Create Your Own Room [or Palace…]

In my last post I mentioned that I am planning to construct a palace that will serve my purposes as a spy in the United States. My top secret residence will be a place to plan my operations and also give me a few comforts of home.

In these things it is always important to consider the different amenities that one could or could not include. It is also critical to maintain a humble balance between practicality and luxury. My secret residence must be a fortress, secure from all possible danger as well as comfortable and provide me with the lifestyle that I have grown accustomed to.

As I was planning my [top secret] palace I decided to create a Pinterest board to help with the planning process. Here are the highlights of my  masterpiece, I’ll explain as I go along.

First, there must be entertainment for my off duty days. A bumbl bee roller coaster is my stress reliever of choice because the bee is the symbol of my namesake, Napoléon himself, and I like to think that it is the creature that best represents my secret agent style:

Part of the grounds must also reflect my royal namesake:

My orchestra must have a place to rehearse my theme song!

And for when my stuffing gets low I have my very own re-fluffing center. If ever I need backup more agents can be made:

And of course, my control room where I plot all of my missions:

Dream Room? It’s just a dream for now…

Original assignment

Dream Room? It’s just a dream for now…

This was my first time using Pinterest and signing up for it was a breeze. I created 5 boards, which successfully divided each idea into specific categories. Starting with “Room,” I wanted my bedroom to embody a comfortable atmosphere in which I can just relax and rest. For “Bed,” since I like the color white, I wanted to decorate my bed with mostly white and maybe complement it with a touch of pastel or monotone color such as pink and/or gray. Some sheets looked very cool so I also decided to pin these ideas. For “Chilling area,” I thought that they were awesome ideas for creating another space within the bedroom itself to semi-rest, hence the term, chill. I think the theme here is to have many cushions as possible, making the space feel extra cozy. For “Wall,” I liked these ideas too because they were creatively utilizing the space to its full potential. Not only can these ideas apply toward decorating, but it can also apply toward organization. Finally, “decorations” was something I thought was feasible in a practical manner. Since decorations do enhance the room’s look, I thought that it would be something worth to try without sacrificing too much.

Overall, I thought that Pinterest was a useful tool to organize my thoughts as well as discover new ideas that are both pretty and innovative. My story here is, my dream room would equate to coming home where everything is just relaxing and peaceful, away from the busy life spent during the day.

A Room of One’s Own

My very first attempt at a DS 106 assignment! I’m educating myself. Go easy, pleasey?

” I wish, I wish I had this.. “

My second assignment I picked was from the web assignments category  titled “Create Your Own Room”. ” Create Your Own Room ” assignment was to create a blog post about my dream room by using the pictures of furniture , colors, rooms, etc. from the site Pinterest. This assignment is my absolute fave and who wouldn’t agree. You get to design your own dream Room, everybody has one and do not say you don’t.

My dream home is anything that came out of a fairy tale and every time I go into my house, I am in disbelief that this is my own home and not a model home from a magazine. However I want my home to be cozy for family and guest to be able to relax from any hardships. I had no problems picking out the pictures from Pinterest so here are my results for my ideal dream home:

I just had to put this. When I was very little I always said I wanted to live in a castle and even though I grown up, some part of me didn’t and that little kid still wants a “castle”.

I love reading books so I also need space to just be able to put my books instead of stacking them on top of each other like I do now.

This right here is on my top dream list. I have to have a big closet because I love clothes, shoes etc. so I need a bigger area to put my all my stuff.

This shows a swing I would want in my backyard for when in the summertime, My friends and I can just go outside at night and look the endless stars.

Of course I had to have a kitchen or I can not survive. I absolutely love food. I found myself in the kitchen cooking up my next meal of the day.

When there is a kitchen, there is a pantry. You cannot have one without the other. Food needs to be store and I mean a lot of food..

A nice open bedroom is all I need to sleep because a girl needs her beauty sleep. and I love to sleep. Who doesn’t?

I need a spacious living room to fit all my family and I love to have space where everybody is together but still room where everybody has their own space.

Lastly, you need a place other than the bedroom to relax and the Theater room will do just that by allowing me to watch movies and hang out with family and friends.

As an active Pinterest fan, I found that I spend my time scrolling the pictures and dreaming of my future home. This assignment was easy for me since I basically dream about what I can make that can come to life in the distant future. It was hard to pick out the pictures since all of them I want in my house. I found it funny because all my life I dream of the house I wanted, telling my family I going to have this when I grew up or that. However when I tried today to think of the possibilities, I came up blank and could not think of anything but once I narrowed it down to the necessities I want to see in my dream home it became clearer. Although the assignment was ranked 4 stars , I would rank it myself 2 since it took some times getting the pictures but other than that It was a fun assignment to do.

Sincerely,

“A girl can dream ”

What Movie Spy Are you?

For my last assignments, I decided to do a BuzzFeed Personality Quiz on What Movie Spy Are you to try and connect it to our class theme.

I have never made a BuzzFeed quiz before so this was a challenge for me trying out a new software. Going into it, I thought it wasn’t going to be hard since I assumed Buzzfeed would make it easy for users to create their own content.

I was wrong.

I didn’t have trouble actually making the quiz, but I had a lot of trouble publishing it and logging into BuzzFeed.  I think Buzzfeed hates me.

The first time I tried publishing the quiz, it deleted all my work.

The second time, It kept loading, and nothing happened, and then deleted my work. The third time it happened, I emailed BuzzFeed but got no reply.

I decided to leave it and just try again another day, and finally 3 days later, here we are. With an actually published quiz.

In the end, I give this assignment 4 stars in difficulty because Buzzfeed hates me so much.

I also hate Buzzfeed.

Never again.

Mapping James Bond

For my first ever assignment bank assignment I decided to tackle the Harness Relationships: Make a Map with Kumu. I had never used Kumu before but I had seen people use it before and was curious to check it out. Seeing it in the assignment bank I was excited to try it out.  I remembered people saying Kumu could be difficult to use so I started by going through all the tutorials for how to create a map. Kumu offers three types of general maps, the assignment bank specified a connections map so I selected that type of map. I decided to have my maps of connections tie into the secret agent theme of the semester. For my map I created a character map of the characters in a James Bond as a way to explore the story of a film.

Poster for James Bond film Dr. No

I chose to look at the James Bond film Dr. No, now I have actually never seen this Bond film before and I purposefully chose one that I had not seen. I decided to do this because I wanted to see how much character descriptions alone could help you explore the story itself. Now I primarily used Wikipedia to inform me on the characters in the film. I know people often have reservations about using Wikipedia as reference however I have found that particularly dedicated fans keep a close eye on monitoring correct information on these pages. I also went into the pages edit history and checked through the history to see that it is well maintained. Another reason was that many people when they want a basic idea of a story tend to google the film and read the summary, so I was exploring how some one casually looking up the film could understand the story through it’s characters. (Although for my own part in trying to discern story from just character I only read character synopsis and did not read the plot. Only after I had finished my map did I go back and read the plot to see how much of the story I was able to discern. )

So as I started my Kumu map I decided to keep the descriptions for each character brief as well as the connections making it more essential to look at both the characters and the connections. So in Kumu each character is represented as an “element” or a little circle and the lines that go from element to element are “connections.”  For instance here is my example element for the character James Bond. (The lines extending out of frame are connections to other characters.)

For each character I included a brief introduction about who they were, I also included the actor who portrayed them. In the case of frequently repeating  characters in the franchise I included who else played the character in other films but specified the actor for this particular film.

I also went ahead and had to play around to figure out how to upload images and decided I wanted to keep the over all map minimalist in color after playing around with color in the Kumu edit section. From there is was all about imputing each character as an element. Once I had a bunch of floating elements going I had to go back and trace how each character was connected. After I created all the connections I went back and double checked to make sure everything was correct.

I was surprised how much about the plot I really understood just through the character summaries. I was able to figure out the events took place in Kingston Jamica, who worked for the villian Dr. No, and who made it out alive. Admittedly though when I read just the summaries of the characters as a group there were some missing gaps in relationships that I only got when I dug deeper in the process of finding images for the characters. For instance the short description for the character Honey Ryder focuses on her occupation but does not inherently link her to other characters. However when you click into the Honey Ryder page it becomes clear she has a romantic relationship with James Bond. Overall though I was able to discern a good deal about the film just through analyzing the characters relationships with one another.

Finally here is my final product! Kumu is a interesting tool to play around with but even more fun when it’s completed because the bigger picture is present. Unfortunately the way Kumu embeds in a site is rather small and changing the dimensions distorted the map so I suggest looking at it through Kumu’s site to get the full effect. (Warning though there site can be a bit slow to load sometimes.)

A Nostalgia Trip – Web Archives

I thought this task was a really interesting experiment. Moore’s law says that technology advances every eighteen months. You buy or use a piece of technology and after a year and a half something new has come along and it’s already outdated.

I wondered whether this was true for websites as well.

So using The Way Back Machine I went back to the old home pages of the Apple Website. to test both the technology and the web site theory.

Starting with 2003 – you can see the adverts at the bottom of the page for their new iPod and iMac look incredibly outdated and almost retro, but this was only just over ten years ago is it retro already?

Carrying on to 2009 you can see the latest product is the newest iPod Shuffle which they advertised as saying ‘spoke to you’. It’s important to note that this was a product that they launched that didn’t do as well as the iPhone. Come to think of it, who even has an iPod anymore anyway? Has apple outdated, one of their own products only to replace it with a new one?

However, no one remembers a company’s mistakes it only remembers its successes.

And finally the last page I went to was 2010 and that showed the launch of the first iPad. A true game changer when it was first launched and started off the tablet craze that’s still going today.

Overall I think this is a cool thing to do especially if a person wants to see how a website hs changed over the years. It is nice to see a timeline of a company or website growing with its users. Alternatively, look at a website from when you first encountered it on the web see how it has changed, has it changed for the better? Has it changed for the worse?

Everything is fine

So in the essence of telling a story through a web page, I decided to go to that place where you will find the most news stories and that was, of course, the BBC News homepage.

Here, there are excerpts from other news stories all collected in one place. I thought this was ideal for remixing.

I used the web browser extension “X-Ray Goggles” It’s free and I highly recommend it if you want to try this out yourself.

Reading the news stories I found them all to be very worrying and alarming. The world seems to be in a sorry state and the news isn’t helping. So I fixed it. Original news page looked like this

And I changed it to be a little bit jollier.

I could only seem to change the headlines and not the text paragraphs underneath them. So they still remain. As you can see I tried to keep as true to the pictures where possible. I showed this to a couple of my friends and they found it amusing.

I know doing this is very funny especially in light of the serious news that no one can get away from these days but it’s important to pay attention to the news and to go and find the good news stories that are happening because there are some, you just have to look.
