Fort GIFpache

Here comes my epic multi GIF bonanza as part of the ds106 GIFfest, it might fall into a Multi-GIF story.

It’s BROUGHT TO EXCITING LIFE!

exciting life

What follows are 16 GIFfable scenes from the 1948 John Ford Western, Fort Apache. Rented from the nifty little library in Pine, AZ, the movie appeals on several levels, first because of the iconic scenery of Monument Valley it might be 100 miles from the real Fort Apache). Yes, the mittens are familiar, but it’s that vast space the Ford used so well to back narrate the story.

You also have some name stars, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, even a adult-ish) Shirley Temple. It’s a slice a bit different from the typical cowboys versus Indians, though both are present, but really dives into the tension of the white settles who had lived long enough in the southwest to appreciate and understand the land and te people versus the Eastern presence represented by Henry Fonda’s Colonel Thursday, who blindly put his stature, class, and textbok ideas above the common sense of those like John Wayne’s Sergeant York.

Among all of this is also a bit of slapstick humor, especially the local Irish Cavalry men, who had little interest or respect for Thursday’s formality.

What follows is not a recap of the story, but some key moments that, to me, are drawn out by the GIF process if isolating scenes and ten narrowing them down even more to 3-14 frames.

01-stagecoach

The opening scene brings the arrivale of Colonel Thursday and his daughter, the unlikely named “Philadelphia Thursday” to Fort Apache, the “distant outpost”. The opening jockeying of the drivers, laughing it up, contrasts with the uptight expression fo Henry Fonda’s Colonel Thursday– and Philadelphia? She;s mesmerized in her Big City hat. This extends into their arrival, as no one is even expecting Thursday, who is flustered at the lack of formality.

I liked the repetitive pattern of the spinning wheel here, that cried for GIFfing.

02-mrsorourke

GET MRS O’ROURKE! In showing the importance of people here by their reputation, a call is put out (literally passed down the sidewalk by person to person) to find Mrs O’Rourke, the woman who apparently gets things done. Help is needed to young Philadelphia Thursday, who has asked for help in getting her new home in the Fort set up.

This scene two had this great pattern of the message being passed down the sidewalk, and then return as Mrs O’Rourke ran back up the sidewalk.

03-philly-michael-horse-ride

Did you think there would not be romance on the Fort? That was also obvious in the first scene, that the newly arrived Philadelphia would be smitten by the younger Michael O’Rourke. It was this horseback ride out into the wilderness that would set the stage for the conflict with her father.

But here, out in the classic landscape of Monument Valley, it’s all goo goo eyes.

04-thursday-desk

Henry Fonda plays the prim, proper, and out of place Colonel Thursday to a tee. He’s all about formality and West point, and doe snot even realize how out of his element he is in here in the Southwest. He’s all paperwork.

I like how the last frame capture the pencil tap.

05-2-troopers

These two soldiers a recut loose from the stockade to go on a special detail. Young O’Rourke returns from the horse ride with Thursdays daughter, with news of the slain cavalry men and cut telegraph wires. The new Colonel is both furious at the young O’Rourke for having been out with his daughter. He does not see him of being the same class, but is also impressed with the young officer’s report. These two Irish soldiers are sent to fetch the bodies of their comrades who were slain, and express their anger at loosing their buddies.

06-york-beaufort-water

Given his experience and relationship with the great Apache Chief Cochise, Sergeant York (John Wayne) and the Spanish speaking/translator Sgt Beaufort ride out from Fort Apache to find Cochise down in Mexico. It’s a long journey (ironically they are seen at the top edge of the Goosenecks of the San Juan River, and then even crossing the river at the bottom, although this is geographically north of Fort Apache. Geographic license trumps scenery.

Here they are sharing their last bit of water, passing the canteen. This is one of my favorite GIFs, as it seems to loop around perfectly.

07-cochise

A very short sequence here shows the presence, calmness, and assuredness of Cochise, played by Mexican actor Miguel Inclán. This sequence focused on Cochise, but the background shifted around a bit. Since this was only 7 frames, I went in and traced out his figure, and removed the background from the frames, leaving one solid background, in this way isolating his movement.

08-buenos-tardes

Another key moment here that shows the respect between Sergeant York and Cochise, while at the same time realizing they are caught up in a larger battle. Here York puts his arms out to match Cochise, and give a respectful greeting, of “Buenos Tardes”- I love the framing here of York under the long rifle of Cochise’s comrade.

09-horse-walk

This begins a sequence of GIFs representing the readying of the Cavalry to head out and meat Cochise and his own army, who is heading back believing that there is an opportunity for peace or to be treated with respect. He had led his people away fro the reservation that was supposed to be a safe place, but was abused by the profiteer who ran the operation.

This is an amazing sequence, which was, as described in the documentary on the DVD, filmed in infrared film to enhance the power and contrast of the skies. Apparently the actors had to wear brown makeup to keep their faces from being bleached out. But its also, how they are filmed almost as “statues” .

10-forward-ho

11-york-ho

FORWARD HO! They march out, York still believing that they are headed out to follow through on the offer he and Cochise had agreed upon.

But Colonel Thursday has no interest in keeping York’s agreement. He belittles Cochise, speaking with disrespect, and demands a respect he has not earned. Thursday is under a false delusion that his rank in the US Army has that much power.

12-indians

Cochise realizes he has been tricked, but also that it is this “great White Father” from the east, not his friend York. But there will be a battle, and here you can sense his disgust as he looks out over the Army. The INdians, however are going to eb perched high on the cliffs over a narrow canyon, the trap is set…

12-troops-horses

And there they go, in a nice neat row marching right into the trap! Like good soldiers…

Thats te end of my GIFs, though of course, not the movie. There is a battle where most of the army gets cut down, including Colonel Thursday, and the final scene years later, where we learn that history has overly glorified and magnified the role of Thursday, which, in many ways, is likely a parallel for Custer.

There it is 13 GIFs for this movie! What a trip.

The Eight Nights of GIFannukah

My menorah is put away, but it seems such a nice symbol to GIF, maybe have to slip it in under Ben Rimes’ GIFmas Card assignment (the first rule of ds106 I tell my students is to change up and break the rules of an assignment, if it makes for good art).

menorah

Do you need the whole story? I would think the Macabees would dig some GIF miracles.

This started with mp photo from night 7 (I forgot to get one on the last night)

cc licensed ( BY ) flickr photo shared by cogdogblog

But that’s no problem, I was able to magic brush in a copy of one of the middle candles to fill the gap. i also managed to lose two flames by… well I think I forgot to paste. So I copied an isolated flame, and flipped it horizontal to make it looks little different

This baby weighs in at only 48k! That’s because I have isolated single flames to a layer, rather than replicating the entire scene. I copied each flame to its own layer, and then painted in black the space behind for the background. I use the animation palette window menu to convert the Layers to Frames.

Then it was a matter of turning on layers sequentially for the sequence, and adding some longer time for the first and last frame.

Doing the GUFs in layers, and using it to only place things that change is the MAGIC to making GIFs you can really generate a lot of movement and not make it bloat up to me a 2 Mb file.

If I was going to notch it up a level. I might make duplicates of the flames and flip them, so I could make them flicker across frames.

GIFfing it up for Channukah! or is it Hannukah? or is it ??

MOO(c) MOO(c) MOO(c)

Stanford is doing it. Harvard is doing it. MIT is doing it. We better do it. Just keep mooing along.

mooc-mooc-mooc

Giulia got the GIF going this before me (and cleverly wrapped it into an Instagram-like GIF with dancing panda, speaking of herding behavior, look at the stampeded over to flickr). I knew when I saw this Cow & Cow & Cow & video that I had to GIF it or do something with it.

The video is worth it for the zany music and the metamoo-phasis of the cows (all rendered brillaintly in Adobe After Affects).

Just look at those Yes Cows. Everybody in agreement. This one was a bit tricky since the entire video had the cows panning. I ended up narrowing it to three frames, and using some pixel nudging to try and align the cows and then crop out the non-overlap. It’s not clean, but neither are cow pastures.

And given that I have GIFfed a cow in my mockubloggery on cows and cheese

dog and cow

(based on the funny wild dog and poor cow cartoon)

surely a ds106 assignment was needed in the bovine category. And Shirley it is, Moo Moo Says the GIF:

Everyone loves cows. Especially when they are animated as GIFs. They can be your garden variety Jersey milk cows, or the Massively Open Online kind. Just make them moooooooooooove.

.

Just to make it complete, I dabbled a bit from a single photo of a strange local sign I spotted when I was having my truck repaired. Pete’s Place is kind of a local landmark in nearby Star Valley. I cannot say I have ever been there, but you can imagine the clientele.

mooc-cabaret

Yep, all those places wanting to be Harvard, Stanford, MIT… just keep your eyes on the dancing girls. Like the cow.

What are you waiting for? Moo it on over and make some GIF art, eh?

The Muppets Are On to You, ds106!

Allright, one more GIF (this morning) and then off to do something else. Maybe.

Statler-Waldorf-ds106

This one can fit into two of the categories- RIFF a GIF and GIF the #ds106 (this is a test if I can slip one example into two assignments).

Love and Boxing, GIFfed

The eclectic Woody Allen has had many romantic encounters, on and off screen. How could he ever forget his lively yet draining down under love affair?

woody-vs-roo2

I was going to make a new assignment for the #ds106 GIFfest, but sometimes it is more fun to make the GIF fit, in this case making it slip in facetiously under Michael Branson Smith’s I’ll Love You Forever:

Help that cinematic love last for eternity by turning it into an animated GIF.

There is a good and growing set of GIFable tasks, time now to fill in with examples. So far RIFF a GIF is in the lead.

These starry eyed lovers first met at sunset on a brushy hill top north of Adelaide, he the pasty white skinned American burning under the solar flares, she the bouncy yet quixotic marsupial who did not pull punches. They loved, they fought, and mostly just danced around their own emotional issues. It really was more of a spectacle. We could not help but watch as the sparks flew, not knowing if either was worth cheering on. Maybe it was like rubbernecking a road wreck.

woody-vs-roo

Lasting for eternity? Love is fleeting for these two, but the moment? Forever.

I could hardly resist after discovering the clip (via Open Culture) from Woody’s 1966 appearance on the apparently circus themed British show Hippodrome (it was the 1960s after all). Just look at those biceps.

Don’t Let a Scientist Talk You Into a Nuclear Powered Shaver

The ds196 GIFfest is going wild! And a bunch are taking on the Muppets challange including @noispreofessor @timmmmyboy and Michael Branson Smith who launched this one.

I like the Rodney Dangerfield Muppets, the ones who get no respect, and who gets less respect than Beaker?

Bring on the GIFness!

Dexter Jumps the Noiseprofessor: Riff a GIF!

dex-zack-500

This is my own riff on the eminent Photoshop RiffMaster, the Noiseprofessor, himself riffing with his own photoshopping of Brian Lamb’s super dog Dexter.

I upped the Fonzie with Zack’s face, and even twiddled his thumb a bit ;-)

Can ds106 be any more fun when people just play like that, rapid fire? On the surface it looks silly, but there’s something more at play. I’d wax on this, but would rather make more GIFs today. But it did get me thinking about a new assignment to be rolled into what will be (look for details tomorrow) a ds106 GIF Festival, this one known as Riff a GIF:

Some of the best parts of ds106 happens when people spontaneously build off of the whacky things others share. Rapid fire style.

Your assignment is to riff on someone eles’s ds106 work and make it new in a GIF form. It can be revising an existing GIF, or taking a graphic and turning it into a GIF.

Riff the GIF, say it three times fast.

For which this post shall be properly tagged to get included.

The same thing happened already, when Martin Weller tweeted about his plans to do some #ds106 radio:

And that got me thinking of maybe putting Martin’s face into a disco themed image, a bit of quick photoshoppery got this:

discgo

And within not too long, Martin Hawksy had RIfFed a GIF:

That’s the spirit.

Now even if Martin’s blog is not connected to ds106, he could add his example directly to the assignment

Hey, are there enough UK Martins around here? Now that would be something to riff with…

The Faultless Feed (GIF) Train

I spotted many a grain elevator in my cross country travels, but this one in Lawndale Illinois caught my attention the most, for the faint “Faultless Feed” on the side of the grain elevator, plus as a bonus it was right on Old Route 66.

While snapping my photos, I saw the lights down the track. I had to book it and run under the dropping barriers to get a series of photos of a passing Amtrak train.

What could be more suited for doing animated GIFs than trains?

We need something like this for the upcoming ds016 GIFfest (what is that) (it’s a secret) (shh). So we have the new All Aboard The GIF Train assignment hoisted in a new corner of ds106

“Train kept a rollin’ all night long…” “Down around the corner half a mile from here, see them long trains run and you watch them disappear…” Trains. They are in songs, movies, and a metaphor for steady movement. And they are ripe for GIFing- given their regular repeated motion.

Capture the essence of train movement in a GIF, and do what you can to keep it under 1 Mb (much of the train passing is repeated and you can delete frames and not lose the motion). Step it up a notch and match your train gif to a song using http://gifsound.com.

I had originally 20 photos of the train in motion, from it entering on the right, and passing out on the left in the last one. I would add as a continuity suggestion to get one more of the scene without the train.

I imported these into PhotoShop like most of the other ones I have done – see the steps outlined for my GIFing the Streets of Liberal. After trimming/cropping, and resizing to 500px, it was still too fat, 3.5 Mb. I realized that most of the middle frames were repetitive, so I carefully examined and was able to delete 10 frames that were more or less the same motion.

Without an empty frame, it seemed awkward on the loop, so I did a little Photoshop hijinks (quite easy). The first frame as the train just nosing in on the right, so I made a copy of that frame (using the little menu top right of Animation palette) and pasting it after the last frame. That has most of the “trainless” scene, I got the rest by copy pasting from the last frame, where the train is passing out of the left side of the scene.

I set the frame rate of all the “train” frames to 0.1 second, but I made this last one 2 seconds so it lingers. The end effect is it looks like the train keeps going by on by. It’s a bit fast. Kind of a crazy train.

Forever.

Here is a little play of rolling the GIF with some Hendrix via gifsounds

And woah, completely by curious clicking, I got myself to ImgOps- a fantastic tool that lets you take an image bu URL and have at your hands a whole suite of tools you can use to edit, change, or do more with the image. This is amazing. Really.

Can you see any use for THAT? Are you crazy?

Final Project: The Man. The Myth. The Paul.

Have you ever experienced a person, an ENTITY, a being that was so out of this world?? For instance, a legend.. Someone, or something, that many people could speak of but never truly understand? How about the man, the myth? I’m sure you know of him. He has even pervaded the DS106 culture… now, he must be unleashed, unveiled, to inspire, to amaze, to, well… do all of the above…

The Man

The Myth.

Final project: "The Paul"

Now would you look at that smile. It seems he could brighten up any room, push away the rainy clouds, and leave just clear, blue sky.
However, even the Man, the Myth, the Paul has his flaws. For example, he has a tendency to go overtime on his work, and forget about deadlines. He has been meaning to work on this shortcoming, but justifies the ends with the means; the means of exalted work! maybe…. anybody?

Now, if you were to ask The Man, The Myth (yes that’s required when mentioning him) what exactly motivates him, you might hear any number of things… However, the single most important thing that The Man, The Myth would say, is that inspiring other people to do great work is what motivates him down to the core. He loves to see people inspired by his efforts and greatness. So, below is a fitting motivational poster, where The Man, The Myth, is motivation enough for anybody. All you need to do is take him in, and experience the newly-arrived motivation, success, and much, much more.

motivator237134d2a7200a1f1ff970fd89825c92c888d788

I know The Man, The Myth may seem like a very mythical creature, where extensive fables don’t even do him justice. In reality, however, he is quite a humble, and generous gentleman (no this is not a joke). Every morning when he wakes up, he sends a good morning text message to every single person in his contact list. Now if that doesn’t describe the likes of a selfless individual, I don’t know what does.

I want to take a moment here to really unveil The Man, The Myth. It is important that you gain a fuller knowledge of what goes on in the exalted life of The Man, The Myth. When he is not engaging is selfless activities such as creating extensive tutorials for friends, he can be seen in the Cave of his residence working tirelessly on Remixed Assignments and Audio mixes, one of which is found below…

He is also known to spend considerable time immersed in the psychological literature, mastering the sub-fields of Personality, Cognitive-Behavioristic, Humanistic and countless other offspring from the original field.
Here he can be seen deeply engaged in study, a steller intellectual indeed..
Steller Intellectual

Before the day is all said and done, The Man, The Myth, The Paul would not feel complete and satisfied, without having given advice to future scholars and DS106-ers. Here are some key things that he wants you to think about:

1) Blog Early. Blog Often.
2) Stretch your limits to the max. He does this before breakfast is over.
3) Don’t leave your assignments until the last minute. However, the Man, the Myth, the Paul is guilty of this every ONCE in a while…
4) Remember to eat your wheaties.
And Lastly..
5) Even the Man, the Myth, the Paul gets inspired by others. In the words of Shaun T., “DIG DEEPER!”

In all seriousness, thanks to the wonderful professor Alan Levine, whose support and feedback throughout the semester have been very helpful. If it wasn’t for his watchful eye, and persistent check-ups, I don’t know if this would be possible. I’d like to say that I enjoyed this class, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to take it over. I’d also like to thank Jim Groom for his constant support, along with Martha Burtis. You guys are great!
Until next time: The Man, The Myth, The Paul, is officially signing out.

FINAL PROJECT: Peytonnnn

Peyton Sawyer from “One Tree Hill” is a character that in the beginning represents the definition of a “stereotype”. Her character is misinterpreted completely and through her confusion within herself she becomes a mystery to everyone. What people think of her…… isn’t who she is ……. What she sees is simply …….. a MYSTERY. This Pinterest site created by Peyton exemplifies who is is, what people actually think, & the mysterious secret that no one knows about her ….that Peyton Sawyer can see EVERYTHING.

Get a little glimpse of Peyton… HERE
(Although DesignAssignment563 suggested a screenshot, I made an entire pinterest instead.)

…. Peyton has spent all of her life in a small town where everyone knows everything…. The person that she is today has a lot to do with growing up in Tree Hill. This poster that she made represents the loneliness that she experiences along with the desire to want MORE. One Tree Hill is a mystery within itself…. where are all the other trees? Why does Peyton always feel so alone?
(Inspired by DesignAssignment57 asking for a poster of a tv show location)

One Tree Hill Poster

Along with my mysterious town….. I wonder who’ll ever figure me out? I find myself feeling like a puzzle sometimes. A stereotypical high school cheerleader with an awesome boyfriend and a “great” life…. Who am I? Why don’t I know? I see sooooo many weird things on a daily basis, when is it all going to be figured out? I know I ask a lot of questions…. but when I figure out the answers, you’ll be the first to know. – Peyton has always been a form of mystery, to herself and to her surroundings. Her creativity and artwork show her secret cry for help, her cry for attention and to no longer feel alone.
(Inspired by DesignAssignment64 to caption a photo found on the ds106 flickr page)

Mystery?

Peyton was always known by her love for music music and her meaningful artwork…Although no one knew what she was feeling at times, her music always seemed to tell some type of story… It was as if she was writing poems to express what she saw, that no one else saw. Or even what she felt… that no one else was aware of. The world around her was always so confusing, but one thing she knew was that she had the support of her father who was always there, since her mother had passed. This iTunes playlist that Peyton created simply shows her hidden feelings in the way her Playlist is organized. It’s almost as if she’s crying our for her help, or thanking her Father for always being there….
(Inspired by VisualAssignment46, to create a poem playlist.)

Peyton's Playlist

One of the amazing things about Peyton … is her ability to talk and express herself, even if she is confused and can’t put everything together. Peyton holds a Podcast (nearly every night) and talks about her day … to the public viewers online. The idea of her being a mystery to herself changes once she posts all of her stuff online and expresses herself as well as seeks for help. Through this podcast the world learns about Peyton Sawyer…. and over time she’s more than mysterious…. she’s finds her place.
(I created a video using clips off of Peyton’s actual podcast from “One Tree Hill” and inserted photos of Peyton and her artwork.)
