Visual Assignments

Combophoto

Use photo editing software of your choice to splice pairs of pictures into single images.  Play with scale in delightful ways.  See artist Stephen McMennamy’s great collection.

Create a silly Movie Poster

Take an exisiting movie poster and make it look silly. My final project involved an Ewok who wanted to be in a movie with Arnold Schwarzengger. This is his idea of a poster.

The Civil War Photo

Take your best Civil War era photo. Take a picture of yourself in a very stale pose (like you have never had a picture taken in your life) and then edit it afterwards in some sort of grunge black and white style to make it look old. If you want to be very clever, try and make the enviroment around you fit the Civil War era theme of the photo.

We’re the Real Life Brady Bunch!

Most everyone has seen the infamous picture of The Brady Bunch where everyone in the family is showcased in their own personal box. Now it’s your turn!! Whether your actual family or your close group of friends, make a collage mimicking the picture shown below. Be creative with the title. Make the title alliteration either with your last name or somesort of name you wish to call your group. In your post, explain why you chose the people you did in your collage.

Recreate a Famous Movie Scene

Pose as a part of your favorite movie scene, or just a famous movie scene in general. From the Titanic to Jurassic World, there are plenty of memorable images that would be fun to recreate. The more creative (or ridiculous), the better! Post the original beside your own once you’re done. Don’t forget to mention where the original comes from and why you chose to use it!

You in Collage Form

This comes with simple instructions. Make a collage with images and words that describe you or mean something to you. This can either be done with actual materials like paper and magazine clips or by taking images, memes, and fonts from the Internet. Be careful to focus on the design of the collage, not just putting things together in a big glob. Have fun and be creative!

That’s Not What I Expected

Take a close up picture of something as see if people can guess what it is. Try doing the skin or outside of something that would make it hard for someone to guess!

256 Points

Today, we have the luxury of fast computers with lots of memory and power. However, that wasn’t always the case, and graphics designers had to make due with very limited capabilities. For this assignment, you are to draw a person, vehicle, or otherwise intricate object. The catch is, your image can only be 16 pixels by 16 pixels! Work to express as much detail as possible in the space allotted. If the size is not constraining, you are not setting your standards high enough! Feel free to enlarge the picture before putting it online, but remember that your resolution must still be that of a 16×16 pixel image.

The Forrest Gump Project

Good ole’ Forrest Gump. He always manages to find himself at the center of history, and using photo editing software, so can you. Find a historic photograph and place yourself into the scene, just like Forrest Gump.

Camp Poster

Make a poster an advertisment of some sort for a camp or summer activity that you enjoyed as a child. If you didn’t go to any camps as a kid, make a poster for a camp you wish you had attended.
