YOU BELONG TO THE BREAKFAST CLUB

? Still don’t know where you’re going
Your still just a face in the crowd
You belong to the breakfast club
You belong to the goonies
Living in a river of darkness beneath the neon light
You were born in the club ?

Glenn “Melody” Frey

It’s mashup week at Ds106, and for my first assignment, I chose to do This Doesn’t Belong Here! Details for this assignment are as follows:

“For this assignment you need to mash up two different iconic movie scenes. However, you should aim to be as subtle as possible. Perhaps a famous prop that simply doesn’t belong or a character that looks a little out of place.”

Starting out, I knew that I wanted to take something I’ve already done before and use it for this mashup. I just did mashup videos of ‘The Goonies’ and ‘The Breakfast Club,’ so naturally the next step would be to mashup the two movies directly. I chose ‘The Breakfast Club’ as my base and ‘The Goonies’ for props, because I felt that I could more easily place an object within the open environment of ‘The Breakfast Club,’ and also because ‘The Goonies’ has more unique props. ‘The Breakfast Club’ is mostly a character driven story; there aren’t many unique items that would be recognizable as having come from ‘The Breakfast Club’ that the characters aren’t wearing.

I scrubbed through my scenes and picked out a few options, but ultimately decided on a still of Allison. I liked the fact that there was a lot of desk surface showing on which to place objects, and I also liked the placement of the characters. This frame is a painting. It just looks nicely balanced because this frame is utilizing the rule of thirds.

Going back to ‘The Goonies,’ I similarly scrubbed through my scenes to find objects that weren’t too blurry or obscured by the characters. I decided on a lantern, a bowl of marbles, and the ship at the end credits. Once I had screenshots of everything, I headed on over to Photoshop.

In Ps, I cut and paste my objects onto my base layer and erased extraneous background image from my objects. I played with scale and placement (the bowl and lantern are easy to pick out, but I made the ship very small/subtle on the background desk). Next, I used the warp tool on the bowl of marbles, since it was sitting at a different angle in ‘The Goonies.’ Finally, I did some gaussian blurs on my objects and changed the hue and light values to better match the ‘The Breakfast Club’ environment of florescent lighting.

My final mashup:

Surprisingly, the addition of these objects-that-don’t-belong completely change the tone of this frame. Before, Allison appeared as a background character (since our attention was being drawn to what’s happening behind her), but now Allison truly feels like she’s in the foreground. The objects block out John, and as a result, our attention becomes focused on Allison. She looks deep in thought rather than someone who is avoiding confrontation. She looks like she belongs in the frame.

Hellraiser under tha seaaaaaa

This is one of my favorite assignments, for this you had to mashup two different movie trailers. I figured I would take some gruesome movie and pair it with childrens movie audio or vice versa. Eventually I settled on Hellraiser and The Little Mermaid.

I kept cutting clips and moving them to fit with all the small jump scares in the audio which was almost perfect. The last 30 seconds of the video almost made itself without me doing anything to it. I cut so many clips from the back half of the video that every scene was moving fast enough to seem scary with trailer audio.

A Wolf In Sheeps Clothing

For this assignment I was tasked with combining two rival companies logos. I’m a fan of Microsoft and I’m against almost anything Apple makes so I thought it’d be a good idea to mash the two logos together. It makes Apples logo look a little better.

DS106 Projects and Me!

Something to know about me is that when I see something and I really like it, then I want to learn how to make it. When I saw different assignments on DS106, it made me want to try to create some of the projects that I found interesting and cool. That’s when I had to step back for second because I knew that I will not be able to create them without some assistance. I was really frustrated and annoyed but hopefully, I will learn how to create these assignments and gain the skills that are necessary to create these two assignments:  I found this Disney Mashup from the Mashup Assignment and thought it was really beautiful and brought some childhood memories.
I believe this assignment would be tough and more complicated since one of my friends tried to follow the steps to create this and it was a mess. Since I am not familiar with the concepts of typography and silhouetted, I loved to familiarize myself.

Two projects that I think I am capable of doing are: Visual Assignment “Places of Peace” which is like using different pictures to create a collage.

Visual Assignments “Who Said What”

I am soo excited! Can not wait to explore my creative side!

Everybody REALLY Wants to Rule the World

I knew I wanted to make at least one mashup this week. I was originally trying to do a true mashup or remix, but this was my first time ever working with audio and using Audacity and I realized how difficult and unfamiliar it is to me. I’ll explain more in my weekly summary, but I now present, Everybody Really Wants to Rule the World, a mix of the original song from the 80s by Tears for Fears, a cover-band called Ninja Sex Party, and the popular yet edgy pop singer, Lorde.

It switches to the NSP at around .55 seconds, and then shifts to the Lorde version around 1:30 and plays the rest of the way through. Since I already spent hours attempting to mash up other songs together which led to me having nothing to show, I decided to pick this assignment which called for me to blend an original song with covers of the same song. This way, I felt like I can just focus on the transitions between them.

I didn’t want to upload this one on SoundCloud because they would probably take it down, so I uploaded it directly! The original version of this song is very similar to the NSP version, but I still had a hard time blending them seamlessly. I tried adding fade effects so they could overlap slightly and make the transition slightly softer, but it still didn’t turn out exactly how I wanted it to. Shockingly, the more interesting transition came with the Lorde version. I chose the bridge for this version to come in because I thought it would emphasize the differences between this one and the others.

The Lorde version is drastically different from the others, which adds an interesting, darker spin on the original song as well as NSP’s cover. I honestly didn’t like this version at first, but it actually grew on me a bunch! Maybe one day I will figure out how to effectively mash up songs besides just transitions, but that day is not today. This assignment was worth four stars which finishes my week at fifteen stars I think.

80’s Sounds

This assignment was a lot of fun I had to pick my favorite sounds and mash them up together to see what they made. I decided to pull in the 80’s theme here with my sounds. I included some engines that were from the 80’s and thought about what cities in different countries would sound like when before they became big cities so I was able to include different animal sounds as well.

I downloaded 5 sounds that make me feel good and put them into audacity edited them to fade in and out, silence different sections to give other sounds solos and mashed them all up together to come up with an about 30 second clip of pleasant 80’s sounds. The inspiration was definitely 80’s for me an thinking what kinds of things my parents heard growing up compared to what I knew growing up. This was a fun assignment that I enjoyed making and think I did a good job with because I am happy with how it turned out.

Half and Half

For this audio assignment called “going halfsies” was really fun to do considering I immediately knew what song I wanted to do which also went with our 80’s theme!

I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight by Cutting Crew is a pretty popular 80’s song with many covers of it already done- BUT Lakyn Heperi, and Australian singer, covered the song nearly 7 years ago and the first time I heard his cover I fell in love with it.

The cover is different in a way that slows down the song to a haunting desperate melody- truly beautiful. I put each side by side in my audio post to Soundcloud just to show the true difference.

For this assignment I needed both songs the original and the cover and I used the iPhone recording app to mash them.

A morning commute

For this audio sound effects story assignment I decided to take clips from Freesound to make a mash up of sounds that told the story of a morning commute.

First we have the person taking out their keys, they then lock their door behind them and begin their walk. They walk through a neighborhood with a few passing cars and a dog that barks. We can hear the birds around them. They get to the train station and get on the train to go to work.

I thought that I would do a morning commute effects story because when I commute to classes I always find that even when I’m not talking or listening to music, there are always sounds around me.

For this assignment I just needed the Freesound website and my phone. I was able to edit the sounds together on my phone using the recording app. I then uploaded it to Soundcloud!

Disney… Why not?

Who doesn’t love Disney to begin with? I grew up watching Disney and still love most of their movies. This assignment I created was Disney lyric mash up worth 4 stars. This was to take different Disney songs and sayings and mush them together to create something new. I really enjoyed this assignment and getting to play around with Disney songs never hurt. I decided to pick only songs that were around in the 80’s or came out during that time frame. The inspiration came from googling Disney songs in the 80’s and picking the ones I like the most or sayings.

I decided to use:

  • “Kiss a Girl” from Little Mermaid (’89)
  • “Under the Sea” Little Mermaid (’89)
  • Honey I Shrunk the Kids (’89)
  • “Best of Friends” Fox and the Hound (’81)
  • Popeye The sailor Man (’80)
  • I do not own any of the rights to these songs or words!

I spent probably more time than most on this assignment trying to make it perfect where people could tell where things were coming from but they were different enough that I don’t get in trouble with copyright. I think I did a good job with this mash up and got to learn even more about layering sounds in audacity and changing them around while listening the what I wanted them to sound like. I was able to make it 20 secs about without repeating the same order, I did repeat certain parts of different sounds throughout. I would use the envelope, and play around with different pitches, speeds, tempo, and other effects audacity has to offer. It was fun moving the sound around and coping certain ones to put on repeat. I also enjoyed finding Disney songs from the 80’s to use in this mash up.

D.C. Sounds

For this assignment, for 4 stars, I did the “Create a Place” audio assignment. We had to mashup a bunch of sounds in order to create a place. For mine, I wanted to choose D.C. because that’s where I spend a lot of time. For the audio, I included a lot of metro door closing sounds, car horns, traffic sounds, and rally sounds. I thought this was fitting considering it is a very crowded city that is very politically focused. I made it on audacity, and then copy and pasted a lot of the sounds to make it more interesting throughout the clip. I got the sounds on Free Sounds.org and it was really easy to download and compress the different audios. Hope you enjoy!
