Favorite Song Guess

For this assignment I was to remove the lyrics from one of my favorite songs and upload it to soundcloud so other DS106 students may guess the song. Only the first 30 seconds of the song were to be used.  Warning! Song spoiler at end of post.

This isn’t necessarily my all time favorite song, however during the summer you can bet your buns that I’m listening to this in the summer, cruising with the windows down listening to southern rock (hint) in my 4×4. A friend had gotten me into the genre a few years ago and I’ve been hooked since. Weirdly enough, I love this kind of music, anything from southern rock to indie folk but I just can’t get into country, especially modern pop country.

It is quite difficult to get all the voice and lyrics out of a song. The best way would just to start from an instrumental version, however that seemed like cheating. Audacity has a two built in functions to remove voice and decided to try and use them. I first tried to use both of them together because obviously more is better and it practically removed all the audio. I then just decided to use one and mess around with the volumes to make it sound better. There is still some residual vocals in the background but I’m not a sound engineer or an audiophile so it passed my litmus test.

Let’s Play a Guessing Game

Archives

For this assignment, I had to pick one of my favorite songs, remove the lyrics from it, and then create a 30 second clip of the music. The goal is for people to be able to guess what song it is.

I won’t tell you what song I chose obviously but I will tell you it’s a country pop song. I honestly have no idea how to remove the words from a song, despite all my playing around on Audacity so I had to find an instrumental version of it on YouTube. Luckily you can find just about anything on there so that wasn’t too hard! Then I used SoundCloud to record the short clip. Here’s the finished product, can you guess what song it is?!

“Name the Song”

For the second assignment I choose to do ” favorite song” which was rated 3 1/2 stars. This brings my required 12 stars of audio assignments to 6 1/2 stars. This assignment was to pick a song but also taking the lyrics out and record 30 seconds of the revised song. Then people had to guess the song that I picked. I have a lot favorite songs so it was hard to choose one that I like and also easy enough that people would guess the song. I ended up choosing an old song that I believe that some people would get. Once again I have no knowledge on how to remove the lyrics from a song so I went to YouTube and recorded 29 seconds of the song. I had to convert the video on my phone to mp3 and then I could upload it to Soundcloud. I know I say this a lot but I really like the results. So in closing,  Name the Song!

Name That Song!

For this assignment, we had to pick a song, take the lyrics out, and record a short (30 seconds or less) audio clip. The clip needed to be enough that people would be able to guess the song from it. I’ll be honest, a big part of why I chose this particular assignment is because it seemed like one of the few in this category that I was capable of doing. Not to give any hints, but I also thought it would be a good assignment to use to tie in the “mission106” theme!

The hardest part was trying to pick a song! Once I decided on the theme, it wasn’t too bad. I chose my song and proceeded to try and find an instrumental version on  YouTube(I’m sure there is a way to simply removes the words from the actual song but I’m just not that tech savvy!).

I ended up pulling the track up on my phone and playing it while I used SoundCloud on my computer to record the clip. I did end up recording a full 30 seconds because once I started it, I realized it might be a hard one to guess if you’ve never seen the movie that made it popular. In the end, I think it came out pretty well.

Here’s the finished product!

Guess This Song

For the Favorite Song Assignment, I’m suppose to choose my favorite song, remove the vocals, and see if people can guess the song by listening to only 30 seconds of the song. Choosing which song is my favorite is nearly impossible for me, so I chose a song that I have been very fond of for a long time. Unless you are a hardcore fan of a certain 90’s rock band, I doubt you’ll be able to figure out what song this is. Give it a shot!

I used audacity to remove the vocals from the song. I could have just found the instrumental version on Youtube, but I think that would be cheating. It’s simple, I just used “Voice Remover” under “Effects”. Boom. Project done.

Here’s the actual song.

No Lyrics

???½

For my last assignment, I did the Favorite Song assignment. I have a handful of songs that I like more than the others on any given day, so I don’t really have a single favourite; it’s more like a set of favourites. Either way, I chose one of the songs from that set and tried two ways to remove the lyrics from the song. After removing the lyrics, I cut the songs down to 30 seconds. To be specific, I cut them down to the last 30 seconds. I won’t even try uploading these to SoundCloud, since my internet’s being slow and they’ll probably be taken down for copyright anyways. So yeah, two ways I removed lyrics:

The first way was really simple. Audacity has a function to automatically remove vocals. I highlighted the entire song, clicked the button, and boom, I got a version without any lyrics. It made the song sound a bit shriller and higher-pitched than normal, though. It also left behind some of the lyrics, which you might be able to hear in the background. It still sounds pretty decent, though:

The second way was a bit more involved, but I spent some time searching around on the internet, and found this nice tutorial. One I found that, it wasn’t too difficult to get rid of the lyrics. I had to fiddle around with the tracks, and had to make it mono instead of stereo, but I think it ends up sounding a bit less shrill/choppy than the auto-removed lyrics version. It also didn’t leave behind nearly as much of the vocals:

If you want to hear the entire song without lyrics, here’s the full auto-removed version:

And the full manually-removed version:

I Don’t Think You Can Guess

For this assignment, Favorite Song, the action was to take your favorite song, and remove the lyrics. Since the assignment said to use one of your favorite song I decided to use my actual #1 favorite song. You were also suppose to play only around 30 seconds of it so people could guess what song it is. However, since I HIGHLY doubt anyone could guess what song it is, I decided to include the whole song. I don’t think people could guess what it is since it’s not that popular of a song, not because it is poor quality. But, good luck trying to guess anyway. (Also, below the song I included a link to what the song actually is.)

This is what the song actually is. (DON’T CLICK UNTIL YOU GIVE UP)

What I did to (sort of) get rid of the lyrics was, I used Audacity. I tried several songs, but I think this is the one that turned out the best. I opened the song, clicked “Effects” and selected “Vocal Remover”. I also played with what frequencies worked the best, and this was the best I could do since I am still new to the audio world…Anyway, after that I cropped the beginning of the song so there wouldn’t be like 30 second of silence at the beginning. Then I just exported the song and uploaded it to Soundcloud.

Can You Guess This Song?

Hmmm can you guys guess my favorite song of all time?!

Reverse What Lyrics?

For the Audio assignment this week I struggled. First I downloaded Audacity because most assignments had it in the description. I then chose Audio Assignments 1446 Favorite Song as the assignment I was going to attempt. Attempt being the keyword.

I pick a song and and followed these instructions. They gave the reader a step by step way to remove lyrics. I followed them and it muted the lyrics but they were not fully erased. I tried on multiple songs all ending the same way the vocals were just muted. Here is one of the many songs I tried it on.  After hours of struggle I decided to try something different.

The next assignment I chose was the Reverse Audio Quiz Audio Assignments 1332. I uploaded a track onto Audacity and followed these instructions. I was able to do this one!!!!!  Because I was able to do this one I did two different songs. So here is your quiz can you guess these two songs? They are in reverse. Hint the titles are clues!

  1. R and R
  2. How Many Ways

What is Music Without Lyrics?

Favorite Song

Take your favorite song. Remove the lyrics. Play only up to thirty seconds of the song. Listener must be able to guess.

Audio in all honesty is kicking my ass.  I’m super interested in audio and find it fascinating, however as I have continued to work with it this week I have realized it is not something that I am naturally strong in by any means. As with a lot of different free programs Audacity is not the most user friendly software.  I had a very difficult time uploading my finished audio clip to anything.  SoundCloud wouldn’t let me upload the clip because it caught the Copyright of the song and then when I tried to directly upload the audio clip to WordPress I received an error message and it wouldn’t allow me to upload it.  Because of all those obstacles I decided that the easiest way to embed the audio in my blog would be to just upload it to Youtube and then embed it into this post.

I labeled the song 1996 because that was the year it came out.  I have quite the affinity for late 90s alternative.  I feel like everyone should be able to guess this song, especially if you had older siblings.

To Start I imported the mp3 into Audacity.

import

I then Clicked on the drop down menu circle in this photograph and clicked split the stereo track

drop menu

I then clicked on the top track and then went to the effect menu (circled here) and clicked inverse

Inverse

I then trimmed down the audio to 30 second by selecting the portion I wanted and then used ctrl-t to trim everything else that wasn’t selected.

trim

After the top track was trimmed I changed both audio to tracks to mono in the drop down menu circled.

mono

Finally I exported the audio to my desktop. When using SoundCloud or importing straight onto WordPress didn’t work I used an online movie maker Kizoa.

I uploaded all of the screenshots of my process to run as a slideshow

I went to music and then to my music at the bottom left and uploaded my mp3 clips

I then put the photos in order by putting them in the slides at the bottom

I then clicked the save button

I decided to just have the software upload the video to Youtube rather than downloading it and then re-uploading it to YouTube.

I then embedded the Youtube Video into this post.
