Cartoonize It*

My final design assignment of the week, Cartoonize Bubba (Or Fluffy) (worth 1 star), called to edit a photo of my favourite pet to make it look like a cartoon.  I used the suggested site, befunky.com, to cartoonize my photo.

I uploaded a photo of my dog, Alex, to the site and chose the cartoon effect.  I then uploaded both photos to Picasa and created a collage to compare then side-by-side.  Voilà!

A Whatchamacallit**

Although this design assignment, found in the ds106 assignment bank, called to  Design Your Dream Animal, I wouldn’t necessarily say this animal is my dream one!  To create a new animal using at least four species, I used Picasa and Paint to create this whatchamacallit.

I began with a tiger’s body (which is my favourite animal!) and added a dolphin’s dorsal fin and a tiger shark’s tail.  For the head, I used a penguin to complete whatever animal this is!  I found the photos of the tiger, dolphin’s dorsal fin, shark’s tail, and penguin’s head all via Google.

To blend each body part together some, I used the retouch effect in Picasa.

Lights, Camera, Action! ***

Similar to the Propaganda Poster assignment, DS106, The Movie (rated 3 stars) called to use a movie poster to depict a movie about ds106.

My boyfriend has a poster of the latest batman movie in his room, so that inspired me to use The Dark Knight Rises as my basis for a ds106 movie.

I found a poster for the movie via Google:

Original Batman Poster

Using Picasa, I retouched the bat logo from the spotlight and inserted the twitter bird logo which I also found through Google.  I changed the line at the top from “Why do we fall?” to “Why do we tweet?”  I also changed the “Dark” in the dark knight rises to “DS106″.  Here’s what I came up with!

“Let Me Take You Down” **

While browsing through the design assigments of the ds106 assignment bank, I found an assignment called Name That Single!  Worth 2 stars, this activity was to create a design for a favourite song without using words.  So, basically charades but ds106 style!

I thought of a lot of songs I loved, but they wouldn’t have been easy to make a design out of.  Instead, I chose an easier one (I think) that is still one of my favourites.

I found the photo on Google from here, which I then saved to my computer and opened with Picnik via Picasa.  Using the doodle button, I drew an infinity symbol above the plants.

Can you guess the song??

Computer Books For Kids

This particular design assignment was to, “take a well-known kids book and re-cast it as a computer book.” The book cover I chose to play with was One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, by Dr. Suess. When making the new cover, I considered the three most commonly used tools for a DS106 student and their perfect rhyming scheme. I then used Pixlr to edit the original cover and create my own spin on it. I contemplated swapping the fish from the cover with logos for each respective tool, however I thought that would take too much away from the original. Here is the final product, I Hope you like it!

Motivational Poster! **

I was inspired to complete an assignment called Motivational Poster! (worth two stars) from the ds106 Assignment Bank,  because I love reading demotivational posters.  This design assigment, however, called to create an original motivational poster; something to inspire, not degrade.

I found a photo on my computer of my old dog and barn cat snuggling together.  Immediately, I knew I would use the caption “Friendship.”  I opened the photo in Picasa and added a border to the photo with enough room on the bottom for text.  Beneath “Friendship”, I put “Comes in all forms.”  I uploaded my final product to Flickr, et voilà!

Abrakadabragam***

While searching through the pages upon pages of Design Assignments in the ds106 Assignment Bank, I stumbled upon an assignment called Venn Pop Culture.  Rated three stars, it called to create a 3 circle venn diagram of a pop culture figure in the center.  After some thinking, I chose to do Harry Potter.

I opened Paint and created a venn diagram using the circle shapes. I then added the text to each space and uploaded my final product to Flickr.  This was a quick activity for me, but it did make me think a bit about what I wanted to put down as the overlapping ideas between each circle.

The Ultimate Merger

The ultimate merger assignment was to create a logo that combines to famous logos. I thought that I should merge the two most predominant logos that we see everyday as DS106′ers, twitter and flickr. The assignment was pretty simple to complete, and was also very enjoyable. I used pixlr to create the logo. I then used the color matching tool to get the correct colors, and then shuffled through some fonts to find the text that most closely resembles Flickr’s logo. Here is the result:

Rewriting Film

The purpose of this assignment was to pick a pivotal point in a film and rewrite the dialogue of that moment so that it changes the outcome of the movie. After browsing through a bunch of webpages, I found one that lists 40 iconic screenshots from 40 famous movies. After that, I chose my favorite movie of the bunch, which was Into The WildAs most people know, the film concludes with the main character starving to death in the Alaskan wilderness. At no point throughout the film was there any notion that he wanted to return home, which led me to my screen-cap.

For those who are fans of the film, I hope you enjoy it! For those who have not seen it, I apologize for the spoiler.
