Motorcycle Race, Supercuts

Motorcycle Race

I created this super thrilling super cut of motorcycle race from different movies. I included both Hollywood and Bollywood movie scenes. I chose to do a video of motorcycles is because I am just fascinated by them :) . I have always wanted to own and drive one!

To complete this assignment, I downloaded seven videos from YouTube (using keepvid.com). Finally, I imported the videos into Premiere software and edited the videos.

Learn To Draw In 10 Steps

Welcome to my DS106 Tutorial on how to create a drawing! If you’re unfortunate, like myself, and don’t have Photoshop, don’t sweat it. This quick tutorial is going to make using GIMP as easy as possible for all you new DS106ers! Now most of you may have clicked this by going through the “Draw it.” assignment and seeing the tutorials…So you must be aiming to get the 2 stars for the assignment, woohoo!

I also did this assignment, A Man and His Dog, and understand the frustrations of using GIMP and other new programs. The Internet is a big help with answers/tutorials, which also helped me with my own assignment. So relax, take a deep breath and get ready to draw!

(If you can’t wait to read and just want to follow pictures, here is a slideshow of the tutorial)

Step 1 – Start with a picture. It can be a picture of ANYTHING! That’s the best part about art, you make what YOU want! Open the picture up in GIMP.
start

Step 2 – Duplicate your layer. You can do this by right clicking on the layer in the layers window and then clicking Duplicate Layer. This is a good practice because you will always have your original photo and won’t edit over it by accident. I learned my lesson in my old Photoshop/high-school days!
start2

Step 3 – Make sure that you have your new copied layer selected in the Layers window, and then proceed to go to Colors on the toolbar. After the dropdown, select Hue/Saturation. A new window will open and you will want to drag the Hue/Lightness/Saturation bars all to the left. This will result in a seemingly black/gray image.

Step 4 – Just like in Step 2, we are going to Duplicate the black/gray layer from Step 3.
pic3

Step 5 & 6- Making sure you have your newest copy(should be the top black/gray layer) selected in the Layers window, go to Filters, down to Blur, and then select Gaussian Blur. This is just a generic blur that I used. (If you wish to play around with GIMP or your drawing assignment, select another blur and see what you get!) A box will appear and you will want to select how much of a blur you would like to apply. I chose 5, but once again, you can get creative!

Step 7 – Continuing to use the same layer, go to Colors. Then choose Invert.

Step 8 – After you invert, you need to change the Opacity of that layer to 50%. This is located near the top of where your layers are located. Once you change the Opacity, you will then right click the layer in the Layers window and choose Merge Down.
pic6

Step 9 – Great, now you have a gray blob. What do you do with a gray blob?? Duplicate that layer as you have done with previous layers.
pic7

Step 10 – Lastly, go to the top of your Layers window. With the newest copied layer selected, change the Mode to Dodge.

This should result in a “drawn” looking image! Congrats on receiving your 2 stars! Now go blog about your creation and don’t forget to mention me! On my final image, I wanted it to have sharper edges and more “drawn” looking qualities, so I played around in GIMP until I was satisfied. Have fun creating!

Remix An Album – Buddy Holly

For this assignment students were to remix an album cover. I decided to take a minimalists approach to Buddy Holly’s, “That’ll Be The Day.” Originally the album Holly standing infront of the sunset, today that would be kinda cliche. So instead I decided to see if simple is really better.

However, I hade two variations and could not decide which one was better, so I uploaded both.

Establish Capitalism

For this week’s assignment I decided to do the “Create Your Owen SuperPAC” assignment. Using WNYC’s generator I was assigned the PAC, “Establish Capitalism.” For this assignment the only group of people that I could think of to represent my cause was Don Draper and the cast of Mad Men.

So, if it’s success your looking for, look no further.

Today’s a GIFt

Today’s a GIFt

“Create a GIF of at least 3 things you’ve done in a day, it can be a mundane day of things like waking up, going to school and watching tv, or an exciting day when you won an award, accomplished something you’ve been working towards, or traveled somewhere new.”

A made a GIF of a day in Rome:

make animated gifs like this at MakeAGif

I made this assignment! This is a day in Rome.. I think… the days kind of run together so maybe it was two days, but I went to the Catacombs, the Colosseum and ended the day with a nice flaming shot at my hostile :) I’m thinking it was actually the afternoon of one day that I went to the Catacombs and the next morning I went to the Colosseum because I remember Rome was a huggeee city that was very difficult to get around not knowing the ins and outs of their public transportation system. We had to use the metro (which only has two lines) and a bus to get the the Catacombs and luckly another group we were sitting near was going there too otherwise we would have be lost in the middle of downtown Rome. I think the Colosseum was easier to get to, it is one of the most common attractions so there was better signs haha. The bar was on the main floor of our hostile, which was awesome because trying to navigate Rome after a night of drinking probably would not have ended well.

I made this GIF by going to makeagif.com, clicking add pictures, selecting pictures, reordering them, clicking continue, choosing the speed slowest, and clicking continue again.

New Assignment Idea: Makeup your pet!

I knew I wanted my assignment idea to involve some sort of animal. I feel there need to be more animal related assignments for ds106. I came up with the idea of “Makeup your pet”.

It involves taking a picture of your pet and painting “makeup” on him/her. I do not necessarily recommend actually putting makeup on your pet, as this can be harmful/a bit cruel to your pet. The idea of the assignment is to use your creativity and makeup your pet in any way you want!

I chose my dog Lilo and decided to use pixlr to paint her up! I added on eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara and eyelashes, blush, lipstick and even a little bow!

New Visual Assignment

From Dark to Light or Light to Dark

Take a picture in a dark setting or light setting and then open it in any photo editor to make it look lighter or darker. Be creative!

DS106 Assignment

I rated this assignment one star because this was a quick and easy assignment that anyone can do.

I did the assignment and my example is the one shown on the assignment page.  For this assignment I first found a picture that had really good lighting.  It is the picture on the right hand side shown above.  After that I then opened up photoshop editer and uploaded the picture there.  I then changed the exposure and lighting on the picture to make it look darker.  And then I put the before and after images together to make the image shown above.

Create an assignment: Winterize it!

The idea for this assignment came from the environment around me! It has clearly started to get colder and the christmas music has started to make its appearance.  I thought the perfect assignment would be to take an old photo, preferably one from the summer or spring and convert it into a winter themed photo, snowman and all!!!

To create the example for this assignment I found a picture that was taken over the summer of my friend and I.
Pre Assignment Winterization
I
then uploaded the picture onto picmonkey.com and used such editing tools as winterizer, where it added snow, gloves, hats, and a snowman to the picture. I then adjusted the color of the photo to make it look colder. I did this by lowering the “temperature” of the photo, which can be done under the color edit link in picmonkey.com.  The end product was a winterized summer photo that now prepares me slightly for winter!

Winterize it! (Not given stars yet)
http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/winterize-it/
Take a picture from summer and winterize it! Using photoshop or an online photo editor such as picmonkey.com lighten the color to make the temperature appear cooler, add scarves, snow flakes, or even a snowman! Use your imagination and take a photo from another season and turn it into a winter theme to prepare for the winter season ahead.

No Pulp Fiction

For the longest while after watching Pulp Fiction I had no idea what the title “Pulp Fiction” ment. It want until after I read it’s Wikipedia page that I learnt it was a reference to Pulp Magazine, a publication that was known for their stories. But heres an alternate meaning to Pulp Fiction.

Where are the wild things?

In this assignment we were required to remix a children’s book, using another cultural artifact. The book I choose was Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, and I used the culture of partying to illustrate a double meaning to the word wild.

In creating this piece I took the original book cover and created multiple layer above it adding props such as hats, cups, and fire. Then using the curves tool, adjusted the lighting so that it looked somewhat natural.
