I had fun with this assignment as well. It look a little bit of maneuvering concerning how to time each sound, and what sounds would be effect when underlain. It also took some time browsing www.freesound.org for sounds relating to the story I wanted to portray. It isn’t anything out of the ordinary, or super spectacular, but that wasn’t what I was going for. I wanted to lay out something was very simple, yet so known to us that it became almost beautiful. I hope you guys enjoy listening to it!
Sounds of Morning

During this week we were asked to do lots of audio related assignments…. One of them was to create a Sound Effect Story. We were asked to download Audacity in order to work and mess around with the sounds that I was getting off of the free sound website. After downloading the sounds I wanted from this website, I imported them into Audacity and then used Alan’s video on how to overlap the sounds as a resource to figure it all out. I had a really hard time trying to find all the sounds I wanted for my story, I didn’t really get everything I wanted, but I certainly tried. It was all a bit frustrating considering I hate working with sound… pictures I can do, but audio has always been an issue. Nonetheless, after I finished my story I uploaded it onto my SoundCloud and this is what I got :
The actually story behind this audio is ….. Grabbing a bite to eat as you get into your car and turn it on. You then drive to your destination, which in this case happens to be your childs soccer game. You hear the kids yelling on the field and having a very fun and loving time (reminds me of when I used to play as a little girl, the atmosphere was always so fun). There is cheering and the whistle blows for the end of the game.
I initially wanted to have different sounds, like maybe sounds of kids being excited and loud in the car on the way to the game… but finding sounds like that isn’t as easy as I thought. Also, editing the sounds to fit perfectly together was a bit of a challenge… but I tried my best, after all it is my first time!
Now I don’t know how much description we are supposed to give with our sound story. I kind of want people to figure out what is going on to see if I’ve made everything clear enough. I’m not going to give you anything but a title… “Distracted Walking”
As a direct result of how crappily the Eagles played today I created this story. What I wish I was doing instead of homework… drinking a beer.
So my sound story is supposed to convey the changing from evening to night, from the activity of the day to the quiet, sometimes tranquility of the night. I was inspired by what I hear on beautiful days with my windows open and the world going on outside. I’m keeping in mind what Ira Glass said about everyone’s work sucks at some point and I think I’m at that point with audio. I have some issues with transitioning sounds but overall I’m happy with my first encounter with audio. I didn’t quite kill it as Glass said to but I think I gave it a few bruises.
I found all 7 of my sound clips on freesound.org and mashed them together using audacity. I used separate sounds for the passing car, children playing, dogs barking, birds chirping, crickets, wind, and owl hooting. It was my first time using both and while at first audacity threw me I was able to figure it out and enjoyed using it. I accidentally deleted my audio workings a couple times but in the end I figured out not to do that and it all worked out well, I think.
My sound effect story portrays a wedding day. I started with the wedding bells and fading it out but midway through the wedding bells a church door opens where the bride enters and that sound fades out. She then walks down the aisle and there is a short pause. After, the sound effect of kissing occurs, then the WEDDING CROWD CLAPS AND CHEERS FOR THE NEWLYWEDS!!! The cheering sound fades out at the end.
This assignment at first seemed daunting as I began to play with audacity. After having to restart from scratch several time I started to get a hang of the software. I came up for doing my story when I began watching the videos early in this week outlining storytelling. My favorite part of this assignment was by far going on the free sounds website and sifting through all of the options there I could use for my story. Granted my sound effects story I didn’t use the most complex technique I imagine were possible I was able to gain a relative foundation for future audio projects.
The first audio assignment I did this week was creating a sound effect story:
It is a bit of a horror story. I downloaded my sounds from freesounds.org and mp3skull.com and then imported them to Audacity where I layered them as well as put in some effects like fading in. Can you guess what happens?
Then I made a bumper for DS106Radio:
It’s a little shorter then specified, but I think it sounds good.
This week we were challenged to make a short audio story using only sound effects.
I wish I had more time to do this assignment.(yeah we had a week, but I’ve been super busy) I had fun listening to all the free audio/sound effects I could find. I ended up settling on a sound effect story that I could relate to best. I made short work of this challenge and created this:
Pretty awesome if I do say so myself! The subject of the audio just made it even more interesting for me…keep making assignments like this!
