 150 images, audio and video http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO.
Your task for this assignment is to mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types (e.g. audio and image, imahe and video). The story most likely would be done as a video, but see if you can make these different kinds of media make sense as the content. What kind of recycled story can you make out of this cast off media?”

This assignment was kind of difficult. There wasn’t as much recycled media as I thought there would be, but I made it work with what I had. I created a short (extremely short) story about walking on a beach and forgetting my sunglasses. I walked back to the hotel (alone) where the Joker was waiting for me.

First, I downloaded all of the media I wanted to use for my story. I copied all 9 pieces (3 audio, 6 photos) to Windows Movie maker. (The Joker was supposed to be a GIF but he wasn’t being very cooperative.) I played around with the timing of the photos and audio and then I added a caption to each photo so you would have some idea what is happening. I hope you enjoy it! I know it isn’t the most entertaining thing you’ve ever watched.

Summarization #13 & #14

Mashup week was actually one of the simpler weeks for me. I expected it to be difficult since this involved using more than one media and mixing them together. However, these assignments didn’t take me very long to do and I feel I got very good results. When I first looked at the week 13 and 14 assignment page I was very overwhelmed and confused. I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting into for this week. But, this could have been due to the anticipation of Thanksgiving Break. I decided to take a chance and not do any of this work until after break (something I have never done in this class). It turned out fine! This was a good week to do that due to the simpleness of assignments.

I started the week with the Remix this blog assignment. I needed to know what I was heading into for the week. The references and examples explaining remix and the problems you might face with remixing really set the mood for the week.

I then started with the Mashup Assignments. I decided to use the recycled media in the Recycle the media assignment. I explain how I used the different media in my blog post about it. This assignment was 3 stars.

I then skipped around a bit and decided to head into remixing an assignment. I went through a few remixes until I got one that I thought would be fun! I remixed a game cover into a boring powerpoint presentation.

I then finished up the week finishing up my mashup assignments with What color is your world? (2 stars) and  the Consumer Mashup (2 stars).

The Good-Looking Internet Committee

It’s remix time! For my first remix assignment, I’ve decided to Create My Own SuperPAC!

The handy-dandy SuperSuperPAC Name Generator mentioned in the assignment was very helpful, as I didn’t have any solid ideas for how to approach this. It generated the following gems:

  • Hype The Nanny State Foundation
  • Rock Free Pizza Horde
  • Resurrect Outdoor Grilling Collective
  • Enrich The Stars and Stripes Foundation
  • Super Chill Not Being Tread On Horde
  • Ebullient Not Listening Legion
  • Good-looking Internet Committee
  • Affirm The Purple Mountain Majesty

Each of these names was fabulous in its own way, but I decided to go with Good-Looking Internet Committee. It just seemed to have so many possibilities. The SuperPAC content follows, but first I wanted to discuss the sources.

It was very difficult to find usable material. The poster was easy, but creating a video remix is challenging. I’ve done it before (my favorite being Chewbacca Explains It All), and every time it takes significantly longer than I expect to find clips that I can use, and I usually have ideas for sources that I end up having to cut out entirely because they simply don’t fit.

In the case of the political ad, I wanted to use a number of clips of celebrities (after all, anyone associated with the cause should be good-looking). I might have eventually found clips from each celebrity I brainstormed, but it would have required watching *a lot* of footage. And even then, sometimes it seems like a good fit until you start editing your mash-up, and then suddenly everything falls apart. There was an interview with Leonardo DiCaprio that I thought was perfect for this, and I ended up not using a single soundbite. (And I’ve misplaced the details on it, so I can’t link to it. The clip is from an interview he did with The Early Show about The Departed, available on YouTube if you feel like doing some digging.) I ended up using Matt Damon’s rant on Sarah Palin and an hilarious Tim Gun video from his Liz Claiborne days. And that was it.

I’m happy with the result, but man, that was a lot of work.

The Good-Looking Internet Committee

A  SuperPAC For the Information Age

Platform: Who cares about “open access”, online piracy and copyright compliance, or freedom of information? We want the Internet to be good-looking! And we don’t mean attractive web design. We want the Internet to only feature good-looking people.

Candidates We Support: Those who are attractive, or have attractive spouses (let’s be real, Obama is not much of a looker, but Michelle is a fashion icon)

Candidates We Oppose: Those who only care about SOPA and whatever the ITU might be up to, and can’t be bothered to put some effort into their personal appearance. We’re looking at YOU Donald Trump.

War Chest: We invested all of our funds in Facebook stock. Oh well.

Principle Donors: The Internet. That’s right. Cuz the Internet cares about this. (To clarify, “the Internet” is Google, YouTube, Facebook, Huffington Post, Gawker, Perez Hilton, 4chan, Reddit, yada yada yada.)

Tutorial for Recycled media

Recycle the media

During the Fall 2012 iteration of ds106 taught at UMW, we collected media from students that was unused in their previous work uploaded to http://dropitto.me/ds106phonar (the password was “photos4life” newly added media might take some time to be moved- we have to feed the squirrels that do this manual labor).

What kind of recycled story can you make out of this cast off media?

This was a 3 star worth assignment.

Summary of My Two Assignments

For my first assignment, I choose to do an audio assignment. The blog and tutorial can be found on this blog page with the tutorial.

Music Tag

One of my favorite type of assignments is audio!  Lyrics and songs are great ways to tell stories. Have you notice similar themes extend genres… lyrics overlapping. Your task is to create a story by using audio snippets from songs. The trick is you have to have the last word of your clip, be the same word that starts the next clip. Use at least 5 different songs, try to include different genres or decades.

  1. Find all the YouTube videos of your songs and position it to play a little before the part you want to capture.
  2. Use Audacity to record the clips
  3. Edit the Clips Together
  4. Export Your New Story

For my example I used:

Below is the lyrics of my music tag.. the word/pharses that are shared are bolded.

Why don’t you stay. I’m down on my knees. I’m so tired of being lonely. Don’t I give you what you need. When she calls you to go. There is one thing you should know. We don’t have to live this way Baby, why don’t you stay Just a  little bit longer .Please let me hear .You say that you will Say you will. Say you will. Together can never be close enough for me. To feel like I am close enough to youYou wear white and I’ll wear out the words I love you. Andyou’re beautiful. You’re beautiful, You’re beauitful its true. There must be an angel with the smile on her face, when she thought up that I should be with you need a man. I need a man. Who can keep me satisfied. I better shape up If I’m gonna prove. you better prove. That my faith is justified. Are you sure.Y es I’m sure down deep inside. You’re the one that I want. Oo-oo-oo, honey

I believe songs are the most unviersal way to tell stories. It, therefore, isn’t surprisng that songs tend to overlap. This assigment made me think of all the themes (not just genres) that I listen too! I, also, shows the connectivness of people acrosse time.

For my second assingment, I chose to do a video or maybe a mash-up assignment. I called it video because originally I believed it to be video. However, after writting up a post about it… I reconsidered… it is called Music Video. The assignment can be found here.

I love video and audio, so I combined these two mediums in video form. The goal was to create a Music Video using clips from a movie. Music videos are musics companion in telling stories. I personally perfer music videos becasue I can visualize the lyrics better. For my example, I used The Notebook a movie based on Nicolas Spark’s book and “Hey Pretty Girl”by Kip Moore.

I believe the storyline in the The Notebook is greatly reflected in the the song “Hey Pretty Girl”. Both types of story are about falling in love with a pretty girl, becoming a family, and living out the rest of their lives together The two combined truly enhance the story.

Note: I think was truly makes this a music video is the shots of Kip Moore sing….just like iin the  real video :)

Smokey the Bears

Mashedup Children’s Book

“Mashup a children’s book based on another cultural artifact.”

I decided to mash the Bearenstain Bears with Smokey the Bear in a children’s book cover:

I made this remix by finding a picture of the Bearenstain Bears on google (which I referanced above) uploading it in Picasa, editing it with the Picnik software in Picasa to create the flames and fire hose and then adding the text with the Picasa editor.

When I saw this assignment in the assignment bank I liked the examples on the college humor website but had trouble thinking of a childrens book and cultural artifact to mash up myself.. so I googled children’s books and tried to think of well known figures I could relate them to. This is what I came up with! It turned out better then I expected it to, my computer is not the most cooperative drawing with paint.

I think this would actually become a good children’s book if someone wanted to write it. The Bearenstain (Smokey) Bears could be like the town firefighters teaching people about fire prevention!

McLovin’

Consumer Mashup

“Think of anyplace you spend money, and what you most often buy at that place. “

I mashed McDonalds logo and it’s delicious coffee:
I LOVE the mornings I can get myself out of bed 5 minutes early to stop at McDonald’s for coffee before class. I’ve never been much of a caffeine junky, but this semester I think I’ve entered adulthood and needed it more mornings then not.

I made this mash up by finding the McDonalds logo and coffee through google (links above) putting both pictures in Microsoft Word, changing the M’s settings to be behind text and the coffee settings to be in front of text. Then I played on the slogan “i’m lovin’ it” with “coffee lovin’” by typing the phrase and then taking a screen shot of the new logo.

One Move Watches Another

The purpose of this assignment was to combine two movie scenes in which one scene looks as if it is watching the other movie scene. After completing the project it came out pretty realistic as if she was watching the movie. The two movies I chose were from Saving Private Ryan and The Fifth Element. I’m sure if you seen both movies then this movie mashup would make quite the impression. To complete the project I used the program iMovie on the mac to cut up the scenes and edit them. I downloaded the clips off from youtube.

The Importance of friends

Recycle the Media

“Your task for this assignment is to Mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types (e.g. audio and image, image and video. The story most likely would be done as a video, but see if you can make these different kinds of media make sense as the content. What kind of recycled story can you make out if this cast off media.”

I used Recycle the Media as part of my 7 star worth of assignments. For this assignment I first went to the minus.com  and selected 10 different pieces of recycled media. I wanted to make a story out of images and audio, therefore I chose the audio and video formats.

Since friendship provides orientation in our life, life surrounded with good friends is a life in the heaven. Therefore, the video I created is about the importance of true friend in our life. After selected the images and audio, I used Windows live movie maker for editing them. I used subtitles for telling the story behind the images. The background music was called lantern_fest ; I chose this sound effect because it was going well with the images I chose.

The importance of true Friends:

I really enjoyed creating this assignment, since it was very fun to do. Secondly, it was good to see other students recycled medias .

Hunting Bambi ***

Mash-Up Those Movies ***

bambi

deer hunting

deer 2

I took the two original movie posters and mashed them up, in order to create a new story. My movie is about the hunting of Bambi’s mother, a untold story until now! I used Paint to cut and paste the Bambi into the Hunting White-Tail Deer poster.  In the end,  the stories were similar in that both are about white-tailed deer, but completely different genres.  I used Flickr to embed the picture into my blog.
