Please Bring Honour to Us All (Say It Like the Peanut Butter Assignment)

The next component of my final project I worked on was visual. I decided to go back and revisit the “Say It Like the Peanut Butter” assignment we had to do during week 3 of ds106. I forgot how to make a GIF, so I had to go back and look at Jim Groom’s tutorial again. Thank goodness his is really detailed!

First, I got this video off of YouTube using PwnYouTube:

And then I opened it with MPEG Streamclip, and trimmed it so I just had the scene I wanted. Next, I saved the scene as photos, and opened them as several layers on GIMP. After doing a couple of tweaking here and there, I ended up with my GIF! Here it is:

This assignment wasn’t really as hard as I remembered… Maybe it’s because I’m getting better at this ds106 stuff? (: Anyways, again, let me know what you think in the comments below!

Monkey Makeover**

In order for those lovely lady monkeys to look b.e.a.yoo-tee-ful for George, they underwent a makeover via the visual assignment, Make Up Your Pet.

Using Picasa, I opened the photos in Creative Kit and used the decorate tool to add “makeup” to the lady monkeys.  Honestly, it just looks so hilarious and weird at the same time. I’m still not sure what to think about it. But, it served its purpose, and I was able to transform these drab monkeys into model monkeys.

George’s New Look**

This quick and easy visual assignment, Switch Up the Mood, allowed me to spruce up Curious George’s profile picture for his dating site. I used Picasa to edit the photo and take from this:

Since it’s a cartoon picture, there wasn’t as much I could have done with it, had it been a “real” photo.  I think it adds some class to George’s image ;)

Taylor on Tour

For my sixth assignment for my final I choose GIF Animate Your Day Like Ben.  This assignment is to capture key moments each as an animated GIF – as you go through a day look around and identify places, moments, things that are well represented in the infinite looping form.

For my assignment I choose to follow Taylor Swift around on a normal day.  Luckily Taylor’s “normal days” aren’t really that normal.  I decided to take videos from Taylor’s red tour and make them into gifs.  I looked up videos of her tour on youtube to find my videos.  Going though and trying to find ones that were good quality was quite difficult.  I had to search for a while until I found ones I was happy with.  I ended up finding videos from her songs Sparks Fly, her opening speech, Treacherous, State of Grace, and I Knew You Were Trouble.

To make my gifs I used this tutorial form the ds106 handbook.  While I had made gifs before, it had been a long time so I had to refresh myself.  I mainly used mpeg stream clip and and gimp for this assignment.

Here are my gifs I came up with. I sure wish this was an average day for me.

Look at Me Now

For my second assignment for our final project I did Not Quite Norma Jeane. This assignment is to remake this classic Marilyn Monroe “expressions sheet” with self-portraits or with the aid of a friend.  Were going to call Taylor my friend for this one.

To do this assignment I used the collage section of picmonkey. It is a quite simple program to use and you can just drag and place the pictures that you want in the spot that you’d like them.

To get my pictures for this assignment I started off on google images.  I was trying to find pictures of Taylor not looking like herself.  After I few minutes of searching I remembered her I Knew You Were Trouble music video that she recently released.  In this video Taylor is dressed much more emo/goth than usual and she has short hair with pink streaks which you can see right below

I then started doing a google image search to try to find pictures of her in this music video.  After having a hard time finding a good variety, I ended up just watching the video on a high definition setting and taking screen shots of it.  This proved to be much easier and gave me the freedom that I was looking for.

Here is my final collage.  Not exactly the Taylor you’d expect right?  Any ideas where my project could be going??

Never Grow Up

One of our final ds106 assignments was to make up two of our own assignments.  For my first one I actually decided to use an assignment that I had already kind of made up previously.  Back in design week I started doing an assignment and kind of got carried away making it my own (you can see the original post here).  I got way off the original assignment and decided to start over and do the assignment how it was originally intended.  At the time I was quite annoyed at myself because it meant I had twice as much work to do, now I am quite thrilled because I get to recycle my mistake into something new.  I really loved what I had made previously so I am excited I get to bring it back.

So this assignment is called my favorite lyric. In this assignment you are to pick your favorite lyric from a song and make it into something visual. You can do this by picking a background image that gives off the same feeling that the song does and layer the lyrics over it.  Since this came from a pretty creative and free place for me, I wanted people who did this assignment to feel the same way.  The main goal is to make the final product evoke the same feeling as the lyric of the song.

For mine I decided to do the song Never Grow Up by Taylor Swift.  This song is super pretty and always evokes some kind of emotion in me when I listen to it (especially right now when I am only a few weeks away from graduating).  I choose the lyric “even though you want to, please try to never grow up” as the specific lyric in the song to make my visual for.

While I was playing around I ended up putting this simple picture of a little girl as my background.  I felt like this little girl displayed happiness and innocence that I relate to childhood.   I then started to add in the words.  At first I just was trying to lay them on the picture, but I then decided I wanted to mount them on something first.  I decided to use notebook paper as that mount. I opened the notebook paper into a new page and cropped it to be the size and shape that I wanted and then just copied it in over by background. I did this for each set of words that I had on my background.  I then added my words using the text tool.  I played around a lot with the angles, fonts and size of everything before finding something that I really liked.  I am pretty thrilled with how this came out.

Here is my final product.  I hope you enjoy and have fun with this assignment!!

10-Step Challenge

For one of the assignments that I submitted for the assignment bank was the 10-Step Photo Challenge.

I saw this on a site once and thought it was a great idea for an assignment.

The task:  Take ten steps in any direction and with each step take one photo. Think about angles and lighting to create interesting photographs. Don’t forget the Rule of Thirds! Create a collage in a photo editor.

This is my product:

10-Step Challenge

I went to Monroe Hall and stood on the steps. From there, I took ten steps and with each step I took a photo at a different angle.

My goal was not to create 10 distinct photos but to create a vision of what I see when I step out on those steps every Tuesday/Thursday. I’m feeling sentimental…

I hope students enjoy this assignment like I did!

Assignment Wizard

Apart of this week’s work was to also finish out our contributions to the class and really make our marks! An essential way that we had to do this was through creating assignments for future classes, which was way more exciting than I thought it would be! Actually, my first assignment was made awhile ago because I had been anticipating this so it’s awesome that I finally go to submit it.

ASSIGNMENT #1(VIDEO): The first assignment I submitted was a Survival video! This idea came to me when my mom told me that she would never be able to survive as a freshmen in college because it is so different than when she was younger. So, I took this opportunity to make her video of some important things that would potentially help her survive her freshmen year if she had to go through it again. I made this four star’s just because it takes a lot more creativity than most would think. I just happen to have an ah-ha! moment that really helped me but I hope when people see my video, they also have those ah-ha moments that make the assignment easier. However, for those who don’t, that’s why I wanted it to be four star’s.

The day we went on a roller coaster!

ASSIGNMENT #2(VISUAL): The second assignment I created as Adventure In A Day! Which only came to me after my friends and I were fooling around on my photobooth, pretending we were underwater, or going to Paris for the day. So I figured, almost every computer, or smartphone, has some sort of way to put themselves in a background to make it seem like they went on an ‘adventure’ for the day. Apart of the assignment is to also create a story around it, which is two star’s. However, if you make the effort to take multiple pictures and create a bigger storyline, than I would add a star for that extra effort and creativity!

IRL Emojis: Tutorial & Prodcut

In order to put all the different pictures inside the same file, I first opened all the files inside Photoshop. Then I selected every picture and pasted them on the file that was going to be my final photo or collage. Each picture must go  in a different layer, so you can arrange them how you the want.
