You’re a Pinteresting Character Spence

For my first collaborative assignment I am doing the “You’re a Pinteresting Character” assignment worth four points. For this assignment I used my character, Spence, with some inspiration from Janelle’s character, Sebastian Crane. I found that Sebastian and Spence are actually quite similar. I drew from the 1940’s era, in which Sebastian would have been about the same age as Spence, and added a little bit of the Sebastian charm to my Pinterest board for Spence. The board mostly consists of different parings of Scotch and Brandy, Sebastian’s drink of choice, to satisfy Spence’s semi-alcoholic tendencies. I also included some 1940’s Italian pin-up girls. Spence tries desperately to hold on to his late mother in any way he can. These girls remind him of what his mother looked like in her “glory days”, times that she would reminisce to Spence about when he was young. The pin-up girls are also a nod to Sebastian Crane. Also included in Spence’s pinterest board are vintage inspired watches, cufflinks, and a tie guide. Spence likes to dress sharp on a daily basis.

Web Assignment:

Character Resume 3.5?

For this assignment we had to make a resume for a character. I chose this assignment because this week is pretty much all about introducing our characters story, and I thought that giving a resume was something that could really add to my character’s background. It was a really simple thing to do, but I really enjoyed doing it. I did some research for the area of South Boston, where Emma lives, and now I kind of want to live there.

The way I incorporated other student’s characters was in the activities section of the resume. I added that she was the member of the Tune Squad which consists of Geoffrey Cunningham, and Detective Longs.

resume

I wrote the entire resume in Microsoft word. There I hit a snag. I wanted the resume to appear exactly how it does in Word, but I couldn’t figure out how to do so. So what I did was copy the word document into paint and saved it as a picture. Then I could upload it to flicker and embed it into this post. That way it looks just like how I typed it.

A Pinteresting Idea

You’re a Pinteresting Character (4 Stars)

As an avid Pinterester, I was very excited to see this assignment. In order to make this assignment collaborative, I decided to plan a trip and other activities with Kimberly and Kayleigh going off of the Steadfast Sleuths friendship between Sarah Mustard, Sasha Kellogg, and Shelley Layton. Sarah and Shelley are going to travel to San Francisco to visit Sasha. This board is not just for their trip, but also elements of that connect each of their lives together and articles they wish for the others to see.

First we have pins related to traveling, such as a pin about traveling on Amtrak by train and a list of good books to read on the train.

Then we pinned various tourist activities to do in San Francisco, pinning pins such as the Golden Gate Bridge, China Town, a mosaic staircase, seward street slides, and traveling to the redwood forest.

Also, the Steadfast Sleuths would like to keep up their detective work while they are in San Francisco so they looked up mysterious locations in the area to visit such as: a painted black Victorian home, Alcatraz, and the Wincester house.

When they have some down time they have pinned various relaxing activities to do: 30 best chick flicks of all time, a drive-in movie, going to a book store, and shopping.

Also, naturally due to Sarah and Shelley’s love of cats, the Steadfast Sleuths have pinned a cat tea room to visit, a cat cafe that will soon be opening, and a cat beer company to visit in San Francisco.

Beside their trip related pins though, the Steadfast Sleuths also pinned helpful tips for them to know about their lives such as tips for how to take care of their cat, 10 basic safety tips for women (this one is particularly for Sasha Kellogg), and a t-shirt that reads “I just want to drink wine and pet my cat”.

Even though all of these characters took place in the 1950’s I think that this assignment was to collaborate with other students and their characters, as well as add more story to my own character. It was fun thinking outside of the box of different pins to put on their board as well as coming up with our own unique comments for each character.

Ol Mick’s Trip to see Ava Harlowe- 1 1/2 stars

Ava Harlowe and Ol Mick Bretton have been good friends since they were kids. Mick decides to surprise Ava in Los Angeles. His trip starts in Atlanta and Mick hits a few road bumps along the way.

Atlanta to Houston

Mick arrives in Houston, TX after about 11 hours of driving. He gets there and finds out that he forgot to reserve a  hotel room. Mick drives around for about two hours until he finds a cozy little bed and breakfast. He knocks on the door to find out that the owner is a dominatrix and he pays by letting her do whatever she wants to him. Mick decides to not stay in the bed and breakfast and sleeps in his car.

Houston to Albuquerque

The next day Mick gets all the way to Albuquerque when his tire blows out. He has to wait in a pep boys for 3 hours to get a new tire on his car. A huge coincidence happens here when he is given two options to pay. One with standard cash and the other is for the mechanic to dominate him. He pays with money.

Albuquerque to Los Angeles

The next day Mick gets to Los Angele’s just to find out that Ava is visiting family in New York. He is super pissed but decides that there is nothing he can do so he decides to get a hotel. He goes to check in to find the first dominatrix had to move her business to Los Angeles because of the business market. Mick looks in his wallet to pay with standard cash but finds out he spent it all on the new tire. I think you can figure out what happens next. (The safe word was thunderbun)

Stellar Story with Rick Shannon- 3 1/2 stars

For this assignment I had to make a story using the app stellar. The app was very easy to use. I just downloaded it and it gave me a quick tutorial of how to use it. I would recommend to anyone that they should download this app if they want an easy way to make a story.

I was searching through other people in ds106 to find a character to do a story with. I came across Rick Shannon. He is a cop who has had his brother and father killed. My character Ol Mick loves to solve crimes so he took over the case of finding out who killed Shannon’s blood line. Mick being the super detective that he is finds the guy and puts him in jail.

Gornie Invoice – delivering the finger physically?

WebAssignment58

Bill Clark Invoice – pdf full view

Invoice Jerry's Gornie

I created an invoice for webassignment58 based on an event of my character in his freshman year of high school.

I was not aware of this interpretation of gornie until reading the book Eastside: fractured Tales of Milwaukee’s Eastside and finding my Dad’s name in it as this event. My mom was Italian. We all had a gold gornie necklace and told it was an Italian good luck charm. I still have mine on a charm necklace with some other charms and wear it on holidays. My mom wore one most of her life. This gives me a little more insight into why it was special for her and that she wore it with pride for 53 years of marriage before she passed away.

This is 3 stars – but with character development, seemed this is more of a 1.5-2 at this point. Most of the creation is in writing and connecting to a story line.

Sara Sparkle’s Resume

I did this 3 1/2 Stars assignment “using a website like LinkedIn, create a “fake” resume for a fictional person or character of your choice. Add detailed descriptions and make the resume relevant to the character. Resume must include a profile, work history, education, and skills. Locations, job positions, and companies can be made up! Use your creativity!”

I made a resume for my character Sara Sparkle who is a professional dancer at LA. Sara has been going through lots of trouble lately if you have been following her twitter account and the posts I have made earlier. She feels Guilty for leaving her daughter and she thinks it is better if she finds another Job in NYC, so she can spend more time with her daughter plus her carrier plan was falling apart in LA and she does not think it will improve any time soon at least. She is a suspect for John Marlly’s  murder as well as Rose King. Nothing has been proven yet, but everything will come to light soon and we will find out whether she is guilty or not.

First things first, let’s make a plan

Well, Bev likes to make a plan. I don’t want to say that she’s a control freak but….. I’ve gotten to know her a bit recently and, well, she is.

To catch you up, Bev took me on a trip recently. I don’t know how she found me, or where she went after the trip, but we really tied up some loose ends following that strange Bev’s Buddies program

Bev insisted that we create an itinerary while we were on the plane, and she recommended we use Pinterest. As a visual aritist, I enjoyed learning about this medium and working with the different imagery as a visual representation of our trip. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that Bev’s not that bad a person, and with a little planning, a mysterious trip can be pretty fun.

Mariah and I had a lot of fun collaborating on this assignment as well. She really took the lead here, as I knew nothing about Pinterest. However, I helped with looking up ideas about what we could do in Bali and what content to feature on our board. Collaborative assignments are really great for that reason: everyone brings different ideas and skills to the table and you walk away with something you might not have been able to make on your own. I’ve really enjoyed the different assignments we’ve been able to incorporate into this story as well.

Bali Adventure with Damon

Bev here. After the radio show, Damon and I made up and talked things out. We decided to go on a trip in order to work things out. He just wanted to get up and leave right away, but I was like woah woah woah Damon, slow it down. So I was like First things first, we need a pinterest board (yah, sometimes I can be an annoying petty girl- back off before I stick secret service on you).

So we made this board. It’s AWESOMEEE. Screen Shot 2015-03-12 at 10.19.17 PM

It has all the things we are going to do:

– make some salsa
– stand in some foundations
– sit on the ocean without being in the ocean
– eat some actual food that is wonderful
– sit at random bars and meet people.

This assignment was really interesting. For our character it is a lot of fun and I’m sure she would be able to go on the trip. For me, it probably isn’t in my future.

When it comes to completing this Jonathan and I sat down and figured out where we wanted to go. We knew we wanted to develop our characters a little bit more and this was how I figured it would work best. I love Pinterest and he loves planning so it worked out perfectly. I took to Pinterest to start pinning all things bali. I usually don’t use Pinterest that often, so it’s always like a break from my hectic schedule when I get to use it. Additionally, it was really fun to watch Jonathan try and figure out Pinterest and click on random things. He just kept sitting around clicking random things and watching what would happen (I think he might have pinned some weird things to my other boards just to mess with me). Overall, I feel like this project was definitely a successful one if you are looking to expand on your character. I was three stars!

Jerry of Eastside for Sale on eBay

As the #noir106 cohort works on character development as collaborations and listens to their audio #ds106radio episodes over the next two weeks, I am opting for some creations based on the open course week 8 for this week. I am of course changing it up and adding my own little slice of the UMW Noir Cohorts to my mix.

I started using my dad as my character. He really doesn’t interact with any of the Noir characters, but the time period I am focusing on now starts during that era. As others create Twitter personas for their characters and will develop stories and interactions I realized these assignments are the updated version of ds106 and Storytelling within the Web.

I began with this first assignment – WebAssignment713. Story telling within the web. I chose an eBay page for this first attempt. I searched for 1955 and came up with some great auction items. I chose to replace the first 9 items with some of my work and other photos of Jerry across his life – just some samples. You can see the screen shot below and go to a working html page by clicking this link: Jerry Eastside on eBay

Story in Web

The eBay story should help in identifying different parts of Jerry’s life and things that happened to him. Marriage, activities, love, etc.

I used X-Ray Goggles to reconstruct the eBay page. I even changed some of the text to #ds106. :-) At first I thought I had to change all the parts to go to a page that would just explain that this was all a story and not go to the original products. When I was finished, it produces a page, but the links do not go anywhere – so that step can be eliminated. That makes this more of a one layer kind of presentation which is a lot easier to think out than the multiple branches and side trips that could be created and make this a far deeper and complex assignment.

I can see using this for different characters in search pages, IMD, and maybe even Facebook or LinkedIn so that you can tell the story but not have to create an account and set up etc. to support. It reminds me of prior to Photoshop and other remixes having a magazine cover with your own photo inserted.

Building a portfolio for a character could easily be accomplished using this method to tell a story.Threading a full trail “in” the web for a character will add dimensions and interaction for readers. This first attempt has sprouted many tangents and ideas of how to use the web as the story for telling. I want to also explore further into how to work with the CSS of a page to alter the content to my choosing.
