Is that my face?

My favorite assignment so far.. Picasso Yourself!  For this assignment I used my super silly boyfriend and the ever-so-amazing Macbook Photobooth.

With this assignment came a lot of laughter! There are sooo many effects that you can make using photobooth (which comes as an app for any Mac computer owner).

I used “Strech” effect to make my face, and my boyfriends face all distorted.  We laugh for a good 5 minutes after every picture we took.  I felt that this effect was as close as I could get to Picasso’s Cubism.  Cubism basically involved distortion of images, in particular faces and I present that in my photograph.

The beauty about photobooth and my MacBook is that the camera on my laptop is of a pretty good quality and photobooth takes amazing pictures so not much editing had to be done on the photo.  I did have to crop the picture and I just did an auto enhancer and ta-da!  It came out to look super silly all on its own.  Gotta love art!

Sketch it outttt

The fifth and last Visual Assingment I did for this week was titled, “Draw it.”

Sketch

This is another one that I found through the “try random one” button and I really thought it would look awesome. I really liked the picture that was used in the assignment, the lion looks SO fierce. Pictures that look like they’ve been drawn are definitely not as cool as ones that have, but I like the effect anyways. I figured I could easily take a picture of something that I thought looked cool and see how it would look if it was “drawn”. I know that there are many artists in the world, but I know personally I could never draw a lion that looked that good. I guess I feel that there are apps that help with things like that for people JUST LIKE ME.

I have a MacBook (yes I am TEAM apple…) therefore I just used my Photobooth and the “Colored Pencil” effect and took a picture of something in order for it to look “sketched”. I chose the window because I thought it looks likes something that could easily be drawn or sketched. It would be easy to imagine someone drawing a window. It was mainly my thought idea that helped me with this visual assignment because I interpreted it as something that was not too difficult to picture “drawn”. For example there are MANY drawings that occur of lions or other animals… a window isn’t anything different. I have also used this effect on pictures of me and my friends, it actually looks pretty cool. If someone wanted to do this assignment, there are many different apps that can be used. It also isn’t hard to find a picture online that you may just THINK is cool to “draw” or imagine as a picture that someone drew.

Visual Assignment #4

For this last visual assignment, I did the Troll Quotes, worth 2 stars.

Here’s the image I came up with:

hilleleannan

In the directions, it said to pick people from related universes. I chose Democrat women/politicians. My three people were Eleanor Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi. Although I am a fan of Pelosi’s faces, I chose to attribute the quote to her. With a simple google image search, I located the photo of Clinton, which happened to have the empty space. I LOVE Eleanor Roosevelt quotes; the one I used I found here. I went into Pic Monkey and chose the font, and simply typed the text into the box (it’s really simple to use). I saved the image to my desktop, and then uploaded it to flickr with only a few clicks. The hardest part was deciding what people to do…I almost did it on male detective leads (Elliot Stabler (SVU), Jethro Gibbs (NCIS), and Aaron Hotchner(Criminal Minds)).

Pumpkin Splash

Through a random search of the visual assignments I came across Splash that Color.  This assignment was very challenging.  I downloaded many different free trial programs on my computer to be able to do this color affect but it all seemed to not work.  After going back to the page and looking over at the assignment I realized that it said “You can do this in a number of ways with photo editing software or using mobile apps.”  When I read using mobile apps, a lightbulb went off.  Why hadn’t I thought about that before?? Well I got my  iPhone, and after a while of searching, and intense review reading for the perfect app, I found it!!

I downloaded an app called iSpalsh Free! Not only was it free, but it worked amazingly!  Being fall season, I decided to use the picture of the pumpkin I carved last Halloween.  I took the picture on my front porch on a cold fall day.  For the splash part of the assignment I uploaded the picture to my app, and made the whole image black and white.  After making it black and white, I had to go around and refill what I wanted to have color and what I didn’t.  This was hard for me because my fingers kept coloring outside of the pumpking which turned out to be a huge challenge.  Maybe my fingers were to big, but for some reason I could not get it to be perfect and the small imperfections showed on my picture but overall I was very happy with the turn out.

Good thing for good apps, and good phones.

Visual Assignment #3

For my third assignment, I did the Newspaper Blackout Poetry, worth 3 stars.

Here’s the image:

Newspaper Blackout Poetry

The poem reads:

“sacred representations”

murders

attempted murder

confused, angry and fearful

feel sacred figures

ubiquity of sacred images

t-shirts and bumper stickers

deadly

the path was settled

the creation to be a violation

scratched out

marched on

cross-examined

feared, warned, compelled

infallibility

waged war

burned and dismembered

defecated

avoided depicting

Washington

holy and sacred

George Washington

sacred duty

become commonplace

children

resistance

Hollywood

nothing short of blasphemy

constant source of conflict

That’s a damned lie!

violence painted

uproars

crucifix, submerged

a crusade

vaginas surrounding her

elephant dung was smeared

displayed

caused mass violence

intense conflict

a culture supersaturated

largely without violence

I think the hardest part for me was finding the right article. This one came out of the Thursday issue of the New York Times. It was about religion, which I knew would have great phrases. It was also hard to black out certain phrases and leave others, since I was using a sharpie. I just picked out phrases or words that stood out to me and then had a few people read through it to make sure it made somewhat sense (although the power of poetry is that it doesn’t always make sense.) I went with my first instincts and actually really liked the finished product. I will probably do this exercise again.

PS: my poem, because of the length of the article I chose, ended up pretty long. I don’t mind, but when choosing an article it may help to focus on shorter articles or blurbs.

In crossing

Irony always makes me laugh. So, the visual assignment of finding an unlikely intersection was fun for me. My finding needs an explanation in order to be ironic. I am closely acquainted with both a Douglas and a William. In fact, soon both will be a part of my family. William is already a family member, but, Doug will soon be marring my sister.

But wait! The irony deepens. Although Doug and William have only met once or twice, they are very similar. Both are outdoorsy guys. Hunting is probably their favorite pass time, along with fishing. William is much younger than Doug, making him quite possible Doug’s prodigy! haha.

Color splashhhhh

The third Visual Assignment I chose to do for this week was the “Splash the Color“.

Splash the Color

I liked doing this assignment because I really like things being in black and white, it’s always been one of my favorite effects. There is a really cool picture that is decorated in many different colors and I figured it would be easy to make one of the colors stick out. When the picture is not in black and white then the colors mean so much more, but having only one of the colors sticking out makes it that much cooler.

The process I used to do this was simply taking a picture of the poster that says “PEACE” hanging in my friends room. I found another iPhone app called “Dash of Color” and I basically just uploaded my picture onto the app and uncolored one of the letters. It wasn’t a very hard or long process, but I knew that the picture would look cool with just one color sticking out. If someone wanted to this assignment it would probably be just as easy. I know there are even some camera’s (like the cannon) that have the ability to just have one color sticking out. There are many different sites that do the same exact thing, I know it wouldn’t be very difficult. It may be difficult to find ONE color that sticks out most, considering many things are VERY VERY colorful.

MY NAME IS ….

The second Visual Assignment for this week that I chose to do was, “Find Yourself“.

My name Enisa

I chose to this one by clicking on the “try random one” button. I knew that it would be very difficult to find my name anywhere since it is soooooo uncommon. While working on a group project for one of my other classes, my friends suggested making letters with my name and they’d hold it up for me. I have always had issues finding anything that resembles my name and I am usually asked where my name is from and the meaning. Whenever I have wanted to find a bracelet with my name on it …. it has NEVER happened. The meaning of my name “Enisa” (from what I’ve heard and looked up) is “friendly” … So the idea of having my friends hold up my name connects everything pretty well.

I didn’t really need many tools in order to do this one, but if you have an uncommon name like me … and still want to do it… Finding letters everywhere is also a good way of approaching it. I just let my mind wander and thought about how when I was younger I always hated not having my name anywhere or in common with anyone else…. I guess until I accepted the fact that it was Unique and learned to appreciate it.

Car Lust

This Visual Assignment was to get a picture of your dream car and how that car makes you feel. This is a Lamborghini Aventador and this makes me feel happy ha. I dont know cars really dont make me feel anything but if i had this car i bet id feel pretty sweet.

Visual Assignment #2

For my second visual assignment, I decided to do the Splash the Color, worth 2 stars.
Here are my two color splashes (I had so much fun I had to do two).

Color Splash 1

This is passionflower, which looks really awesome in person.

Color Splash 2

Even though I took this photo a while ago, I love the way the red coat stands out. It’s also interesting because of the wing my sister is holding.

To color splash, I first downloaded the 30 day free trial of photoshop (which I will probably purchase the full version because I like photoshop). Then, I used this tutorial. I put in my first layer, the actual photo. Then I duplicated it and named the duplicate top layer. I then went to image-adjustments-black and white to make the top layer black and white. I used the eraser tool to remove the black and white layer, revealing the color beneath it. I had some trouble but with a couple quick undos, I was able to just focus and make the color I wanted to stand out. After that, I just saved the image and uploaded it to flickr.
