You Lose**

For this Assignment, we had to take little clips of songs and put them into one little clip.  There’s six.  I’ll let you guess what they are.

I literally picked 6 random songs out of my iTunes and loaded them into Audacity.  Copied and pasted less than a second into the same clip and that was it.

Welcome to Goodburger…**

I did this assignment in Audacity.  We had to record ourselves making a very specific order at McDonald’s.

This really required no work at all.  I just wrote down some things I would order from McDonald’s (including the late night menu) and read them off…  You can decide what voice I used… A whole lot easier than the last 2 star assignment I had to do.

Audio Mashup**

So for this assignment, I had to mashup 3 different songs to create a story.  It was only worth 2 stars and I really think it should have been worth more because it was tough.  Here’s what I did.

http://soundcloud.com/cwyrough/mashup-story

I had all the songs off my iTunes and loaded them into audacity.  I used Coalminer by O.A.R, Good Life by One Republic ft. B.O.B, So Good by B.O.B, I Need Your Love by Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding, and American Baby by Dave Matthews Band.

To create the story I just flipped through iTunes randomly honestly.  Didn’t put much thought into it but I tried to get random types of music into it.  The only one I really got any thought about was the transition from Ellie Goulding and Dave Matthews.  I knew I wanted to put a Dave Matthews song into it and I ended up flipping through ones that were about girls and stuff so it would go along with the “hold me in your arms again” from the Ellie song.  It just worked out that Dave had a song with similar lyrics.

As for actually constructing the song, I used audacity.  I either faded the song in or normalized the transition, overlapping all the stuff for the songs.  The only part that was not transitioned was between Good Life and So Good because the beat just worked out that way so it naturally jumped between the two.

The Family Dinner (Multipersonality Assignment ****)

Hooooo boy, this was a fun one!! I’ve heard of arguing with yourself, but this is ridiculous. This was made for the Multipersonality audio assignment. I made this by using multiple tracks in Garageband and by coming up with voices that suited the sort of “average family” trope where the snobby child refuses to eat his veggies, the mom gets upset, and the father could care less what’s going on. I’ve seriously been watching waaayy too many cartoons. Anyone else think I sound like Louis Griffon from Family Guy?

This scenario reminded me of what my family went through when I was younger; my little brother was the stubborn one who wouldnt eat his greens, and me and him would cause mischief at the table. We’d end up getting sent to our rooms afterward…Good times!

How to: Call a Celeb

This tutorial is for the assignment Character Bird Calls. You can read my blog post about what I did for this assignment here.

1. The first step is to plan. You need to decide who you are going to call. Why this person? What sounds could you use to call or attract this person?

2. Once you have all of that down, you are ready to roll! I found Freesound.org the most helpful for downloading my sounds. {But if you have another website you favor, you can use that one too} Search for your sounds and click the download button to download them onto your computer/flashdrive.

freesound

3. After downloading the sounds, import them into Audacity. You can import your songs by clicking Project > Import Audio.

4. Now that you have a sound clip in there, you can cut it to make it shorter. In order to do this, you need highlight the section that you do NOT want and click the backspace key.

highlight

5. To import another sound, repeat step 3. Each sound will appear on it’s on track line.

6. If you do not want your sounds overlapping, you can use the time tool found at the top and move each track in the order you want it to sound.

time tool

7. Once you are done, save it as an MP3 file!! This is very important! Click File > Export as MP3

mp3

{By saving it as MP3, you can upload it to SoundCloud easily}

TIPS:

  • Make sure that after uploading it to SoundCloud you embed it into your blog post!
  • DON’T forget to add the assignment tags. If you forget these, you will not get any credit for all of your hard work!!!
  • Write about why you chose these specific sounds and why they form a story!

Paging Dr. Grey

For my next audio assignment, I chose to create a Character Bird Call (**). The task was the create a call or something that would attract a character from a TV show/movie/book. I chose to call for Meredith Grey from the hit TV show Grey’s Anatomy.

I downloaded my sounds from Freesound.org. I searched under the tag ‘Hospital’ and that’s where I found the heartbeat, surgery sounds, coffee being poured sounds. I cut and piled the sounds together in Audacity.

final

Meredith Grey is a surgeon at the hospital in the TV show. I chose these specific sounds because in the show, Meredith is obsessed with surgery! It is really her life. She loves hearing the sounds of being in the O.R. {operating room} and hearing a heart beat. She was not able to perform surgery at one point {for a reason that I am not going to spoil if you have not watched the show} and she went crazy! She had people call her to tell her their every move about the surgery and the different medical cases. I chose to have the coffee sound bit at the end because at the end of a surgery, the coffee stand is the first stop. After scrubbing out, of course!

My inspiration for picking this character came from the fact that it comes on Thursday nights. Tonight is Thursday. I cannot wait!!!!!

This assignment seemed so silly when I read it, I just HAD to do it.

I was right.

Silly.

I interpreted “beat poem” as like a Beatnik style poem of the late 50′s and 60′s.

So I looked up “Beatnik”

Wikipedia  Speaks of how “Joyce Johnson described how the stereotype was absorbed into American culture: “Beat Generation” sold books, sold black turtleneck sweaters and bongos, berets and dark glasses, sold a way of life that seemed like dangerous fun—thus to be either condemned or imitated. Suburban couples could have beatnik parties on Saturday nights and drink too much and fondle each others wives.”

Urban Dictionary has many colorful entries, this was my favorite, “Jazz hippies in berets.  Like…wow daddio. = Beatnik speak.”

This assignment was an exercise in patience–via audio.

How do you do this you ask?

1.  Take a deep breath

2.  Close the computer, walk away, go grab some Do-si-do’s and a big glass of milk.

3. Brainstorm. Walk around the house aimlessly, hoping you can pull this off.

4. GO!

5.  I had already downloaded audacity.  (free and easy to use.) {OH! I  downloaded the converter before too, you are gonna need it.* }

6.I spent approx. 626 minutes on FREESOUND listening to and deciding between all the cool jazzy trumpet, cello, bass, and drum selections.

7.-294. Using audacity try, sample, listen, do-over, try again, listen more, smack-head, walk-away, return, bang the desk, smile, listen some more, watch the tutorial over again, play with dogs, laugh at your own antics, relax, SAVE.

295.  Walk away.

I Know my Calculus, It Says U + Me = Us.**

It’s math time!!! I know you all have been dying for some good math times, I certainly know I have. Curious as to where I got this amazing title from? Simply check out this great song and you’ll understand. I took the 2 star assignment of The Contest Nobody Could Win a bit too literal (yet not literal at the same time). How could I do that you say? It’s simple. It was not literal because I did remixes of what I think to be popular songs. The literal part is that nobody can win since they aren’t actually real songs, and there is math involved (so that means I automatically win?).

Yes that is right, I have been busy working on all of my ds106 stuff for the two weeks so that I can really focus on all of the radio show (which is coming along really well after our meeting online). So when I had the opportunity to create a very very short story with different songs I got right to work. Typically I would do something Disney oriented, but it seems as though Disney is very on top of their copyright, and loading onto SoundCloud would not go so smoothly.

I decided then that math would be my topic of interest. I’ve known for a while now about different people putting up remakes of popular songs and incorporating calculus terminology in it. What I didn’t know was that I would spend about 2 hours in the library watching all of them (what can I say? I am a nerd). When trying to cut out certain sections I wanted to make sure it was popular tunes that people would recognize the original song.

The process of making this was similar to any other process that I have done, lots and lots of planning. For starters, while looking at different videos, I would note the ones with better audio quality. If you can’t hear the words, why should I use the clip? Once I had the six videos that I wanted to use, I picked clips from each and I tried to make them as short as possible. As usual, I put them in a word document and played around with the order, a lot. I had something completely different at first and didn’t like it. Order matters so much. So here is my final product, which I really love a lot!

All of the clips came from YouTube, which I tuned into an mp3 using the Fastest YouTube Downloader. I then imported them into Audacity and used the crop selection tool to delete parts that I did not want. The zoom tool proves very useful for this, especially when the song is quick. Once I was comfortable with the ordering of everything, I exported it into an mp3 and uploaded it to SoundCloud.

To see the creative minds themselves, look at the remixes I used:

Time for Calculus (tune of Single Ladies)

I Will Derive (tune of I Will Survive)

Calculus Rhapsody (tune of Bohemian Rhapsody)

Fresh Prince of BC (tune of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song)

Derive So Hard (tune of Ball So Hard (this original is a bit explicit))

I Integrate By Parts (tune of Total Eclipse of the Heart)

And finally, here is what my Audacity looks like:

I really loved this assignment.

Take an entry from your diary years ago and turn it into an audio story.  Done.

But wait!  I don’t have a diary from years ago.

I think I burned those in a bonfire at one time.

But did you know the Interwebz are FULL of people spilling their beans.  Yes, I admit I am one of them at timesWell not to the extent some folks go…but you get the idea.

If you are interested in reading deep, dark secrets try out one of these places:

diary.com

opendiary.com

livejournal.com

diaryland.com

I’m sure there a million more, even everyday blogs are diaries too.  These sites just happen to have places specifically for diarists.

One of my favorites that I came across was from opendiary.com.  The author is Beautifully_chaotic

The story above is her story, not mine, I just read it out loud to you.

My guess is she is pretty young, smart, beautiful, and a bit confused, heck, who isn’t?  I’m glad she decided to share some of her stories/ diary entries with the public.

How to Do a Music Tag Tutorial

So welcome to my tutorial for this amazing assignment on how I made my musical tag. Since the story of the project was really long I decided to break it up, so you can read the story part over here.

For starters the first thing you need to do is plan plan plan plan! Planning the whole process will really help you.

Here were some questions that I asked myself

  • Do I want to do a certain genre?
  • Do I want to do a certain artist?
  • What is the theme of my work?
  • What story do I want to tell?

I decided to do Sara Bareilles and tell a break up story. So the next step was to look up the lyrics to songs.  Try to do songs that you are familiar with, it will help you so much more.

I copied and pasted the lyrics that I wanted into Microsoft word, just so I could keep track of everything. When planning this, aware of the lengths of the clips that you are listening to. Make sure that you have at least a verse or a chorus or both when it comes to the project. It will help to tell your story a bit better.

I found the YouTube videos of the songs that I wanted and I tried to find them on the artist’s account (usually associated with Vev0). Listen to the song before you do anything else! You need to make sure that the quality of the audio is good, if it is a live recording or has a lot of background noise you do not want to select that. Once you select a video, use the Fastest YouTube Downloader to transfer the file into an mp3.

I created this final product in Audacity, which is a great tool to use one you get used to all of the different features of the program. Here are the steps I took:

  1. I imported the first song that I wanted to do into the program:

import audio2.  Find the part of the song that you want to start at.

  • If it is at the beginning, then move onto the next step.
  • If it is not at the beginning of the song, then pause where you want to start and use the select tool to select the portion you want to delete. Then hit the DEL key on your keyboard. If this does not work, hit the stop button then the DEL key again.

Selection

3. Go to the second part of the song and using the same technique, delete the part of the song that you don’t want to use. For a tip, really take your time to make sure that you are cutting out the right words. Use the zoom tool to get as close to the words as possible, which will make your transitions much easier.

zoom tools

4. Import your next song, just like you did in step 1. To prevent multiple songs playing at the same time, click the solo button so only that track will play, and cut it accordingly like in steps 2 and 3.

Solo Key

5. Once you are done cutting, use the Time Shift Tool in order to move your track, it will attach to the tracks near it, which is nice. Make sure you click the solo button again to allow all tracks to play again!

Time Shift Tool

6. Repeat this process until you have your final product.

finished product

7. Export the file to be a mp3 so that you can share, and upload onto SoundCloud!

Good luck!
