Sound Effect Story

On top of making a radio bumper this week, we also had to dabble in sound effects!  We were challenged to create a short story using nothing but sound effects.

To begin, I went to Youtube to find the various sounds I wanted to use.  The ds106 handbook  says that I could have used KeepVid.com to download the videos, however that site just would NOT work for me!  Instead, I googled what else I could use, and came up with iLivid.  After finding my sounds and downloading them via iLivid, I used MPEG StreamClip to trim the sound to exactly the amount I wanted.  I then opened Audacity to put the sound into there.  Looking back, I probably could have just trimmed the sound in Audacity, but I was having trouble with that when making my bumper, so I didn’t try it again.

After all that, I came out with this story!  It wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but I went with whatever sounds were easily available.

I used a whistling and walking sound effect, bugs bunny “Eh, What’s up doc?”, a shot gun sound effect, bugs bunny screaming, and a running sound effect all from Youtube.

Running on Sound Effects

The other audio assignment that was assigned this week was called the Sound Effect Story. Making a story with only sounds was definitely a challange, but it was fun to do!

I got the sounds tying shoes, bang, water bottle, and running from freesound.org. The girl drinking her water and saying ‘ah‘ at the end is yours truly :) I chose to do combine these sounds because, I’m sure you all know by now – I love to run. I layered these sounds in a program called Audacity. I couldn’t download LAME, which is a mp3 converter. I had the hardest time with that {rather lame if you ask me}. But after many downloads, many frusterations, and many failed attempts, I finally got it to work. I honestly don’t even know how! I just started clicking buttons. {I think I might have installed the wrong one at first because now my internet is acting funky and won’t open new tabs! Uhhh} However, it was very easy to put these all together after I watched Professor Levine’s video on Audacity.

ddddd

‘Seriously, if I didn’t have the DS 106 handbook and the weekly check-list, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself!

Princess Goes to Best Buy

Well here I am, doing both audio assignments for the week in one night! Typically, I spend about two days brainstorming ideas on what I want to do my assignments on, and then spend the rest of the week working on them. Not having class on Wednesday and Friday really are quite the blessing because I get to spend all day in my royal throne (my bed), in my royal attire (a tiara and pajamas), and do my royal work (of ds106). However, like every week, there has to be a villain and there were TWO this time. But for now, I’ll only mention one: my computer charger.

Yes that is right, after finally getting my computer back to it’s normal state and being virus free (I missed having google chrome so much) my computer charger decides to make my life more challenging. So, the new charger that I got right before Christmas (to replace the 4 year charger I was using) broke. It was not fixable and I had pretty much no battery left on my laptop. So I was pretty much screwed and found myself the next day having to go to Best Buy. But instead of boring you with the details, I’ll let you listen to them.

What is that screaming at the end? That’s me, because as soon as I got back to plug my computer in, I realized I bought a charger for a netbook and not a laptop. I just seem to be having the worst luck when it comes to technology this semester which is unfortunate since two of my classes are completely online.

So when originally thinking about what to create for this Assignment, I thought about making a part of Cinderella. But then I realized that the story has already been told, and I should make one up on my own. So I decided to do something that  I knew I would talk about no matter what in my blog, the villain of the week. Finding sounds was not hard at all, I used freesound.org to get the typing, walking, car doors, starting car, scanner, and cash register and then I recorded the rest. Importing everything together with Audacity, I noticed on a few of these recordings, especially my own ones that there is a lot of background noise. So that’s when the Noise Removal tool and I became best friends. By simply recording a portion of the static noise, I was able to really make the presentation a lot smoother. Pretty much once I found the sounds it was just simply putting layers everywhere. I wanted to organize it in a nice fashion, so I named each layer and would move them in the order in which they would play. Something which I found the be very useful as well was making the height of each sound bar small so that I could see how everything played out like so:

By making these small, I could see every layer together to make sure that things were going well. After working and messing around with Audacity, I can say that I am really excited about the program and can’t wait to work with it more! Who would have thought this princess would fall in love…with a computer program (well at least my computer scientist Dad will be happy with that)!

(New) 5 Sound Story: Learning to Play an Instrument

Okay, I have a new 5 sound story, only this time it was done just now and not a few months ago. Also this one only has 7 sounds as opposed to the other one with 19 sounds. Oh well, it’s still fun creating these!

This sound story is about me in the 4th grade attempting to learn how to play an instrument. My dad introduced me to 3 instruments: the piano, the flute, and the clarinet. Despite me practicing for hours every day, I still seemed to be getting nowhere! This was insanely frustrating for me, and I tended to take my anger out on the instrument itself. Turns out all I needed was more practice, because I eventually got the hang of the flute after 2 months of torture. Plus my dad was sick of paying for the damages on the other 2 instruments… I’ve recently picked up the clarinet and piano again to give them another shot!

[Updated] Sound Effect Story

This was the most fun I’ve had doing something in this class so far and I have no idea why.

The explosions need a little work.

After some comments, I went back in to make another story.  I liked the old one, but it was clear to me that my message was not coming across clearly.

Having said that, I took in the advice and created a new story.  Here it is:

I started off with the background–just some wind blowing through trees.  Then I added a baby laughing, baby saying dada, a fart, sniffing, a moan, a choking sound, followed up with the sound of a drop; all courtesy of Sound Dogs.  Did all the work in Audacity, just layered things all up with some cutting and pasting.

5 sound story

I used free sounds to get my five sounds and then used audacity to put the sounds together in a form of a story. The story is a person drinking water and then leaving his porch to go on a run in the forest. At the end of his run he is breathing heavily and then walking back.

Enjoying a cooked meal

This 3 star assignment was to conduct a story with five sound effects. This assignment was easy for me as I have done it before creating a story of a day at the beach. This time however, I chose to create one of my favorite activities: cooking and enjoying my meal afterwards! I downloaded sounds from Free Sound and opened them into audacity, I think put the sounds together to create my story. First I cut up some vegetables, after which I turn on my stove to boil water and add my spaghetti and vegetables that I cut up. I then, Take out a plate for myself, and sit to enjoy the lovely meal I just made for myself :) .

Forever Studying

From the first week that we wet our feet with audio assignments, I thoroughly enjoyed the “Sound Effect Story” assignment, so I took it upon myself to make another one. This sound effect story uses five different sounds. Two different breathing sounds (for the sigh at the end), some classical music in the background (because I like to listen to classical music when I study), a page flip sound, and a slurp for the sound of someone drinking coffee. I got all my sounds from freesound, and edited them (clipped them down) together to create my story. I think it does a good job of capturing the stressfulness of studying. (Fitting because that’s all I feel like I have been doing for the past 4 weeks).

Nice day ruined by the rain

Testing testing
(sorry, in the process of trying to make my blog pretty I thought I had deleted the whole thing, good thing Prof. Levine reminded me that I probably just messed up the formatting) It’s true what they say, what you post on the internet, stays there forever!

Okay, so somehow between me freaking out, my blog going cray, and me reposting half of my post I don’t see the one about my sounds!

Don’t cry readers, I’ve come to fix it.

So my sound is basically about people enjoying their day at the beach and getting rained on.  We all hate those days at the beach! I hope you enjoy my sound!

I used Audicity to mash up all of my sounds, FreeSound to download the sounds, and SoundCloud to upload it so everyone can hear it.  It was a lot of hard work and a lot of youtube tutorial videos to get this thing going, so I hope you guys enjoy it!

P.S. I know I’m 12 seconds short :(

If a Tree Falls in a Forest…

Having completed the audio assignment to create an audio bumper for ds106 radio, the idea of trying to create a 5-sound story was no longer nearly so daunting. :)   The hardest part, really, was trying to decide what kind of story I wanted to tell.

I decided to tell a story about  nature, and ultimately settled on the story of a storm.  I’ve quickly come to love freesound.org.  Not only did I get all 5 of my sounds from this source, but I also got inspiration from it.  When I had a hard time narrowing down story ideas, I simply clicked on the ‘Browse tags’ link on the home page, and began checking those for ideas and to get a better picture of the kind of possibilities that were out there.  Very neat.

This story consists of the sound of water drips, wind, rain, thunder, and of course, the sound of the tree falling, for a climactic focal point of the story. :)

When creating the story within audacity, I started immediately by changing all the tracks to mono, just to simplify it and make it easier to view all 5 tracks at the same time.  I then got to work trimming the various sounds to the lengths I wanted them, and moving them around to make sure they were where I wanted them.

It’s far from perfect, but I had fun creating it.  Enjoy!
