Enough Will Never Be Enough

harper ad copy

Nine and a half years ago I was adopted by an adorable, loving yet sometimes aloof puppy, Harper, Mr. Friendly, Harper-Harper-Bo-Barper, my Handsome Boy.  Yesterday he died.  With him, a piece of my heart and soul feel like they died too.

When I walked into the home of the family that had been fostering Harper, I met a few really nice dogs, but one was so sweet, calm, and confident, even at 12 weeks old, that I knew he was the dog I had been looking for.

Let me tell you something only a few people know.  I got a dog (actually 2, but that’s a story for another day) to use as a tool.  Yes, a tool.

I was depressed, pretty severely, in counseling, but refusing medication.  If I wasn’t working I would stay in bed all day and all night, or just mope around the house; I was a terror for my roommate, making her life a living hell.  I didn’t care about anything, my friends, my house, myself.  I just wanted it all to end.  I wanted to NOT FEEL LIKE CRAP every day.  I could see no way out.

I decided that instead of self-medicating, I should figure out a way to change things.  After thinking about it, I thought to myself, “What is going to make me get out of bed?”  The one and only thing that came to my mind was a dog. A dog?  Well this is going to sound strange, but I knew I wouldn’t want a dog peeing on me, my bed or the floors and to combat that, I. WOULD. HAVE. TO. GET. OUT. OF. BED.  I got a dog so that I could mentally/emotionally/physically get out of bed.  Actually, I brought home two.

The boys (what everyone who knows them, calls them), Harper and his brother, made it okay for me to walk around the neighborhood again, smile at strangers again, make new friends, hold my head high, and laugh again.

I have been lucky to be surrounded by a loving family and have married a wonderfully supportive husband, but sometimes, just sometimes, I can tick them off; that’s expected, we’re all human.  What Harper gave me was permission to be me again, nothing I ever did or said could make him upset with me, angry at me, or even cold towards me.  While we had dogs growing up, and they were fun, I never experienced that special unconditional love for a dog and from a dog, until Harper.

So, yesterday morning, after a tough surgery the day before, a good nights rest, and fighting the good fight, his body said enough is enough.

Enough will never be enough for me, but I realize that if this life we live is a delicate balance between black and white, yin and yang, birth and death, summer and winter, wanting and needing; the proof of the immense pleasure he and I shared can be found in the heartache I am feeling because of his passing.

Suddenly I See (Animated Music Video Assignment)

Almost halfway done with my final project!

The next assignment I did was the “Animated Music Video” assignment. I originally wanted to do a few weeks back, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to sit there and edit a ton of clips with no clear vision or direction. So, when I was looking for things to do for my final project, I came across this assignment again, and sat down and mapped out what I wanted this video to look like (which makes things 100x easier!) Here’s what I came up with:

First, I used one giant clip from YouTube, since it had so many different short scenes would fit with the tone and idea of my video. Coincidentally, it’s also my favourite part of the movie!

I then edited the clips on iMovie, and added in music to fit the tone. I ended up choosing this song, which I also grabbed from YouTube with PwnYouTube:

As always, let me know what you think! Yay for almost being done (:

Some People Change

For my last assignment of this final story was the Where Are They Now? {**} video assignment. I wanted to show everyone where the characters of this final story ended up. What changed, who changed, who stayed the same?? You’ll learn it all now :) I just hate when people don’t update the viewers on where the characters are now. That is the worst thing in movies. {Although now I know that stories can be open-ended and that’s ok.}

I got pictures of the main characters: Sabrina, Libby, and Valeria {Sabrina’s best friend} from back when the show aired {1997ish} and now. I thought it was important to show the viewers just how much everyone has changed. I put these pictures together in my Windows Movie Maker. Side note: throughout this class, I have fallen in love with Windows movie maker. I never knew what it could do, I just had it on my computer. Now, I use it all the time. I’m preparing a movie/slide show for my graduation party with it!!!! I just love it. Ok, back to the story :)

I added captions to each character’s then and now pictures. This part needed to be funny. After all, this is how I’m ending my story. I don’t want the traditional “and they lived happily ever after” ending. Actually I think we’re banned from doing that or we’ll get a bad grade. Regardless, I wanted to make it funny.

Once I was done editing the video {changing transitions, font, color, and adding music}, I uploaded it to Vimeo and viola:

Stay tuned for my my final story – putting all the pieces together!!!

Animated Dance

This video for my final project means to show a group of dancers and their art, for which they have been arrested. It is just a dance, but the authorities of

I created a mashup assignment for this video, where I propose to rotoscope a dance or sport sequence. Unlike the assignment description I draw the outlines with a pencil on paper and scanned the drawings. I used my video editor by adding the scans and combining them with the sound of the original video

My masterpieces

In addition to two tutorials, we had to create two brand new assignments to share with DS106.

The first assignment I created is called “Dear sixteen year old, me“! I feel very official having a DS106 assignment out there with my name on it! Basically all you do is write a letter to your 16 year old self and record it. I labeled this as a Video assignment, but I can see it working as an audio assignment as well, especially if you were to create a video with pictures of your high school days and have the recording in the background.

My inspiration came from this video, I know its about skin cancer, but I liked the general premise behind the video and thought it would be fun to write a letter to my own 16 year old self. All I did was record the video in iMovie, edit a little and add a title and credit screen. I gave this 2 stars because it is a relatively easy assignment, but due to the potential video editing and how fancy you get with filming it, I thought 2 stars was appropriate.

Here is my video:

The second assignment I created was another video assignment, entitled “It’s Vacation Time“! I LOVE going on vacation and traveling new places. So I thought it would be fun to have a video assignment to share pictures and memories from our vacations. I gave the assignment 2 stars. I created my example in iMovie, it’s about my trip on a Mediterranean  cruise. I even made a tutorial on how to do it.

It’s Vacation time! {Tutorial}

Here is a quick tutorial on how to make my own assignment “It’s Vacation time“.

First you need to decide what vacation you want to make a video out of and gather all the pictures. I find it easiest to create a new folder on my desktop and save them there, this way they are all together.

Now you are ready to put them into iMovie. Of course, iMovie is on a Mac so I don’t know if this is true for Movie Maker. But all you have to do is click, drag and drop each picture into iMovie.

Next add in your Title and Closing Credit slides (seen here in the orange). To do this, you will select the “T” on the right middle of iMovie and different designs come up. Select what you like.

Now edit the video as you so choose, adding some titles on to the pictures and anything else you want.

Then add some music. I went with “Good Life” by OneRepublic. I already had the song, so I went to iTunes and drug it into iMovie.

The Green line is the music. Make sure to make it fade out at the end, so the music doesn’t stop abruptly. TO do this, click on the gear symbol and edit audio, you can decide how many seconds out you want to fade it.

And from here you are done. Make sure to finalize and upload it to youtube.

Assignment Wizard

Apart of this week’s work was to also finish out our contributions to the class and really make our marks! An essential way that we had to do this was through creating assignments for future classes, which was way more exciting than I thought it would be! Actually, my first assignment was made awhile ago because I had been anticipating this so it’s awesome that I finally go to submit it.

ASSIGNMENT #1(VIDEO): The first assignment I submitted was a Survival video! This idea came to me when my mom told me that she would never be able to survive as a freshmen in college because it is so different than when she was younger. So, I took this opportunity to make her video of some important things that would potentially help her survive her freshmen year if she had to go through it again. I made this four star’s just because it takes a lot more creativity than most would think. I just happen to have an ah-ha! moment that really helped me but I hope when people see my video, they also have those ah-ha moments that make the assignment easier. However, for those who don’t, that’s why I wanted it to be four star’s.

The day we went on a roller coaster!

ASSIGNMENT #2(VISUAL): The second assignment I created as Adventure In A Day! Which only came to me after my friends and I were fooling around on my photobooth, pretending we were underwater, or going to Paris for the day. So I figured, almost every computer, or smartphone, has some sort of way to put themselves in a background to make it seem like they went on an ‘adventure’ for the day. Apart of the assignment is to also create a story around it, which is two star’s. However, if you make the effort to take multiple pictures and create a bigger storyline, than I would add a star for that extra effort and creativity!

“I Want To Suck Your Blood” Archetype!

I have an obsession with vampires.. always loved them so why not create a badass female montage clip. In the first clip I used “Bella” from “Twilight” even though shes a fake vampire it went with the theme. Then I used “Queen Akasha” from “Queen of The Damned”, I aboslutely love her character in the movie. She is one of my favorite Vampires of all time. In the 3rd clip I used from Van Helsing which was an awesome graphics movie. The “Van Helsing” vampires were “Anna, Markishka, Verona and Aleera.” The 4th clip I used “Jessica” the babygirl vamp from “True Blood”, awesome series by the way on HBO. In the final clip is Selena! I saved her for last because I know everyone knows about “The Underworld” and she is well known. This was a sick ass scene by the way, sucking blood while the bullet falls out of her head. Cool.
