A Stronger Person

Three of my all time favorite movies are Matilda, Spirited Away, and La Femme Nikita. I always question and wonder why certain things are my favorite.  I realize all these movies have a couple things in common a strong leading woman, a bit of magic, and they all are a bit unordinary.  Perhaps thats what draws me in.  If you guys have not seen any of these movies I strongly recommend them for all ages.

I chose this assignment because immediately when I read the descriptions these three movies came to mind and I remembered just how influential they truly were to me.  It was great to watch the clips and go back down on memory lane.  It took me a couple hours to do this assignment because every time I watched a clipped I ended up going back and watching the whole thing.  Funny thing is no matter how much I age I am still intrigued by all.

The way I created this assignment was by going on youtube selecting my favorite clips and downloading them to my computer.  Edited the videos and arranged them into imovie.  All was left to do is add my commentary and upload.

Be Kind, Rewind

For this project I recreated a scene from Wizard of Oz with my own twist.  Honestly I think I like mine more than the original. XD  Plus, I think my dog did a better job acting out the role of Todo.    Or maybe I was a fan of my version because I could relate so much.  Either way fun project.

The reason I picked this assignment is because I thought it would be creative and different.  I chose Wizard of Oz because I felt like it had a lot of play room with the dialogue.  I also wanted to pick a movie that I know most people have seen.   On top of that it  was a lot of fun trying to act out my interpretation of Judy Garland.

The way I created this piece is by trying to dress up as Dorothy using what I had around the house. That said I found the most convenient Todo which was my very own personal Luna.  I tried to use some elements that we learned in the beginning of this week like one point perspective and zooming.  I edited my clips using imovie.  Put on a filter to help make the clips look dated and increased the speed of my voice to give it a more comical feel.

Vintage Educational Video

Video was the new frontier for teaching in the 1950s and you can find rich (and funny) examples of educational videos of that era. In this assignment make a 5 minute or less video of a modern topic in the vintage style of these films. Include elements like cheesy music, titles, cut out graphics, booming voice to make something educational.

I really lucked out that my friend Andrew has a sweet camera and was willing to help me with this assignment. I had been planning on resting my computer on the stove and just try to tape myself on that but this worked WAY better.

We were able to film in Black and White so that made the editing process much easier!!

I tried to mimic old cooking shows by showing the ingredients in their containers and then measured out. This almost made me feel like I was hosting one of the cooking segments on Zoom!

I then uploaded the clips into iMovie and began to edit them. I used “Fade to black” as the transition for all of the clips and added all of the text through iMovie.

As mentioned in my previous post I used the audio from the Julia Child Intro. I really wanted to use it but it is such a short clip that I feel like it becomes a little annoying. Maybe that just because I have watched it so many times during editing!!

I Love You, Man in 5 Seconds

For my 5 second film assignment I choose to preview one of my favorite movies “I Love You, Man”.  I cut the important clips from the trailer into my mini movie.  If you have seen it, you should get the main idea.  ”I Love You, Man” is a comedy about Peter Klaven, featuring Paul Rudd, who is trying to find a best man for his wedding.

This is a screenshot of the process.

How to restring a guitar

I was playing my guitar while I was trying to think of an idea of what to do for my “30 Second Documentary” assignment when I broke a string.  I figured that since I have to change it anyway, why not make a documentary about it?  I recorded myself with a tripod, and then edited the video in iMovie.  I added music and title slides to further document my steps.

A cooking show for all

So I decided to show you guys how to cook my favorite breakfast meal, Toad in the Hole.  It is a egg and toast based meal. Here is the video below!

So what do you guys think? The video is a little longer than all my others, but the meal takes some time to cook. To do this I I filmed myself cooking and then edited the video afterwards. Some of you may have noticed that in the middle of the video I said I might edit the middle of the video out. I decided not to because  I messed up cooking the egg. I wanted to show you guys my error and what you are not suppose to do. If everything went right, then some of the cooking would have been edited out. To make this video I used 2 programs. Imovie to edit the video and audio and Microsoft Paint to make the credits and intro scenes. I insrted audio over the intro and credits and watched the video if it needed any more cleaning up. I feel this video tuned out great.

So what do you guys think about my cook? Should I become a profossinal chef?

First Video Assignment

I really enjoyed learning the ropes in iMovie and had fun adding music I like to an awesome movie trailer.  I picked the Lorax because it is a great kids movie with a legitimate message.  The song I used is an old Ratatat beat called Loud Pipes found on Youtube.  These are the original trailers for the Lorax I took pieces from, if you would like to watch them.

When editing these videos I just picked out the pieces I wanted to use in iMovie and placed them together in accordance with the Ratatat song.  Here is a screenshot of the process.

The Andrew Thomas Experience 2013-06-13 19:14:37

So I decided to make a short video that shows random words. In the spirit of using truly random words that I didn’t pick, I used a random word generator. Find the generator here. The point of this video is to show the viewer some random words. The words that were picked for me where almost all words that I needed to look up, so I think they are fairly  random old words.

Watch the video I made below

Here are the definitions of all the words below. They are in order that they appear.

Easterly:  Situated toward the east.

Peony: A species o flowers.

Vole: A small species of rodents.

Poplin: A  fabric of many varieties, usually made of silk and worsted. Used especially for women’s dresses.

Cachet: A seal for a letter.

Downtrodden: trample down; abused by  superior power.

The audio is the from Wake Up Call by Maroon 5.

To make this video, I first got the random words. Then I picked a color and font for the word in Microsoft word. Next I copy and pasted the word into Microsoft Paint  in order to duplicate the word and add a background color. I then imported the MS Paint picture in Imovie and made each picture last 1.5 seconds.  Did those steps again 5 more times for the other words. Last but not least, I added audio.

So I liked the way this turned out. The audio in the song lined up pretty good with the end of the video. The line in the song ended right when the video ended. I was surprised with the amount of work in this assignment. I figured it would be a fast 1 or 2 stars. I was wrong. The assignment was rated 3 stars. I felt that is the right amount for the amount of time this took me to make. Good to see the star system is working correctly. So what do you guys think of my work? I think that I am improving and go the hang of basic video editing and making.

This assignment was worth 3 stars and  can be seen here.

The word sped, what does it mean?

So the word sped. So of you might think its a past tense for the word speed and you are right, but to me it has a different meaning. Check out this video of me explaining what sped really means.

So what do you guys think? To make this is used Imovie software for a mac, but there was more set up then that. Imovie was useful in string clips together and editing down all of my clips. The background I had was a white canvas paper proper against a box. I had some trouble trying to set up the stage. What you saw was my successful attempt. All other set ups had the camera at an angle or were very shaky. This made me realize that a set up stage is very important for a movie. Its just not all about the actors. I also had to change cloths to represent another person. Should I get more people involved in my movies or just do it the way I am already doing it. I got the idea to use note cards to explain the word from here. I liked the idea and I feel that it gets the meaning of the word across.

So what do you guys think of the word sped? For me it is a blast from the past.

This assignment was worth 4 stars and can be found here.

What is YOUR opinion?

For this assignment (http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/whats-your-opinion-on/) I had to think of a question to ask a bunch of people, and find out their opinion. The question I decided to ask was “What is your opinion on the saying: “everyone needs to go to college”?”

I loved doing this assignment. The thing that was the most interesting was finding out different generations’ answers. I got teenagers’ responses, Parents’ responses and even grandparents’ responses.

I filmed everyones responses then edited and added in credits in pinnacle movie making Editor. This was worth 3 Stars
