SURROUND SOUND… Indoor Concert Venue

So this was a daunting assignment. I was overwhelmed mainly because there was no blunt tutorial on how to use Audacity and the steps that follow to make the assignment for the 5 sound story. But, using my resources, I looked at the DS106 Handbook and found out how to layer sounds and use Audacity in general. Once I watched that, I was able to put all of the clips together and tweak everything just the way I wanted.

I searched for sound effects on freesounds and saved those to a file. Once in Audacity, I imported all of the audio files into the program. I deleted portions of the clips, moved them around, and pieced everything together the way I wanted it.

Here’s how it ended up:

The story is that a woman is going to a concert. She’s walking down the street outside, and her heels are hitting the sidewalk, she opens the door to the concert and immediately she’s drawn into the noise of the crowd. She hears the soundcheck going on and then the roar and applause of the crowd as the performer takes the stage and begins to play.

Coffee Shop Sound Effects

This was an interesting assignment! While trying to find some tunes for my bumper, I tried a couple keywords related to “coffee,” I was looking for some smooth jazz or acoustic performance, but I realized that there was a wealth of clips related to the drink itself, so I hobbled together a handful (these: 1, 2, 3 and 4) and here’s what we have. It was kind of cool trying to “place” these activities by playing with the volume levels, what’s happening close to the audience and whats far. I kind of played it as if the listener was the person purchasing and drinking the coffee, I hope that comes through.

Sound Story

I created a story with 5 sounds I hope that you enjoy it took me a few days to even decide what I was going to do.

Selective Hearing

This is a sound effect story, created by yours truly. These are the various sounds I hear throughout my house because our house is old, and the walls are paper thin. Good thing I’m a heavy sleeper. I used sound effects from freesound, and audacity to layer them all together. It was a fairly simple process once I figured out all the tools. I really like the way it turned out. It has a selective hearing feel to it as it shifts from the noises that I can hear inside to the noises I prefer to hear outside (the crickets, and the cars passing by). I used five different sounds: floor creaking, people chattering, dishes being done, cars passing by, and a symphony of crickets. The floor creaking is my roommate that lives above me, she walks on her heels, which means the floor is always creaking. The people chattering/the dishes being washed is the sound of my other roommate and her boyfriend making a midnight snack in the kitchen. They do this all the time. And the crickets and the car passing are the sounds I can hear coming from the outside. (Yes, I can hear ALL of the things.)

Dino Attack (in Sound)

This one was pretty fun, making a short audio clip telling a story in nothing but sound effects. I got all these effects from freesounds. I didn’t know what I was going to do at first but then I remembered doing the 5card draw story telling thing which gave me the idea of making an audio version of that story. Finding the sounds that I liked for the story was difficult. Its like having what you want in your head but you can never quite figure out how to get it out into the world. I was pleased with the results though.

Five Sound Story

My five sounds: rain, thunder, birds, children playing, puddles splashing

It’s a raining day- no just any rainy day… its pouring and there is thunder! You are a child..disappointed, upset, dying for the rain to stop so you can play outside. Then, the thunder gets quieter, bird start chirping, and the sun comes out. You and your sibling rush outside to play, ignoring the fact that your shoes are soaked from the puddles.

Sound Effects Story

This summer, we had more crazy weather in Virginia than any other summer I can remember. Near the end of June, there was an awful storm that spawned tornadoes and hail near my house.  I made a sound effects story with what I heard in Audacity. I used freesound.org, which has marvelous sound effects ready to use. The five sounds I chose were chimes, hail, thunder, a tree falling, and rain.  I remember being petrified in the basement, hearing all these noises and not really knowing what was going on outside. It’s a scary feeling.

here’s the story:

The beach……..sound effect story

My friend Alex wanted to go to the beach this weekend but couldn’t so I made this for her to listen to so she could feel as if she was at the beach even though she was not. To create the sound effect story I found clips on freesounds.org and downloaded them.  After downloading them I edited them on audacity.

Goodmorning Sunshine!

Like many of our ds106 assignments, I was very skeptical about the sound effect story assignment, but I ended up having a lot of fun with it! This assignment really made me feel so much more comfortable using audacity. I found all of my sound effects on freesound.org. I downloaded the sound effects in the order that I wanted to tell my story in. Then I loaded them and trimmed them down one by one using Audacity. I played around with it for a while until I had a final product I was happy with.

I thought forever about what to do my sound effect story about, I wanted to do something that involved a lot of sounds (obviously). I decided to create a story of someone’s typical morning. I believe I used about 10 different sound effects. My story begins with someone snoring, then an alarm going off. Next you can hear someone rolling out of bed and walking to the bathroom. They take a shower, then they pull back the shower curtain and flush the toilet. It amazes me how sound effects can tell a story. I think my view of digital storytelling has finally changed! IT IS SO FREAKING AWESOME!

Who Left The Door Open? (sound effect story)

In the spirit of Doing the Work We Assign Our ds106 Students, I just made my own Sound Effect Story- the assignment as stated:

Tell a story using nothing but sound effects. There can be no verbal communication, only sound effects. Use at least five different sounds that you find online. The story can be no longer than 90 seconds.

I’ve done this one twice before, one a story of keys another of something that might have happened while walking in the woods.

For this one I tried to do something that has an action and maybe an ambiguous ending. If you own a pet, its likely you have something that happened when someone left a door open. And I have my own tale of a dog that was lost… For anyone that has dealt with a lost dog, sorry. I hope it is the story (like mine) where he/she returns.

Here we go.

This was created in my usual audio tool, Audacity and using sounds from my favorite source, Freesound.org (yes you need to create an account to download, worth it). I had an idea for te sounds I needed, a door, sounds of a dog running, some ambient outdoor sounds, a person whistling, a dog dog barking- these are my sources:

The Towns or Suburbs track was useful as a background for its variable bits of wind, distance voices, vehicles to give a sense of being out doors. The dogs running track had people’s voices in the beginning which I deleted.

I played a bit with the other sounds. The whistle was short, so I copy pasted it to create several versions, and then used the shift pitch to make the last 3 sound a bit more frantic.

Likewise, I replicated the Far Dog sound and decreased the volume so it would sound farther away, and truncate the last bark followed by a bit of silence to end the story:

And there you go! Make sure that door is closed, will ya?
