Tutorial for Recycled media

During the Fall 2012 iteration of ds106 taught at UMW, we collected media from students that was unused in their previous work uploaded to http://dropitto.me/ds106phonar (the password was “photos4life” newly added media might take some time to be moved- we have to feed the squirrels that do this manual labor). The content was migrated to a public download site, which contains at least 150 images, audio and video http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO.

Your task for this assignment is to mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types (e.g. audio and image, imahe and video). The story most likely would be done as a video, but see if you can make these different kinds of media make sense as the content. What kind of recycled story can you make out of this cast off media?

This was a 3 star worth assignment.

Tutorial:

This tutorial is to help one in creating a video from recycled media of ds 106. This tutorial will guide the audience though the process as it is screen- casted.

Specific instructions

Go to http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO
Select desired media
Go to Windows Live movie maker
Select “Add movies/photos” to add your media
Organize your media- simply clicking on them-then drag them wherever you desire
Go to “Add music” to add your desired music, downloaded from Recycled media of ds 106.
You can also add Captions to you images/video

For my first assignment, I choose to do an audio assignment. The blog and tutorial can be found on this blog page with the tutorial.

Music Tag

One of my favorite type of assignments is audio! Lyrics and songs are great ways to tell stories. Have you notice similar themes extend genres… lyrics overlapping. Your task is to create a story by using audio snippets from songs. The trick is you have to have the last word of your clip, be the same word that starts the next clip. Use at least 5 different songs, try to include different genres or decades.

Find all the YouTube videos of your songs and position it to play a little before the part you want to capture.
Use Audacity to record the clips
Edit the Clips Together
Export Your New Story

I believe songs are the most unviersal way to tell stories. It, therefore, isn’t surprisng that songs tend to overlap. This assigment made me think of all the themes (not just genres) that I listen too! I, also, shows the connectivness of people acrosse time.

For my second assingment, I chose to do a video or maybe a mash-up assignment. I called it video because originally I believed it to be video. However, after writting up a post about it… I reconsidered… it is called Music Video. The assignment can be found here.

I love video and audio, so I combined these two mediums in video form. The goal was to create a Music Video using clips from a movie. Music videos are musics companion in telling stories. I personally perfer music videos becasue I can visualize the lyrics better. For my example, I used The Notebook a movie based on Nicolas Spark’s book and “Hey Pretty Girl”by Kip Moore.

I believe the storyline in the The Notebook is greatly reflected in the the song “Hey Pretty Girl”. Both types of story are about falling in love with a pretty girl, becoming a family, and living out the rest of their lives together The two combined truly enhance the story.

Note: I think was truly makes this a music video is the shots of Kip Moore sing….just like iin the real video

Description:

This assignment is to create a dance video by combining dance styles of three different countries or cultures. Select those parts of the dance videos, that you download, that would go well together. Afterward, combine those three dance clips; and mute its music. After muting the videos original music, add new dance music to it-remember the music you add should go well with all those three dance styles.

Write a blog post describing those dance style; also mention in which country those dance styles are common.

The dance video I created is a combination of Afghani Qataghani dance style, Indian Kathak dance style and belly dancing. The background music is called Qataghani saaz, which is an Afghani dance music.

Just Dance

This is a 3 star worth assignment.

This dance video is a new idea created by me for video assignment repository of ds 106. For this dance video I combined three different dance styles; which were Afghani Qataghani dance style , Indian Kathak dance style and Middle East belly dancing of Shakira . The background music is called Qataghani saaz, which is an Afghani dance music.

After downloading those dance videos from YouTube; I used MPEG_Streamclip for selecting my desired dance sense. Afterward, I used Windows Live movie maker for editing my video.

I really like dancing therefore I got the idea of creating a dance video. I really enjoyed creating it ; and I found it very interesting as well.

What I did When I was Younger

Find a picture of when you were little and add decorations to the picture to make it tell a story. It doesn’t have to just be a picture of you it can be of you and your family or you and your friends, but it has to be a picture of you when you were little. Be creative and have fun with this assignment.

I rated this assignment 1 star because it is supposed to be an easy and fun assignment. It actually could’ve been 2 stars with finding the certain decorations to add to the picture.

For this assignment I found a picture of me (right) and my best friend (left) when we were little. It was already saved on my computer so it was easy to upload into photoshop editer. I then went to the decoration side of the editor and added party decorations to the picture. This picture was taken around Christmas time, but I wanted to change the meaning of the photo by designing it to have more of a party theme. I then added me saying happy birthday to my friend. Her birthday is close to Christmas time so that ‘s why I wanted to decorate this picture with party themes instead of all holiday decorations. This picture tells a new story. I hope that future ds106 students will enjoy this assignment. It also brings back a lot of childhood memories.

From Dark to Light or Light to Dark

Take a picture in a dark setting or light setting and then open it in any photo editor to make it look lighter or darker. Be creative!

I rated this assignment one star because this was a quick and easy assignment that anyone can do.

I did the assignment and my example is the one shown on the assignment page. For this assignment I first found a picture that had really good lighting. It is the picture on the right hand side shown above. After that I then opened up photoshop editer and uploaded the picture there. I then changed the exposure and lighting on the picture to make it look darker. And then I put the before and after images together to make the image shown above.

Create something that might look like the screenshot of someone’s Pinterest (www.pinterest.com) account. It could be that of a fictional character (Harry Potter might pin “how to get rid of scars” or maybe Princess Leia is pinning “Easy Bun Hairdos”) or just things you personally like. This assignment may make more sense to you if you have a pinterest account, but if not you could easily take a screen shot of the homepage. Be creative!

TUTORIAL:

For this tutorial I am going to show you all how to use Pinterest. After you know how to use Pinterest it’ll be easy to complete this assignment.

First go to http://pinterest.com/

From there you can create your account or log in.

This first part of the tutorial will be about creating an account:

Click on join pinterest, now it leads you to this screen pictured below. You can sign up for Pinterest account using Facebook, Twitter, or your email. When signing up for Pinterest using Facebook or Twitter just sign into your Facebook or Twitter account and your Pinterest account will already be created.

I’m going to show you how to sign up for Pinterest using your email. This screen will show up (pictured below) and you will then create a user name, then you can enter your email address, create a password, and write your first and last name as well as provide your gender. You can also upload a picture of yourself if you wish. Then click the create account button at the bottom of the screen. (it will be a red button after you fill all the required information out)

After creating your account, you will then have to pick 5 boards to follow to get started on Pinterest. You can also follow people you know this just gets you started.

After following 5 different boards, you can then create your own Pinterest board. Pinterest gives you many categories to choose from, your options are limitless, and you can always create and title your own Pinterest board.

After creating your first board you will then be able to view your main homepage on pinterest. This shows all the pins from the people that you follow.

Now if you click on a pin you can zoom in on it and you can either Repin or Like the Pin, or comment on it. Repinning lets you pin the pin onto your board while liking the pin saves the Pin in your likes section. You can also comment on a pin which is just like commenting on any kind of post you see on Facebook or Twitter.

That’s basically is all you need to know about Pinterest. There is a search option in the top left corner where you can search for people and pins. You can also get notifications when people repin and like and follow you on pinterest. Pinterest basically is a place where you can organize things you like into categories, and such.

Here is a picture of what your Pinterest page looks like: On here you can view your boards, your pins and pins you’ve like. It also shows you who follows you and who you are following.
