Visual Assignment #3

For my third assignment, I did the Newspaper Blackout Poetry, worth 3 stars.

Here’s the image:

Newspaper Blackout Poetry

The poem reads:

“sacred representations”

murders

attempted murder

confused, angry and fearful

feel sacred figures

ubiquity of sacred images

t-shirts and bumper stickers

deadly

the path was settled

the creation to be a violation

scratched out

marched on

cross-examined

feared, warned, compelled

infallibility

waged war

burned and dismembered

defecated

avoided depicting

Washington

holy and sacred

George Washington

sacred duty

become commonplace

children

resistance

Hollywood

nothing short of blasphemy

constant source of conflict

That’s a damned lie!

violence painted

uproars

crucifix, submerged

a crusade

vaginas surrounding her

elephant dung was smeared

displayed

caused mass violence

intense conflict

a culture supersaturated

largely without violence

I think the hardest part for me was finding the right article. This one came out of the Thursday issue of the New York Times. It was about religion, which I knew would have great phrases. It was also hard to black out certain phrases and leave others, since I was using a sharpie. I just picked out phrases or words that stood out to me and then had a few people read through it to make sure it made somewhat sense (although the power of poetry is that it doesn’t always make sense.) I went with my first instincts and actually really liked the finished product. I will probably do this exercise again.

PS: my poem, because of the length of the article I chose, ended up pretty long. I don’t mind, but when choosing an article it may help to focus on shorter articles or blurbs.

Visual Assignment #2

For my second visual assignment, I decided to do the Splash the Color, worth 2 stars.
Here are my two color splashes (I had so much fun I had to do two).

Color Splash 1

This is passionflower, which looks really awesome in person.

Color Splash 2

Even though I took this photo a while ago, I love the way the red coat stands out. It’s also interesting because of the wing my sister is holding.

To color splash, I first downloaded the 30 day free trial of photoshop (which I will probably purchase the full version because I like photoshop). Then, I used this tutorial. I put in my first layer, the actual photo. Then I duplicated it and named the duplicate top layer. I then went to image-adjustments-black and white to make the top layer black and white. I used the eraser tool to remove the black and white layer, revealing the color beneath it. I had some trouble but with a couple quick undos, I was able to just focus and make the color I wanted to stand out. After that, I just saved the image and uploaded it to flickr.

Jumping in them moment

I choose to do the assignment Caught in Mid Action from the visual assignment bank.  This assignment is worth 2 stars and I thought it was so much fun!

Levitation

The assigment was to take a picture of something in mid action and make it appear different than it normally would.  I took a picture of my boyfriend jumping mid-air and after a couple of shots, we looked back at the pictures and saw that he actually looked like he was levitating!  Do you agree?

This assignment actually started as pure fun.  I knew that I had to capture something in mid action so we started making games about who could jump the highest and even started making kicks while jumping on the deck.  Like all of the other assignments for this class, this didn’t feel like an assignment.  It started out with two people being goofy, and having a camera around (or in my case, my handy-dandy iPhone.

As a result of this assignment I ended up with tons of pictures on my phone with mid jumps (some falls, ouch!), and tons of laughter.

To do this assignment you need:
- a person: preferably a goofy friend/family member/stranger-danger
-a camera
-open space.

Steps:
first: Convince your goofy friend to do silly jumps, or runs, or anything that involves in motion with you.
second: Go outside to the open space  and take you’re camera with you ( a camera phone will do the job as well)
third: Be goofy and have fun!
p.s. – Don’t forget to upload to flickr so you’re able to embed your images to your blog! :)

The most important things about ds106 to me is forgetting that things are actually assignments and think about it as having opportunities to go outside, have fun, exploring, being silly AND still knowing that I’m getting my work done.

Walmart, according to Paris

Part of our assignment for this week was to do multiple assignments from the visual assignment bank.  I choose to do King of the Meltdowns.  This assignment was worth 2 stars, and we had to find a picture of a celebrity and a quote that matches that picture.  I chose to use a picture of Paris Hiltonlooking confused, with the quote ” What’s Wal-Mart, do they sell like wall stuff?”

I thought that using a confused picture, with Paris asking what Wal-Mart was, was a perfect match!

Walmart according to Paris

I had a little bit of a struggle when I first made this assignment.  At first I tried to used to QuickMeme, it was very easy to upload the picture that I saw, and to add caption to it.  The only problem was that I was unable to actually embed the image to my blog; I would have had to put the link of the website with my meme on my blog, and people would have had to click it in order to see it.  No one wants to do that, so I figured out another way to do it.

Steps on how to do this assignment on PowerPoint.

1) Think about a celebrity that you want to use.
2) Find a funny quote that the celebrity has said, or someone else has said about them.  You can do this by going to Google and typing in the search engine.
3) After finding a funny quote – remember it, or write it down somewhere and go back to google and look for a funny picture of the celebrity you would like to use and save it to your computer.
4) Open up PowerPoint (if you don’t have PowerPoint you can get it here)
5) On PowerPoint go to Insert then click on Photo then choose “Picture from file” and look for the picture you want to use.
6) Feel free to fix the size of the picture or crop it as you please.
7) Under the picture use a text box to type in the quote.  Make sure that you align the quote under or above the picture.  You are also able to use put the words on top of the picture if you would like.
8) After you have everything the way you want, click on “File” then “Save as Pictures” – this will allow for flickr to recognize the image and upload it.
9) Upload it to flickr and crop the whole slide to just have the parts that you want
10) Save the changes and voila! You’re picture is amazingly beautiful.

:)  I hope this tutorial was helpful.  This assignment was fun to do specially spending my time looking for funny quotes from celebrities and looking for pictures to match it.  I liked that I was able to be resourceful and use PowerPoint in order to be able to embed the picture into my blog.  I love the way QuickMeme did my picture with my quote, but the inability to save the picture to my desktop and uploaded to Flickr made it impossible to embed.

“Every ailment from psoriasis to poison ivy can be cured with Windex”

(I hope you get the reference above. If not, google it, and then watch the movie if you haven’t seen it. It’s got some funny one-liners.)

Common Object

I chose Windex for this assignment because I thought it would look cool to manipulate the color of it. I was right. It looks like some kind of neon, toxic waste. Like if you were to fall into a puddle of this shit, you’d either die or come out a super hero–hopefully the latter. I manipulated (or inverted) the colors by using the free app, Photoshop Express, on my iPhone. Super easy, and fun to use. Along with manipulating the colors, I changed the tint & temperature of the picture a bit (warming it up, and tinting it with a bit of red to bring out the beautiful blue of the windex). The picture above is the result.

Oh So Edgy

I thought for sure for this assignment I was going to have to crop together a bunch of random letters to create my name, but I forget sometimes how popular my name has become over recent years (especially with movie stars like Emma Stone, and Emma Watson having the same first name as me). So, randomly stumbled upon my name yesterday (Saturday, the 29th). It was in a Glamour magazine that had Emma Watson on the cover. This obviously isn’t the cover, so, lo-and-behold, this also captures me in my boredom and the reason for why I flipped through a magazine to begin with (I try to avoid these things all together; they are full of so much annoying, and unrealistic shit). I got really excited when I saw my name (without her last name immediately proceeding it) and snapped the photo. Naturally, I had to get the entire title of the article because it makes me sound so cool (and edgy, haha). I tried to leave out the subtitle–it had her whole name in it–thus, is why the picture is at a weirdish angle. Anyways, I thought it looked cool. And finding my name is always a fun thing to do. It’s one of the reasons I really like the word dilemma. I wish I could’ve found that in an advertisement somewhere. But this will have to do.

Over and out.

Mayani Bird Sanctuary

Mayani Bird Sanctuary Album Cover

First of all, I really enjoyed doing this assignment. I liked the randomness of it, and I liked the room for creativity that it allowed me. So, how did I result in this vundabar album cover? Let me tell you.

After extracting the random picture/album title/band name that I was going to be using, which I did on the actual page for the assignment, I started by editing the picture because that was going to be the background for the whole thing. By the way, my random things fit very well together, I think. I imagine a a hipster, indie band of sorts. Anyways, I saved the image, and then I wanted to achieve a kind of pixely look, so once I saved it, I snapped the photo onto my iPhone directly from the computer screen. I don’t know if you’ve ever done this, but it ends up making any picture you take look pixely. It’s weird that it does it, but sometimes, in cases such as this, it can make things look pretty sweet. From there I used an app on my phone, Photoshop Express (a free app; it’s cool, but it doesn’t have all the cool features like the one you can pay for does; it makes editing photos really easy though). I changed the colors of the original photo. And then emailed the photo to myself to call it a day. From there I used paint to add the captions (the band’s name and the album title). I chose a pixely font for the band’s name to go with the theme of it, but I wanted something different for the album title–because I wanted to break up the pixel look, and because it was hard to see the black font of the pixel font on any other part of the cover. I cropped down the size of the picture so that it looked more album cover sized, and uploaded it to flickr, and is the image that you now see above. LOVE it.

An Attempt to Darken the Mood

Switch up the Mood

Although we read left-to-right, suspend reality for a second. The picture on the right is the original, and I used GIMP to darken things up a bit, using mostly the Brightness-Contrast and Hue-Saturation tools. Here is the finished product! It looks overcast, although, its hard to make flowers look foreboding :(

A good friend can be anyone regardless of his/her Religion, ethnicity, country, culture.Good Friends are gift from God; a person without a good friend is like a body without a soul. A good friend is hard to find, but it is worth it, because a good friend heals your pain and brings a smile to your face.

Process: I used GIMP to do this assignment, I used the select tool and then put my landscape at the background.

Never give up

Young beautiful woman jumping with a scarf

I belong to a land where harassment, violence and harsh cultural taboos against the women are the norms. I belong to a people who sacrifice their own daughters, sisters and wives in the name of culture, but I also belong to a generation who will open a new page in the history of my country and beautify it with peace, equality and justice for all, including its women. Therefore, it is important that one should believe on his/her self and always be ready to fight with hardship and never give up.

Process: I used GIMP program for making this assignment-the program was easy to use, I used text tool to write the quote.
