Tutorial: Word Cloud

Behold! A completed Word Cloud assignment made using Puck’s Epilogue from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

But Mimi how did you make it?

Gather around and let me teach you all my ways.

1. For starters,  I searched around for word cloud generators. The one listed on the assignment page did not work for me, What I ended up using was this site. It’s actually a children’s site but it works really well.

2. Once you get to the site, scroll down and there should be this big box that says “WordClouds”

And in little tiny letters at the bottom it says “click to start.” You want to click that.

Why am I so small?

3. After clicking to start, you should see another box. But this box says Type or paste words here.

Do exactly that. Type or paste words into the box. And then click the arrow in the bottom right hand corner.

4. After hitting the arrow you will be taken to a randomly generated word cloud of your text.

You could call this done, but the assignment says “Choose a font and color scheme that reflects the emotion behind your choice of words.” So a little editing is required.

5. Above the cloud you just generated, there will be an editing bar.

Edit Time

There are six editing tools.

  • The first is word count. If you click this you can determine how many words show up in your cloud.
  • Second is the word filter. When this filter is on it will omit common english words (like the, a, etc etc). Off allows them to be in the cloud
  • Randomize is exactly what it sounds like. It will keep your text but randomize everything about it (The color, font, text style)
  • Color allows you to change the color of your word cloud. Both the text and background are changeable.
  • Layout lets you change the way the word cloud words are structured. Sideways? Up and Down? It’s up to you to decide.
  • And last is Font. Font lets you change the font to something that fits for your work.

For mine I decided to go with a bold font and summery colors to fit with the summer faerie theme of a midsummer night’s dream

6. Finally you’re going to want to share your work on your blog. After you’ve decided you’re happy with how it looks you can screen cap it (you’ll need to figure out how your computer does screencaps) or just save it to your computer. This site allows you to do this. Simply hover over the three line icon on the far left of the edit bar. You’ll get a drop down menu.

Hit save and save your wordcloud to your computer.
And that’s it. Enjoy your fancy word art! (/^?^)/

Peace or War

I decided to go a little easier for my second GIF, just text.  Peace or War.  Displaying PEACE on a white background for a calm feeling and WAR in red font and on a black background to really make you feel the effect of WAR.

I used GIMP to create this animated text as well!  Again, I spent a lot of time learning how to create GIFs and actually making them work.

Same thing here, it doesn’t work as the thumbnail, but if you click on it you can see the animation.

PeaceWar

Starry Night

I began by picking to Animate a Classic Painting…Starry Night.  This was by far the hardest assignment yet!  I’ve never even had to think about making an animated GIF.  I spent four hours trying to figure out how to get GIMP to work and export my working GIF…no luck!  I took a very long break and came back with a clear mind.  Thanks to a YouTube video by GIMPMastering, I was able to figure out I needed to optimize my GIF first!  Then voila, it worked!  (They do work, but for some reason you have to click on the image to see the animation.)

StarryNightColor

So after that simple solution, I was determined to make my first go at this work.  And I did, quickly!  So I’m including that one too.

Color schemes

I thought this photo captured plenty of rich colors. From the Florida palmetto trees, to the contrast in uniforms, it seems like a vivid blend and assortment. 21

Love at first shot

Here is a pic of two french children exchanging their first gift to each other. Around this time they begin to play a game that they can only say “game” too. Meaning they have to say yes I am game to do that. Essentially it is truth or dare with out the truth. As they grow into their twenties they continue this game they started with each other as children, one time he dared her not to come around for a year, and once she dared him to not come around for ten. They both did it. After spending years apart from the person they truly love they come back together (second photo) and decide they do not ever want to go a day with out seeing each other again (just like when they were school children).

Where did she go?

What happened, This Assignment is Suspect! She’s beautiful, she’s drinking a glass of wine and having a great time. She was last seen with the Ghosts of Fredericksburg, pulling away from the tour in her horse drawn buggy. We found a potential weapon next to the sign where she pulled away. I’m not sure if that’s blood or just strawberry jam….we’ll bag it and tag it anyways. 48 hours later, our suspect posted a nice relaxing picture of them lying on the beach enjoying a nice cold beverage. FOUND!

I searched through my wedding photos to find some fun pictures of my wife and our experiences in Fredericksburg, trying to think of an interesting twist to us going away on our honeymoon. I used word to insert the photos, adding connecting lines and text boxes.

Love at First Shot

image

Abandoned as a young girl left to fend for herself from one foster home to the next, she grew up, in all the wrong directions, way to fast. Her bad choices, from lack of guidance, love, and wisdom caused her heart to harden, her character to become bitter and pessimistic, and her mind to disregard any thoughts of dreaming or thinking there was anything more for her out there. Time went on and the struggles continued, but she kept going like a lifeless robot. After all, there was no point in behaving any other way because there was nothing else for her.

However, one day a boy walked into her life and little did she know, but her life was actually going to change. This boy was completely opposite of her. He was opptimisitc and dreamed all day. These differences caused the two to not get along at first, but the boy saw through the girl’s hardened edge. Eventually, he broke through that rough edge and when that happened, the girl for the first time in her life experienced happiness. They explored the world and her mind now flowing with dreams, she expressed them to her found happiness freely and joyfully.
