During middle school Kid Cudi was one of my favorite artists and I always blasted this song.
I really like Rent– the musical, not the economic thing. It’s set in Christmas of 1989 (yes I know I’m pushing it but it counts!). My favorite song from Rent is “La Vie Bohème”, a group number with all the main characters singing about anything and everything and life as an artist in New York. Its an amazing song and even better if you watch the choreography with it (interested? check it out!). This song has a lot of iconic quotes, some more pg than others- the title of this post being one of the pg lines. My favorite quote from Rent, however, is the line “to being an us for once, instead of a them”. This (two star, visual) assignment was to pick out a quote that stands out to us and pair it with a photo that fits with the vibe. And in all her glory, here is the final form.
So umm. I love this photo; just a pic of my friends and I hanging out and enjoying each others company (being an us!). And I love this quote; its sweet and cute and promotes some nice community and inclusion (which is 10/10)
but.
I kind of hate the end result.
Like, I am certainly just being dramatic because I am tired and otherwise stressed, but I legitimately just do not really like how this came out, but I’m not skilled enough at photo editing to make it better. I’m also not exactly sure what I specifically dislike about it. I think my issue might be how clearly edited in the words look, and the red color that I chose to be the background for the words feels out of place with the rest of the photo. However, I’m just having trouble grasping how to use all the tools and also how to paint using colors that aren’t already in my photograph (hence the weird color choice). I am going to do some basic research and training this weekend to try and figure out at least the basics, but for now this will have to do.
However, there are a few things that I do like about it. For example, I think this quote and photo go really well together. The quote, to me at least, is all about being together and close and supporting one another, rather than tearing each other down; and this photo, of me and my close friends, shows us doing exactly that. Additionally, “La Vie Bohème” is a really funky-good and fun song, and the events surrounding this- nothing sketch, just hanging out!- were very much funky-good and fun. I like the look of the smears of color behind the words, I just wish it looked more professional.
As for how I created this piece, relatively straightforward. Thought about quotes I liked, scanned through my apple notes app note of Good Quotes, and then remembered the existence of Rent, the musical set in the late 1980s. From there it was just a matter of pinning down the meaning of the quote in my mind and choosing the right photo. I put the photo into GIMP, struggled with colors, decided to save the research for another time bc its been a Trying Week, and then added the quote and background color.

Have you ever heard and song and a particular lyric stood out to you right away? Have you ever heard a song that takes you back in time to years and years ago? Have you ever felt so
There is no denying the power of music. Music has the ability to connect us to one another, to change our mood, and to express our inner feelings that we ourselves have trouble expressing. When I think of music, I think of some songs that I have gotten me through the best of times and the worst of times. There are times where I will hear an old song, and regardless of how many years has passed, the minute I hear the first chord begin to play I am brought back down memory lane to a time where that song was the most relevant soundtrack to my life.
Growing up, I used to keep a journal of some of my favorite song lyrics and songs. I would color coordinate them based on how they made me feel, and include the date that I discovered the song or lyric. As I got older, I would refer back to that journal a lot as a reminder of some good times and some bad ones. But that journal also served as a symbol for the ability of music to move a person.
We all have that one song or that one line/lyric stuck out to us so much so that when we heard it for the first time, it was as if it was written just for us.
The purpose of one of this week’s visual assignments was to use a lyrics or lyrics from a song that stood out to
When I first read this assignment, one song immediately jumped out in my mind: “Praying” by Ke$ha.
For those who don’t know, “Praying” was Ke$ha’s comeback song after she was forced through an emotional sexual assault trial against the director of her former record label.
The song is all about overcoming fear and hopelessness, and going through life’s hardest battles but still having the strength to get up and fight no matter what.
The first time I heard this song was an emotional experience because I was familiar with why Ke$ha wrote the song in the first place. But as I listened to the song, one line was sung that clung to my mind and my heart was:
Ke$ha’s song and these lyrics, in particular, came to me at a time in my life where they expressed exactly how I was feeling and expressed my feelings more perfectly than I ever could. It was a time in my life when something that I loved and
I wanted to make sure that if I was going to make a visual for this lyric, I made something that fit not only what was being said, but visually would express how this line makes me feel. To this day, this song lyric is one of the most tragic lyrics I have ever heard in my life, but it is also one that fills me with strength and hope. Using Canva, I designed this graphic by uploading an image of a sunrise my friend took from a camping trip and typing the lyrics in a text box over the image.
This image I felt was the perfect representation of this song and these lyrics. Sunrises represent new
Music makes us feel things all the time. I really enjoyed this assignment because it gave me the chance to visually express the way a song lyric made me feel. While I have never experienced the time of darkness Ke$ha did, her song and her lyrics speak volumes
Yes, I am a massive fan of Harry Styles and I’m not ashamed to admit it. When I saw that there was an assignment involving lyrics, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. The assignment was to find some background and put one of your favorite lyrics on it. This was from Harry’s first ad, before any of his new stuff was released, and I found it visually appealing with him wearing the dark clothes in a dark room and opening a door to a bright light. After this ad came out, he released his first single called Sign of the Times which he tried to write in the perspective of a dying mother who just gave birth and wants to give her child advice before she passes. The lyrics, “Welcome to the final show, hope you’re wearing your best clothes” really stood out to me. With the photo, I kind of see the dark and light representing death and birth. If you have not heard this song, I highly recommend it. https://youtu.be/qN4ooNx77u0 The fact that there are over 73 million views should be an indicator that it’s worth 5 minutes and 41 seconds of your time.
This is for the My Favorite Lyric assignment that can be found in the ds106 assignment bank.
For my last assignment I chose a 2 star visual assignment called My Favorite Lyric. I immediately thought of my favorite song, Murder in the City by the Avett Brothers.
My favorite lyric in the song is referring to his family, when he sings: “Always remember there was nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share a name.” This song always reminds me of my family, so I chose to edit a picture of me and my brothers.
First, I chose a picture of us from last year that I really like. Then I googled “add text to photo” and found a website called Add Text. I inserted the picture then added the lyrics, changed the font, and positioned the text. It was pretty simple and I like how it turned it out:
Ah, the power of music, or, in this case, poetry. I spun the metaphorical wheel in the Visual Assignment Bank for DS106 and was rewarded with the assignment to take a set of favorite lyrics and arrange them over a related image that helps convey the feel of the music.
After much contemplation, I adjusted the assignment a tad bit, and chose not a song, but a poem, from which to pull my inspiration. For those not familiar with Inversnaid by Gerard Manley Hopkins, I highly recommend you try reading it aloud a couple of times – it’s written to try and reflect the rhythm of the creek it describes and has an interesting mix of “created” words to help convey the author’s sense of place. I love this poem because it always leaves me longing to be outside, and I strongly appreciate the structure that gives it a musical sensibility.
Inversnaid
This darksome burn, horseback brown,
His rollrock highroad roaring down,
In coop and in comb the fleece of his foam
Flutes and low to the lake falls home.A windpuff-bonnet of fawn-froth
Turns and twindles over the broth
Of a pool so pitchblack, fell-frowning,
It rounds and rounds Despair to drowning.Degged with dew, dappled with dew,
Are the groins of the braes that the brook treads through,
Wiry heathpacks, flitches of fern,
And the beadbonny ash that sits over the burn. What would the world be, once bereft
Of wet and wildness? Let them be left,
O let them be left, wildness and wet;
Long live the weeds and the wilderness yet.
The last stanza speaks from the 19th century to the 21st century: human connection to nature and the worry that it is at risk was important then and is important now. I take the last verse as a call to action, as well as a declaration of the resiliency of nature. I chose to play up the triumphant and hopeful feeling that I have when I read that line. My creation emphasizes the idea that nature is beautiful and strong, and here to stay.
There are two main components to this visual creation: the background image and the transformation of words into visual art. I started with a photo I took recently in my backyard. I see the bold splash of nature against the tumbling, weed-like background of green speaking to both the idea of life and also to the idea of tenacity (which the word “weed” brings to mind).
I hope to convey a little bit of that sense of wildness with the offset and variable placement of the words. I particularly focus on “wilderness,” which I built letter-by-letter so I could manually adjust sizing and kerning to highlight and emphasize the importance of the word to the overall vision. There is also a bit of reflection added to “wilderness” to hint at how wilderness reflects our world and our humanity. I also like to think of it as showing that the wild is not something contained within normal lines.
A final, practical addition included adding a bit of layering behind part of the wording to increase readability, which can be difficult on a busy background. I used a copy of the background image, cropped it, increased shading, and then added a softening effect to the border to make it flow with the original image.
I used Microsoft Publisher to create this image. The original photo was taken with a Sony a6000. And, of course, a shout-out to Gerard Manley Hopkins for his excellent poem, as well as the BBC for helping me with the words I had forgotten…
Have you ever heard and song and a particular lyric stood out to you right away? I think all of us have had the feeling at least once. For this assignment use one of those lyrics that stood out to you and make it into a visual. Use some kind of background that represents the lyric and place the lyrics over it in some way. Be creative! But make sure that your visual product evokes the same kind feeling that the lyric of the song does.
Music has always been one of the most important things in my life. However, I am not musically inclined which hurts my soul everyday. My parents don’t listen to country music which I truly discovered in high school and fell in love with. To this day my father still asks when my “country music phase” will be over. I have just found country music to be the most story telling of the genres of music, which I truly appreciate. It has always been so easy for me to connect songs to certain situation or memories, which is why when Springsteen by Eric Church first hit the radio waves I fell in love. It is the ultimate summer anthem that makes you nostalgic every time you hear it, which is ironic considering it talk about how all types of music brings up memories.
I chose my favorite lyric from Springsteen to portray in an image. Considering the song Springsteen is supposed to be set at a concert I figured a concert image would be the best to chose to accompany the lyrics. I downloaded a black and white image of a concert from the internet.
I uploaded the concert photograph to Canva.com
I went to the text menu and selected a text style I wanted the photograph.
I changed the text color to red.
I copied the text of the work Melody to change to Memory.
From the Text Menu I inserted a smaller subheading text.
I copied the subheading text to do the lyric before melody and before memory. I changed the font to Great Vibes.
I upped the font size of the smaller text to make it more proportionate.
I then adjusted the location of everything on the page.
The final thing I did was add the title Springsteen through the text menu to the lower right hand corner of the page.
And because how could I leave it out? Here’s Springsteen!

The characters this assignment involves is Dalina’s Rose King and my own Melody Bay. Both women are artists, one a singer the other a painter, and both are trapped in their hometown. Rose because she does not have the money to leave, Melody Bay because she cannot leave the memories of her childhood.
The song I received the lyrics from is I Just Wanna Run by The Downtown Fiction.
This is the lyrics in plain text.
I’m feelin’ like I keep on talking
I’m repeating myself,
My words lost all meaning
I keep talking
I repeat myself
This assignment was to take a picture and add lyrics that go with it. This picture was sent to me from a buddy who served in Iraq. This picture and the lyrics by Toby Kieth’s american Soldier really strike my character because he was from a military family. He truly believes in being patriotic and will always have a love for those who served.
