Sleepy Kitty

The first assignment I did was Animated Pet.

“Take a picture of your pet, and make an animated GIF from the photo.”

make animated gifs like this at MakeAGif
I choose this assignment because it seemed like a good warm up for the week, Teddy is my most willing photo subject and I already knew how to make a GIF from a few weeks ago when I made an Uptown Girls GIF. The story is just about my sleepy cat, who apparently can be comfortable in any position. He can fall asleep in a weird pose and then 30 seconds later, he will be jumping off the walls, playing unroll the toilet paper (one of his favorites) and climbing the screen door, I hear this is normal from other kitten owners, but I’m hoping there will be more sleeping and less terrorizing in the future.
I made this GIF the same way I made the one a few weeks ago:
  • Taking some pics of Ted
  • Uploading those pics to makeagif.com
  • reordering the shots
  • clicking continue
  • and then grabbing the link

3 Stars- Returning to the Scene of the Crime

Snowy winter vs Warm fall

This was a picture that I took back during the snowstorm that happened my freshman year (January 2010?).  It was taken right outside of Seacobeck dining hall.  I had never actually realized how much has changed in the 2-ish years that have passed since then.  That bush that was covered in snow is no longer there (actually it may have been an evergreen tree, but it’s still not there anymore).

I had a lot of trouble getting the perspective right.  I just couldn’t find the exact spot where I stood that made the picture like that.  All that being said, I really enjoy the nature of this photo and the stark contrast between a snowy winter and a warm autumn day.

7/10 Stars down, 3 to go!

Oh So Edgy

I thought for sure for this assignment I was going to have to crop together a bunch of random letters to create my name, but I forget sometimes how popular my name has become over recent years (especially with movie stars like Emma Stone, and Emma Watson having the same first name as me). So, randomly stumbled upon my name yesterday (Saturday, the 29th). It was in a Glamour magazine that had Emma Watson on the cover. This obviously isn’t the cover, so, lo-and-behold, this also captures me in my boredom and the reason for why I flipped through a magazine to begin with (I try to avoid these things all together; they are full of so much annoying, and unrealistic shit). I got really excited when I saw my name (without her last name immediately proceeding it) and snapped the photo. Naturally, I had to get the entire title of the article because it makes me sound so cool (and edgy, haha). I tried to leave out the subtitle–it had her whole name in it–thus, is why the picture is at a weirdish angle. Anyways, I thought it looked cool. And finding my name is always a fun thing to do. It’s one of the reasons I really like the word dilemma. I wish I could’ve found that in an advertisement somewhere. But this will have to do.

Over and out.

Mayani Bird Sanctuary

Mayani Bird Sanctuary Album Cover

First of all, I really enjoyed doing this assignment. I liked the randomness of it, and I liked the room for creativity that it allowed me. So, how did I result in this vundabar album cover? Let me tell you.

After extracting the random picture/album title/band name that I was going to be using, which I did on the actual page for the assignment, I started by editing the picture because that was going to be the background for the whole thing. By the way, my random things fit very well together, I think. I imagine a a hipster, indie band of sorts. Anyways, I saved the image, and then I wanted to achieve a kind of pixely look, so once I saved it, I snapped the photo onto my iPhone directly from the computer screen. I don’t know if you’ve ever done this, but it ends up making any picture you take look pixely. It’s weird that it does it, but sometimes, in cases such as this, it can make things look pretty sweet. From there I used an app on my phone, Photoshop Express (a free app; it’s cool, but it doesn’t have all the cool features like the one you can pay for does; it makes editing photos really easy though). I changed the colors of the original photo. And then emailed the photo to myself to call it a day. From there I used paint to add the captions (the band’s name and the album title). I chose a pixely font for the band’s name to go with the theme of it, but I wanted something different for the album title–because I wanted to break up the pixel look, and because it was hard to see the black font of the pixel font on any other part of the cover. I cropped down the size of the picture so that it looked more album cover sized, and uploaded it to flickr, and is the image that you now see above. LOVE it.

Ami Mizuno presents: Sailor Moon and the Gender of Power

Ami's TED Talk

I watched the most incredible TED talk last night. It was led by this super-intelligent Japanese high school student named Ami Mizuno. She was talking about the superheroine group the Sailor Senshi and how they reflect a more feminist, egalitarian and shame-free view of femininity, especially in the ways that femininity relates to literal power and personal agency.

Needless to say I was floored.

Crafting my Fantasy TED Talk ended up being really fun. : D I’ll take any excuse I can get to return to a favorite story.

To say that Sailor Moon was a formative show for me is kind of an understatement. I idolized those characters as a kid, I drew them constantly, tried to figure out which of the girls I’d get along with the best. It was my gateway anime, and from there I devoured every other anime and manga I could get my hands on. As I’ve grown older Sailor Moon has only become more fascinating and important to me (although I can no longer listen to the English dubs without crying). There’s the fact that Sailor Moon teaches girls that there’s no “right” way to be a woman, that all kinds of girls can be friends with each other. It teaches girls that love, supportive relationships and dogged determination in the face of challenges are essential to a successful life. There’s the fact that the princess rescues her prince nine times out of ten and everyone treats it as perfectly acceptable because duh, Sailor Moon is the moon princess, of course she’s more powerful than Tuxedo Mask. That’s a pretty major reversal from… oh, every other story ever. There’s the fact that Sailor Moon includes fully-developed queer characters and constantly plays with the idea of gender (to the point of having characters who can change their physical sex in the anime).

And then there’s the final, ultimate awesome thing about this show: it clearly broadcasts the message that girls’ feelings, their relationships, and everything that makes them girls is powerful. Powerful enough to save the entire galaxy, and without ever taking on an affect that is ascribed to “masculinity.” The Senshi fight painful, bloody battles and die for the people they love, they face impossible odds again and again, and they do it in heels and miniskirts (which none of them are ever shamed for wearing). In a culture that frequently tells women that the only way for them to be “powerful warriors” is by developing a sudden aversion to anything feminine, that anything a woman feels should be monitored in case she’s being “hysterical” or a “crazy bitch,” that viciously criticizes what they wear or how they look no matter WHAT they look like, Sailor Moon stands up and says, “You’re a girl and you are AWESOME.”

Obviously, I have a LOT of feelings about this show. My dream TED talk would have to be someone going into detail about all the points I made earlier, as well as Sailor Moon’s shortcomings (body image, anyone?), and ends by discussing what it can teach us about how we write stories for and about women and girls.

When I had to choose a fictional character to lead the panel, I of course went with Ami, the brains of the Sailor Senshi. While computers and mathematics are her strong suit, I’ve no doubt she would be amazing giving a talk on anything, including feminism in pop culture–and of course,  nobody would ever guess that she’s really talking about her best friends and fellow warriors.

An Attempt to Darken the Mood

Switch up the Mood

Although we read left-to-right, suspend reality for a second. The picture on the right is the original, and I used GIMP to darken things up a bit, using mostly the Brightness-Contrast and Hue-Saturation tools. Here is the finished product! It looks overcast, although, its hard to make flowers look foreboding :(

20 Seconds of Mystery

(From Is That A…Ghost? assignment: Take a photo in which there is a ghost like subject by either using a long exposure or 2 different pictures in a photo editing software. 3-stars/10 current: 8)

This was taken at 33mm f/32, ISO-1600, 20 seconds with Sheila during a trying moment of the night where we all started getting a little bored and loopy.  The photo has not been digitally manipulated since.  Long exposures are easy to manipulate late at night under the light of a lamp.  Long exposures are so much fun!  I often shoot with aperture priority in the daytime and the shutter priority at night.

(The A-Z Photo Collage from the assignment: Make an alphabetically themed collage. Compile images to represent each letter of the alphabet within a chosen subject area or theme. Create a collage.  3-stars/10, current total: 5)

Some of these are a stretch, but:
Ear [of corn], Nikon, artist, zinnia, boots, map, hay, racing, vip status for horses, tail, kettle corn, cactus fries, water, xylophone [orchestra], quenched thirst, deer horns, inflatables, sheep, goat, yellow balloons, ox, udders, firetrucks, lock, jungle.

I used Picasa under the collage mode and didn’t have a lot of control when organizing and arranging the photos.  All photos were taken at the Bloomsburg Fair in Bloomsburg, PA because of the opportunity to go to PA and also because it provides enough space.

Ambulance to Zombies

Another exciting visual assignment for week five, “A-Z Photo Collage“. The objective is to create an alphabetical collage with a theme. My theme is ME! You could probably learn a WHOLE lot about me, who I am, and what I like by viewing my collage…

This one was actually the most time-consuming of the assignments I did this week, I guess that’s why it deserved 3 stars! It took time getting the photos, resizing them, and then making the file fit here on the page. I also enjoyed brainstorming what to use before I started the project…got stuck on a few, but the girlfriend helped me out! Do you know them all?

WOOHOO! MADE IT TO TEN STARS FOR THE WEEK!

Godzilla versus Yam

Yam Yarn

This is Godzilla, a hero of mine, vanquishing his foe, the diabolical Yam. Why does a Yam have arms you ask? Foolishness! How else would a Yam climb to the top of a municipal building?

As far as the creative process here, I can’t claim to have done much to this picture, other than the addition of the yam of course.

On the issue of full disclosure, I am actually quite fond of yams, roasted yams in particular. Good on you Godzilla, roasting that yam for thanksgiving consumption. Pass the marshmallows.
