Final Summary

My final story is the Studio Ghibli Lawsuit! I chose this route because I am a huge Studio Ghibli fan. I’ve seen every single movie multiple times and Spirited Away is my favorite! I was married in 2001, when this movie first came out. My son was born in 2003. Many late nights, when my infant son wouldn’t sleep, Spirited Away entertained me.

When I first saw the prompt for this final, I wanted to do a real story about me. But, the prompt was clear that it must be about someone fictional. I struggled with this because it didn’t really fit with the heart of my blog. In the end, I found a workaround by still focusing on something dear to me.

While this assignment required the most work, it was the most fun. Once I had my idea, it didn’t take long to gather what I needed and create a full world around this theme of neglectful Studio Ghibli parents. Imagine my surprise when I looked online and saw that others had done videos about this topic as well! The one that I watched was called All of the Adults in Ponyo are the WORST!

This is where I got the idea to use a Bitmoji for myself instead of shooting video. I don’t really have the resources to do video the way I want at home, so this was a good workaround. I got tonsillitis this week and found my throat hurt, so using an AI voice was a great alternative. I’ve wanted to use AI for a while and I truly enjoyed trying it out. Though, it’s very difficult to find good AI sites which offer free downloads of the material you create. This part took the longest out of everything. AI is not perfect, pronunciation is difficult, and I found that AI is equal parts smart and stupid!

In addition, see my Youtube video below.

I also created two audio files. One was a fake radio newscast. The other were sound effects of No Face attacking the bath house where Chihiro worked.

For the newscast, I created an assignment for the DS106 assignment bank. I know we didn’t have to connect our work to assignments, but I thought it might be fun to create an assignment anyway. When I started this course, I said I’d never do that. But, I did! It was easy to create the assignment after I had already done the work. In fact, it was rather anticlimactic. You can see the assignment below.

All of the previous weeks’ resources put me in a good place to create these materials quickly and fairly well. I’m most proud of the news report. The No Face one was a challenge and I used about 15 sounds to get the full effect of a busy place filled with food, dishes, and people being attacked by a monster. Even though I attempted to not evenly space the sounds out, they still have a rhythmic quality about them which makes the audio lose some of its authenticity. I guess I still need to do some work to improve in this area. In the future, I hope to try making my own audio using GarageBand or some other app.

I also created two visual items. One is the class action lawsuit visual and the other is the heartbreaking Studio Ghibli children visual. These were probably the hardest for me. You can definitely tell that the quality isn’t amazing.

Studio Ghibli Endangered Children

I used Adobe Express, which has become my favorite program for creating quick and professional looking art. I also used Adobe Express to create the intro image for my Youtube video on this assignment. There is still a lot I have to learn about that program though. For these images, I had to remove the backgrounds from most of the pictures. That was pretty easy and something I had never done until this class. I had to alter the contrast, brightness, etc., because most of the Ghibli characters have light outlines and neutral colors. These faded into the background. I tried to keep in mind the ideas from the color theory lessons. Design is not my strong point though. I’m very picky and often programs don’t quite have what I want. Regardless, I stand by these as part of the “lawsuit world” I created.

Finally, I did something that wasn’t required. Using Google Forms, I created a petition for justice for the Studio Ghibli children. This is a real form. People can actually sign up. And it includes links to my Youtube channel and blog so that people can follow the story. I thought it added a touch of realism.

Sign the petition! Haha! I tried to sprinkle in other media to make it realistic such as the links to a federal site about child endangerment, and the trailer for Spirited Away. I don’t know if these added to the realism or not, but I felt like they did.

During this project, I realized that it’s possible to create your own hype around any topic you wish. You just have to be smart in your decisions. Using Studio Ghibli as a title for my works has already gotten me views and followers on various platforms. The fake newscast I created has already been shared by someone and I gained a follower on it! Surprise, surprise. I wasn’t expecting it at all since this is a class assignment. I was very careful to make sure the description shows these items are part of fan fiction because I don’t want to be sued by Studio Ghibli or Hayao Miyazaki. That’s not how I want to be connected with this amazing company.

If you happen on this blog, Miyazaki san, I love your work. You’re an outstanding storyteller! I can’t wait to see your new movie, ‘How Do You Live? One day I hope to learn how you manage to create so much hype by not telling anyone what this movie is about and by not creating any trailers to advertise it. Amazing!

Through this course, especially this final assignment, I gained insight into how social media works. I realize the potential I have to create a story and “sell” it to others, even if that story isn’t true. So, with great power comes great responsibility, right? Hopefully, I can use these skills to further my career and assist people with telling the stories of their historic preservation efforts. I also plan to use these skills in my personal storytelling since I have to keep a vlog of my activities during my study abroad trip in Paris, France next month.

If there was anything I would do differently for this course, I would really push myself more to use video that I recorded. While I have a new camera, I am not fully competent with it at all. I’ve been practicing, but I am definitely an amateur. The course moved so quickly that I could rarely formulate a vision in my mind for each assignment before it was due. That is challenging. But, at least I know what how to use video when I’m ready. I’ve already started to put in place small things that will make me more successful when I decide to seriously create content.

This course was challenging and fun. Thank you for the free resources!

Spooky Sound

This is a mash-up between a guitar and a piano to make a spooky sound. Reminds me of a horror video game audio that is the character waiting in a lobby or the home screen of the game waiting to start. It gives off the vibe that things are building up to a point of a jump scare.

A Bit Creepy

Assignment: Spooky Sounds
For this assignment, make an audio track using found sounds or your own recordings that is creepy, spooky, scary, halloween-inspired. Make it more than a minute long so we have time to get scared!

So! I was browsing the audio assignments and I saw one that caught my eyes. It was the ‘Sick Beats’ assignment and I already had a cool sound in my head, BUT like many of creative ventures, it didn’t go as planned. Before I knew it I was making a creepy and eerie sound and I had to finish it. This was one of my favorite assignments so far! So, here is my kinda spooky little audio! Enjoy~~~

How It Works:
1.) I opened Audacity and clicked on new (on the files tab)
2.) I went to freesound.org and got all my sounds from there
3.) I liked many of the sounds but I picked only 5:
a.) https://freesound.org/people/googlekatclaire/sounds/505213/
b.) https://freesound.org/people/Mellau/sounds/505667/
c.) https://freesound.org/people/viznoman/sounds/267307/
d.) https://freesound.org/people/AmeAngelofSin/sounds/165597/
e.) https://freesound.org/people/MelvinJaepel/sounds/435468/

4.) I then imported all the audio one by one (files>import)
5.) once I had all the audio samples, I began to move and cut parts of the sounds where I thought fit best. (To cut: select track> edit>clip boundaries>split; To Move: On top there, under analyze, there is a two-headed arrow, click it but make sure to have the desired track selected)

Listen to at Your Own Risk

for my other audio assignments I did Spooky Sounds, which was to create to an audio of spooky sounds. Rated 4 1/2 Stars.

For this assignment I thought all the way back to when I was little during Halloween times. I thought about the different sounds I would hear when I went out for trick o treating or when I went to haunted houses. I gathered different sounds from the Free Sound website, then I used Audacity to edit and turn up the bass on some of them. T’his was a fun project to create because ‘Halloween was one the holiday’s that I really loved growing up so this project let me reminisce my memories from when I was a kid.

I thought it would be interesting to research on how Halloween was like in the 80’s and found some pretty interesting things. Some popular costumes were Pac-man, Superman costume, Care bears costumes. Many people shared their stories on how Halloween was in the 80’s. Many said Trick o treating times lasted longer, where you could go to many houses. I remember when I was little I would go trick o treating for about an hour and then it would be late and it would be time to go home. Also many people made their own costumes and decorations instead of buying them, which most people do now. Halloween was just one night event that would happen on Halloween night. But now a days we see the whole month of October and even November filled with Halloween themed events. Halloween is different from what it was in the 80’s.

Get Scared

This assignment I chose is called Spooky Sounds where you must combine scary sound effects together for at least one minute in length of audio to make a scary track. I got all of my sound effects for this assignment from BBC Sound Effects. This assignment was not to difficult other than the fact that I struggled with getting scary sounds and trying to compile them together to create suspense and actually scare the listener. I hope that my track is scary enough. Overall, I enjoyed getting to create something suspenseful and scary. I do not know if it is that scary, but I might just be saying that because I am the one who made the scary track. Also, I can find scary tracks funny sometimes. Anyways, listen to my scary track below, let me know what you think, and I hope you get scared!

Enjoy listening to these scary sounds!

Happy Birthday

For this assignment I mixed a pretty creepy Happy Birthday song. So listen if you dare ?

Spooky Sounds – Don’t Listen at Night

An assignment I did this week was to make a minute or more remix of a bunch of spooky sounds. To do this I recorded a bunch of different spooky sounds or songs that I know from YouTube and I compiled them all into one sound editing app to fit altogether! I added a cute / scary little picture to hold as a caption picture while the music plays in the background. Essentially, it’s just a huge mix of sounds that’ll scare you. I really wish I didn’t do this at night because now I’m scared to sleep lol. Compiling the sounds was a little hard because I’m a rookie at sound editing, but I did it. It may not be perfect, but I’m happy with how it turned out. Look below to see my post! (4.5 stars):

My Halloween Sound

For this assignment I created a spooky/scary beat or song, however you want to describe it. For this I used some at home recordings as well as some audio clips from freesound.org and plugged them into audacity where I edited and trimmed the files into one whole recording. The process was really fun as I had to try and come up with creepy sounds and noises in order to make the best spooky song I could. The process was not to difficult and I really didn’t need to much inspiration as Halloween is right around the corner. Overall I am very happy with how it turned out and happy early Halloween.

Haunted Advertisements

For my first assignment this week I chose to alter the 4.5 star spooky sounds assignment to create a commercial for my groups radio show.

This assignment technically says create a spooky soundtrack using only sounds. However, I altered it slightly so that I could make a commercial out of it. I tried to use as little dialogue as possible in order to stick to the root of the assignment. I took sounds from freesounds, org and recording of my own voice to creat this commercial. Since it’s October I thought it would be fun to create a haunted house ad. I named the house after one of my group members character to try and draw it into the class topic as well. I also thought it was a nice twist in her character is based on Black Dahlia. I had one scary soundtrack throughout the whole commercial and added other layers. I included two evil laughs, one normal and one more clown-like in honor of It’s recent debut. Also, I think clown make most people at the very least uncomfortable if not outright scared. Towards the end I add a violin (as they can be very creepy) and a short pause to make people think it’s the end before scaring them with a scream. Then I added a quick audio file of the haunted house information to make it more like a commercial. I had some trouble to spacing I plan to work on next week to make it better for the actual radio show, but I think it sounds pretty creepy now.

Spooky Halloween Track

For four and a half stars of audio assignments I created a spooky Halloween track. I first tried to “set the stage” by having spooky music play in the background and a thunderstorm starting. I used footsteps to introduce someone to the story. The heavy steps walking with purpose were meant to be the assailant. Then I introduced a second person who was obviously scared. I did this through a heavy heartbeat. I imagined that person hiding in a place where they can hear the assailant coming and then eventually see them when they were close enough to hear them breathe. Then the attack occurred and the assailant succeeded.
