Greetings Loved Ones

Brownie Points (sorry I don’t have the power to give out extra star points) for whoever can name that song I’m pulling that line from in the title!!

Since I have an impending trip coming up in a week and a half(!!!), I thought this was an appropriate assignment. This 2-start design assignment is about creating a greeting card sharing where you are, where you are from or where you would like to be.

For my greeting card I simply took the picture off of google images, opened it in Picmonkey and added the text. I was a bit concerned about using to types of fonts, but I actually LOVE the way this turned out.

I can’t wait to visit this place in a little over a week and a half with Brittany and two other wonderful friends!

What do you all think?

PS I know this pictures kind of small, but going up in size makes it too large, Flickr doesn’t have a good inbetween :(

Post Card from Paradise

Greetings from ds106

“Tell us where you are, where you’re from, or simply where you’d rather be and build a greeting card.”

Part 3

Being the good daughter she is, Eliza sent her parents a post card from paradise filling them in on her amazing trip.

The back says:

“Mom and Dad,

I am having the best time. I picked up this post card outside the Pantheon, and sat down outside to enjoy the sunshine and culture. Rome is a huge city, luckily their subway only has 2 lines, so it’s not too hard to get where you’re going. Can’t wait to see you when I get home, and start applying to jobs with a fresh global perspective.

Love,
Eliza”

I made this postcard by taking a picture I took on my amazing trip, uploading it to Picasa and adding text.

Greetings from Ethiopia

I have been to Ethiopia several times and wanted to do a postcard that represented it accurately but not stereotypically.

Assignment Details

Tell us where you are, where you’re from, or simply where you’d rather be and build a greeting card.

Personal Experience
I couldn’t quite figure out how to insert a text to an image on GIMP therefore I did this project on Microsoft Word (Woohoo)! I simply picked a photo that I took in Ethiopia and chose one that I felt represented Ethiopia in a ‘non-stereotypical’ manner but still reflected Africa. Through Word I changed the contrast and brightness of the picture. After I did that I inserted a text box and made the ‘fill’ transparent so the text would look like it blended in with the image. After I finished creating the postcard I clicked the PrintScreen button on my keyboard and pasted it in Windown Picture Manager. Following, I cropped the unecessary extras and saved the image as a JPEG. I am really happy with the way it turned out and if I was visiting Ethiopia I think I would purchase this postcard :)

Where I’d Rather Be

Last but not least this week I did the assignment Greetings from DS106:

“Tell us where you are, where you’re from, or simply where you’d rather be and build a greeting card.”

I LOVE going to the lake. My family has a cabin on a lake in Canada that I wish I could get to more, and then of course Lake Anna right down the road will do too. To me the Lake is everything I could ever want; its relaxing to sit on the dock watching the calm water and the boats driving by, its refreshing to jump in the cool (shark-free) water, and it’s exciting to go tubing and wake boarding and jet skiing.

To make my greeting card I found the picture through a creativecommons.org search of a lake at dusk, or dawn I guess. I didn’t want to use I picture I had of a Lake because I like the ambiguity of not knowing which lake it is, to me any dock on a lake is perfect. I uploaded this picture to Picasa and added the text “From the dock of…” a little play on words of “From the desk of” and then I thought of the name “Lake Sunset”, because watching the sun set, or rise on the dock is always gorgeous. For the colors of the text I used the  eye dropper tool to pick colors from the sky. I miss summer already.

Greetings from Lagos, Nigeria

For this design assignment, I decided to make a postcard from my hometown! I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria and most of my family still lives there. Google image really played a key role in deciding the image i finally settled for, because it happens that I am familar with the location on the image. Most people in the western world still believe that Africa, Nigeria specifically, is a jungle where its all about tigers and Lions. but the image in post contradit such a notion. Nigeria, Lagos in particular, is a vibrant city. The commercial nerves of Nigeria with its busiet seaport, carefully cared-for roads and rail systems. A must see city that lies at the corner edge of Africa. Its definetely a place to visit and do business. It’s an amazing city with a lot of culture and life. Therefore, this special greetings comes from the real heartland of Africa, Nigeria, Lagos State.

Grettings

This is where my dad has been relocated and i cant wait to get home i haven’t seen him in forever and i also have a very special friend there!

I made this image on my iPhone, i find that i make a lot of images better from my phone than i can with some of these complicated photo editors. I found three images on Google, saved them to my computer and then emailed them to myself. I then save them to my phone and open them in an app called pic collage, from their you chose the best frame for you and move things around to make them look the way you want.
