Tis [not] the Season! *

To continue on my Visual Assignment quest, I did a one star worthy assignment today from the ds106 Assignment Bank.  I randomly chose the assignment, Winterize It!, which requires the winterizing of a photo from the summer.

I wanted to make it very realistic, so I googled how to add snow to a photo.  A set of directions popped up to use GIMP, which I already had, so I decided to follow those.  Unfortunately, after about 30 minutes of creating layers and screening them over the original photo, the end result wasn’t what I wanted, so I scratched all that.

Instead, I  opened the photo in Picasa which then lead me to open it in Picnik.  Picnik allowed me to add Santa hats to each of the people in the photo.  Here’s the original photo:

And this is what it looked like after I added the Santa hats:

To find a much easier way of adding snow, I googled adding snow to a photo again, and looked down further.  I stumbled upon a website, Lunapic, that does it for you once you upload your photo.  After that, I saved it to my computer and uploaded it to Flickr.

Tis [not] the Season

Although it turned out much faker than I originally wanted, it gets the point across and after failing in GIMP, I just wanted it to be done!

Online Sketching

For this assignment we had to turn a photograph into a sketch.  Here’s what I ended up with.

Cartooned

I had an app on my phone called Picture Effects Magic that has various filters to change the picture.  I used the lighter picture again because it was an interesting photo.  Then I loaded it into flickr from my phone and that was it.  Then I decided I wanted to add more and did all of these…

Switching the Mood

This was a tough assignment.  We were supposed to edit a picture to change the mood of the photo.  Here’s my attempt.

before and after

The one on the right was the before picture.  To change the photo, I messed around with the contrast, hue, etc.  I’m not really sure how I did it honestly, I just played around.  I think the final photo ended up looking old and worn, which definitely changes the feel of the photo.

Who Said That?

So this assignment was to take 3 pieces–a quote, a picture, and a name–and mix them all together.  You can read more about it here.

Ben Stiller quote

This was my final product.  I couldn’t decide what to do for a while and ended up deciding on a Zoolander quote because it’s my favorite movie and who doesn’t love a good movie quote?  Then I narrowed that down to “I’m not an ambi-turner” because it’s one of the most memorable of the movie.  Then, for a while, I tried to think of another movie similar to Zoolander.  There aren’t any.  I thought another Ben Stiller movie would be just fine and then the whole thing ended up being a big Ben Stiller mashup.

As for putting the whole thing together, I used Gimp.  I googled White Goodman for the picture.  I chose this one because it had lots of space to put words on it.  Then I used the text editor and added in the quotes, finally picking Tony Perkis, the counselor from Heavy Weights, as the quoted character.  The rest is history.

Splish Splash Color

Another really fun 2 star assignment- Splash the color! I’ve always wondering who once does this. Apparently you can do it in Photoshop, but I don’t have that on my computer. I looked under the “tutorial” section and noticed that former ds106er Anapaula downloaded iSplash Free on her Iphone to complete this assignment. So I did the same.

After downloading it, I started playing around with the program. It’s simple to use. My only “complaint” is that you have to use your finger on the phone screen (obvisiously) and so if you want to do small detailed pictures you most likely will “color outside the lines” and it’s really difficult to make it “perfect”. I’m sure if you used Photoshop, it’s less of a problem.

So I got so into it that I completely zoned out in the library (embarrassing!) I was listening to Pandora and just played around with pictures for a good 20 minutes! So I have several examples. A few I had some trouble with the “coloring outside the lines”, but I think overall they turned out very well for using a phone app!

I have the cutest story about this older (both in their 90s) couple. Married for 72 years and have never had a cross word with one another (according to her). She has alzheimer’s, he does not. Yet, he moved into the memory care unit when she did so they could stay together. That is true and unconditional love! They are both the sweetest! They live in the same unit as my grandmother, that’s how I know them!

This is at a Target in Lancaster, PA. It just made me laugh and smile! I love that the Amish go to Target!

Of course Maggie had to make an appearance!

I made ornaments for my friends as part of their Christmas gifts!

Assignment 4 – Splash the colour

I’ve had a bit of a DS106 lull for the last couple of weeks. I had a bit of a schedule shake up with my partner being injured, but she is on the mend now and I am getting myself back on track. I struggle getting into routines, which I suspect is a common thing really. One day at a time I return to the productive day activities as opposed to staring blankly at Facebook.

As luck would have it I noticed a visual assignment done on the blog Amateur Hour here. I am still avoiding the video and animated gif assignments. I’m believing that it’s going to take me a long time to get one done and that I’ll lose interest. It is a big fat don’t know really, I could really love it so maybe I’ll try next time.

This assignment is called Splash the color it is a two star assignment inspired by the girl in the red dress in the film Schindler’s List. In the film she is the instrument of conscience or awakening for Schindler. He identifies with her as she moves alone through the jewish ghetto as people are being murdered around her and awakens to the inhumanity and atrocities happening around her. She transforms him from a detached observer into a human witnessing the suffering of other humans that cannot be denied. He looses sight of her as she hides in a building but she returns later on in the story but this time she is dead.

The page linked to the story of the girl here believes that the story is based upon a true story told at the trial of Adolf Eichmann told by Gavriel Bach (Assistant Prosecutor at the time). Bach questioned Dr Martin Foldi who described his experience of the selection process Auschwitz. Incredibly the session tapes for this trial are available on youtube which I think is quite amazing. I decided to have a look at session 1.

It is unsettling to watching someone who has been responsible for the murder of millions of people. What unsettles me most is that he just looks like an ordinary man. In fact he is an ordinary man, one who committed horrendous crimes. He looks on from inside his glass box at the court accusing him of crimes against humanity with quiet detachment. Bach, 50 years on reflects on his experience of the trial in which he also mentions the story of the girl in the red coat.

Wikipedia also mentions unintended similarities to the story of the girl in the red coat in the movie, to that of Roma Ligocka, a survivor who in 1940 was taken to the Krakow Ghetto with her mother. She wrote the novel The girl in the Red Coat.

With that story in mind I found it quite difficult to find an image that I thought would be a modern equivalent of this. Finally I settled on an image I took during Chinese New Year in 2008 It’s an image of a young boy poking himself through the barriers along Charing Cross Rd in London trying to see the parade coming towards him. Although this image is taken during a celebration the metal barriers the boy pokes himself through gives the feeling of containment, of ordinary people being organized and ‘controlled’ by authorities. the boy is the only face in focus and his slightly pensive expression I think adds to the atmosphere.

I used photoshop to create this image turning the original photo black and white then with a layer mask painted the colour back in to the boy and his dragon. As a half chinese person who grew up listening to the adults around me talk about the horrors the Chinese suffered at the hands of the Japanese there is for me a more personal connection with this story of the girl in the red dress and this image. I don’t doubt that my reason for finally choosing it is my childhood memories of being told about the millions of chinese who were murdered. As a mixed race child I can also remember asking what would happen if it happened again and being told that I would probably end up in a camp as I was not ‘pure’. So I suppose for me there is something of that memory in this image too.

Color Splash

This one was cool.  I ended up just stumbling across this assignment even though it was one of the suggested ones for the week.

lighter

Really not that hard to do.  Took me a little time to think of something to take a picture of and then thinking of a good background.  I ended up picking the lighter because it was bright and would really jump out against a background.  Then I decided on the side of my front porch because I thought it was an interesting background because there was a lot going on.  The angle of the shot took me a while to figure out because I wanted to get as little of the wall and as much of the background as I could.  Getting the size of the lighter was important too.

After all that, I loaded it into Gimp into two different frames.  I made the one frame black and white with the color adjustments and the other one I used to cut out the orange color of the lighter.  After cutting the orange out, I copied that into another picture so I could remove the BIC label for no apparent reason.  I just wanted to.  Then I copied everything I had left, and pasted it into the black and white frame, moving it around so it fit right on the image.  And that was it.

Be My Valentine

This is my valentine’s day visual assignment!

ds106valentine

All I did here was take the photo from the bank, and uploaded it into Gimp.  Then I just used the text tool to add it into the bottom, resized the text, moved it around so it fit, and that was it.

The timing is just perfect for this Valentine’s Day caption challenge assignment. First of all, it’s only Tuesday and I already love visual week. Second of all, I love Valentine’s Day! I started this assignment from downloading my valentine card from this Flickr set. It was hard to only pick one, but somehow I came to this one and knew exactly what I was going to do. I added the caption and uploaded it straight to WordPress because I linked my Flickr and WordPress together.

Happy Valentine’s Day my fellow DS 106ers! {I hope you don’t have a Valentine like this guy in your life!}

Cannon Ball [splash]!

To continue my Visual Assignments quest, I chose a 2 star assignment called Splash the Color, from the ds106 Assignment Bank.  I used to dabble in color splashing on my iPhone (just for fun), so I already had the App to do this assignment.

I chose the photo I wanted to color splash by finding a subject that was very vibrant and would stand out against a black and white background.  This is the original photo:

Color Birds

I emailed the photo to myself so that I could have it on my iPhone and saved it to my camera roll.

I opened the photo in the app Color Splash and painted the birds to be color and the background to be black and white.  I then saved the final product to my camera roll, emailed it to myself, opened it on my computer, and uploaded it to Flickr.  Et voilà!

Finally, I had to share my blog via Twitter!
