For this assignment the task was to create a story using Google Maps about a trip that you have taken. This would be done using the directions tool on Google Maps by entering the start location and then 1 or more destination locations.

My inspiration for this was from one of the other examples where someone had previously completed this assignment. Their blog post as seen here detailed the journeys they completed over a short period of time while travelling over their summer holiday and was very interesting to read with the added maps and photos to illustrate the adventure. This inspired me to want to do this assignment about my summer holiday in 2016 since it was probably the most travelling around I’ve done while in another country. I also wanted to be sure to use quite a few maps and photos to illustrate the journey to make the story engaging like in the example.

My journey begins on the 15th of September 2016 with a short drive to Luton Airport to begin my summer holiday with my family. From here it was just a short wait before boarding the 2 hour flight to Venice Marco Polo Airport. I spent most of the 2 hours looking out of the window (I don’t like flying if I can’t see the beautiful views outside).

On arrival after stepping out into the surprisingly moderate weather (I was expecting it to be hotter!) we then had to set about getting from the airport which is just on the mainland (right on the edge with water each side of the runway) to the city of Venice. This is slightly more difficult and unusual than it sounds as there are only 2 ways to get to the city (or 3 if you count swimming but I wouldn’t advise that). These are over the road/rail bridge which stops right on the edge of the city or via a boat.

We got the bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma which is the bus station in a square on the edge of the city. In this square at the end of the road/rail bridge the roads simply stop with this being as far as wheeled vehicles can physically go into Venice.

The journey from Piazzale Roma to the Flat we were staying at near Fondamente Nove was quite eye opening catching the bus (which was a boat) around part of the city to the bus stop there. As obvious that it is that everything which we have in normal “on land life”  is a boat in Venice it is quite crazy actually seeing it in person! E.g. you have Police boats, Ambulance boats, Fire boats, Bus boats, Taxi boats, even rubbish removal boats and the list goes on! (Even the bus stops are just floating pontoons parked off the edge of the land).

That evening after unpacking in the flat we went for a walk to St Marks Square which is the iconic big square in the centre of the main Venice Islands. Even a simple task such as this of going on a walk is more complicated in Venice because not every path you go down leads you to somewhere with often them just being dead ends with the water “road” at the end. Therefore it was necessary to use a map to ensure we went down the right paths with the necessary bridges. You often have to take a loop to get to where you want as there are few straight paths to get to places. That evening we also discovered that we’d come to Venice just before the city flooding starts in the winter months where the water just rises up through the drains in the ground covering most of the paths in the city used to get around. Thankfully since we were there in the weeks just before the water only rose a few inches in certain areas around St Marks Square.

Over the next few days we explored various places around the main Islands including  the Rialto Bridge, St Marks Square again, accidentally finding the Venetian Arsenal and the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore. One day we also took a bus trip to the Island of Murano which is a bit further out from the main group of islands and is where all of the Venetian glass factories are. A particular highlight for me was going up St Mark’s Campanile with the stunning views you can get of the whole of Venice from the top. You can literally see the water around most of the main Venice Islands where they just stop!

The next part of the holiday involved moving from Venice to Bologna where we would stay for another couple of days. First we had to walk to the station across Venice at the end of the road/rail bridge and then catch a train from there to Bologna which is a bit further south. The journey was quite interesting looking at all the towns and countryside out of the window. After arriving in Bologna we walked from the station to the hotel and went out that evening to explore a bit.

The next day we went to the Lamborghini Factory and Museum which involved getting a taxi to there in order to be on time and catching a bus back quite a few hours later. The day was amazing as I finally got to visit Lamborghini which I’ve always wanted to do (and was actually how the whole holiday came about when I half jokingly said we should go there). I must have taken nearly if not more than 1000 photos on the day, saw the latest cars being produced and saw many rare limited edition cars that I never thought I’d see.

The following couple of days we explored various places around the centre of Bologna including Basilica di San Petronio, the window in a wall overlooking the old canals that run under the city and climbed up one of the iconic olden towers (Asinelli Tower). This tower climbing was a very scary experience seeing as the tower leans quite a lot and the staircases are wooden with low hand rails, narrow , have uneven steps and also lean.

After the few days in Bologna it was time to begin the journey home which involved retracing our steps by walking back to the train station and then catching the train back to Venice.

Once back in Venice we decided to get a boat to the airport which turned out to be quite interesting arriving by water having sailed down the side of the runway.  It was then waiting for our flight and arriving back at Luton Airport in the early evening. A short drive home then completed the return journey having traveled on Foot, Train, Bus, Boat, Plane and Car all in a single day!! Probably the most interesting and fun holiday I’ve been on!

Take a Trip Down Web Lane

This blog is my submission to an assignment called Way Back Time Machine found in the web assignments section of the ds106 website.

The assignment itself struck out to because of the name of the title ‘Way Back Time Machine’. I found this assignment unique because most of the assignments require us to create a piece of digital media, whereas this is more of a research assignment and the piece of media we create is the story and screenshots we provide along the way in our blog.  The aim of this assignment is to use the WayBack website tool provided in the assignment brief. We had to look through screenshots of any website you enter in the search bar. The WayBack website is basically a archive of screenshots of any website it has in its records. So for example if I entered youtube.com into the search bar here is what appears:

youtubewb

As you can see by entering youtube.com  in the search bar you can then chose a year, I chose 2005. After choosing a year you can see in the calendar that which ever date is circled blue there is a link to a screenshot of what that specific link of website looked that day of the year.

Choosing a website was quite a difficult choice because I wanted to find a website that captures time well. I initially thought of looking into Wikipedia as it is a very popular, well used website. As Wikipedia is always being constantly updated and having new information added I believed it would have changed quite dramatically through the years, however this is not the case Wikipedia has kept the same plain style throughout the years making it hard to guess what year the screenshots had been taken if you had not seen the date. I then decided to look through YouTube’s archive of screenshots however after looking through the different screenshots you can’t directly tell what year it is by looking at them as all you can see are thumbnails of videos and the titles, it’s not detailed enough for me. After a few more ideas a found that Amazon was the perfect website to look at all the archived screenshots.

As the brief required us to take screenshots of our chosen website through the years Amazon was great because you can really see the comparison and contrast between the older and new archived shots. The comparison isn’t just great because of how well and advanced the website has become but mainly because of how Amazon sells products you are able to see what was in demand and how those products have also dramatically changed.

One of the best comparisons within the time change of Amazon website is the change of mobile phones here you can really tell which the earlier screenshot is.

2ndphone2006

2006
phone2017

2017

It’s very clear the left-hand shot is the older of the both, the easiest way to tell is how outdated the phones on the left are; flip phones, slide-up’s and the once popular Blackberry style phone have all been ditched for smart phones, specifically touch screen. The improvement on the site itself is also clear, you can see the website has used screen space better by not having large blank gaps between products and mainly way more information before clicking on the category of phone you want.
Whilst still on the topic of the products on Amazon probably the best example which shows the biggest change in the products and the website is the ‘video’ tab section.

video

1999

The video section on Amazon from 1999 is actually mainly selling VHS tapes of current films during that time period like The Matrix and The Mummy. I find this very interesting because in the left hand column there is a link to DVD’s. So at this point in time DVD’s were a small feature in the video section and VHS tapes were still the dominant top seller.

video2017

2017

Now you can see in 2017 the video section is predominantly based on Amazon Prime, which is their TV/film streaming feature. What’s also interesting about this apart from the clear change in the design of the website and the new shows and films is the change in the way we watch them. Amazon along with a lot of other companies like Netflix offer shows and films to be streamed on their websites which requires a subscription and most importantly internet connection. The progression has happened so fast that looking at both of these screen shots you would never had guessed that DVD’s were as big as they were. The screenshot in 1999 shows DVD’s up and coming whereas the 2017 screenshot has no surface link to DVD’s meaning there time has been and gone.

The inspiration in doing this assignment was to showcase a website like amazon that has changed with time and I wanted to show the clear change in how the website has changed and how the content has also changed based upon the buyers want. Amazon is a perfect example because it is not only changing with time it is actually adapting with time and that’s why the difference in screenshots is so crazy. I think the video tab is clear evidence of this, you would not have been able to tell DVD’s were a house hold item or even Blu-Rays. Amazon have adapted to the needs of what people want that is why the current video section is mainly selling instantly downloadable video content and not hardware like DVD’s and VHS tapes.

Ever Wondered How People Create Memes so Quickly?

I always wondered how people created memes and if it was easy or not. I never really took the time to research it. Well it turns out it is a piece of cake to create a meme. My inspiration for this tutorial is to help others to create memes and practice creating memes for our class theme.

In this tutorial I am going to talk about an app for the mac called iMeme which allows you to create memes quickly!

Once you download the iMeme application and open it, a screen will appear that looks like the image above.

On the left they have built-in memes you can select from.

For example:

:

Near the bottom they have a header and a footer to input the text you want on the image.

Also there are a plus and a minus button to shrink or enlarge the text next to the header and footer text boxes.

Some other features they have include:

  • Over 100 built-in templates.
  • Enter your own header and footer text.
  • Adjustable text size and alignment.
  • Use your own images.
  • Save as PNG or copy to the clipboard.
  • Print directly from the app.
  • Automatically upload to imgur.
  • Automatically post to reddit.
  • Works on OS X 10.5 and up.
  • Works on Windows XP and up.

I encourage everyone to install this simple to use meme builder. Here is the link to download it.

Alexander’s March, or, How to Break a FitBit

For my second assignment, I decided to do the Google History Maps Web Assignment. Here I’ve created a rough map of the path of Alexander the Great using Google Maps’ MyMaps tool. The MyMaps tool doesn’t give an HTML code or a file to embed, so I’ve included the following link and a screenshot:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1WhFuQvcJIa5lWYwQQDtGPQKk5YE&usp=sharing

My first thought when reading the assignment description (to recreate the travels of a literary or historical character using this tool) was to do Alexander the Great. Very few historical figures before the modern era had travelled as far as Alexander. In fact, he marched a total of about 22,000 miles! Most people today have trouble getting in 3 or 4 miles a day. Imagine marching with an entire army on foot or horseback without a phone, computer, A/C or heat, or even basic medicine! The map I’ve created here actually only includes a total of about 9,000 miles, so needless to say I’m very far off. Like I said, I didn’t exactly want to turn this assignment into a history essay, so I used the timelines available from the Encyclopedia of Ancient History and SoftSchools.com to sketch out his travels. The information available on each site is actually pretty sparse, which was probably the biggest difficulty I had with this assignment.

As a history major and someone who’s a huge nerd for ancient history, I found this really fun. It took me about 45 minutes to complete, but after I got the hang of it, I was able to add place after place pretty easily. A lot of the names of ancient battlefields or cities were hard to find because those places have changed hands over time and have been renamed. I also didn’t want to crack open a textbook or biography, so I guessed the general straightest route from place to place (except southwest Iran, where Alexander also stopped – I just forgot to add the city). Looking up the names of cities in online encyclopedias solved that issue quickly, so it was really more of a nuisance than a real problem. Overall, I really loved this assignment. I did something sort of similar to it in History Colloquium, where my class mapped major battles of the French and Indian War with Dr. Sellers. MyMaps actually offers layers of depth beyond what I did here. Although ideally I would have included descriptions with links and pictures for all points on the map, there were so many and each with its own huge significance that I excluded a couple for the sake of time. But, the fact that I got to pick my own favorite person for this assignment was a big bonus, and I hope more people choose it and have fun with it in the future.

Hannah’s Dream Europe Vacation

I decided to do this because I love Pinterest. My dream vacation includes going to Europe, and specifically France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. I have always wanted to go on this trip and I figured this was a good place to start!

Where in the world is Annabella Smith?

I chose this assignment because I love using Pinterest, and I want to travel to other countries and experience other places outside the country where I have lived my whole life. I even already had a board on Pinterest dedicated to different places where I want to travel. The UK has been at the top of my list of countries to go because of the beautiful landscape and history. I am also a photographer, and I want to take pictures like the ones that appear on Pinterest (and better ones). In fact, I want to go to graduate school in England to earn my master’s degree in photography. Coincidentally, the movie where I got my secret agent name The 39 Steps is set in the UK.

If I do end up travelling to the UK, I will probably need to spend 2-3 weeks there at minimum. There are more than enough picturesque views, natural sites (forests, cliffs, moors, mountains, rivers, even beaches), medieval-style villages, bed-and-breakfasts, castles, cathedrals, monuments, and Harry Potter filming locations to make for an eventful vacation. In the UK, you can see everything from Stonehenge to the Tower of London to the Isle of Skye. Check out my board to see just some of the places I hope to fit into my dream vacation:

http://pin.it/Fvf_kUB

This trip is definitely possible for me, because it is one of my top goals in life, and travel to the UK for US citizens is affordable and easy, especially because the countries share friendly relations and we speak their language. The only things preventing me from going soon would be time, getting time off work, getting a passport, and money for a plane ticket, accommodations, and a rental car. The UK only requires a valid passport and does not require shots or a visa for anyone staying less than 90 days. Doing this assignment wasn’t too much of a challenge since I was already familiar with Pinterest, but I found some really interesting places I had not heard of before, and it gave me a better idea of the cost and time that would have to go into my vacation. While I have wanted to visit some of the more popular places like Glen Coe or Dean Village for a long time, I found out about some more obscure places like library bars and abandoned abbey ruins. Off I go!

Guessing Game

I had always wondered where those infamous buzzfeed quizzes would always come from. It always seems like there is a new one popping up that could tell anything from what’s your shoe size all the way to where you grew up. So I decided to make one.

Quiz found here

The Quiz

The quiz I made is titled “Can We Guess Which Type of Car You Drive?”.  It is actually pretty hard to find a topic for a the quiz. Even harder is trying to simplify the types of car people can drive.  The car market is so saturated there are quite a lot of choices to choose from. There are small hatchbacks, basic sedans, sports sedans, luxury sedans, coupes, convertibles and the list keeps going. For trucks its the same way as there are mini trucks, diesel trucks, full-size trucks, half tons, quarter tons, 4x4s, 4x2s, SUVs and on and on.  There needs to be some simple way to bring this list down.  I final outcomes for the quiz I have chosen are basic econobox, lifted brodozer, public transportation, and luxury sedan.  I feel that those cover a large percentage of the population and even those that do not own cars.

Process

The process was quite simple, mostly filling out text boxes and adding images. Finding images that were royalty free however were a pain. There are several basic layouts to choose from but what best fit my needs was the “Personality Quiz” layout.  This layout is simple and easy to follow.  The hardest part is trying to figure out questions and their correlating “personality”.  There is no true science to this so everything is made up.

The Idea

IRL I’m really into cars and this is just a way for me to express that interest. I don’t really have an interest in small econoboxes like Honda Civics or Ford Fiestas, but it helps me stay more engaged in the activity and makes it more interesting.
