Running Around

This part of my final project is the mario and luigi running to the festival in a GIF form.  I made it using the gif animator program I have.  The clip was loaded off of Youtube and then I cut it down using iMovie because it was too long.  The assignment part of the gif media group.  Here’s the original movie from youtube.

and here’s my thing.

Wedding Palooza!

For my next assignment for my final project, I created a new assignment (yet again) which calls for creating an invitation to an event. I’m surprised that this wasn’t a design assignment already, but it doesn’t hurt to make a new one.

*I suggest reading this post after you read the final blog post*

So the event that the invitation was created for is a wedding! I am in serious wedding mode because my sister is getting married this weekend! I am so excited, but that is why I am up so late working on my final, because I need to be in South Carolina by Thursday and I want to be able to focus on it entirely. However, my sister’s wedding came in handy when making this assignment. My sister was very impressed with all of the work I had been doing for ds106 that she asked for me to make her wedding programs while I was home for spring break. It was actually an honor, my art was going to be part of her special day. After many drafts and emailing back and forth, we finally got a whole design (including a monogram and I made myself). Since I still had the monogram saved, I decided to just use that for my wedding. This made my planning stage so much easier. I had all of my fonts figured out and I had all the colors worked out as well.

Using Gimp I simply just added some more text describing the details of the wedding. However it still looked a bit bland to me, so since the wedding is taking place on the water, I decided to freestyle draw some waves on the bottom in blue with an accent color of green. I have a tablet laptop which means that I have a stylus that goes with it, so drawing things freehand is a bit easier than using a touch pad. I thought it came out nicely. What do you think?

Perfect for Those Questionable Boyfriends!

While watching The Little Mermaid to do research for my final project (life is so hard, right?) I really really wanted to do this idea. I wanted to create an advertisement for Flotsam and Jetsam Private Eyes. Why? Because I can. I just really thought the whole idea of it was crazy, they are spying on Ariel throughout the movie and reporting back to Ursula so she knows what step to take. They do a great job as well.

So I decided to make an advertisement for them. But of course, I didn’t want to make it just any advertisement. I wanted it to be a GIF because I wanted to show people that I could still make one. So I did.  Here is what I came up with:

FlotsamandJetsomAd

I wanted the GIF to be them being very sly (so I used this clip), and this was a moment when they certainly were that. However, I think the thing that stands out the most is their eyes. It just is too perfect for them to be private eyes. In order to make their eyes stand out more, I decided to make my font that color. By simply using the color selector tool in GIMP I was able to get the yellowish green that I really wanted. Similarly, I wanted the background to be similar. So I once again used the tool and air brushed away. This gave it a more smudged feeling and made it look fairly realistic in my opinion. I mean I think this ad checks out, I would totally hire them! See if Ariel does in my final project, coming your way soon.

I Much Prefer Twitter to Facebook, Except in This Case

I am almost always on Twitter, it’s actually unhealthy. However, when it comes to creating social media for famous or fictional characters, the Twitter tool is very lacking since it only allows one tweet at a time (I mean I tweet one time per 30 minutes). The facebook tool, while outdated still has some great features and can do a really good job of telling a story.

For the facebook that I made for Prince Eric I decided to focus on setting the mood for the story that I want to tell. As you can see, he takes his trip in which he has a great night and can’t stop singing (I mean he did meet Ariel after all). They then become friends on Facebook and you can see the rest from there. The thing that I really liked about this was the timeline that you can use. Having a timeline in a story is so critical to help people have an idea for what exactly is going on.

There really isn’t much more to say about this, I used the classroom tool of Fakebook in order to create the page. Some of Eric’s friends on the side are Ariel’s sisters and workers in the palace, all of whom are featured in the movie.

Stay tuned for the final project!

I Wish I was 5’5? Tall

I am six feet tall, and don’t get me wrong I love it. However, the princesses at Disney World have a height maximum, and being 6 feet tall means that I am way over the max. The day I found that out my heart shattered. I was so upset. However, that is besides the point. The reason for me divulging my heartbreak to you guys is because of the storytelling within the web assignment that I created for my final project (full story behind it to come soon). The topic of my project revolves around the idea of  how Ariel’s (from The Little Mermaid) story line would change if technology was a factor.

Well Ariel gets herself into a lot of trouble by Ursula, the villain of the movie because Ursula offers to give her legs. Well if Ariel had internet she surely could have just simply sent out a Craig’s List want ad for legs! This way, she never would have given her voice to Ursula and the story could go a whole lot differently. You will find out how exactly soon. (clicking the link will take you the website I designed)

I used the X-ray goggles tool in order to hack into the Craig’s list ad, where I could change the location, and the text of the want ad. I decided to include some lyrics from “Part of your World” to make things more related to the film. I decided to add in the 5’5″ in there as well in order to be as legitimate as possible.

Would you respond to something like this? I hope not!

I Only Do My Hair With a Dinglehopper

The secret to my beautiful hair? The dinglehopper. Seriously, it works so well!!

Don’t know what a dinglehopper is? Well here is an advertisement for it that you may see on a normal basis:

Tricked you! You thought it’d be a real advertisement. Nope, believe it or not I made this masterpiece by myself, with a headache on the side. For my final project (in which the story will be told in a blog post to come within the next 24 hours), we have to incorporate different pieces of media to tell a story and part of my story requires there to be an advertisement for a dinglehopper. If you haven’t been able to tell yet, the dinglehopper in the mermaid world is actually a fork in this world. However, they believe that it is used for hair instead of food. What silly cartoons they are!

Since this was not a video assignment, the first thing I did was create an assignment for it, which you can see here. I decided to make this one 4 stars. I know that is may seem like a lot, but you really have to find a bunch of different clips throughout a movie in order to create something. It takes a lot of planning and it also takes strong execution, which made me think that 4 stars was completely appropriate.  Now that I had the guidelines in place it was time to start working on it.

There were a lot of different clips that I used in the creation of this ad because there are 3 aspects in the movie where the dinglehopper is used or mentioned.  The first clip is interesting, because it actually is a video from this video, but the audio of this one. Yes that is right, the first video has talking in Thai. Now you may be asking yourself, Karissa why would you do something like that? Well I had the same video and audio, but for starters the video had subtitles which bothered me. But secondly when I was using Windows Movie Maker, everything was all fine and dandy. However, as soon as I went into mp4 the file would freeze for 3 seconds, the 3 seconds where the dinglehopper was mentioned. So, I ended up having to use a video, and then taking the audio and adding it into my Audacity file (which I will explain later).

Next 3 clips that I used were all from the same video, which made things nice for me in the editing world. I have scuttle announcing it, and Ariel anxiously wanting to know what it is, then followed by Scuttle’s explanation of how to use it. His explanation just makes me laugh every time because it is something that I feel like would actually be said in an infomercial. That part was just simple cutting the clips down to where I wanted them and putting them in the right order. Children’s play.

The final new clip that I used was this one of Ariel using it to brush her hair. It is a classic scene and is a great demonstration of people using the product, which is another common thing in infomercials.

But what is more common than a voice over? I’m not going to lie, I looked into Billy Mays videos to see what I could work with, but then I lost my Internet connection. While working in Windows Movie Maker, I have a bunch of imported media from other projects I have worked on including  this one about a Snuggie informercial. I decided to listen to it and see what I could get, and I added in audio aspects from this video. The upbeat music that is playing throughout the commercial is the music featured at the end of this video (just copied and pasted) and I decided to add in Ariel calling it a dinglehopper instead of the narrator calling it a snuggie! That really was just basic Audacity stuff, which then allowed me to add in the audio from the first clip when the time came to it.

So I simply imported the audio in and I had a video! However,  the ending seemed a bit anti-climatic. So I showed the details of all of the different things the dinglehopper features and what it can do for you! Typical infomercial ending antics. I made that in Power Point and saved the slide as a JPEG and was good to go!

I hope you enjoyed it, and I hope you tune in later to see what my final project has in store!

Growing up with…Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman

I didn’t really grow up with her. But audiences were able to watch her grow up in film!  Natalie Portman has been acting since the mid/early 1990′s and is still appearing regularly in films today.

For the “Growing Up With” assignment, I was required to mash up clips or pictures from films an actor or actress has been in throughout their life, showing their development as actors.  I chose Natalie Portman because she is a personal favorite and has been acting since she was very young.  Finding clips of her was surprisingly difficult as there are apparently very man people making fan videos of love songs paired with images and clips of her romantic involvements in movies.  I managed to find several though and made sure I was not using clips longer than 30 seconds (same for any audio clips I used, like part of the score for Thor).

M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I

For my last assignment for my final project I did Greetings from ds106 (again). I previously did this assignment here, but for the stake of my final story I went ahead and did it twice (it will make more sense when you see my whole story together.

For this assignment I made my postcard for a small town in Mississippi.  It wasn’t a specific town just one that is quite small.  I knew I wanted to make the postcard quite simple.  I feel like the a small town would obviously have a less elaborate and decorated postcard that somewhere like Chicago would.

I started off by googling small town Mississippi.  I ended up finding a lot of pictures of small town roads and I even came across a sign that said Small Town Mississippi.  I guess that town is quite proud of their small size.  I ended up going with these to pictures to start:

Street

small town mississippi

As I played around in gimp I realized that I wanted it to say welcome to in some way as well.  I started off trying to find a font that would work but I wasn’t finding anything that I liked.  I ended up deciding to go with the welcome to part off of this sign:

welcome-to-mississippi

Here is my final result.  I feel like I captures the feeling of a small town pretty well.  What do you think?

Taylor on Tour

For my sixth assignment for my final I choose GIF Animate Your Day Like Ben.  This assignment is to capture key moments each as an animated GIF – as you go through a day look around and identify places, moments, things that are well represented in the infinite looping form.

For my assignment I choose to follow Taylor Swift around on a normal day.  Luckily Taylor’s “normal days” aren’t really that normal.  I decided to take videos from Taylor’s red tour and make them into gifs.  I looked up videos of her tour on youtube to find my videos.  Going though and trying to find ones that were good quality was quite difficult.  I had to search for a while until I found ones I was happy with.  I ended up finding videos from her songs Sparks Fly, her opening speech, Treacherous, State of Grace, and I Knew You Were Trouble.

To make my gifs I used this tutorial form the ds106 handbook.  While I had made gifs before, it had been a long time so I had to refresh myself.  I mainly used mpeg stream clip and and gimp for this assignment.

Here are my gifs I came up with. I sure wish this was an average day for me.

Princess Natalie Can Do It!

For the assignment to “Recycle the Media,” I made a story about a princess who, upon encountering a Rosie the Riveter poster, realizes she can decide her own fate and goes off on a journey of her own instead of waiting for prince charming.

I took a cartoon picture of a girl and put her in a field to provide the setting of her kingdom, which has weird birds living in it because the audio clip of birds were not the chirping type.  I photoshopped the photo of Rosie the Riveter onto the mural that was for Fizzlebottom’s in Downtown Fredericksburg.  I referenced Rapunzel because she did get her prince charming and there was a still from the movie Tangled, and then photoshopped Natalie onto the back of the pug horse that someone dumped in the recycling bin.
